2016 Oakland Raiders thread (1 Viewer)

He also single-handedly lost the Bears games because he couldn't haul in that swing pass at the end of the game. He also got knocked out and fumbled in another game. Hes too tall to be an every down back, he can't protect himself from big shots. Like I've said before. He's adequate. Hes a homerun threat but he has his liabilities.

Nobody single handedly wins or loses any game (not even Blair Walsh last year).  He was too tall and couldn't protect himself last season on the way to 16 starts and over 300 touches.

I don't think many people look at this guy objectively while giving the rest of the team a free pass.

You are correct.  The whole Raider O took a nose dive midseason and Murray was not getting running room.   Murray is a talented RB.  That cannot be denied.  He should be starting in the NFL.  He has great speed and decent vision.  But, he does not have power or run with an attitude.  I do not see any fire.

Thanks. I am not calling him Adrian Peterson or anything but I think some people are just being very reactionary when looking at him specifically.

I am probably some of those people.  Maybe I expected too much out of him.  Not sure why it bothers me that Murray goes to the ground so easy.

The RB situation will be sorted out in Oakland this season.  There is some talent on the bench this season.

Offensive line with the best pass blocking efficiency this preseason? Oakland at 89.3. Line has yet to allow a sack or hit; just 8 hurries

Jalen Richard back practicing; might fans get first preseason look at intriguing rookie this week? #Raiders

Everyone is talking about Washington and Atkinson, but the guy who is showing the most on tape is Olawale. He's bigger (not taller) than Murray and runs angry. I wonder why the coaches don't  give him more carries. When he gets the ball he drags tacklers like tin cans behind a newlyweds' car. You can see a difference in power, Murray can be arm-tackled, Olawale cannot! I know I'm just and armchair QB fan, but I want to see this guy get 20 carries running between Hudson and Osemele and see what happens.
I agree, and it seems the NFL has forsaken the power / plodder backs.  I'd rather have a guy who churns out the 4-5 yard runs consistently over the straight line speed home run threat any day.

So if we get hyped that the pass blocking was good, shouldn't we be worried the run blocking was non-existent?

I like Olawale and would love to see him get more opportunities.  It's funny but in some ways he's like the guy he is likely replacing on the roster.  Whenever he got the opportunity Marcel Reece always looked like the best back on the field too but never got any sustained touches.  Not sure why that was.  Hope that changes with Olawale.

I had wanted to see Reece as the feature back since McFadden was the #1.

I'm going to choose to not be worried about that. I cannot fathom that this line won't run block.

In fact, I'm not going to worry about much beyond Mario getting healthy, and Dan getting in shape.  The Giants have looked atrocious on offense all preseason, I'm not down on their passing game.

This team ran the ball well with a lesser line last year, for half the year.  They have a better RG, a RT that beat out last year's RT, and a #######g silverback at LG.  If they cannot run on the Saints in week 1, I will wonder.

The fact that the team is the best pass-blocking O-line in the preseason is nice to hear, but I don't think it means they are better than Dallas.

The #1 priority during camp is health, to me.  So far, so good.  One more game, and then it's all scrubs in week 4.  Beyond health, I pay attention to TC reports, and don't overreact to the games.  Otherwise, I would be picking up Atkinson in all my fantasy leagues.

What I have gleaned from the summer, and what I think we should believe:

The secondary is in an exciting place, the #1 priority to most Raider fans (I know it was mine).  Smith has been great, Amerson has been matching him (which is HUGE), everyone likes the look of Joseph, and Nelson is healthy.

So far, it seems like the Raiders are really happy with Jihad Ward.  We should probably be talking about this more.  If the Raiders hit on a another defensive lineman, we might be in for some specialness the next few years.  Jihad! Jihad! Jihad!

It is Latavius' job to lose. Not saying he won't lose it, but they are gonna give him the rock till he proves he shouldn't be getting it.

Heeney is the man in the middle, has passed Malcolm as their #1 LB.

Hayden beat out Carrie for 3rd CB.

Nate Allen has looked good as a backup.

Cory James--the last LB taken in the draft--is going to make this team.

SeaBass ain't going anywhere.

Special Teams looks a LOT better.

Osemele looks as good as advertised.

What we saw in a quarter or two in preseaosn games, when coaches are often trying a lot of different things and auditioning players, often to the detriment of cohesiveness, just makes me shrug.  Whatever.  It's the time for sloppy play.  Best defensive team I ever saw, the 85 Bears, went winless in the preseason.

Agreed, but I think it's a very short leash.  This coaching staff showed last year they would bench him if he puts the ball on the ground.

Reggie Nelson potentially out this week.

Sounds good to me. Let's see more of Joseph, McGill, and Allen back there.  Think we know what Reggie can do.

i am now going to opening day as well!! :pickle: fly in sunday morning.  who's going?   lets meet up in the parking lot!  my buddies will have a sweet tailgate going if you want to join us.

and i'm looking for a single ticket :D

Luvin the rookie RBs. JRich looks more fluid than DWash in his motion. He definitely plays quicker/faster than he timed. Liking both of them better than stiff Lat.

Where has our supposedly improved edge rush been this preseason? Hoping the underwhelming D has been a product of vanilla schemes. Irvin, Calhoun, Cowser have been non-existent so far.

atlas he didn't let the RB get outside this time.

That said when the ball was in there air around him he was solid. Unlike Smith and Allen. Dunno what they were thinking on those 2 plays

Anyone else watch the same game I did last night? This was the Tennessee Titans at home. The starting defense was horrible! They got pushed around all 1st half. Just like they have all preseason. They allowed 276 the first half and their 1st 4 possessions all ended up in the red zone. They didn't even bring their punter out until the end of the 3rd quarter. It's a bad omen to me when you get blown out at home in the 3rd preseason game. This defense is not ready for the Saints week one, at all! Fortunately, the offense seems to be coming around. I like what I saw out of Richard, seemed to have a knack for finding the running lanes. Other than that, this poor defensive performance, and penalties  have me concerned.

^^^I see what you see. Lots of hype but mostly just sketchy production from the D and OL. Carr still struggles when pressured.

BUT, it is preseason. Not inspired, but not panicking. Yet.

Tennessee came to Oakland and put a whoopin on them. You can say it's just preseason all you want. Fact of the matter is, they were out-played by the Titans. And they were just more fired up. The troubling part for me, is they were out-played in the trenches. That's where most of Reggie's money and draft picks are going. The blossoming Carr to Cooper connection is great and all, but it takes more than a QB-WR combo to win a championship, just ask Stafford and Megatron.

From what I saw, the TEN OL abused the Raiders DL.

Not a great showing.

Their record is 0-0 after this game - I still see the Raiders as a 9 win team.

It's becoming more and more clear that Latavius needs to be replaced as the starter and move to a Blount/Ware type role.
No, it really isn't.

I love the idea of Washington spelling Lat, he needs the help back there but that is all Wash is right now, help.

The 0-16 Lions went 4-0 in the preseason.

Teams hold out plays, and players, from the games for a wide variety of reasons whether that be to limit available tape on players or schemes, or to avoid injury, or to give someone else a shot who otherwise wouldn't see the field.  It is far more about player assessment and providing an opportunity for players and coaches to get back to a game ready state.  It's a glorified scheduled TV practice.  If you aren't worried about how teams fair in 7 on 7 games, or in inter-squad practices, then preseason games shouldn't bother you either.

We all need to remember this.

While it is concerning to watch your team get pushed around in preseason, it is still preseason.  The Raider O is going to be fine.  The D is still a work in progress.  Going to fun to watch this thing unfold.  This is a young, rebuilt team.

82 Redskins 0-4 Superbowl Champs.  Bills 0-4 lost in Suoerbowl one year too.  Preseason means nothing.  The coaches are not trying to win the games.  They are not gameplanning like the regular season.  They are playing more vanilla versions of offense and def.

While this is true right now, I don't have the confidence that it won't devolve into more of a full blown RBBC sooner rather than later.

I'll be the first to defend Murray's 2015 campaign as more than just smoke and mirrors. Yes, his large number of attempts (266) were a prominent factor in why he amassed 1,066 yards, and it's true that his YPC average was middling at 4.0. Murray also trailed off hard in the last 8 games in terms of productivity and success on the ground.

But it was the first NFL season Murray had to take on the role of bellcow, and he had nil in the way of support, either in the backfield (I think Carr was the next leading rusher on the team) or up front on the line (our Oline was adequate and ranked about in the middle of the pack). Murray earned those yards and the top 10 finish, and was underrated and unheralded all season.

With more options like Washington behind him, Latavius will benefit in terms of not having to carry the load all himself. This will naturally decrease his carries/attempts, and potentially his stats, but in many cases, more spelling often means more effectiveness and durability through the season. The stellar upgrades to O-line will also help Murray immensely, especially if he finds success behind a roadgrading Osemele on the left side -- by far and away Murray's success last year on the ground came through runs up the middle.

So why am I worried? It comes down to a simple test of the eye and a feeling in the gut. I've watched every run this offseason, and Murray doesn't seem to have the same explosiveness or even vision Washington has had. This is way more apparent in the receiving game, but to me it looks as if Murray goes down too easily, doesn't generate push, and isn't using his 4.3 speed when first being handed the ball.

Washington, on the other hand, has looked much more dynamic and more flexibly adaptable in more than just 3rd down situations. He is speedy, elusive, and is able to both pound the ball up the middle, bounce to the outside, and make defenders look like JV scrubs when he's in space.

I drafted Murray this year about where I had him ranked (14th RB overall in a PPR), knowing that there is some downside that comes from less work. So I hope I'm dead wrong. But what I've seen from Washington so far makes me think he will not simply just spell Murray but outright split carries before halfway through the season, given that Washington seems to excel where Murray isn't as strong. I'm all for finally having some talent in the backfield for the team, but I am just not sold that this is Murray's job to lose -- I think he may have already lost some situational work and that Washington will be relied on more than people expect this year.

maybe ...just MAYBE ....these guys are reading and hearing the hype and are buying into it....when that happens a lot of times guys stop trying as hard...it happens all the time ...they need a reality slap that makes them dig in and fight...maybe the titans game get them motivated

I haven't seen anything from Irvin that has impressed me. If he is just on cruise control in the preseason, fine.  But I'd like to see more, because Mack is being double teamed a lot.

I liked both backup RB, and can't tell them apart really.

Carr throws passes I haven't seen a Raider QB ever throw. He's not perfect, he takes chances here and there, but Lordy, we have a good one.

Menelik had two different plays on the opening drive where I thought he was beaten in pass pro. After that, he played really well.

Penn looks fine to me.

Jihad has been a starter since camp opened, and seems like he's on his way. I cannot wait to see Mario next to him in a few weeks.

Malcolm better look out, Cory James got a LOT of run with the first team D last game. The coaches must really think they have something with him.

Amerson is playing with such confidence, he's really looking better than last year.

Nate Allen is making sure that there is someone on this team to dislike.

Second team O line looked good, Alexander Mongo Kirkland Howard were smacking people around.

No idea how the scrub ANd looked, because TEN was running the wishbone.

You make some valid points and I am not suggesting that 6, 8, 10, 16 weeks from now Lat will definitely be the starter but there is no question that he is the starter today.  And the fact that he has some help in the backfield is not a huge point of concern, in fact it should be a benefit.  Every RB has help in the backfield and Lat's 76% touch rate for RBs almost never happens, and really isn't sustainable, so it shouldn't concern people that the number is going to drop.

Last year the Raiders were 24th in offensive plays run (1,008) and ran the 5th most defensive plays (1,085).  They also were 17th in total points scored (358 points, 42 TDs) with the 4th fewest rushing TDs (7).  There is a lot of meat left on that bone and it was the entire team that collapsed in the second half of the season, not just Lat.  If we believe any of the hype from this off-season we can hope that those numbers will skew the opposite way this year which means that while we shouldn't expect Lat to have 76% of the teams RB touches his total touches may not drop significantly, if at all, because there will be more plays run and more points to be scored (likely more from the rushing game specifically).  And if he shows anything close to what he did during the first 8 games last season then there is reason to believe that he may surpass his end of year numbers.  At the very least there is not much reason to think there will be a decline.

I realize I can be a little negative, emotional  or harsh when it comes to the Raiders. But damn people! My 22 year old was 8 the last time they had a winning season! Sadly we are now in Detroit and Cleveland territory and I don't like it. I'm pro Reggie I think he has done a great job rebuilding the team and I believe he has been a Godsend to this organization.

The job now falls on Del Rio, the coaching staff and players to make this thing work. I have to step back and realize this is NOT a playoff team yet.

The defense has so many new faces, it's naturally going to take some time for them to gel. They have 4 new DBs playing together in the backfield. If there was a category for "almost intercepted" I think Sean Smith would be leading the league. Amerson looks legit when it comes to his pass defense, but he's been wiffing on some open field tackles. I'm sure he would be more willing to stick his hat in there in the regular season, I get it. There's new faces in the LB corps, DL and Edwards needs to get healthy. It's great to see Ward and Joseph  in there starting from day one, but they're  rookies. There's going to be growing pains, I just have to accept that.

Anyone who thinks the Raiders are going to come into New Orleans and shut Drew Brees down is in for a serious wake up call. I hope I'm wrong, but I don't see this defense being ready week 1 to take on a QB like Brees, especially on the road.

That being said... It's looking like the offense will be able to score points. The NFL is now a QB driven league and thank you Reggie, we have our QB. I expect big things from him this season. Carr is in the group of future QB stars with names like Luck, Winston, Mariota and Bortles and maybe a couple others I'm missing, point is, it's good to have that feeling about our QB. When is the last time a Raider fan can say that?

Bottom line JDR and Norton Jr need to get this team off to a fast start (which they have been notoriously bad at.) Remember the home opener against Cincy last year? And they have to get off the field on 3rd down. Last year they led the league in giving up points on the opponents opening drive. And I'm concerned. The preseason hasn't shown much progress in these areas when every 1st teams offense has driven right down the field on the 1st team defense.

I have never been a huge JDR fan, but I think Raider fans need to be hopeful he can pull this team together.

Totally agree with the sentiment that the big burden right now is on Del Rio and his staff. Part of the success of the old teams wasn't just a Hell's Angel's attitude looking to make their mark physically on teams. It was Poise and Pride, the Commitment to Excellence -- this needs to return in the form of fundamentals that the Raiders often have been lacking, like:

  • Mental mistakes causing flags
  • Poor initial tackling and not getting your guy to the ground on first contact
  • Not letting game momentum/emotion get in the way of simple execution
  • Game clock and down/distance management
Talent is there -- the coaching staff need to harness it correctly and instill it on every play. Hard to keep my own expectations in check, but it will take time. Team has talent enough to go 11-5, but simply a winning record this year would be a huge step in the right direction.

Damnit!

Mario Edwards - DL - Raiders

Raiders DE Mario Edwards (hip) is a candidate for the reserve/PUP list.
Edwards has been sidelined since Oakland's preseason opener. He was given a 4-6 week timetable, but hasn't progressed as expected. Stashing Edwards on PUP would allow the Raiders to free a roster spot for the first six games. Jihad Ward and Denico Autry project to replace Edwards opposite Khalil Mack.

http://www.ibabuzz.com/oaklandraiders/2016/08/31/five-raiders-watch-thursday-seattle-seahawks/

5 Raiders to watch tonight:

Wide receiver Johnny Holton: The fifth receiver spot — assuming the Raiders keep five — has been one of the few openings the team’s had to figure out and it’ll come down to the wire.

Holton has been the most impressive throughout camp, especially since he brings ability in the return game. He’s caught five passes for 78 yards in the preseason.

Holton should play plenty on Thursday and a big game could lock in his spot.

“I pretty much want to do the same thing I’ve been doing, just going out there playing football, having fun with my teammates,” Holton said of his approach toward Thursday night. “Overall, I just want to get better than I was last week. I want to improve every day and get better.”

Wide receiver K.J. Brent: Holton’s top competition is Brent, who has the benefit of size at 6-foot-4 to Holton’s 6-foot frame.

Brent had his first three catches of the preseason last week when he caught three balls for 54 yards. He also had a nice 28-yard catch in the first exhibition game that was waved off by a very questionable pass interference call.

Whichever of these players doesn’t make the 53-man roster will likely be brought back on to the practice squad as long as another team doesn’t sign them, so both could be part of the Raiders future.

Quarterback Connor Cook: It’s going to be Cook’s first extended run in an NFL game (and probably his last for a while). The No. 3 quarterback expects to play the majority of the preseason finale and it will be important repetitions for him and the Raiders.

Backup quarterback Matt McGloin is a free agent after this season (and currently the highest paid quarterback on the roster, ahead of even Carr). The Raiders will need to figure out if Cook is their backup of the future and they hope this will be their last real look at him until next season.

“All the stuff that I’ve learned thus far, go use it,” Cook said. “This is time to cut loose and have fun with the guys.”

Defensive end/linebacker James Cowser: The undrafted pass rusher from Southern Utah didn’t see a defensive snap in last week’s loss to the Tennessee Titans.

Is that a sign the Raiders are trying to hide him so they may be able to sneak him on to the practice squad? Don’t rule that out, although there seems to be room on the roster for a fourth pass rusher behind Mack, Bruce Irvin and fellow rookie Shilique Calhoun. Cowser should get a chance to play a lot Thursday and it’d be nice to see him excel against some NFL backups.

Safety Dewey McDonald: The third-year player seemed to be on the rise early in training camp and then it came crashing down in the first preseason game. Keith McGill unofficially moved ahead of him on the safety depth chart and has stayed there.

McDonald’s now sitting squarely on the bubble, especially because another safety in Brynden Trawick has been making plays left and right in special teams. This is McDonald’s last chance to prove himself.
