2016 Oakland Raiders thread (2 Viewers)

I don't have a problem with the decision to go on fourth near midfield, but I didn't like the play that was called.  If they wanted to run Latavius was running hard all day and he should have gotten the ball.  The defense is a complete disaster so far.  Atlanta did whatever they wanted yesterday whether it was running or passing and they are getting absolutely no pass rush at all.

Funny the selective memory going in here. Bad game overall even for a team that had two X country trips this week, but JDRs gutsy calls are clearly about developing a confident, brazen team that believes they will overcome any situation and has the complete faith and confidence of the staff. So while I found the game disappointing on many levels I am not bothered in any way about the 4th down call at midfield.
I am on board with JDR's approach and confidence building. I just thought it was a poor play call for that situation. The failure to make the first down ultimately put the game out of reach. It can be reasonably argued that even if the Raiders had punted there is no certainty that the defense was going to stop the Falcons.

What is really disappointing is to see the defense give up big play after big play on their home field, to a team that had to travel across the country. We have made any strides forward despite all the off season moves. This all stems from a lack of pass rush. It is time to dial up the blitz and put the damn QB on the ground.

This is spot on.  The O has taken a step forward while the D remains awful or worse.  How can there be no pass rush?  Norton is gone soon.
I'm not firing Norton after two games.  Yes, the pass rush is a concern but overall this team doesn't have the talent for such expectations.  I didn't expect the secondary to be strong but they have surpassed even my concerns.  The Raiders haven't covered a TE since about 2005.  Love the gut and grit of Heeney and Smith, but the reality is they are below average physical talents that are on the list to replace, you just can't do it all in two years.  As expected this defensive roster is a work in progress.  Thankfully the Smith contract is easy to escape because that may actually be necessary.

If the D does not improve to average in 2 to 4 more games,Norton has to go.  The Raiders are not loaded at D but they are not playing up to their talent level.  Do you think that they are playing up to their talent level?  If not, what is the problem and what is the answer?  And if so, we are in for a long season.

What were your expectations because they've been torched for 396 yesterday and 423 last week?

This...  Week in,  week out TEs go off against the Raiders, they have for years. Snead had a career game last week and Tamme and Hooper probably just had their statistically best games a season. And Hooper is a rookie. I'm sure you all know this has carried over from last season and the frustrating part as a fan I see it happening over and over and it seems to not get corrected. I'm no Xs and Os guy,  I only know what I see and I see TEs always wide open down field and in middle of this defense. Obviously a pass rush would help a lot.  But watching other games,  other defenses aren't this vulnerable. Gotta feel for Nelson man,  seems like every tackle he makes is a TD saving take down. Something has got to change.

What were your expectations because they've been torched for 396 yesterday and 423 last week?
I think you misunderstood me.  I expected them to have some difficult times, but nothing nearly this bad.  I expected to see some progress and some strong games with some lapses and struggles mixed in.  I did not expect a train wreck.  I thought Amerson and Smith would be competent and the safeties would be inconsistent but able to occasionally make some plays.  Maybe it's just the offenses we've faces and the smoothing of curves is still to come, but thus far it's been a clown show.

I think the problem is that they are playing exactly to their talent level.  I'm on record not liking the secondary or LB talent level.  " But our secondary and LB have only gone from hot mess to not very good and can absolutely cost us games. "  This was one they cost us and last week nearly was.  I also think you can't fix it all at once and you can't expect miracles.  No, 2-4 more games isn't enough unless guys are quitting on him like they did on Allen in London.  This is a work in progress still.  This is our 2016 team.  We need the O to carry us and we'll need Carr to bail the D out at times.  Last week he was able to.  This week he wasn't.

The thing that is disturbing is that the Raiders do not seem to have answer on defense. For the most part they stay in their base sets and do not send extra people to improve the pass rush. Same can be said with the issue of covering the TE. There is not a lot of creativity on defense to cover the deficiencies, and this lays at the feet of Norton. Just for comparison, what would Billichick do with this defense? Doubt BB would stay in base as much as I see today.

ALAMEDA, Calif. (AP) -- After watching his defense give up more yards in the first two weeks than any team in NFL history  , Oakland Raiders coach Jack Del Rio has seen enough.

Del Rio said Monday he wants to see rookies Karl Joseph and Cory James get more playing time, defensive calls get made quicker, and players to follow their assignments properly after the defense cost Oakland in a 35-28 loss to the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday.

This is year five of the rebuild.  There is no way the defense should be this bad at this point.  The Raiders seem to be using the Seattle scheme that uses very little blitzing.  The problem with that is Seattle could get to the QB with four rushers and had very good LBs and safeties that could cover.  The coaches have to be able to adjust to the personnel and if things are not working need to be able to make adjustments.

It's one thing to be bad... But to be historically bad is another.  Look what the Giants did. Last season they were one of the worst defenses in history. They add a few key pieces (Vernon, Jenkins, Apple) and so far, they're turning it around. They completely shut down Brees last week. Maybe the Raiders went after the wrong free agents.

Norton is in his 2nd season along with JDR.  Raiders had no picks in 2012 and no cap space until 2014 at a time the entire roster needed/got an overhaul.  You get 7 picks and 2-4 meaningful FA signings per year.  They would need 100% hit rate to fix it in three years, and they aren't going to come close to that.  Despite the enthusiasm and kudos we've gotten, a lot of these successful picks/FA signings aren't going to pan out long term.  That's not on Norton.  It's been two games against historically effective passing offenses.  Norton needs time to assess, evaluate, and adapt the gameplans.  Firing a guy after 18 games is clown-show stuff best left in the Al days.

I'm not advocating firing him right now, but if things did not improve significantly from now till the end of the year I would not be against going in a different direction then.

how bad/not ready can joseph be, that he isn't getting any playing time?

the secondary is a joke.  the falcons were running easy base routes and were WIDE open.  smith is awful.  next level bad, i'd rather dj was in there getting burnt and committing penalties.  he at least cares and shows emotion and has flashes of skill.  smith just seems big, slow and not committed.

and why are we not using the deep ball as a weapon?  the falcons were in one on one coverage most of the time and we throw one/two deep balls all game?  i don't get it.

parking lot was going off, crowd was great.  defense was a joke.  delanie walker is giggling in his sleep this week.

And this is one of the reasons why I luv Reggie McKenzie...

Sean Smith's contract essentially a one year deal with annual club options going forward and no cap penalty if cut after this season. $20 MM was not fully guaranteed. Only $11 MM, which comes off the books this year if this cat doesn't improve and we decide move on. This structure was probably the reason why it took so long to sign him (remember all the hand wringing that was going on about the delay in getting him signed once the rumors broke that he was visiting us).

Sean Smith signed a 4 year, $38,000,000 contract with the Oakland Raiders, including a $5,000,000 signing bonus, $20,000,000 guaranteed, and an average annual salary of $9,500,000. In 2016, Smith will earn a base salary of $5,750,000, a roster bonus of $5,000,000 and a workout bonus of $250,000. Smith has a cap hit of $11,000,000 while his dead money value is $11,000,000.

Even though I am a little disappointed in the D, I am happy with the O and the direction of this team.  Hopefully, the D improves in the next few games.  I do not expect greatness but the O cannot be expected to score 35+ every week either.

I am more than a little disappointed in the defense but they aren't going to remain historically bad and will probably finish somewhere around middle of the pack.

However I think if the offense doesn't score 35+ points/week some people will be calling for the Raiders to trade Carr for a Rusty Staub and a swift kick in the nuts.  "He's garbage!"

James starting over Heeney as well.  Good to see the coaching staff is not afraid to make changes if things are not working.

Game should have been salted away early.  Lot of drops by receivers today.

Cory James started today, had 7 tackles, but there are similar problems as Heeney--he's little.  6'1'', 230, if the guards get to him, he's blocked.  Heeney barely played, I saw one snap after James got dinged, and the blitzed him.  His stat line was zeros across the board, and 1 QB hit.  He is REALLY in the doghouse.

The D-line isn't keeping the LBs clean.  Autry is a penetrator, and Ward and Latham are rookies.  They all played a lot, but none demand double teams. Mario Edwards is needed.

Khalil Mack was invisible.

Karl Joseph should start or the next 9 years or so.  Looked good.

Sean Smith was good, and Amerson was awesome.  Pro Bowl votes should come his way.

There is bad coaching happening on both sides of the ball, confusion on players coming in and out on offense, false starts, and that is on Del Rio, Musgrave, and Norton.

Having said that, I liked the offensive play calls, but the players beat themselves.  No defense this year has just been stopping the offense.  The offense has stalled after a holding call, or dropped  pass, or got a false start on 2nd and 3.  With no mental mistakes, they roll right down the field.  Young team making young mistakes.

The ofensive line pass blocking is ridiculous.  I swear I saw Carr yawning a couple times.

Crabtree's hands are ridiculous.  We shoulda drafted him.

Carr's decision-making has been almost flawless this year.  He somehow manages to take a lot of deep shots, and avoid putting the ball in harm's way.  Would not trade him for any other young QB in the league.

Too bad about Clive Walford's TD getting called back.  I'd like to see him get 5+ targets a game.

Both the young RBs look better than Latavius.  Both of them.

I agree about Crabtree. We should have drafted him years ago. That being said the Raiders were so bad during those years I doubt he would still be here with the Raiders I think he would have bolted a long time ago.

This in a nutshell. A win is a win. I have to keep reminding myself there are four rookies getting a lot of playing time on defense right now, there's going to be struggles at times. Amerson is turning out to be a great CB. Other than letting Amaro get behind him for a big gain,  Hayden had one of his better games I thought. He got a lot of playing time yesterday and is a strong tackled for a DB. Latham and Ward are getting a lot of playing too. Two rookies on the Dline might be part of the reason why Mack is struggling to get to the QB. No excuse for lining up offsides twice though.

Great post. This team still concerns me but I'm happy to be 2-1. There is plenty of room for improvement. And, there must be improvement to be a playoff team.

Denver and KC both still look like the real deal and San Diego is not far behind but injuries are definitely hurting them more than most.  It's going to be difficult to get even a wild card spot from this division but the Raiders do have a shot.  The defense needs to keep getting better and where the hell is Mack?

I will say that Hayden is starting to look like a solid slot corner and I was really impressed when he laid two big hits yesterday.  If the Raiders can start generating some pass rush that secondary could be scary good.

I agree that this game was not as close as the score suggests. Besides some key drops Carr was having accuracy issues again. He threw a lot of passes that were high or behind receivers.

'Lots'?  I don't know about that.  He was 21 for 35... And there were 4 clear drops that I can recall off the top of my head. Roberts, 2 by Cooper, and Walford.  And I'm sure that there are more that could be found to be on the receiver not on the accuracy of Carr.   Add in balls that were thrown away due to coverage or pressure, and those where the Titan D made a good play in coverage, what's left?

big test next week.  can they win on the east coast?

the offensive play calling seems off to me.  we need to run the ball more imho.  it's nearly a 50/50 split, but i think if the run game was feared a little more, the play action would be even more effective.

what the #### was norton waiting for with joseph?

Poor choice of words. I recall at least 3 passes that were poorly. One was behind the receiver in the flat hat would have easily picked up a first down and kept drive going. If I find time I will replay the game and give a more accurate total. The take away is that I have noticed that Carr is missing some very easy completions at certain points that causes the offense to bog down.

i think this team believes in themselves and they seem to have a lot of character ...i see them growing leaps and bounds over the next few months

Did the team travel back to the West Coast for the week? I know they got up for the 1PM eastern game this past week, two weeks in a row has to be really tough.

I thought they were going to stay on the east coast, but I'm not sure.  I believe I read that the Raiders asked the NFL to schedule the games at Tennessee and Baltimore and at Jacksonville and Tampa on back to back weeks so they could stay out east both times and the NFL shockingly complied.
