2016 Oakland Raiders thread (1 Viewer)

Bruce Irvin - LB - Raiders

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports the Raiders agreed to terms with SLB Bruce Irvin, formerly of the Seahawks,

Being dubbed a "pass rusher" by the media, Irvin has just 22 career sacks in four full seasons. He's more of a run-stopping strong-side linebacker and should greatly improve that area of Oakland's defense. He could also be asked to play defensive end after Justin Tuck retired, Aldon Smith was suspended, and Mario Edwards suffered what's believed to be a potentially career-threatening neck injury as a 2015 rookie. Irvin's signing reunites him with DC Ken Norton, who coached LBs in Seattle through the 2014 season. The Raiders had a boatload of money to spend, and have now landed LT Kelechi Osemele and Irvin as free agents.

Really love the Irvin signing ... I think he is much better than he was used in Seattle. Not to take away from anything the 'Hawks do defensively - because what they do works. That being said, I always thought Bruce was never used the way he should've been. The guy is a missle off the edge - and he's also got that "weird/crazy" about him.

He fell into the Seahawk system - as he should have. But that doesn't mean that's the player he was. Opposite Mack, this guy is going to have a career year next year - QB's are going to have to have their heads on a swivel.

love everything the Raiders are doing (Lions homer here, but have always had a thing for the Raiders)

really nice if they can resign Penn - give Latavius an actual line and another year to show himself in that offense.

Raiders amping up the pursuit of Janoris Jenkins per source. Getting a top CB is a must

Really liking the KO and Irvin signings.

Gimme Weddle and either Smith or Jenkins and I'll be stoked for this year's free agency.

No thanks to Dougie fresh Martin at 7 mil per. Would MUCH rather have the above free agents and Zeke Elliot in Rd 1.

Not really excited one way or another about Irving -- he's a solid NFL caliber player who will add value, but I think he flourished with all the help around him on the line and in the backfield on Seattle, and in and of himself isn't truly dominant at either end or as an OLB. However, Norton knows what he has in Irving, and the upside is tangible.

If we somehow land Jenkins and Weddle, in my estimation we landed three of top 10 UFA prospects (including Osemele), where 5 of those top 10 were franchised by their respective teams (Vom Miller, Eric Berry, Wilkerson, Norman, Glenn), 1 signed to another team (Malik Jackson with the Jags) and 1 still out there (Alex Mack).

That would really be a huge injection of quality talent that fills definitive needs (and at most optimistic, gives us a realistic shot at a playoff run), and will let us just focus on BPA in the draft.

We've weathered a pretty awful storm these last multiple years, lads, but if these final pieces come together, I'll be more excited about our upcoming season than I have been since Gruden came aboard to right the ship at the turn of the millenium.

Literally the best case scenario for all raiders fans. KO, Irvin, Weddle, Smith/Jenkins, then draft a BPA kind of player like Elliot.

Crazy thing is, we're almost half way there.

#NFL sources say #Raiders have significant interest in Rashad Johnson. The #AZCardinals safety would fill leadership role of Charles Woodson

KO and Jenkins would be a rather large coup for the Raiders.  26 and 27 and all arrows pointing up for the team and those players.

I'm not as big on Irvin (he does add a single dimension that is needed, but lacks a ton in his game) but would be willing to see if things "click" as he rejoins with Malcom Smith. I also understand that its a good thing to add as you have to wait and see on DE ('cuz he was DE when I watched him) Aldon Smith. If you have some ideas on playoffs, you can never really have too many pass rushers - as they get winded badly.

Right on ! I was starting to feel this last year, excitement wise and the future just keeps getting brighter, love it ...

By the way, the fact that no Irvin contract details should be very good news. Agents rush to leak the deal if it's big money, Janoris Jenkins as an example. If it's a team-friendly deal, agent doesn't say a word. Every other deal out there has $$ attached, except Irvin. I like that a lot.

So Jenkins was signed for 5 yr $62M with $29 guaranteed? That's extraordinarily rich, and as much as I think he's one of the better CBs, will definitely be glad if the Raiders get two UFAs for the price of Jenkins in guys like Weddle and Sean Smith.

Rashad and Reggie Nelson on the Bengals are both good FSs that could add a degree of range over the top we need, but simply prefer Weddle at the spot.

C'mon, Raiders, get 'er done.

Irvin - 4 yrs $37mm (up to $39mm with incentives) - only $12.5mm first year salary guaranteed.

KO - 5 yrs $58.5mm - rumors are $20mm first year with only $25mm total guaranteed.

The total dollar figures aren't small, but I LOVE that these contracts can be terminated after the first year or two with little to ZERO cap penalty. Also, they are front loaded, so that we'll have cap space to sign Carr and Mack after next season.

Lastly, did you see Marvin Jones' deal???  Crabtree, yo.

Reggie was a Godsend for this franchise.

I would think Sean Smith would cost about the same as Jenkins, maybe a little less.

What's up boys?  I'm liking what the team has done so far. God, it'll be nice to have some respect again!  I think we are on the right track!!

This has been a good FA for the Raiders so far and it is early.  Adding Sean Smith will only make it better.  I am starting to really get my hopes up for the 2016 season.

The debate about Reggie can be put to rest for now.  He has done a wonderful job in the last couple of years.

+1

Freaking brilliant.  Wish we could have gotten Trevathan like that.  Glad we're avoiding the Malik/Olivier monsters.

Some more good news:  We have $88 mill in contracts for 2017.  And that includes Lofton at 6 mill.  So let's call it $82 mill.

It'll probably be close to 100 mill by September.  We're probably looking at 60 mill in cap space next year.  Can re-sing Carr or Mack with ease, and give roster bonuses.  So nice.

Maybe, maybe not -- Smith is 2 years older, had substance suspension which may factor into a discount, really only came on later in the season, and had plenty of help on that Chief's D. We'll see -- we have the cash to outlay regardless.

As far as up front money, I would be SHOCKED if he got less than Jenkins.  That's the market, and he's the best left by far.

If we don't get him, not the end of the world.  Hayard, Amukamara, etc.  But I would pay him.

Raiders finally end the cliffhanger and sign Smith:  4 years, 40 mill, 20 mill guaranteed (so, I am sure, it's a 2 year deal, worst case scenario).

Amazing.

Have added to defensive starters, and a top flight OL.

Up next:  safety.  Weddle, Rashad Johnson, Walter Thurmond, David Bruton?

This is always the time of year to be optimistic but I can't view this offseason as anything other than phenomenal.  Getting the safety they desperately need (And hopefully resigning Donald Penn or Kelvin Beachum) would make this the best offseason (on paper) they have had in years.

And to think that at this time last year people were calling for Reggie's head.
Hey, I'm willing to forgive and forget.

He should get a ton of credit as well for the contracts.  It's tough enough to get the right players, but getting team-friendly deals is just as hard.

The Broncos had to let homegrown talent go because of free agents they signed.  Raiders are set up to have flexibility with all these free agents, when it comes time to re-sign the draft picks.  All these deals?  If they are playing well in two or three years, they get their contract.  If not, they are gone with no dead cap.  Irvin could be gone in three years to help pay Mack's salary.  If Smith declines as a player, gone.  No signing bonuses that tie the team to the player.

Reggie knows that free agency isn't how he's gonna build a consistent winner.  He's set up to pay his own draftees.  He must be having a little bit of fun with free agency though, right?

What's funny is, NOW is the time Reggie likes:  Bargain hunting.  I'm pretty excited to see the 2nd and 3rd tier free agents he gets.

Here's a nice read from last year:  http://www.rotoworld.com/articles/nfl/53473/57/goal-line-stand

25. Reggie McKenzie, Raiders

Last Year’s Ranking: 29 (out of 29)

What’s left to say about the Reggie McKenzie era in Oakland? The team hasn’t improved on the dark ages of Al Davis’ final days. It’s gotten worse, going 11-37 across three seasons. That includes a 2-24 “record” on the road. McKenzie hasn’t added impact players in free agency, and has scarcely done better in the draft. Yes, Khalil Mack is looking like a home run, but your odds of hitting it over the fence aren’t exactly low when you’re picking inside the top five. The hopeful refrain from McKenzie’s early days was “wait until he gets cap space.” This year, he had it. What did he do with it? Sign Trent Richardson, giving the worst running back in the league $600,000 guaranteed. There was no run at Ndamukong Suh, and only a cursory connection to Darrelle Revis. Typically, it’s smart not to build through free agency, but the Raiders may not even hit the league’s cap floor. That’s simply inexcusable for a roster with as little talent as McKenzie’s. McKenzie is overmatched, plain and simple. It’s not a question of if he’ll be around to finish the job he started. He won’t. The question is whether he’ll leave the roster in better shape than Davis did.

That article was actually pretty spot on when it was written. HUGE progress in the last 12 months.  Cautiously optimistic, whoever wins March rarely wins in January, but we're definitely improving this team.

No it wasn't remotely "spot on" it was horribly wrong at the time and is even more wrong 12 months later.  Revis and Suh were not the answer for the Raiders last year and would have hurt them in future years.  The Dolphins are already trying to restructure Suh ($60 million guaranteed) and Revis ($40 million guaranteed) has dropped off, he's still very good (maybe great at times) but overpriced.

Reggie is trying to build a core group of young players that you can surround with talented, intelligent, win-first veterans, who are locker room leaders and coaches on the field, signed to cap-friendly deals to create a culture of winning and an organization primed for sustained success.  You don't do that with me first, cap-killers like Suh and Revis no matter how talented they are on paper.

Sounds like we signed Sean Smith!

The dream off season continues!

I'm just going to focus on how much better things look 12 months later.  Love this FA period so far, great balance between aggression/impact and risk mitigation with these contracts.

Remember the days (mere months ago, actually) when it was nigh impossible to convince anyone to come play for the Raiders?

Patience is a virtue. Reggie has more than earned benefit of a doubt, he truly kicked it up a notch over this last year +.
