2016 Oakland Raiders thread (1 Viewer)

Watching the Raiders sign talented players still in their prime to Cap friendly deals is weird. Don't get me wrong, I like it, it's just weird. It's a quantum leap forward for us. Reggie did a hell of a job getting us out of cap hell and these contracts make sure we don't get stuck there again. He's done a great job.

 
Only one talking head's (Pete Prisco) opinion in terms of rankings, but good to see ol' Randolph's face cropping up so many times in the Top 10. Filling in #5 with the shield would literally make me ecstatic. Literally.

And as a bonus, TIL that the Raiders' logo was fashioned after the visage of Randolph Scott.  Can't believe I've never heard/knew this before. Going out to watch Return of the Bad Men once again....

 
Gimme Weddle (and/or Rashad Johnson),

Then Penn, Casey Hayward and Robert Ayers (or Nick Fairley) on the cheap, 

Plus Zeke Elliott at 1.14 and this will be a dream offseason.

All without sacrificing our 2018/2019 cap in the slightest!! Reggie laying the blueprint for the rest of the league on how to rebuild a team.

 
A lot of people seem to want Weddle and I think it would be a good signing too, but I am a little  more interested in Rashad Johnson just because he came from an Arizona team that seems to be the very definition of the no excuses/next man up mentality since Arians took over.  I think it would be great if he could bring some of that mentality to Oakland.

I also think Casey Hayward would be a nice signing to fill the slot corner role, although I wonder if they are planning to put Hayden in that spot.

Kelvin Beachum I think could also be a good signing.  Coming off the ACL he may come at a reduced price and he is six years younger than Penn who, let's be honest, slipped some last season.

Ayers would be interesting but Fairley scares me.  I would only bring him in on an incentive laden contract.  I think he'll coast if he gets too much guaranteed money.

I was opposed to the idea of Zeke Elliott before free agency began, but it is looking much better now.  Still don't see them doing that but it sure seems like more of a possibility than it did on Tuesday.

 
I must be a bigger fan of Latavius than many others but I think he can hold down the job in the backfield just fine.  Particularly with improvements along the line.  He definitely was a disappointment last season but I think expectations were unreasonably high coming off some of his big runs the year before.  If they resign Penn or land Beachum I think he will significantly improve over 2015 and RB becomes a lower priority.  

I think a complimentary player like Bilal Powell would fit in nicely with Murray.

Just saw that Powell resigned with the Jets.

I don't want to see big Reg pay up for any of Penn/Hayward/Ayers/Fairley - but on the cheap, I'll take them.

I think Lat Murray needs a compliment and a competitor at his level or higher to bring out the best in him. Zeke would do that. Plus, Lat's a free agent after this season, so it would be good to bring on an insurance policy in case his price gets to be too high. Look at what muscle hampster and Ivory got this year ($7mm per year). No way I'd want to pay that for Murray. Compare that to last year's #1.14 rookie ( 4 years, $10.9M; $6.2M signing bonus )

Very good point.  I wouldn't complain about drafting Zeke at this point, I wanted the best DB available prior to yesterday.  But things change in a hurry.

 
Not much left to get excited about on the offensive skill position market.  

At WR Rueben Randle, IMO, would be an upgrade over Streater/Holmes.  Anyone else would be fighting for a roster spot.

Chris Johnson and James Starks are really the only RB that I would be interested in because they is a serviceable replacement level players.  Alfred Morris seems too one dimensional to me and Matt Asiata just isn't very good.  Arian Foster anyone?

Not interested in any TE on the market.

Lots of offensive tackles still left with Penn, Beachum, Okung and Andre Smith.

Not much but depth options for interior linemen but Louis Vasquez was above average at one time and is still on the right side of 30.

On the defensive side there seems to be a lot more available.

A lot of us thought the Raiders would go after Terrance Knighton last year and they have another shot at him.  He may be more interested now in longer term stability than trying to break the bank like last year.  LawFitz mentioned Ayers and Fairly and they have potential to make a real improvement on the team.  Personally, though, I would still love to see them make a run at Howie Jr. just because he's Howie Jr.  Also Junior Galette will only be 28 this month and while coming off an injury he definitely knows how to get after the QB.  Probably not a scheme fit and may be a head case but if he can be had on the cheap (ala a Crabtree "show me" contract) it could be worth it.  Are teams allowed to negotiate with Aldon Smith or do they have to wait until the suspension is lifted?

James Laurinaitis is really the only MLB that may be worth a shot but he may be running low on gas.  Everyone else is old or just not very good.

No 4-3 OLBs out there that are very interesting.

No need to rehash DBs.

Now I need to go see how many of these guys were signed while I was typing this.

 
Miami just signed CJ Anderson to a $4.5mil/year offer sheet. After the Ivory, Miller and Martin deals that seems low. It would almost be worth it to throw a $5-5.5mil/year offer at him just to make Denver's life more difficult.  I think they would be more inclined to match an offer from Oakland than Miami.

 
Igniring CJ who was never a real optuon I forgot that Benny Cunningham is still out there and I like him as a cheap complimentary option to Latavius.

Sean Witherspoon is also a player I like and fits a 4-3 scheme but probably too similar to Malcolm Smith and the Raiders seem to mix in the 3-4 enough to make him a questionable acquisition.

As you stated he already signed an offer sheet with Miami.  That's it he can't get another offer.

 
Regarding the 1st rounder:

Smith and Amerson are good starters, better than most (that's weird to say).

But Amerson's contract is up after this year.  If he has a good year for us, he can expect a big pay raise.  Right now, I would guess he doesn't re-sign.  Carrie and Hayden cannot be considered starting CBs at this time.  CB is still a need.  As is safety, but we ain't taking a safety at #14.  

The signing of Smith doesn't mean we HAVE to take a CB at #14, thank god, but it doesn't lessen the position as a possibility.  I'm still hoping we continue to add defense in this draft.  Not a safety, but my short list right now is:  Hargreaves, Alexander, Jackson III, Sheldon Rankins, Darron Lee.  I guess one of the DEs is a possibility too (Lawson or Dodd), but I feel like D-line is in a pretty good spot, and the back 7 needs more work.  There's going to be a solid defender there for us at #14.  If I had my choice, I'd want either a good corner, or a penetrating 3-tech to rotate with the big boys.  

We can get a RB off the street/later in the draft to act as a caddy to Latavius, and maybe be a 1A.  Taking a 1,000 yard back, and making him a backup by using a 1st rounder.....that doesn't seem like the best use of draft resources to me.  Especially because with Osemele, Howard and Watson healthy, and Gabe a year older, we might have an O-line that just brutalizes people.  

This draft is strong with defense, and that's what we need.

Not excited about Hendeson, really.  However, if he's an upgrade over Lofton as a short-yardage thumper, OK.  

I was hoping for Tahir Whitehead, but he re-upped.

 
I might just wet myself if we sign Weddle after what we've done so far in free agency.

I want us to sign ANOTHER solid corner as well, though.

ETA: Heck, sign TWO safeties. Upgrade upgrade upgrade across the board, baby. Let 'em fight it out in camp and the strongest survive.

I'm with you all the way.  Honestly, safety is such a mess, that I would love two more.  But I think only one is on the horizon.  I'm cool with Rashad/Weddle/Thurmond.  Really, they are all an upgrade over Neiko and that other clown we picked up from Cincy.  

Corner, I would love a slot guy, but I think I'd love a draft pick more.  If we went into the year with Smith, Amerson, Carrie, Hayden, draft pick, and Dexter McDonald, that sounds good to me.  

We need to take a closer look at McDonald.  He might be OK.

I've been on trial for about a week and have been out of the loop for the most part.  I have to dig out my desk tomorrow then I'm off to Vegas for the weekend for some much needed R&R.  I'll give my buddy a shout next week and see if I can shake anything loose from the information tree.  Don't worry, if I hear anything in the interim, I'll post it here.

This is in response to Bruce Irvin. Mack is a huge difference to why we are getting better free agents this offseason.  ;)

This guy has a lot of credibility among draft guys for his Force Players formula.  Basically, he's come up with a formula using career data and workout numbers, to rate pass rushers.  It's got a pretty amazing hit rate, and really is good at predicting busts, and hits.

This year, he says there is only to Force players:  Shaq Lawson and Jonathan Bullard.

I hope we keep going D in the draft. Ragland would be nice if the corners are gone. Speed on the edge and a young run stuffer in the middle.

 
Agree with the focus on D -- in FA and potentially in draft if the right BPA drops to us.

But thoughts on other positions: Saw Kearse re-upped with the Seahawks. Not that this FA crop had a lot of interesting WR candidates, but Kearse was a guy I had my eye on as someone who could have helped us. He is the kind of posession-type receiver that really came on strong as a dependable option downfield across many routes of the tree -- and a good reason why Russell Wilson's ratings were stellar. Hopefully the new OLine can make more of an impact for Murray (Osemele did wonders for Forsett), but having another quality receiver would help balance the attack that much more.

Have the Falcons not resigned Devonta Freeman?

I wasn't sure that is how it worked.   I was a little drinky last night and just spinning my wheels.  Even if they don't make another move it has already been a great off season in Oakland.

Reuben Randle is still out there and I like him more than Kearse.

Devonta Freeman is still on his rookie deal through 2017.

 
When I did a search for @SeanSmith24, and did 'ALL' as opposed to 'TOP', it was clear.  

I spent 3 minutes scrolling down, and it was 15-1 Raiders to 49ers fans, talking up Raider Nation.  It was pretty great.

At the end of the day, Oakland signed Bruce Irvin for less than half of what the Giants are paying Olivier Vernon. Then proceeded to land Sean Smith on a deal worth significantly less than the one Janoris Jenkins signed in New York.

Bruce Irvin has been underutilized and misused during his NFL career. He is a heat seeking missile heading for the QB. His athleticism is ridiculous. Watch him in the WVU-Clemson Orange bowl. Ridiculous.

J Webb was on Sirius NFL Radio this morning being interviewed by Ross Tucker.  A few points:

1.  Webb is a horrible interview.  Didn't answer questions, and could barely talk.

2.  Doesn't sound like he wants to play the interior line anymore.  Basically said it was too fast, and too difficult. 

3.  Wants an opportunity to start at the tackle position.

4.  Raiders have made an offer, but it didn't sound like Webb liked how he would be used.

5.  Has an visit lined up with the Seahawks.

6.  His favorite word is "...Uh..."

7.  He likes to eat.

Best part was realizing that Tucker and Booger wanted him off the phone and started feeding him very simple questions to move things along.

Raiders re-signed exclusive rights free agent WR Seth Roberts.

He'll make the minimum salary for a third-year player. Beating out Rod Streater for the Raiders' third receiver job last year, Roberts tallied 32 catches for 480 yards and five touchdowns while spending most of his time in the slot. The 25-year-old out of West Alabama is worth rostering in Dynasty leagues as a surefire starter if Amari Cooper or Michael Crabtree went down.

 
Boykin seems like a guy MacKenzie might go after. Good slot CB that may be undervalued on the market because of under use with other teams. I think would further stabilize the secondary.
