2016 Oakland Raiders thread (2 Viewers)

I kinda feel bad for Jack. Joseph might be a tad early, but if he's their guy all along then I'm on board. I do wonder if Tunsil had slipped past Miami if Reggie would have drafted him.

nice pick, Reggie.

Secondary rebuild COMPLETE!

Bet Reggie signs one more bargain bin DB or Safety to increase competition at those positions. (stating the obvious there though, right?)

Can't wait to see who falls to round 2. I think SOMEONE makes a move to move up to the 2.1. They have all night to stew on the guy They Must Have and work a trade out overnight.

Excitement continues...

I love the Karl Joseph pick. I have been wanting him to be drafted by the Raiders for months now. Love this pick. He is going to quickly become one of my favorite Raiders to watch play on Sunday.

As someone who doesn't watch any college football. Has to be a good sign when:

1) The highlight tape looks good

2) The media "scouts" love him

3) Fans loves him

4) REGGIE PICKED HIM!!!!

I'm pretty sure we added a stud if he returns healthy.

Isn't it pretty safe to assume that we shouldn't be happy drafting Jack at this point? Love the guy, but him falling out of the first round seems like a pretty bright signal that the medical pros have checked him out and it's worse than everyone thought.  I mean, we need a middle backer more than anything and we passed on Jack for a guy with a knee injury. Pass... Unfortunately

I still want defense this round.

Wish list for #44:

Chris Jones
Jonathan Bullard-
These are different size guys, but do similar things.  Inside pressure, can play the edge.  Bullard probably more of a 3 tech.  Either one of these would be a grand slam to me.

Myles Jack--At some point the reward outweighs the risk.  Same with Jaylon.  But on these two, we as fans can only shrug, and hope our medical staff gave good advice.

Mackensie Alexander--Can the team go back to back on secondary?  I wonder.  If not, I want to see an Amerson extension this summer.  I would not be upset or surprised if we took Xavien Howard, either.

Reggie Ragland--2nd round?  Sounds good to me.  Sounds really good.  Saw a great piece by Jeremiah, and he said you cannot get ANYONE at Alabama to say a bad thing about the kid.  Fits the Raider mold of size and character.

Players I would be OK with:

Jordan Jenkins--He might go later?  Not sure, but I love him.  Only thing is, he might not fit our needs.  He's an edge setting OLB, can play DE as well.  We have like three of these guys already.  Probably not a nickel LB.

Su'a Cravens--I have no problem spending a 2nd rounder on a nickel LB.  Carolina spent a 1st on one last year.  Would fill a huge need.  He said he's a safety, which I don't like him saying.  I also think we might be able to get a similar style of player later.  Does Cravens have a special nose for the ball?  If so, good pick.

A'Shawn Robinson, Andre Billings, Javon Hargrave, Willie Henry--DTs that are pretty interesting, but considered a tier below.  Which, frankly, shouldn't mean much.  Hargrave might be the best interior pass rusher in this draft.  He was a holy terror at S. Carolina St.  Robinson, Jarran Reed, and Billings, I dunno if they can provide pass rush from the inside. We already have block eaters.

Players I am hoping go in front of us:

Connor Cook
Derrick Henry
Tyler Boyd
Braxton Miller
Michael Thomas
Hunter Henry
Cody Whitehair
--Any and all interior offensive linemen, more the merrier
Kevin Dodd
Noah Spence
Emmanuel Ogbah
Vonn Bell

I thought you were a fan of Spence, Mass?
Not me.  One dimensional pass rusher that is not really a special athlete with character concerns.

I would bet money we don't get another edge guy.  Mack/Mario/Irvin/Aldon/Autry can all play DE in some form.

Some of you guys are funny. I swear that I never saw anyone say anything about Joseph being their guy with our pick but then there is a bunch of posts about him always being our guy.

So, from the description of his positives/negatives and body type (height/weight) am I wrong in saying that he seems more like a FS than SS? Nelson is obviously getting long in the tooth but he is no SS for sure. Are we going to be playing Joseph out of position to start his career?

I think Jack is more tempting in the 2nd round. Unlike Smith where the question is can he come back and play, it seems like Jack is more about career longevity and potential further surgeries. For a guy with his talent level I think the 2nd round will be hard to pass him up unless your docs really are telling you something different from what reports we are hearing.

I think Jaylon continues to fall. I think 3rd we start thinking about it and if he is there in the 4th we stop thinking and pull the trigger and roll the dice.

Ragland. No. Not even worth a 2nd to us. My position is that if he can't cover then he can't play for us and even more so now with a question on his health.

A few pretty good DT's that I think we will be looking long and hard at.

If Alexander is there- I don't care that we took a S in the 1st, I think that he has a very good case to being the BPA in the 2nd at our pick.

That all said- Henry may very well be our pick if he is there. He is basically exactly the runner that it has been said the organization wants to pair up with Murray. He is not just your typical 'big back' either in that he has some speed for his size and is pretty darn quick too. (IIRC he had the top shuttle performance at combine among backs)- It is hard for me to imagine another player that would beat him out in the BPA available discussion if he is still there.

I think that Raider Twitter liked Joseph. Of course,  Joseph was one of those guys everyone seemed to like.  But once word got out that he was moving up draft boards,  I thought we would go D-line or CB there,  and address S later.  It seemed like KJ was going between our picks.   To me anyway.

Reggie was pretty clear that there were no trade offers, or he would have taken it.  So,  they took a guy i like.

I wanted Rankins,  or WJIII, but I was ready to take Myles Jack,  which we now know would have been a major reach.

I dunno,  once the draft actually happens,  I tend to try and forget all the stuff we have been told,  and focus on what happened.

There wasn't a lot of chatter but Joseph was brought up a bit prior to the draft.

I'm fine with Joseph, addresses an area of need and time will tell how he pans out as an NFL starter vs Keanu or a CB like Williams III.

As I think about it, wonder what we would have done if Tunsil dropped. Either way, love the way Joseph plays, and very clear we wouldn't have been able to nab him in Round 2.

Also clear that everyone else was also worried about Jack's knee and the short term risk, so don't feel too bad about not taking him at that spot though I still think he is one of the best in the draft and will absolutely make a difference until he needs microsurgery. For your #1 pick (and for us in upper mid-round), can see why risk aversion would dictate you look for a safer pick.

Guess I would also have been happy with an LB like Darron Lee there (you guys scared me off of Ragland), but between Lee and Joseph, would have had emotional regret about not getting a Ronnie-Lott style bad-### in Joseph, so cool with it. Other guys we could have considered is Lawson or Jackson III, but again, more or less ambivalent given that I just love Joseph and how he plays. Hope he overcomes the knock on size at the next level.

Back to Jack -- no way he lasts to us at 13. Makes so much sense for anyone in RD2, and can see him being snatched off the board pretty much right away, potentially by Cleveland, the Jags, or Giants. If he is there, I don't see the opportunity to move up and grab him, and not sure it's the right move if we could, though it's tempting. If he dpes slip to us, seems like an automatic pick and a blessing.

And if we don't have a shot, who do we target? A RB like Derrick Henry or Booker? ILB like Ragland, Borthers, or Scooby Wright? A DT like Robinson or an end like Spense or Ogbah?

The thing about Jack and the 1st is do you even get to that valuable 5th year option. I have a feeling he will go early in the 2nd as that is taken out of the equation.

Alexander

Billings

These guys are first round talents IMO. I hope one or both is left at 2.14 and we grab either.

If Jack falls again it's bad sign.

Billings' arms are so short, I had to double check that he had elbows.

Alexander would be really hard to fathom.  Funny thing, I was thinking about the final roster, and the DBs are getting a little crowded.

Smith
Amerson
Nelson
Joseph
Carrie

Hayden
Allen
Thorpe

I think these 8 players make the team.  Hayden, Allen, Thorpe could all be cut, but will most likely stay for various reasons.

McDonald (Dexter)
Trawick

I think both of these have a very good chance to make the team.  Trawick as a backup S, special teamer (whom we just signed), and McDonald as a corner who was called up late, and looked pretty good.

That's 10 guys, before any of the other possibilities scattered around the roster.

Alexander being there at #44 would be interesting.

Joseph was a solid pick.  There was not a lot of stand-out talent in this years first round.  However, there is a lot of solid players in the 2nd round for Reggie to choose from.  As long as he sticks to his game of choosing quality players instead of reaching for need, we will have another starter out of round 2.    Chadstroma summed it up well at the top of this page.

I was hoping for Joseph in the 2nd but clearly he wasn't going to be there. That tells me Reggie has a real good feel for the draft and who teams are targeting, which was re-enforced by Atlanta's pick. My biggest fear was that Nkemdiche was going to be the pick but by the way Tunsil was dropping (he's buds with NK) I had a feeling they were going to pass on him.

I wouldn't mind Henry next but I think the next pick will be Reggie's BPA whoever that is. I think Joseph was a need pick more so than BPA, I like him but that's my opinion.

Poor Myles, I feel bad for him. A kid that talented to drop so far tells me the knee is worse than what we originally thought. I'd definitely pass on him in the 2nd. I'm rooting for him, wherever he goes though.

I don't care, he's such a beast on tape and he just turned 21. A mix of Williams/Jelly/Billings to keep all of them fresh is foundational IMO.

But I would prefer Alexander based on positional value and depth in this draft. Also, Alexander as CB3 would see the field more than Billings as DT3. Amerson + Joseph + Smith + Nelson + Alexander would be one hell of a 12-month turnaround.

What is killing Myles and Smith is the unknown. For Myles the unknown is essentially how much time will you have him? For the 1st round- if he doesn't make it to the 5th year option which is hugely valuable to an organization then it is a big roll of the dice. I think teams will be more willing to take the risk on with him starting now. So, it seems worst case scenario is you have him for a few years.

For Smith the unknown is can he come back and at what level? That is a whole different kind of risk. You might not have him at all. I think teams will think about it in the 3rd but most likely he is taken in the 4th.

Talent wise- these guys are really 1a and 1b with taking your pick on who gets a and b.

hits like Ronnie Lott
I'm coming around too. Joseph is clearly a first round talent and wouldn't have lasted much longer. I think Neal's selection at 17 shows that it wasn't a reach.

barring a trade down, which we all know is MUCH easier said than done, if you're picking a player according to your BPA board, there is NO difference between picking a player at 1.14 and 2.12 (the pick before our next pick).

People like to say that player A should've gone in the late first or something like that. What the hell does that mean if you don't have a pick in the late 1st?!?! If player A is your BPA, then it doesn't matter if he "should" have gone 20 picks later due to some stupid draft pundit's opinion on their ranking.

^^^ It's a little more complex than that when you factor in trade possibilities. Very possible tho, the inside rumors had Joseph going WAY higher than 2.12. Neal at 17 might be an indication of that. Maybe not, depending on Atlanta's board. Still, even if the Falcons had passed, plenty of late draft day rumors had him going to various teams in the late first. Pittsburgh, Houston, among others.

The minute Neal went three picks later, and Reggie said there were no offers, I was OK with the spot we took him.
