lots of buzz seems to point to Shattenkirk ending up with the Sabres.

I hope the way things ended for him in Washington keeps his price tag down somewhat.

The beautiful part of that deal is just like the Joe Thornton deal you knew it was horrible trade right from the get-go...I never had an issue with dealing Seguin but the return was so embarrassing and it's even worse now...somehow they dealt Seguin and Jumbo Joe and did not get one draft pick back in-return...

I can't figure out why they didn't just eat the cost for another year to get more cap space after the McDavid/Draisaitl contracts kick in.

right now, they take on $1.3MM in dead space for 4 years.

if they waited, they would have had to pay him $4MM this year, and then they could buy him out for $1.33MM over the following two.

that would allow them to save $1.3MM in year 4 but also if he bounced back, there was a chance he could be traded with a year left on his deal and then they'd have no cap hit for years 2 through 4.

they did get 1 good and 1 decent year out of him before he fell off a cliff this year.

Umberger was pretty much useless.

Trading away that Clarkson contract made this more of an option.

No doubt they got good value from him, I'm surprised they did buy him out. The Clarkson point makes sense.

Early predictions are: Chad Johnson to Buffalo, Brian Elliott to Philadelphia, Steve Mason to Winnipeg, Ryan Miller to Anaheim, Antti Niemi to Pittsburgh, Anders Nilsson to Vancouver.

Washington’s set a high price on Philipp Grubauer.

DEFENCEMEN

Two that seem close — if not done — are Trevor Daley (Detroit) and Dan Girardi (Tampa Bay).

The Rangers are determined to be modest, which takes them out of the Kevin Shattenkirk race unless something really changes. Buffalo is believed to be a serious suitor. There was some talk Dallas might try a short-term deal, but not sure where that stands after Marc Methot’s arrival.

It’s been well-reported that Karl Alzner visited Montreal, and it sounds like the Canadiens are serious.

Mentioned earlier this week that both Ottawa and Winnipeg were looking at Dmitry Kulikov. I’d link both teams with Michael Stone, too, because there are “intangible” fits to both cities. But he’s a right shot as opposed to a left one, which is what those teams are looking for.

if he wants to play close to home, maybe Jersey is his best option.

 
Is Dan Girardi total garbage? Sounds like he's pretty much a done deal to come to Tampa and Bolts twitter.....is not excited.

Well, he supposedly refused to waive his NMC for a sign and trade with Tampa for 6 x 7 years, and that's a great contract, team, and place to live. So... way too much probably. 

ETA: He's by far the best D (and overall player) available in this crap class IMO, and someone will be stupid.

I'd like to see what Housley can do with him. If it's much more than 7 X 7 though, I'd probably pass.

Absolutely. IMO, though, the 8 figure cap hit contracts should be reserved for guys who you don't really need to cater to in terms of linemates. And the other reason behind that trade was the fact that they were guaranteed to lose Panarin in two years partly because of the very contract we're discussing.

Sure there was a very high probability that Panarin would leave or be traded but this is 100% due to Hossa not playing this year and possibly never again.

Too old and beat up to be a grinder either. 

He was relatively decent towards the end of the season and playoffs after they limited his games and minutes.

With his contract structure, it seemed like the plan was for him to retire this year all along. Why does losing a 3rd line old winger mean they had to ship out Panarin?

Well there isn't another Top 6 wing that can play in all situations like Hossa has historically and likely would have again this year. Saad can fill that role and it cost them Panarin to do so.

 
CAR trades Eddie Lack, Ryan Murphy and 7th in 2019 to CGY for Keegan Kanzig and 6th in 2019. CAR retains 50 per cent salary on Lack.

 
I don't know who Mike Commodore is, but he says Shattenkirk is going to either NYR or Boston. Pretty sure he is making things up

Well Hossa wasn't going to play forever on a $1MM/yr salary. I think every other player who hits that point of their deal hangs up the skates or heads to Europe.
