2017 Raiders - how's the 2018 draft looking? (4 Viewers)

Would be awesome if they could bring one or more additional Superbowl trophies to Oakland before they leave for the desert.

Will Marshawn still want to play for the Raiders now? I realize he'll be playing in Oakland since the move is a few years away. But he's an Oakland kid, maybe out of spite or anger he's going to say forget it now....

Interesting point, and IMO this could be a good way for the team to smooth things over with the population.  Bring in the fun-loving local guy and focus on celebrating the here-and-now.  We're competitive for the first time in a decade, we bring in the popular local kid, we are focusing on winning a Super Bowl!  Jump on board!  2017 or bust!  AC/DC!  In Reggie We Trust!  Just Win Baby!

What?  Oh yeah, ignore that guy over there with the measuring tape, he's just checking to see what sizes moving crates we're gonna need for the goalposts we're taking with us.

I couldn't care less.

Couple years, and it's road trips to Vegas, pool parties, Palm Place condo, and a Chief game.

Hells yeah

i wonder if the fans in Oakland will still attend the games from now until they move
plenty of fans fly in now from Los Angeles to catch the games, I'm sure the stadium will be packed regardless.

They are going to play in Oakland for the next two years. So, they will be Oakland Raiders for sure. Third year is up in the air right now where they will play. If they have to leave Oakland and play somewhere else (Where? LV does not have an option. The UNLV stadium is a small mess) that is where they will likely shed the Oakland and adopt LV.
I was kidding, the Angels have always been in Anaheim which is orange county but are now the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim :bag:

95.7 local radio for the commute home has been very entertaining so far, crying women :lmao:  but there have been some good points. 1 pm on a Sunday and your on a heater, do you leave and go to the game? Hell no. Their home field advantage is probably shot, comp'd tickets and tourists are gonna negate what we had here in Oakland. The black hole can't just be uprooted and moved :sadbanana:

OK, I'm over this news.

The day the Bank of America news broke, was the day I was sure this was a done deal.  Yesterday was a foregone conclusion.

Draft is in a month, boys!

Malik McDowell looks like a Reggie guy to me.  Body type, versatility along the line.

Highlights

Watch for the Notre Dame highlight, where he rips, bends the edge, and pursues.  And then consider, Michigan State played him at DT, right over the nose, a lot.

Here's a great scouting video.  Not your average YouTube highlight reel.  Looking forward to watching more videos by thig guy.

He reminds me of Muhammad Wilkerson a bit.  Little bit of sudden, angry bull to his penetration.  Comparisons to Chris Jones from last year, who has a similar body type, and similar work ethic/desire questions.  Jones had a very good rookie year for AZ.

What other realistic option was there? Really. Seriously. Oakland? Not based on how the city was dealing with them plus- we just had our first sell out... Ever? It isn't like the Oakland people have been packing it in and we just needed a new place to play.

The league wanted nothing to do with us back in LA and if that meant playing tenant to that jerk off Rams owner then I wouldn't want that anyways.

SD? They couldn't get a deal done for the Chargers. How are we suppose to.

San Antonio? Why? Surely not better than LV.

Whatever other long shots like Sacramento (which would have even harder time than Oakland in selling seats).

This is by far the best option we have. And it makes us more competitive than being in Oakland ever could.

all true.  still hate it.

So would Raider fans rather have the team stay in Oakland and play in the worst stadium in the NFL and watch Carr blossom into an elite QB with the Jets, Mack crush QBs with Dallas, Cooper catching TDs from Mariota? Struggle to get elite free agents? And pick in the top five every draft? Because that's what could happen if Davis doesn't start generating more revenue to pay for these huge contracts coming up. It's a shame they can't stay in Oakland where they belong but it wasn't possible with the current state of the economy. Davis is rich but he's not filthy, stinking rich like other owners who can foot the bill to build a stadium. The owners and Las Vegas gave Davis a great deal paving the way for the team to move. Big picture the NFL used Davis as a pawn, they want a presence in Vegas badly. Jones has business ventures in Vegas tied to the new stadium and all the other owners stand to make billions on the relocation. The NFL would love to use their shiny new stadium to host the Super Bowl in 2022, imagine the NFL Draft hosted in Vegas. It would be an extravaganza. A moneymaking ploy for the owners to keep lining their pockets. Blame Davis if you want, he's the perfect scapegoat. He's not a shrewd businessman. Shoot, if someone told me they were moving and I could make millions off of it, I'd drop everything and help them pack too. Judging by the 31-1 vote, it was a no-brainer. The NFL made their statement loud and clear. Screw the fans. It's all about the almighty dollar. And it's always been that way, just ask Cleveland and Baltimore.

Anyone signing up for the psl list to buy season tickets in vegas?  Im considering since I find myself in vegas quite often for business.  Would probably get to at least half the games each year then would suspect it wouldnt be too hard to sell the other games to incoming fans.  Or will this stadium be half full?

I think you are selling Mark short and this does not come across as if they used him as a pawn at all to me.

Ok. He's a bishop or knight on the chessboard. I didn't really mean a pawn in a negative sense. He was smart enough to wait it out for the sweetest relocation deal in history. But in my mind that's where the NFL wants him and the Raiders. Let's face it, he's the new kid in the club. We all know if his father were still alive he would've sued everyone and their mother to get to LA and alienate himself like he did in the past. Mark is smart, he's playing nice with his fellow owners, something his father never did.

This is a great post.  I have been a Raider fan for over 30 years and wish the Oakland Raiders could stay the Oakland Raiders but that is simply not possible any longer.  LV seems like the best option since LA is already taken.  It is time to embrace this move.  Sure, it could be a failure but it could also be the best thing to happen to the team and the fans in years.  My wife and I were talking about the Raiders move to LV last night and she already suggested that we go to Vegas for a  long weekend and game!  She has never suggested that we go to Oakland for a game.

I agree, my wife and I have already talked about it too. My biggest concern is will they have a strong enough local fan base to create home field advantage? Will the Black Hole travel? LV being such a destination city, I see a lot of opposing fans feeling the same way as you and your wife. Let's go to Vegas the weekend the Steelers are playing the Raiders. Possibly diluting home field advantage. Hoping I'm wrong, but it's my biggest fear with this move.

I do want to send out a heartfelt note to all Raiders fans in Oakland. This truly sucks and feels like a bitter dagger in the back for a city that has stuck by this team with fervor and passion for decades. Through thick and more than a lot of thin. Through one relocation already -- the support never wavered.

I don't blame you for feeling rage at the NFL, at Mark Davis, and at the Raider organization. At feeling betrayed and underappreciated and victims of greed, trumping once again the very fans that the NFL will always be built upon. I can appreciate (though never fully feel myself as you can) the soul-punching effect this is going to have not just on the fan base but on the city of Oakland, and that this feeling might not go away soon, if ever.

There will never be a Black Hole in the same way as there was in Oakland. Raider Nation itself was borne by Oakland fans celebrating the return of the team from LA. To Charles Ybarra Jr. (AKA Darth Raider), Mark Shadinger (AKA Spike), (Pablo Navarro (AKA Toozak), Wayne Mabry (AKA Violator), Andrew Crowell (AKA Shieldhead), Ray Perea (AKA Dr. Death), Mark Acasio (AKA Gorilla Rilla), and all the local fans (famous for their dress gear or not). You are the source of Poise and Pride and the Commitment to Excellence, that have made the Raiders a timeless and historic franchise across all professional sports.

I have heard a lot from local fans about simply not being Raiders fans anymore because of what they feel is a slap in the face to the city of Oakland. While I don't feel this way, it's only because I never lived in Oakland, and can never understand what you are feeling and going through. I hope you stay, Raider Nation needs you -- Raider Nation IS you, and arguably will not be as successful without you. All I ask is that you stay part of the faithful while they are still in Oakland. The team clearly is connected to the fanbase, and have a bright future in the immediate years while they are still in town.

Regardless of the future, let's put energy behind the team winning a Superbowl for the City of Oakland in the next two years. Just Win Baby.

Your concern is legit. Of course opposing teams are going to travel more to Vegas than they did to Oakland. However, Raider fans have proven for decades that they are die hards. The Raiders were bad to embarrassing for almost 15 years but most fans hung in there.  Seems likely the Raider Nation will grow in LV and the CA fans will travel to see their team in a great facility at a fun city.

Just an addition. Not to say that Raiders fans outside of Oakland didn't stick with the team, but one of the allure the Raiders had for the city of Oakland is that like Oakland, they were perennial underdogs, and built a lot of pride out of being overlooked and underestimated. Like the team, Oakland has a historical blue-collar lunch-pail never say die ethic, and there is no question the spirit of the Raiders drew heavily from the spirit of Oakland.

This is another chapter in our team history. No one knows how it will go, but I do have hope that the "Once a Raider, Always a Raider" ethos persists -- for fans in and out of Oakland.

this whole Zach Brown this is like watching paint dry...but he`s slowly going to the Raiders thru process of elimination it seems

The Palm Beach Post reports the Dolphins are doubtful to sign free agent LB Zach Brown.

It leaves the Raiders as his most likely landing spot. Brown has been holding out for more money, but it sounds like he's going to have to settle for a reduced deal.

Is there any talk at all about the City of Oakland keeping the Raiders name and history, as the Browns did when Modell left Cleveland for Baltimore ?

Oakland has no rights over Davis on "Raiders". The NFL knew it would put a team back in Cleveland the moment Modell moved.

I believe it was agreed before the move was even approved that the Browns name would remain with the new franchise.

oh well. he signed with Washington...

who else is out there in free agency on defense that's worth a signing? Feels like we're going to do nothing else til after the draft. (based on no info, facts or data at all ;) )

ps. looking at lists of "best remaining free agents" and I seeing Jonathan Hankins DT on the list.

I know nothing about him. I know we have a definite need at DT so I'm wondering if I need to write another "Dear Reggie..." post to try to send positive vibes to get this guy signed.

Anyone hear JT the Brick interview Mark Davis on 95.7 The Game?

I missed it and was wondering what the high points were.

Though, with JT the Brick, there probably weren't many ;)

And I don't expect much to come from an interview with a broadcaster that the team employs talking to the owner of a team that needs to walk on egg shells as his team shuffles out of town in the next few year.

Anyone hear it and can report back?

Here is a link to the interview. At the bottom of the page is the full audio interview.

thanks. topics and answers as expected.

for any other folks in the Bay Area, I heard JT the Brick interviewing George Atkinson today and JT asked such hard hitting and provocative questions like:

JT: "Do you think that the Raiders need to come out of this year's draft with a good mix of quality starters and backups?"

thankfully I pulled into my work's parking garage and didn't hear George's insightful reply into that genius question.

Oy. Sports radio stinks.

It sure does look that way. Pretty manageable outlay for an LB who could at least be a hole plugger/depth, and with good upside.

I get that Reggie has been successful with some draft picks over the last few years. What I don't get is why just rely on the draft to address areas of need.

Especially at these prices.  I get that UFA frequently bust and/or aren't the answer.  But 1 year at 4.5 is a pittance to see what the guy can do under our coaches.

Two LB's I would be interested in that are either a free agent or can be had via trade are Gerald Hodges and Michael Kendricks. I think Kendricks can be had for a late draft pick.

To paraphrase John Madden, if something doesn't make sense, follow the money. Maybe they are holding off spending money until they get Carr's contract done. They also have Jackson and Mack to get done next year. It is the only thing that makes sense to me at this point.

I think it came down to a question of Zach Brown or Gabe Jackson in Reggie's mind and he chose Gabe. I guess I can live with that, but we'll see how it goes.

Speaking of which, now that the move to LV is put to bed, not sure why the front office wouldn't just pull the trigger and pay Carr a Luck-type contract right now. Why wait?

Perhaps. But we have over $32M in cap space, fifth most in the league, with a year still to manage that cap against Mack's contract in 2018.

I think we could have afforded them both.

When you mentioned Luck I got curious about his contract. What I found—

Andrew Luck signed a 5 year, $122,970,000 contract with the Indianapolis Colts, including a $32,000,000 signing bonus, $87,000,000 guaranteed.

Maybe the Raiders are cap rich, money poor requiring them to burn a lot of their available money on Carr's signing bonus.  I am no capoligist, I just play one on the internet.  :D

NFL Draft Needs: Raiders

Tuesday, April 04, 2017

Evan Silva (@EvanSilva) is the Senior Football Editor for Rotoworld's NFL Page, and Josh Norris (@JoshNorris) leads Rotoworld's college football and NFL draft coverage. Together, they're breaking down every team's biggest needs and offering potential draft-day solutions.

Raiders No. 1 Team Need: Linebacker

Silva’s Analysis

It wouldn’t be overkill for the Raiders to address the second level of their defense with multiple additions. Talented on the edges, Jack Del Rio’s unit could take a big step forward by adding a dynamic three-down presence in the middle of the field. Assuming Oakland stays in a 3-4 defense as it played down the stretch, Ben Heeney, Cory James and Dolphins castoff Jelani Jenkins would be vying for two inside linebacker jobs if the season began today.

Raiders No. 2 Team Need: Running Back

Silva’s Analysis

DeAndre Washington and Jalen Richard both flashed playmaking ability as rookies, but they best project as role-player change-up backs. Lead runner Latavius Murray walked in free agency. The Raiders were reported to have interest in DeMarco Murray two offseasons ago and Matt Forte last year. They also reportedly wanted Ezekiel Elliott in the draft, but he went long before their No. 14 pick. At the NFL Owners Meetings, GM Reggie McKenzie expressed interest in adding “a banger, a bigger body” to the backfield.

Raiders No. 3 Team Need: Pass Rusher

Silva’s Analysis

Last year’s Raiders finished dead last in sacks (25) and 30th in Football Outsiders’ Adjusted Sack Rate. While Khalil Mack has developed into a dominant force and Bruce Irvin is a solid complement with plus versatility, Oakland’s defense needs more ways to affect enemy quarterbacks. The Raiders have very little depth behind Mack and Irvin on the edges, and their interior line offered minimal pass-rush assistance last year.

Other Considerations: Slot Corner/Safety Depth, Offensive Tackle, Slot Receiver

2017 NFL Draft: More coverage here

Norris’ Mock Draft

Round 1 (24): CB Chidobe Awuzie, Colorado - Reggie McKenzie loved D.J. Hayden, but had to admit that mistake. It didn't work out. I could see McKenzie viewing Awuzie in a similar light, but actually worthy of a first-round pick. Awuzie offers slot experience, a trait that is difficult to find in higher-end college prospects.

Round 2 (56): LB Jarrad Davis, Florida - The Raiders prioritize athleticism at linebacker, with Heeney, Jenkins, and 2015 free agent signing Malcolm Smith fitting that mold. Davis is definitely a plus athlete. Davis dealt with an injury for a good portion of 2016, but he might be this year's Deion Jones.

Round 3 (88): RB D’Onta Foreman, Texas - The Raiders let Latavius Murray walk in free agency and added nothing to the roster. Foreman is an outstanding fit behind Oakland's lane-clearing offensive line, as he offers tremendous athleticism and big-play ability for a 235-pound back. Let him run through and away from those lanes.

Round 4 (129): EDGE Joe Mathis, Washington - Mathis certainly has his fans in the draft media. Pass rushers are difficult to come by on the third day, but Mathis could be available due to a foot injury.

Round 5 (168): LB Jayon Brown, UCLA - Brown flew under the radar on the all-star circuit, but he’s another linebacker with range.

Round 6 (208): DL Josh Tupou, Colorado - A massive body to help on the interior. True nose tackles are difficult to come by in this class.

Round 7 (242): WR Fred Ross, Miss State - A productive slot receiver.

Round 7 (244): OT Dan Skipper, Arkansas - Skipper is a massive man who will likely land on a practice squad.
