2017 Raiders - how's the 2018 draft looking? (1 Viewer)

After what Raiders ownership is doing to their loyal fans, I don’t think they deserve a player of Johnson’s caliber.

Yes how dare they allow upper management to fix our glaring salary cap hell, get rid of bad players on worse contracts, make successful signings in Free Agency while minimizing long term risk exposure and make a bunch of good to great draft picks in THREE consecutive years????

Oh and don't even get me started on this crap about wanting to play in a modern stadium!!!  To think they expect plumbing to work, parking to be available, and the team actually see some REVENUE from the damn place.  Who do these people think they are?  What, do they expect that they are actually entitled to try to stay COMPETITIVE in today's NFL????

/shakes fist like an 85 year old man.

98% of the blame for the Raiders leaving Oakland is on the city of Oakland leadership. If the fans are going to be angry at anyone, they should focus there. Time to move on though... Literally and figuratively. Viva Los Raiders.

Bumping for no page 4.  Vets report tomorrow.  Conley hasn't signed his deal (offset money?).  RT is a key spot for us.  Who's playing ILB (and how good will they be?)?

I should be attending my 1st ever Raiders game, Vs Jets, this year. Any tips/hints/reccomendations on how to make the most of it. It will probably be a looooooooooong time before i get to see another raider game. Unless they start playing in Japan or Australia

Austin Howard released.

Austin Howard - T - Free Agent

Raiders released G/T Austin Howard.

This locks in Marshall Newhouse as the Raiders' starting right tackle, making him easily the weakest link on this elite line. Howard, 30, made it through three years of a five-year, $30 million deal and started 39-of-40 games he appeared in for the Silver and Black. He's recovering from offseason shoulder surgery but should be at or near 100 percent. Expect OL-needy teams to give him a call.

I don't get that.  Unless there's more to the story this seems counter-productive.  He may not be any good, but what are they going to replace him with that's better?  Is there a rookie or developmental guy they like that this opens a spot for?  There may be a cap savings involved but screw the cap right now, we're (finally) trying to win football games.  You gotta spend to win.  Unless they can improve the team talent this is a bad move.

I think you're probably right. Alexander and Kirkland saw lots of playing time last year. They must be banking on one of them growing into the position. Or they really like what Newhouse brings to the table. But from what I've read about him, he's never been able to lock down a starting position with his previous teams. So I guess we see how it plays out. My gut tells me Alexander will be the starting RT week one.

Donald Penn not reporting.

I see this as a vet skipping camp. Doubt it's a problem.
Not so sure we shall see.  He's only scheduled to make $5.8 mil this year.  Maybe they give him a 2 year deal with a little raise.  Wonder if they knew he wasn't going to report before they cut Howard.

I haven’t talked to Penn today, but @WillieMcGinest has. He said Penn “wants to be paid in the top 10. He’s not looking to be the top paid.”

More McGinest: “(Penn) just wants the respect for what he’s done on the field. Stop looking at his age, look at his production” @nflnetwork

Not surprising, he'd count against the 90 if not and they probably want to buy them time to see what the grand jury does next week.

Sorry for no link but I just caught word on NFL Network that the Grand jury declined the charges against Conley and has been cleared of all charges.

Great on 2 cases. Our No. 1 pick should be on the field soon, could he be the steal of the draft?, And Raiders investigator crew get props as well for coming through with the goods.

Page 4 bump.

Sure would like to hear that Penn showed up to camp.  Loved reading about Lee Smith and his comments on wanting to stay a Raider.  I'm encouraged about the reports of Karl Joseph being at the top of his game.  And couldn't be happier with the Conley situation being cleared up to all him a full camp without a distractions.  Here's hoping he pushes Smith to be the CB we thought we signed.

Posted yesterday, day four highlights for the RBs. Nothing big, but Parmalee and Jalen Richard (I'm almost positive) were singing Marshawn's praises, talking about his contributions as a mentor, in the classroom, and in the locker room.

Regardless of his contributions on the field, and in the fantasy football world, I feel like Marshawn has been a boon for this organization. There's something to be said about bringing in a player that has had the level of success Marshawn has had, even if he might be past his prime. Since our RB core is pretty young, I think the experience and insight Marshawn can provide them will only continue to pay dividends in their careers, hopefully in the silver and black.

With the start of football just around the corner, I think Bart Scott (formerly of the Jets) can sum up my feelings on the subject quite well quite well:

It's early but it's been a quiet camp so far, which is probably a good thing.

The Penn situation might drag out longer than we think if we're reading between the lines of Reggie's recent comments. To me, it sounded like he was digging his heels in the sand a bit.

Sounds like rookie Marquel Lee will be given every opportunity to win the starting MLB spot.

I want to know how they plan to use Obi. He's one I'm obviously going to be following closely in camp. Reggie has invested a lot of high draft picks in the secondary the past two years. Plus Smith, Nelson and Amerson have a year playing together under their belt, if this unit stays healthy I'm expecting major improvement this year and years to come.

I hope last year's rookies in the front 7 make a huge leap this year as well. Calhoun and Cowser flashed at times last season and Ward started all 16 games last year I believe. In my mind, for this defense to improve these three guys need to show a lot of growth.

Edwards and Autry need to get back to pre-injury form. If these two can push the pocket like we know they can, Mack and Irvin will be collapsing the edges to crush the QBs.

I agree with what a poster said earlier in this thread; the Penn situation feels like an established vet just taking the early portion of TC off.  My guess is he will sign shortly after the hardcore practice part of TC is over.

I hope you both are right. I just got the feeling Reggie wasn't ready to pull out the checkbook just yet, but what do I know?

I think this holdout is real.  He has been really good for three years and has been underpaid as far as really good tackles go.  He is scheduled to make $5.8 million this year which is below market for good tackles and he just saw another guy on the same line get paid this offseason.  He is the fourth highest paid guy on his own line and might be the most important.  Also, there is nothing for him to sign, he is under contract already and getting fined for each day he misses.

I think Vanderdoes will get a lot of play on the interior line this season. He has looked good up to this point and Edwards had a lot of praise for him yesterday.

I agree that he deserves more money and he believes that, the timing of the hold out gives him maximum leverage because he knows how much the Raiders want to protect their shiny young stud QB.  The fine ($40k/day?) is the only leverage the team has and that always (always) gets thrown out when the player reports.

I think this resolves very shortly after they break camp, when all the heavy lifting is over, with Penn getting some kind of extension that keeps his cap hat similar to where it is now but gives a substantial, and fair, up front signing bonus (or something like that).  Penn has said publicly that he doesn't want to be the highest paid LT but he wants to be in the top 10 and I think it will not be a problem to satisfy both Penn and the team under those parameters.

More power to him, I believe he deserves a raise. When the Raiders originally signed him, it was thought he was on the downside of his career. He's been a nice surprise for the team and everyone seems to love him. My only concern is, how many times have we seen in the past, when a player holds out and misses camp, he comes back and gets injured. God forbid that happens, but it's a concern, especially for an older player.

I really think we got a steal here with Vanderdoes. He was a 5 star recruit and did well early in college. He had injury issues and was slow to come back from it plus got out of shape. Now, look up pretty much anything from the Senior Bowl and it was all about how he was dominating.

I am very optimistic that he will be that inside presence that can collapse the pocket that we sorely missed last season. Just think how much better our edge guys will be if an offense has to seriously worry about the inside of their line falling into their QB's lap? Second only to not being able to cover any TE- I felt that the biggest thing we needed to do as a D to really make a difference was that interior line and I really feel Vanderdoes will surprise many.

Add in my high expectations for Vanderdoes to a healthy Edwards? That could be making me smile all season long.

Injuries happen. But I am less worried about it for a vet like Penn who hasn't missed a game in 10 years and knows exactly what to expect on opening day.

Depth chart

Looks like they're going with the 5th round draft pick Lee in the middle and sliding James over to the weak side.

Eddie V doing well and news on the starting tackles this Saturday.

Eddie Vanderdoes performing in Raiders camp like he’s a draft steal

I'm telling you my Nation.... everything says this guy is going to be a difference maker on the inside. Add in a healthy Mario. And what we already know we have on the edge with Mack and Irvin. I am getting excited for this D.

Just think of the steal of Conley. Hopefully Obi is as good as Mac likes him and then Vanderdoes. This could mean a good (and young) D is in the making to go with our offense.

I loved the Vanderdoes pick when it was made. Much of his last season he was still recovering from his injury. During the workout process of the draft he finally started to look like his old self and losing weight.

This highlights a concern that we have been glossing over: the Raiders really lack depth at many positions. In particular: Tackle, WR, LB and DE.

There is a serious drop off in talent if a key player gets hurt. Honestly, I am tempering my expectations given the lack of depth and their SOS.
