2018 Mid-Year Song Draft - Round 9 this AM, Round 10/all owed picks this afternoon. (5 Viewers)

I missed the first week but enjoyed the draft.  I didn't give out as many likes as usual because a bunch of picks were unfamiliar to me but I'm really enjoying the playlist so far after an hour or so of semi-interrupted listening.

Thanks to NV for the dream and to everyone else for the reality.

This morning I've really liked the Harley Poe, Gold Class, Liars and Ghostpoet songs, among stuff I'm not super familiar.

(that post was stuck in my editor).

Damnit

of course I finish my picks the day before song of the year gets released. :hot:

16th round anyone?

(A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds)

I am on song 95 out of (what is currently) 175 on the playlist... I've got a way to go yet - lol.

listening to my spotify release radar now... the poor spotify algorithm gets royally screwed by kids' listening habits, but I'm going to guess that your soty pick is the new demi lovato bomb.

eta: hfs... I take that back- it must be the embarrassingly bad "what's going on" cover by U2.

eta2: or... jarvis cocker has been a busy boy- collaborated with my guy chilly gonzalez on a strange but interesting album Room 29 early in the year and just dropped a decent single with Iggy.

Your notebook is woefully incorrect.

"Do you know who the *** I am?"

nope. was it the new taylor swift?

Final selections from me and thanks to @northern exposure for putting this one on the turntable for us to enjoy.

Round 13 - Kaleo (Iceland) - No Good

First time I am drafting a band from Scandinavia.  Saw them this year and enjoyed the show.  Yes, this is a 2016 release, so I will replace if we think it’s too far removed from 2017.

Round 14 - U2 (Ireland) - The Blackout

My favorite song from their latest.  If you want to listen to the whole album, you’ll have to search it out because Apple did not put it automatically in your iTunes this time.

Round 15 - Jason Isbell and The 400 Unit - Hope the High Road

Said I would not double dip on an album or tune this into a political sword fight.  Was hoping someone else would select this one, but it’s such a rocking tune that we would be remiss to have a 2017 playlist without it represented.

My near misses/songs I didn't take for not doubling/tripling down too much on the same artists

  • Lorde - 'The Louvre'
  • LCD Soundsystem - 'Tonight'
  • Japandroids - 'Arc of Bar'
  • Carly Rae Jepsen - 'Cut to the Feeling'
  • Portugal The Man - 'Rich Friends'
  • The New Pornographers - 'Avalanche Alley'
  • Father John Misty - 'Pure Comedy'
  • Glass Animals - 'Agnes'
  • The Menzingers - 'Lookers'
  • Arkells - 'Knocking at the Door'
  • Queens of the Stone Age - 'Fortress' / 'The Evil has Landed'
  • Spoon - 'I Ain't the One'
  • Phoenix - 'Telefono' / 'J-Boy'
  • The National - 'I'll Still Destroy You'

Songs that other people picked that are definitely in my top 20 for the year (before listening to all this new stuff): 'Total Entertainment Forever', 'Glitter' (all the people who said this was the wrong Charly Bliss song are nuts), 'Tinseltown Swimming in Blood', 'Dreams Tonite', 'No Known Drink or Drug'.

Anyway, I plan on shuffling through the playlist we've made here over the next week or so - thanks everyone for participating and picking up the slack when I was busy for a couple days there. I think for this type of year end draft the format of popping in with a pick or two every day worked perfectly and I'll probably do this as an ongoing thing before the annual album poll.

I'll fire up the Album Poll on Monday and realistically with Christmas breaks getting started here soon, probably shoot for the 2nd week of January or so to have the final results/countdown day.

In the meantime, no reason we can't keep this thread going with other great songs from the year

Call Ticketron off of RTJ3 came out today or yesterday with a video. (I hardly think I'm spotlighting.) Probably my song of the year, even though it dropped Xmas last year. It's interesting, if you call the phone number the broadcasters show on the interview you get audio clips of them. I wonder if there's a game involved. Anyone privy?

Pretty sure it was just some hype material for the video. They released some clips with the phone number on Wednesday to tease the video release.

Great song and video, BTW.

Yeah, my friend just told me that. I just called the number from the video for licks and giggles. Figured maybe it might be something, but if they promo'd it, it's prolly just a pre-recorded stunt.

It is a great song and video, too.

Really enjoyed the song draft and listening to the collective FBG playlist so far.  Definitely discovering some great stuff that I missed this year thanks to you guys.

Anyone else get their Spotify Wrapped breakdown for 2017?  Here are my stats for the year.

I probably listened to 65%rap, 25% indie rock, and 10% folk/bluegrass this year.

I posted mine in the albums thread earlier:  https://imgur.com/9PTINAM

Gonna go a little metal-y, but nothing too bad.  This album will also be at the top of my list for best of the year.  Almost anything they do is gold and IMO it was their best album in a decade.  The video cracks me up, too.

Round 11:

Mastodon - Show Yourself

LINK

You're not as safe as far as I can tell
And I can tell
Only you can save yourself
Soon this will all be a distant memory
Even though I dismissed this one based on it being Mastadon, I really liked this one!

On a side note, I haven't had any for months, but tonight I had a few gins while wrapping presents and by the end I was triple checking I had the right names on stuff and the right fillings in stockings.  Took a bit longer than it probably should have, but it gave me a chance to listen to more of the playlist. (And drink more booze)

Merry Christmas, music :nerd: s!

Damn. I had few too many gins last night. :hangover:

Merry Christmas!

Major thanks to the drafters here. I really dug into this stuff and I have a few comments:

LCD Soundsystem is still a thing.

St. Vincent continues to be a modern Prince.

Blood Command and These New Sound Whales are cool

"Weekends forever!!!!"

oh and Kills
