Celtics are still a top 4 team in the East without JB. Smart will be coming back soon and the rest of their top 8 guys are healthy.

On a side note, I am halfway expecting a Pritchard for Olynyk trade today (not sure how the $$ works on that).
Nevermind...way too far apart on salaries for that to work.
 
Nets shouldn’t be done dealing. Everyone wants two-way wings and that’s all the Nets have right now. Plenty of good targets for contenders.

I doubt they're done but it's an interesting bind with the rebuild. Tanking really only helps Houston.

update - Indiana is taking on a contract so Nets "only" getting 3 2d rd picks in the deal.

I said this before, but that's not totally true for this year. Houston will surely have worse pick than Brooklyn no matter what this year and this year is a swap. So Brooklyn could get in position for a top 10 pick and still keep it. Or at worst get Houston's pick which would still be good. After this year, Houston isn't as assured of being terrible and also owes their own pick to OKC so they won't have much incentive to tank.

Yeah that's what I'm thinking. In a post-super team league that's reverted back into power duos (thank god btw), having 3 guys who can drop 30+ any given night, with a HoF'er in Paul directing them, that gives you a sizeable advantage against just about everybody.

Like you said, the only gamble is health down the stretch. But if they can manage that, and assuming GS doesn't suddenly find their mojo at the end of the season, the Sun's would certainly seem the clear favorite in the West IMO.

Those about the only consistently contributing players from the second round in the last 5 years. A few other guys chipped in at times, but haven't been regular contributors. 2018 seemed like a banner year for 2nd rounders and it still equates to about a 12% success rate over the last 5 years. Jury is still out on the 2022 guys, but not a lot to write home about yet.

So basically out of 5 2nd round picks, you have a 50/50 chance of landing a starter or key bench player.

Well, that is the backup post player move I was expecting. Guess they are more or less with content with Luke Kornet's contributions.

Feel kind of bad for Payton Pritchard. Guy just can't find minutes on this team and could be a good backup PG/SG to run a 2nd unit on most teams. His minutes and PPG have actually dropped each of his last two seasons from a peak during his rookie year.

  • Saddiq Bey? A Bones-Bey trade seems reasonably fair straight up. Bones fills a shooting/guard need for Detroit, and Bey is a theoretical 3-D wing (big enough, a decent defender, a decent shooter).
  • Kenrich Williams, Nassir Little, the Martin twins, Naji Marshall, Gary Payton, and Kenyon Martin Jr are all guys they'll look at but they are either too old to make too much sense, not good enough defenders, or not good enough shooters.
I think they should hold on to Bones unless they can get somebody better than the above and hope somebody like Eric Gordon gets bought out and wants to come.

Not sure if they could give Charlotte enough, but Jalen McDaniels' salary would match. I guess that 23 second would be pretty good and maybe lighten the protections on the first they owe Charlotte.

Also, can they trade 25 and 26 seconds since they are the conditional picks for the protected first now owed to Charlotte? Don't hear much about encumbered 2nds, but not sure how it works.

The Nuggets have traded their 25, 26 and 29 2nds plus Davone Reed to the Lakers for Thomas Bryant. Not a bad move, but those 25 and 26 seconds should be encumbered as conditional picks (I even disgustingly posed that question on the NBA strategy stream with Duncan/Leroux and they confirmed). So I wonder if they had to change the protection on the 1st or something or maybe the 2nds are somehow conditional to the Lakers as well.

Secondly, Charlotte is getting 3 seconds to part with Jalen McDaniels. Seems like he would have been a much better target for Denver than Bryant and got a similar return. Maybe the 2nds Charlotte is getting are that much more attractive (combination of PHI and POR) but seems like the Nuggets still could have made it happen.

edit: picks to CHA are a 2029 POR and 2024 NYK

Regarding the Bryant pickup - I wonder if that was done with the expectation that they are also going to aggregate some of their bench guys. They could pull Ish Smith, Jeff Green, Bones Hyland, and Zeke Nnaji into a trade and get up to like $15m or something of salary back. Buuuuut they don't have much draft capital to trade to sweeten the deal. If they could trade that package to get DFS, I would be pretty pumped.
 
New reporting, because I know everyone really cares, but CHA is getting a 2029 POR 2nd and a 2024 NYK FIRST. Now I understand why Denver couldn't compete with that offer.

Nets got Irving as as street free agent. Anything they got in trade for him was technically gravy. I recognize his controversy off the court actively hurt the team as well. So that's a consideration. But from a raw asset management standpoint, they traded what was open cap space for Finney Smith, Dinwiddie and a pick. That's a net positive from a resource management perspective.

Durant was a sign and trade so NJ could get his full Bird Rights from Golden State ( the Nets wasted that extra cap leverage by signing DeAndre Jordan, but that's another story) So it cost D'Angelo Russell to get Durant. To get DLo, the Nets gave up Brooks Lopez ( not the same player he is now, he's actually more valuable now than then, which is a little strange) and the draft pick that turned into Kyle Kuzma.

Flipping Lopez and Kuzma for the Bridges, Johnson, the five 2nd rounders from the Crowder deal, plus 4 unprotected firsts and a swap, plus the value of having Durant on your roster for a while, that's also a net positive.

James Harden is more complicated. The Nets gave up a lot of picks and swaps to Houston. They got a few picks back with Ben Simmons. All those picks are a lot of moving parts. At minimum, to start, it cost them Tari Eason, who is a damn good prospect. I can't call this a net positive, time will tell how these deals around Harden shake out. Simmons might end up doing better with Bridges and Finney Smith and turning NJ into a defensive oriented team. What matters most of Simmons needs to prove he can consistently defend the rim. If he can do that, he's a small ball 5 who is a point center. It's not ideal, but at least he doesn't force a 3 on 5 on offense when you add in a rim protector next to him.

If Houston ends up with nothing from those picks moving forward, and NJ makes the most out of the picks they did get, the Nets did OK. Not great, but OK.
 
the bucks got lucky with malcom in the middle brodgon one time in the second round otherwise the recent history is pretty forgettable so i get it just give those picks away because why not and i have to say it i hated chowder with the suns but i will probably like him again with the bucks when he flops up through a playoff win take that to the bank bromigos

It's a ridiculous assertion.

The year Tracy McGrady and Grant Hill were free agents ( and some thought Tim Duncan would join them in the open market), the Bulls carved out a lot of cap space to chase them. When the Bulls struck out, like most other teams, they ended up overpaying Ron Mercer. No one else wanted to sign there then.

Now if the Bulls had the Warriors situation several years back, with Steph Curry, Klay Thompson and Draymond Green, all drafted and with their full Bird Rights, much younger, already won a ring, a a good coach in Kerr and the fortunate timing of a big boost to the cap, do you think Durant would say No to that? Put that situation on any team in the league. Atlanta. Toronto. Denver. Sacramento even.

If you can win and win big and you can offer a max contract, a player will sign there.

The Warriors, as they used to be, could only sign washed up Derek Fisher to a massively overpaid contract as a free agent. Then later, Corey Maggette. No one wanted to sign with Golden State when they were in their post Nellie Ball funk. Where they just kept losing no matter what. And didn't have a real star player.

Give the Cavs players like Luka Doncic and Jokic and max cap space, and do you think people will care that Dan Gilbert and LBJ feuded? LBJ RESIGNED in Cleveland after saying no big FA would sign with the Cavs ever again.

Chris Webber said he hated Don Nelson forever. Then in one of his last seasons, when he was limping around, he went to the Warriors during Don Nelson's 2nd Golden State run. Because no other team really wanted to bother.

I like it for Milwaukee (not so much for Boston). He hasn't played yet this year, so will bring a LOT of energy to the court.

Not sure if they plan to start him or not, but he is a 10pt/5rb guy either as a starter or big minutes off the bench who will play tough defense.

Bucks already scared me more than the Sixers and this just makes them better.

Where are the 2nd round picks located?

The first five picks in any 2nd round are actually pretty valuable. If the draft is deep enough, even the first 10 picks can be more than viable.

2nd rounders are not required to get any guaranteed money at all. Teams usually give them some guaranteed money, but it's not like the "slotting" for a late first round draft pick. That's two years minimum of guaranteed money, and rarely does a team refuse to pick up the 3rd and 4th year options on said player. For a team in the tax zone or repeater tax zone, that's a huge deal. The RSE slotting is a cap exception, so teams can sign their draftees, but it's not a tax exemption as well.

In situation like Chandler Parsons and the Rockets, it would have been better for Houston as a franchise, had he been a late first round pick instead of a 2nd round pick. ( I'm talking early career Parson where he was a big value, not the late career one where he was a total mess) Same for the Warriors and Gilbert Arenas.

However do you want to be the team paying Dylan Windler guaranteed money if you don't have to do it?

DeRozan is IMO the #1 no brainer to sell. And I've not heard any rumors.

This is a below .500 team since Lonzo Ball went down. And obviously that's a huge sample size (>100 games) with Ball having missed over a year now. And there's no return in sight for Lonzo. They still don't even know what's wrong with him after a year and over a handful of docs looking at him. Wouldn't be surprised if his career is all but done.

I'd part with him and see what's there in expanded roles for Williams/Ayo/Dalen Terry

I was a Doc Rivers defender, but that has gotten difficult.
 
Regarding the Celtics-76ers game and Blake Griffin:

“Us,” said James Harden when asked what went wrong on defense. “Blake Griffin hit three 3s, I think, in the beginning. He hit like five or six threes like no disrespect, but that can’t happen. That’s 15 points, 18 points that we’re giving up that it’s difficult to get back from. I think we did a solid job on JT. It can’t happen.”

Overall, Griffin shot 5-for-8 from deep and seven were wide-open looks. When asked if he felt disrespected that the Sixers were leaving him open, the veteran didn’t feel that way, but he was confused by Philadelphia’s lack of adjustments.


“I don’t really take it as disrespect,” said Griffin. “It hurt them. That was their game plan. Obviously, Doc (Rivers) makes that game plan. They didn’t adjust, which has been sort of a thing. No disrespect though.”
 
Warriors get a bunch of 2nds for Wiseman.

An all-time blunder by them. Melo would have extended both Steph and Klays careers. Just never ever made sense.

Disagree. If they draft Ball then last year never happens in my opinion. The Wiggins trade might not happen and if it does I doubt Wiggins reinvents himself the way he has. I doubt Poole develops into the player he is and if he does it doesn't happen in Golden State and even if I am wrong everything goes exactly the same and you just drop LaMelo on the Warriors they can't sign everyone. Wiggins and or Poole or Klay are gone.
