I wonder how much longer he'll be in the league. He cant even get much playing time on the depleted Nets squad.

He took himself out of the game the other day because of a knee.....I mean it bent backwards in the playoffs 2 years ago and he dropped a 50 burger to clinch. What more do you want from him?

Can’t believe the Lakers got that win today with how horrible they started. Davis was a beast and Vanderbilt was awesome in the comeback. Huge win for them.

Feels pretty tank-ish to me. With Orlando playing well bottom 5 is still a possibility, I think those odds are too enticing to not at least consider. Having said that they won’t do anything unless SGA is on board, and I think he wants to make all-NBA so I don’t see them getting silly with it. Ultimately this year has been a success for the Thunder regardless of what happens these last 20 games.

Mavs game today was crazy. I'm officially on the bandwagon of "Kidd is not a good coach." chalking up last year to simply having a different voice reinvigorating things.

  • Officiating was kind of terrible. Multiple blown calls, and in spite of relatively even driving figures, a huge FT disparity from end of Q1 until the waning minutes of Q4
  • Team got up like 25 and decided the game was over and all was good...and LA steadily just chipped away from Q2 through their win
  • Rotations were garbage. Powell got annihilated by Davis for a full 20 minutes and Kidd never tried any other strategies
  • I don't remember the last time Kidd got a T for anything - I worked with Popp for a while (after I spent a few seasons at a P5 school) and if the game was going this poorly after a big lead and the disparity was that big, and his team looked listless...he'd have gotten one or maybe a double and trusted it to get everyone's head on straight while he was in the locker room
  • It's ridiculous that they never go small with this team. Luka-Irving-Green-Hardaway-Wood (or swap Hardaway for Bullock) should absolutely boatrace opponents even with defensive issues
  • Green picked up 3 in the first half, and did get a 4th at some point, but still played way too few minutes. He's the pace and energy for this team he needs to be deployed appropriately
  • Luka loses his head too much and plays to officials. 3 TOs today purely from trying to sell a call instead of just making the play on the damn ball. Ridiculous. A coach that was good would have stopped that **** by now.

Not sure if it’s the play-in, the crazy parity right now, or both, but there have been so many great games this past week. It’s awesome.

These last ~20 games are going to be crazy, especially in the west where there is only a difference of 3 losses between the 4th and 13th seeds.

I was at the game last night. A few observations:
  • Westbrook looked very good offensively. He is the only guy on the Clippers that pushed the ball at all, so he very well may have some utility on the team. The Nuggets were daring him to shoot and he wasn't shy and made a least 2-3 jumpers. Defensively, he ruins everything. He can't defend anybody and he was gambling constantly.
  • Mason Plumlee and Westbrook can't be on the court together. They both can't shoot and they both have an outsized view of their abilities with the ball in their hands. They were so much better with Batum as a small ball 5 and either Mann or Gordon (he kinda sucked, but the Nuggets were guarding him).
  • Kawhi is back. He looked incredible. In the fourth quarter it seemed like he made every contested jumper he took.
  • The fans booed Bones every time he touched the ball for the entirety of the game. Probably not the reception he wanted.
  • The Clippers played small against Jokic for most of the 2nd and 3rd quarters and took turns with George, Leonard, Morris, and Batum guarding him. It seemed to work much better than Plumlee. The Nuggets were having a hell of time getting entry passes into Jokic for whatever reason... until Plumlee came back in.

Lakers and Thunder are 12th & 13th in the conference right now, but 3 games behind in the loss column - for the 4 seed in the west. Crazy tight after the top 3.

It's nuts that a big run, either for good or bad, could take anybody from 4 to 13 from out of the playin to home court, or vice versa. Only one team in the west is better than 6-4 in the last 10 (Denver), and nobody in the top 13 is worse than 4-6. Everybody is waiting for a run from somebody to make a competitive west playoffs but the 4 through 13 might just kinda suck (plus nobody really believes in the Kings at 3).

I feel like we are waiting for Phoenix, LAC and Dallas to emerge but none of them have yet. Durant hasn't played for Phoenix and they just kicked a winnable game. The Clippers have Kawhi playing at his peak with no restrictions but just lost back to back games and Kyrie and Luka aren't clicking and just lost a game they should have won. One or all of those losses may just be a regular season hiccup, but when they are already hovering around .500 with the likes of Utah & Minnesota they seem like fairly average teams.

I don’t think anything after Denver at #1 is really locked in. I expect the Suns to make a big run up to at least #3 and maybe 2 after Durant starts playing. As I noted a couple days ago, the Kings have the potential to free fall with a bad week or two, which is quite plausible given their schedule.
 
Klay playing the best ball he's played in several years. If Steph's back in plenty of time before playoffs, will be hard to bet against them for me.

I'll never get over that it should be/have been Melo-Steph-Klay. CRAZY man. What a treat that would have been.

Saw a doctor tweet that the earliest Steph could return is 2 more weeks, but likely 3-4 weeks. His other point was that the earlier they rush him back, the greater the chance of re-injury. He suggested he take the full month off. He should then be back to normal for the playoffs. I am curious if he does miss another 3-4 weeks and a couple other teams string a few wins together if GS could miss out on the play in tournament. They have gone 4-4 with him out of the lineup (all wins in that stretch against teams with losing records).

If Curry is out for almost another month, Steph would miss some tough games (LAC x 2, MEM x 2, MIL, PHI, PHO, DAL). Depending when he comes back, that could be another 15 games missed. 538 has them going 12-9 the rest of the way. ESPN has them 11-10. That would get them to 42 or 43 wins. Both sites project 41 wins as the number needed to reach the play-in tournament. That's not a lot of wiggle room if Steph misses 3-4 more weeks.

it’s the time off if you ask me. They’ve got to get the regular season slimmed down. We don’t need 82 games to figure out which 2/3rds of the league should make the tournament.

I'm not convinced it's the regular season. I actually think the opposite. It's the playoffs.

2/3 of the league makes the postseason. It doesn't matter if it's 82 games or 54 or whatever other number people throw out there.

If you have a 67% chance of making the playoffs right off the rip, there's never going to be any urgency. As long as your team has even 1 mid-level star with 20 teams making the playoffs, your team will probably get in.

What the NBA needs to do is contract, even beyond the regular 16 that they had been doing. I know the reality is that no league wants to copycat another for risk of showing itself as inferior, but the NBA needs to copy the old NFL playoff formatting.

12 teams, 4 with first round bye. The only problem with this is I feel like basketball is much more a game of being in rhythm, getting your shooting stroke going, etc.....so a week off might really hurt the team with the bye.

Most definitely but I don't see it happening unless ALL teams can make up for that loss of revenue with the alternative.

It’s really not that much different than it was before. Twelve teams make the playoffs and 8 more teams play a few extra games to determine who the other 4 teams in the playoffs will be. Statistics from play in games literally do not even count. It’s just a way to keep more teams engaged to end up with the same number of playoff teams. 16 of 30 teams still make the playoffs.

Giving teams byes makes no sense. They would be so out of whack once they got on the court again in a week or two. Some players might actually start losing their sea legs. Lower seeds might actually have an advantage in the early games.

For fans that paid good money for tickets for late season games, there are now more teams laying hard because they still have a shot. Teams that didn’t have a great chance of getting the 8 seed might have a shot at the 10 seed. I think that’s a good thing, not a bad thing.
 
It really was a great weekend for basketball. Seemed like every game I watched was exciting and two full court buzzer heaves by Embid and George just a half second late. I'm coming off my no 3rd MVP for Jokic stance. He was incredible vs. LAC and seems like the clear choice. Also funny to see the Clippers mount a nice comeback once they benched Westbrook. I dont think he played the 4th or OT.....the Mavs are 1-3 with Irving...and Dame is the best offensive player since Kobe. Watching him kill the Rockets from just about everywhere was a sight to see. Such a beautiful shot. Hope he gets out of Portland before its too late.

Wilt averaged 48.5 minutes in a season once and played in every game. Players today are getting softer and softer. On top of that, no one is forcing teams to play guys so many minutes. Coaches can play someone else for a few minutes. If they don’t win, oh well. Have a better roster instead of just a handful of stars.

Disregarding that, playing to a target score is more entertaining to watch.

Didn't watch, but looks like Tatum really struggled shooting again and got ejected in the 4th after 2 technicals, both for arguing with the officials, and finished the night with 14 pts. Jaylen Brown was out (for personal reasons I believe). Now the Bucks are officially ahead of Boston in Winning %.

Tatum has not been as good in February. So far in 10 games this month he has a net rating of +1.0 and his TS% is lower than any of the previous months and his scoring average is at 25.5 over those 10 games (below his earlier season average of 31.1 in the prior months). I was looking at his game logs and it actually seems like he's been worse, but he had a couple of good games in there vs some weaker opponents. He seems to score poorly against the better teams and the Celtics depth has overcome his struggles for the most part, but they need him to play at an all-NBA level to beat the good teams since he's going to shoot 21 times per game.
