Obviously not the best use of that possession, but Steph wasn't open, he couldn't dribble in closer and get a clean look, he maybe should have used more clock to find someone more open, but I don't think it's freak-out-worthy.

It is the Lakers they have a lot going against them. Plus I am not a LeBron fan. I am also a Pistons fan, so there are about 4 teams that I can never root for and of they play each other I want them to both lose.

Kareem vs. Wilt, an 8+ minute montage of them matched up when Wilt was with the Lakers and Kareem with the Bucks. Some really incredible skill and athleticism that would absolutely translate to today's game. They wouldn't put up the stupid rebounding stats like back then and likely not score quite as much, but their defensive effectiveness and efficiency would be elite with today's coaching and physical training and nutrition.

Because by the time Curry would have gotten the ball back and got a shot off there wouldn't have been much time left on the clock. It ends up being like 50 total shots this year so it is maybe not as statistically relevant as presented, but the year before it was 16.3%, the year before that 21.3%, the year before that he was hurt all by 5 games (but made 1 of 6 of such shots), the year before that 20.5%... you get the point

One of the things that Curry lost a little with age is his ability to get separation in a 1-on-1 situation for a clean look at a three and that wasn't really the peak of his skill set to begin with.

I don’t have a problem with the Poole shot. He’s a dude that can hit from range and was hitting that game. I do think the execution was bad—and I think that there is a chance that both he and Draymond maybe thought a timeout would be called. They were trailing the play by a good margin and were late getting into the front court. That made it so that they were both further away from the basket when Curry had to pass out of the double team. With that said—I think Poole had 2 options when he caught the ball. Either take the wide open 3, or if you are confident that you can get a wide open layup and attack the hoop very quickly—take a quick 2. With the Warriors not electing to take their timeout—and Poole catching the ball with 10 seconds left--there was enough time to take a concession 2, go for a steal and immediately foul—and then call your timeout. The lakers are not a really sharpshooting team from the free throw line. Just my 2 cents.

I think one of the biggest factors in play is that it‘s more acceptable when the stud players on a team take the big shot (regardless of the quality of the shot). I’m in the camp that has no problem with Poole’s shot—but I do think that the execution/spacing on that play was lacking. I think a lot of people would feel a lot more comfortable and would have an easier time justifying Curry or Thompson taking a highly contested 3 from 25-27 feet than Poole missing a wide open 30 footer. I think if Lillard had missed that shot—it still would have been more widely acceptable to a lot of people versus if he would have passed the ball to Simons to shoot an open 27 footer. The stud players get the benefit of the doubt. If they hit it—it reinforces their “greatness”, and if they miss it—they get a pass because “you have to ride or die with your best players”. With guys like Poole—if they hit the shot—they are heroes, if they miss it—it’s a dumb shot and they are idiots.

It was a travel but, contrary to what van gundy claimed, ie he took too many steps, it was a travel because he Yugo-stepped it. He gathered on his right and then hopped to his right again to give himself downhill leverage. Had he hopped onto his left the move would have been completely legal but the balance would have been totally different. It's pretty amazing they catch that at the speed these guys are moving.

I don't think so. If they call time out LA games the foul on the floor. IMO they went three-hunting way too early. They should have attacked the rim for an easy two and then played the foul game. They still had two TO's IIRC so they could have advanced mutiple times.

Yeah, if he hits it (say 30% to make the math easy), LA is still 40% to win on last shot and then 50% to win in OT. The early 3 attempt puts GSW at a roughly 9% to win the game (30% to make * 60% LA miss * 50% OT odds)

Yeah, the rebouding numbers in those days were ridiculous. Mainly because teams were shooting in the low 40's at 120 possessions per game

I stopped drinking Sunday night through stopping work Friday evenings (assuming a normal work week - vacation or golf tournament and that rule is out the window) about a year ago and just haven't been home the last few weekends for a variety of reasons.

Well, the fact that Curry instantly ran directly at Green, and then Steph's exasperated body language immediately after upon not getting the return pass, supports exactly what I am saying.

So if being "wrong" means seeing the game just like Steph Curry, I'm perfectly fine with that.

LA running the same coverage I would have (and actually have) drawn up in the huddle: Stay on Steph, period. It doesn't matter if Green tried to do a handoff, there's a decent chance the actual handoff gets disrupted because, just like all game, I'm ignoring Green's offense completely and trusting Davis to disrupt if he actually gets close enough to the basket to attempt a dangerous pass or shot. Which he especially won't because it's a 3-pt game.

Even if Steph manages to receive the ball in this situation, it's not ending well.

And none of that is to say he can't be frustrated by it anyway. But for you to take his frustration as a sign of anything else is laughable too.

In all cases give the ball to your best player and point guard and he will make decisions that exploit those situations. If Draymond can't get it to him then call timeout and run a set play. Not difficult.

They were playing lock and trail on Steph all game, with multiple defenders playing 1-in-1-out, and add a deep drop if Looney or Green got the ball on the perimeter. I know it may look like chaos to the casual eye but anyone with a semi-trained eye can figure it out. Steph is going to have a long series if they try playing him off the ball. He is going to have to initiate to have any effect on the game and they are going to wear him out in the process.

Plus it was Lillard in his prime as an all pro, playing well and leading his team in the playoffs in a tie game while leading the series.

Not a 6th man, who has played horrible these playoffs, and is probably the 4th best player on his team and the 3rd best shooter.

If somebody feels like a basketball topic is getting too much attention in a basketball thread—I don’t see that as being the “threads“ problem. This forum has the lovely feature where somebody can just use a finger and slide it in an upwards fashion if there is a topic that they don’t care to engage in.

Really? You certainly have an odd way of inviting basketball opinions in a basketball thread.

I wonder if the shot that assassinated JFK got as much scrutiny as the final shot of GAME 1 of a 2nd round series is getting. This is absurd. Move on.

I'm avoiding all Poole-shot talk, but I have to note that Dame's game winner was with a tie game, so worst case scenario was OT.

Why? This is the NBA basketball thread during playoff basketball. This is when we should be the most passionate, have the most dialogue and back and forth. Why should anybody feel compelled to avoid any basketball dialogue this time of the year in this thread? My opinion is that the talk about Poole's missed shot has been beaten to death. It's one missed shot in game one of a seven games series. It happens. But the keystrokes and hot takes about it are a bit much. I stopped drinking Sunday night through stopping work Friday evenings (assuming a normal work week - vacation or golf tournament and that rule is out the window) about a year ago and just haven't been home the last few weekends for a variety of reasons.

But I'm definitely home this weekend!

With four kids, I don't know how you do it. I have to have 2 beers before I even walk in the door.
