So is it fair to say Jokic is the best 2nd round pick in NBA history? Can't believe he didn't go until the 41st pick.
I think he earned that mantle with his first MVP.

Any other guys that either won a MVP award or led their team to a Finals win as the clear cut #1?

Have not jumped on to Twitter yet, but Denver, y'all are out en masse honking horns, right now, right? ... That's what would be happening in SA.

This article mentions some old timers that would have held the title for a while. Before Jokic, Draymond probably would have been considered the best ever.

Well I'm in the suburbs. Not much going on here. But we haven't won anything yet, and given the history of this team few long time Denver peeps will take it for granted. Monday night might be rockin' though. I lived in downtown Denver when they won their first superbowl. And we went bar hopping after the game that night. Now THAT was a party.

I change my vote to Dennis Johnson. I put him ahead of any of those other dudes. Rodman, Cheeks, and Alex English should also get some run. And my personal favorite second rounder, the King of the Fourth!

Great win again for Denver. Another win for them when Jokic is not their leading scorer. Such a complete team with a lot of talent. In regards to Porter jr, I feel like a lot of people in here are too down on him. The dude was one of the better 3 point shooters in the league this season (top 20 percentage wise at 41%—which is really good considering he took close to 7 per game). He also showed a lot of defensive upside through the conference finals. The dude is a shooter—and shooters will have slumps and streaks. Let’s not act like he’s garbage after a few bad games.

On the Heat side of things—I feel like they need to do something about Strus and Vincent. I almost wonder if they need to experiment with bringing them off off the bench and starting Lowry and Duncan Robinson next game. It just seems as though those guys are players that can be wonderful when they ignite and go on a streak—-but they (especially Strus) also have the potential to be big liabilities on the court if their shot isn’t falling. I feel like maybe you bring them off of the bench and give them a few minutes to see if their shot is on. If it is—leave them in at the expense of lowry/Duncan or love, but if they are not hitting—give them a short leash. Them combining to go 1-10 from the field yesterday with a combined 1 assist and 2 turnovers is pretty pathetic for being the starting backcourt in a finals game. Butler and Adebayo nearly played 45 minutes each last night. That will probably need to happen again in game 5 to have any chance of extending this series.

I was flying home yesterday and was able to watch the first 37 or 38 minutes (just before Jokic's 5th foul) but everybody's favorite airline, Southwest, had their internet and live TV out all flight. The Athletic had an absolutely fantastic recap (with some videos) of the last 9+ minutes though so at least I have that.

I'm going to miss Bruce Brown so much next year.

It was the asterisk season, 98-99, where the Spurs thumped the Knicks 4-1 in the Finals. This feels similar. That Knicks team was something. Sprewell and Houston.. Ewing too, right? (I should know). Was Kurt Thomas there too, or am I buzzed?

I could be wrong, but isn't that the playoffs the Ewing broke his hand and barely played in the playoffs?
Yea that’s where the Bill Simmons Ewing theory came from.

Let’s hope Denver keeps its foot on the gas pedal so I can win my “Denver in 5” bet. I think Miami may steal another game though so maybe I’ll hedge a bit.
Miami +340 on the money line for game 5, definitely hedge possible.
Bruce Brown was not good enough to play for the mighty Detroit Pistons who dumped him.

Bruce Brown doesn't fit for the Pistons timeline so he was traded. The Pistons haven't done a lot right for past 15 years, but trading Brown was the right move. They were never going to resign so they got something for him.

He is a role player and always will be, he would never have played this well for the Pistons because we don't have anyone like Jokic or Murray.

In the NBA you really have to get your stars first and then find role players later because you have to find those role players on the cheap.

I know. Just always seem like ex-Pistons, ex-Tigers and ex-Lions are always playing in the title games.

caldwell-pope was also drafted by the Pistons if I remember right.

Not to pile on (I grew up a Pistons fan), but the Nuggets have Detroit to thank for luring away Jerami Grant in late 2020.

Denver offered Grant the exact same $60mm deal, but he felt suffocated by Jokic/Murray/MPJ and wanted a much larger scoring role.

Four months later the Nuggets were thankfully able to fill the void with.......Aaron Gordon

Has anyone led the playoffs in points, assists, and rebounds before?
It’s seems hard to come up with any player that could have - but I don’t have the answer.

The best guesses would be Magic Johnson (but Lakers had rebounders) or Oscar Robinson (but I don’t know his playoff history).

I found this on reddit (from 5 days ago)

===================

No player in the history of the NBA Playoffs has ever led the entire playoffs in Points, Rebounds and Assists.

The closest was 2019-20 LeBron when he was 1st in Rebounds & 1st in Assists but 2nd behind AD in Points (by just 2!).

Jokic is 3rd in Points / 2nd Rebounds / 1st in Assists this year

The per game playoff stats (scoring in particular) are pretty meaningless, anyway.

7 of the top 8 scorers this year didn't even make it past the second round (Leonard, Curry, Edwards, Young, Durant, Brunson, Fox)

Pope wasn't that great in Detroit except one year. Plus he wants an average salary of 20 million a year after that one good year. It was smart to let him go.

This worked out well for both. Grant was decent for us and then we traded him. Got two years of decent play and a first round picks back.

Are ratings worse on the weekends? Seems like they would be.
It certainly seems like that must be the case, but I’m not sure what changed over the past few years, because Thursday and Sunday used to be staples and I would think that they would still be better than Fridays. Maybe part of it is international viewership.

Jokic now leads in all of those categories

2023 Playoff Leaders:

PTS: Nikola Jokić (572)

TRB: Nikola Jokić (253)

AST: Nikola Jokić (186)

I was listening to the Sirius XM radio channel while driving this weekend and a couple dudes were discussing the Heat vs Nuggets series. One of the dudes was talking about the talent gap and the depth of the Nuggets versus that of the Heat. The other dude was trying to argue that the “talent gap“ and depth between the two teams was being over exaggerated. The dude making the claim then made a point that I feel is very valid—and frankly— I had never thought of it. One of the players that the Nuggets have on their bench that basically never or seldom gets on the court is Reggie Jackson. He would/could arguably be a starter for the Heat in this series (with Herro hurt).

Reggie Jackson orchestrated a Clipper team into relevance even with its superstars being injured not that long ago. Aaron Gordon was the best player on the Magic for a year or two before joining the Nuggets. Gordon is asked to be a third or fourth option by the Nuggets, and Reggie Jackson is buried on the bench. If that doesn’t show that a roster is talented and deep—I’m not sure what does.

Reggie Jackson played significant minutes for the Nuggets after being acquired and played very poorly. That is why he is buried on the bench. Whether it's because he's over-the-hill at 32 or simply never integrated to their style is an open question.

But the overarching point is a good one. There are multiple talented young Denver bench players that haven't seen playoff daylight that might be future big contributors: Peyton Watson, Thomas Bryant, Zeke Nnaji and Vlatko Cancar in particular.
