2022 FBG, 172 to 1 Beatles Countdown 1-25 lists... And 173 to 1 Countdown from 1-64 lists! (2 Viewers)

It's been on the OP since '99 asked for it.
There's no links. You have a list on the first page without links. Your thread is difficult to follow and it becomes more difficult as it grows in length.

This countdown has links in the first post (Led Zeppelin)

This countdown has links in the first post (U2)

This countdown has links in the first post (The Beatles 1-204)

As a suggestion, it would be nice if you had a link to the writeup. In the writeup, you presumably will always have a link to the Spotify or YouTube.

Personal preference, I would put all that info on page 1. But it's your thread, not mine, do whatever you please kind sir.

Tonight, I'm writing up Beatles-thread supplements, while comparing U2 songs so I can submit rankings to @John Maddens Lunchbox, while watching the Olympics, while pondering my choices in the food draft.  (Later I'll also be eating our traditional Valentine's Day meal of Lou Malnati's heart-shaped deep-dish pizza.)  Any references in my write-ups to "The Edge," "monobob," or "xiao long bao" will be purely accidental.
No hurry. Better to be happy with them than second guess yourself.

Your energy is wonderful and probably underappreciated.

I woke up this morning to find out that I’m 5 pages behind in a thread that I’m excited to read.  I catch up only to find out that the thread is falling apart.   Cool.

Hey guys, due to a difference of opinion with *management*, I'm not going to be participating further in the updated write-ups of this thread.  I did submit a number of updates in the past few days that can be included, but I'm not going to spend time on any more of these going forward.   I authorize any and all posters to re-post my prior write-ups, and since no one read them to begin with, they will seem fresh!  Hopefully between those and Guido's thoughts, we'll get a good sense of these songs.  We also have a lot of knowledge from others here, so I look forward to reading more of that.
This is a bummer.

I read them all and they were the highlight for me.

What kind of foul sorcery is afoot here? If things do not go back to normally scheduled program ASAP, I am going to post a video of "Bee Better, Honey." It is my a capella avant garde sound collage medley of every Beatles' "Honey" song using Tibetan throat humming techniques that I think I read about once.

And I will post them. In. Every. Thread.

My 2019 ranking:  N/A

2019 write-up:  N/A

2022 Supplement:  One of two songs that I allowed on the list this time, together with “Real Love.”  Guido is going to provide the detailed background on how this one came to be, so I’ll skip that and just say that I happen to love this song.  Sure, it’s sort of “cheating” to me to put it on the list, since it came out well after John’s death (and won a Grammy in 1997!), but they all did contribute to this song that John had originally recorded in 1977.  Ringo has said that in the sessions for these songs, instead of feeling maudlin, the other three Beatles just pretended that John was there with them but had simply stepped out for lunch or for a cup of tea.  A lot of people don’t like the bridge that Paul added, but I think it’s sweet and lovely, just like the sentiment that Ringo expressed.

I wasn’t sure if this would get any votes but am glad it did, in part because I look forward to discussing it.

Guido Merkins

In 1995, the Beatles were back.  The Anthology was a huge project and the Beatles had 3 straight nights of network TV enthralled watching their story as told by them.

At first, there was going to be no new music as John’s death left the Beatles incomplete.  But George had this idea based upon something that had happened when he was with the Wilbury’s and Roy Orbison died.  He thought to ask Yoko if there were any unfinished John songs they could work on.

Out of that, came 4 different songs.  The most compete was Real Love, but next was a song called Free As A Bird, which was mostly complete, but maybe needed a bridge.

So, the Threetles got together with producer Jeff Lynne (George Martin had declined) to see if they could work on the new song.  Emotions being what they were, they decided they would pretend that John had gone on holiday and asked them to finish it up.  Much technical work was needed to make the cassette demo recording of John suitable for adding overdubs, but they did it and started to build it.

Some people were very disappointed by Free As A Bird.  I always liked it.  I will agree that the bridge Paul wrote (whatever happened to, the life that we once knew) was kind of cheesy.  But I like the fact that both Paul and George get to sing it which is how I would like to think of the Beatles if they had continued, more democratic.  George had earned that much.  I also LOVE George’s solo.  It’s his slide sound, which at first made Paul nervous because he wanted it to sound like the Beatles, not My Sweet Lord, but somehow George uses the slide and it sounds like the Beatles, not solo George.  And even without John there, the harmonies are magical.  Ringo heard the playback and thought, “it sounds just like them.”  So, even with John there only on tape, the Beatles showed up, as we always assumed they would.

The absolute best part of the song, however, is the accompanying video.  It’s a treat for a Beatles nut like me to try and pick out all the Beatles references.  It’s great fun and I would highly recommend it.

Never saw the Free As A Bird video before, that is cool. Picking out all the little Beatle references felt wistful and melancholy, which fits the song.

I'm not crazy about the bridge that Paul added, but mostly because the lyrics seem a little less deft than he is capable. And, for this one, I really wanted the full Paul mojo. I'll forgive him, though, because I imagine it would be almost impossible not to get a little sentimental working on something like this. I love George's slide, gives it a really nice ethereal note.

My brother and sister were probably slightly bigger Beatles fans than I was growing up.  When Anthology aired over Thanksgiving, I had just graduated college, and coming to my parents' house with my family made it required viewing.  It really sparked a resurgence in my Beatles fandom.  Watching the video for "Free as a Bird" and trying to pick out the references made for a wonderful experience for my family.  I know some die-hards poo-poo this song, but it will always hold a special place in my heart.

Appreciate your help here.  I'm just a numbers guy.  :D

I clicked on the three links above.  The Zep and U2 links only have a list that is linked to a YT video, not the post itself. (Or did I miss links to write up somewhere?)  As Krista has thanked me for very nicely when I make these posts, I have to edit the formatting as their cut and pastes don't keep their formatting. So these do take a bit of time to process on my end.  It is a lot of work (for all of us) putting this together.  I'll put a link to the google doc with all write ups in order with the links to the songs when this is done.

All my posts so far have the title linked to a YT video. I even discussed that in my  OP that I would try to make them live videos if possible. (I guess we are even on reading posts now LOL)

Krista's thread does have links to each post as you would like. It's behind a spoiler to protect those new to the thread. I don't know how to use a spoiler. Do those things even work with the board upgrades since then?

'99 asked me to put a list in the OP.  I immediately did and no one commented that was wrong.

If you look closely in the scene where they are in the big room near the end, you can see Stuart Sutcliffe.  I like how they still, after all these years, include Stu.....

As I said in my writeup, it's not Strawberry Fields Forever, but it's far from the worse Beatles song.  And the fact that, after 25 years, they can come together and it still feels like the Beatles, is cool.....I think they did a great job!!!

This thread is awesome.  How many lists were submitted?  Maybe put in the opening post?

Awesome job by the Fab 3.
Speaking for the Fab 3, I say thank you!!  Hope you enjoy the rest and share your thoughts as that's what this is all about.  Our shared love of the Beatles

I think mine is the only one with links to the posts.  We can’t do spoilers anymore AFAIK, but I don’t think it’s necessary.

Speaking of Stu, do you know of any good resources to deep dive into the Hamburg years? I know little about them, but they fascinate me. Video would be better, because I am turning into a millennial and already have a stack of unread books on my nightstand, but I am willing to compromise and add a couple more.

Tune In Vol. 1 by Mark Lewisohn is all about the early years of the Beatles up until they started to explode at the beginning of 1963.  It's the best source I've found to learn about the Hamburg years, but I know you said you preferred video, plus, this book is like 900 pages long.  But it's excellent.

There is a book called How They Became them Beatles which is good

Also Mark Lewison's Tune In is good, but really long.  But it covers the Hamburg years.

As far as movies, Nowhere Boy is good, but fictionalized in certain spots.  The first episode of the Beatles Anthology also covers it.

Those are the ones I've seen off the top of my head.  Most biographies are gonna cover that, but I've found the Lewison book the most well-researched.

I only read your guys write ups the moment I need them. So I can experience how awesome they are like everyone else does in here when I post them.  ❤️

Both your write ups on this and that video were awesome.  Never knew anything about this song before.

Free as a Bird sounds a bit more funereal than I’d prefer from the Beatles, but it’s still a remarkable accomplishment. If John had lived and there was a Beatles reunion after 1988, it may well have sounded Wilbury-ish, so it makes sense that this song does.

I'm happy to do this going forward if you wish.  @Getzlaf15can maybe put 1 link in the first post to direct to this post and I can keep editing this one?  Or, he may be able to copy these right into his first post. Just a thought if it'll help.
I tried to C & P them, but it lost the links.

So I posted a link to this post.  Appreciate you doing this!

I remember not liking it all that much when it came out, mostly because I had hoped for something more. I remember the classic rock radio station playing it for the first time with a ton of hype, and the DJ (who was also supposedly hearing it for the first time along with us) was definitely underwhelmed, along the lines of ... "ok then... gonna have to hear that a few times I suppose".

I like it much more now. Especially for what it is.

In the Free As a Bird video I say George walking from his car towards the Abbey Road studio front door and I thought "That's from the movie!"

If we agree to prevent Yoko from sitting on your amp, will you come back, George???

Just joking, but we'd love to have you back.............
