2022 Las Vegas Raiders (2 Viewers)

Raiders Rookie Running Backs Continue to Shine

Jairo Alvarado

The Las Vegas Raiders are 3-0 during the preseason, and for the most part, it’s been the running game that has helped the Raiders close out their opponents.

That was the case this Saturday, as the Raiders played and won their third preseason game against the Miami Dolphins.

This weekend, it was the running game that helped seal another win.

Although the Dolphins 344 yards outgained the Raiders 289 in total offense, it was the Raiders run attack that helped seal the win for the Raiders.

“We wanted to come out with a lot of energy and get some early momentum with the first drive on offense, and we did that with the help of a fourth down conversion, and we got ahead early,” Raiders Coach Josh McDaniels said.

“Then, we also wanted to put an emphasis on being tough on the ball this week and our defense did that. We were active and took the ball away a couple of times. We had some momentum early and were able to control the game somewhat for a while.”

The Raiders rushed for 144 yards while holding the Dolphins to 37, all in thanks to the running back committee.

From the beginning of the game, the Raiders running backs were able to pound the rock effectively, especially their two rookies.

Zamir White scored from two yards out to give the Silver and Black a 7-0 lead early in the first quarter.

Brittain Brown, who led the Raiders with 70 yards on nine carries, broke off a 36-yard run shortly after the Dolphins missed the potential game winning field goal.

While the offensive line continues to struggle in the passing game, the running backs have helped slash some of the worries.

Josh Jacobs opened the Hall of Fame game showcasing he hasn’t missed a beat.

The Silver and Black currently have seven backs on the roster, and none of them have made it easy for the Raiders coaching staff.

They’ll have at least five more roster cuts come this Tuesday, when teams will be asked to trim down their roster to the 80-player limit by Tuesday at 4 p.m. ET.

The Raiders will wrap up the preseason next Friday at 5:25 p.m. (PDT) when they host the New England Patriots, McDaniels’ former team, at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.

I watched the replay today. Mostly focusing on the OL. To me, they didn’t look that bad. There were mistakes and they were beaten from time to time. But it wasn’t horrible. I’d still love to see them bring in decent vet for more depth.

69 96 and 36 stood out on D.

When the pass rush did nothing, the zone was shredded. should be better with the starters in there.

Mullens to the Vikings for a conditional 7th
I love this! In the grand scheme maybe a 7th isn't a big deal but getting a 7th, hopefully, for a camp arm is a nice aggressive move. It says something good about the FO's philosophy, always working the deal.

Gruden probably would have just cut him in favor of Nate Peterman.

Yep. Love it. It shows acumen that hasn’t been around for a looong time.

Yea, Stidham showed he was the back up for sure. Mullens has just enough value to eek out a potential 7th round pick. It isn't an org changing move but if you add up these small moves they can make a real difference. Very happy with this. Gabbers to PS.

Considering that there are two 7th rounders and another two-three UDFAs making a strong push to make the final 53 on this team, I'd say these moves to acquire future 7th rounders have legit value.

Watching the replay.

If Leatherwood had allowed the sack Cotton did in the 1st quarter (Stidham mouthpiece and helmet flying) there would be torches and pitchforks in Vegas.
I need to see the game... but yea, I heard that that was bad. Cotton has had a good camp and otherwise good pre-season though but that play apparently was so bad as to put Parham potentially back in question as to possibly starting at G. I think Cotton still gets the job. I mean, everyone has a bad play.

The Raiders have signed LB Tae Davis
Davis, 25 (6-2, 224) has played in 40 career games with the Giants and Browns recording 52 tackles, 3 sacks, 5 PBU, 12 stops, and 5 TFL. He spent the 2021 season with the Texans.

Just got a Sleeper alert that says there are reports that the raiders will be releasing Drake. Hope that money goes to another OL!

Just saw the same. I am extremely surprised if true.
We have money right now to sign an OL.... I can't figure out if they really are confident or if they are hoping someone goes on market with cuts coming that would be more of a financial release than a playing release.

I have to believe they have a few guys they are hoping are available after cuts are made.

This does not surprise me. They seem to really like Abdullah.
Yea, there has been buzz about Abdullah but the odd thing is that I haven't seen it in pre-season. Some may not remember, but Abdullah was suppose to be one of the new rock star RB's when he came out. 2nd round pick... I believe the 4th RB taken. He was expected to have all the talent he needed to be a legit NFL starter and he was the starter for the Lions but kept getting hurt so his career got sidetracked.

So what's the list of 8th year breakout RBs look like?

IMO we've seen peak Abdullah and he's cheaper roster depth who, IIRC, has some value as a special teams return man (not sure if he defends kicks/punts). If there is a 3rd down RB it's likely Bolden and if Drake is let go it's a good sign for how the staff views Jacobs and White.

i was infatuated with him when he came into the league. didn't work out very well... :sadbanana:

They save $250k in cap space if he is cut, rather than traded. I posted upthread how that figure goes up considerably if he is traded instead. I forget now the actual difference.

Breakout is a little much... just pointing out that he is a little more (or potentially more?) than a career backup/ST guy that his career has been.

Same. I know I drafted him in at least one league.

A big reason I didn't expect them to cut him. Nothing saved and he undoubtedly has talent. A trade saves 2.75 million.
I guess he really has been stinking if they are ok eating 3.6 with no savings and having him walk.

He definitely derailed by injury and bad timing but at this point he is the definition of career backup/ST guy.

If they keep him over Drake is ST not the reason why?

i saw something where it saves money on the cap next year. not sure if that's correct or not

Just checked PFR and Drake has done some kick returning. He was pretty good at it too until last year when his average was 19.2 on 10 returns.

Ameer has done a lot more in the return game and his average has consistently been around 23 ypr.

Not sure if they defend kicks but both have some tackles on their stat sheet, none for Drake since 2017 though.

Per ESPN it's a cap hit this year and next year

"The Las Vegas Raiders plan to release veteran running back Kenyan Drake and absorb a $3.6 million salary-cap hit this year and $4.4 million in 2023 as a result."
Went over to over the cap and this checks out with what I am seeing there.
Tell me that you really didn't like Drake without telling me you really didn't like Drake. Geesh

maybe Drake quietly requested his release since the RB room is so crowded now, and the Raiders are politely complying. seems shocking, on a team that still needs OL help and just lost their newly signed DLineman to IR to just burn $3+$4million over 2 years. I can’t imagine drake can’t be better than freakin Abdullah. Double shuked

With the cap hit it is clear that it was purely a football decision... Has he lost a step since injury? Was he not not picking up the playbook? Was he not a scheme fit? Did Abdullah really beat him out that badly? I dunno. I haven't seen anything from camp buzz or pre-season to say one way or another.

He made comments on the way out that he doesn't think he got a fair shot to compete. Though he was saying he was at peace etc he did seem a little bitter and said "they still have to pay me" which is true.

Oh, so it’s official now? Hadnt seen that confirmed.
what I LOVE about this is that we don’t know much of anything (ie. Dirty laundry isn’t making it out to the press with this regime). Very “Belicheck” to give almost no info on stuff like this. so excited to see how this McDaniels/Ziegler thing plays out when we’re deep into the season. The first big test imo is showing the world that a) the OLine is fine and we have the bodies we need, or b) they make one more move around cut time that brings in an Olineman to upgrade the right side. Fingers and toes crossed.

Raiders vs Patriots 1-on-1:
WR Davante Adams vs CB Jalen Mills

Analysis: Lined up in press-coverage at LOS, Mills tries to jam Adams but Adams quickly attacks 1/2 man while gaining outside release. From there he then “stacks” Mills attacking his outside hip for 40-yard TD.

He made comments on the way out that he doesn't think he got a fair shot to compete. Though he was saying he was at peace etc he did seem a little bitter and said "they still have to pay me" which is true.
I think it's possible hes right, he wasn't given a shot, maybe viewed as Gruden's boy, and the dumbest contract people could think of till Christian Kirk came along. I mean, if you were McD etc, would YOU love this guy when you arrived?

I think it's also possible he coasted in camp, knowing he really had no financial worries, and knew from the restructure he was going to get cut.

With a coach mindset, I don't care who was who guy with what contract... yes, there are times that you need to cut because of a contract vs value to the team but this isn't that case. Being there was basically no cap savings... this had to be something about Drake or about all the other RBs clearly out doing him.

It also could be a message to the team. We don't care about whether your money is guaranteed or not... come and play. I dunno.

We can guess all day. Maybe Drake didn’t look like he was fully recovered and the other RBs are outplaying him. The Drake move was dumb from day 1 and the new staff is moving on.

Raiders defense, passing offense won series when it was starters vs starters. The DEFENSE TURNED IT UP ON THEM.

Mac Jones 6/13 through 3 team drills.

Latest 11-on-11 period:
- Run stuff
- DeVante Parker 15-yard TD
- Incomplete D. Harris
- Incomplete Agholor (PBU)
- Run stuff
- Incomplete Bourne (drop)

Pats offense has 1 positive run in 5 hand-offs.

Man this is Bad for the pats.

Jones 7/17 after his 2-minute drill ends in an INT.

- Run stuff
- Agholor shallow cross completion
- Incomplete Agholor (drop)
- Run stuff
- Incomplete Meyers (drop)
- Interception by LB Jayon Brown.

Don't have firm confirmation yet, but hearing that Drake's contract has offset language embedded, so if he signs with another team at the vet min (~$1 MM for his level of service in 2022), then that would add to the min $250k in cap savings from cutting him now. Given that offset, the only way he earns more than the vet min is if he commands greater on the open market than the $2.5 MM guaranteed by the Raiders, which is unlikely IMO.

So worst case, he doesn't play in 2022 at all and the Raiders only get $250k in cap relief. Best case, he signs somewhere and the Raiders get ~$1.25 MM in cap savings. Pie sky case, someone trades for him and pays him the entire $2.5 MM, giving them not only $2.75MM in cap savings, but also some sort of draft or player compensation.

No matter what happens, the Raiders are on the hook for $4.4 MM in dead cap in 2023 from Drake, but that would've been true even if they'd kept him, as his contract automatically voided with that hit embedded next year.

More from The Raiders Silver & Black on Facebook...

Pats Journalist Evan Lavar: “Davante Adams is absolutely ridiculous. He just effortlessly made a one-handed catch while keeping his feet in bounds for a TD. Incredible player.”

“Out of all the training camp practices I’ve seen since 2018, Davante Adams today was the best for any wide receiver. The things he was doing were downright ridiculous.”
