2022 Philadelphia Eagles - Leave Gannon in Arizona and let’s run through the NFC again in 2023. (1 Viewer)

If i had to guess, i would think that the Eagles started to get this impression later in '17 and earlier in '18, and hence why they drafted a QB in the 2nd round. so that is similar to the time frame Hurts has been with the org., so i think they can do a fair comparison with where both are looking as future QBs.

Eagles drafted Hurts because Doug wanted a developmental QB who could back up Wentz in case he got hurt. Hurts was suppose to be injury insurance so the team didn't have to rely on a Josh mcCown to win in the playoffs. Josh wasn't terrible by any means but was hurt in the game. A healthy McCown wins that game. SEA wasn't that great that year and we should've at least been playing in GB the following week.

The Eagles problem is they had a franchise QB but made every effort with him to act like they didn't have one. You draft a QB in the 2nd round usually you think he can be a franchise QB. You draft a developmental QB in Day 3 or if they go undrafted a priority UDFA. The Eagles learned from some of those mistakes how they handled this whole thing. There were things they did wrong just as much as Doug or Carson did at the time. Like I already said if someone say does eventually replace Hurts he's on the next plan out of town so they don't have a QB Controversy. Howie pulled the trigger fast because he really liked Hurts similar to Russel Wilson and didn't want to lose him like Wilson. I have not heard or seen anyone but based on scouting reports he was projected as a late day 2 early day 3 pick.

Either way I think the team has learned from the past and won't make those same mistakes.

I'm curious what other young QBs would need to pass this advanced scrutiny before we can agree they're the future of the NFL. Allen? Tua? Burrow?
Josh Allen had a very similar arc to what Hurts has.

Year 1: 53% comp, 2k yards, 10 TDs, 5 wins
Year 2: 59% comp, 3k yards, 20 TDs, 10 wins
Year 3: 69% comp, 4.5k yards, 37 TDs, 13 wins

After his year 3 breakout season, no one was saying he still had to “keep doing it another year or two” to prove he’s for real. He immediately entered the top-5 QB conversation.

🤔

Allen was projected as a top pick and first rounder coming in for the draft. Hurts was projected as a Late day 2 early day 3 pick so different expectations for different players. Allen also didn't have as big of a jump in % from 1 year to the next like Hurts has from this and last year. Hurts has only started 2 yrs Allen was in his 3rd year by that point.

Have we even seen Hurts' ceiling yet? It's hard to imagine a QB playing better than he is right now but no one expected this kind of growth.

The 2017 Wentz had both Ajayi and Blount as RBs. Hurts is basically the power back in our offense.

Hurts TD/INT ratio is comparable to the Foles' 27/2 season.

Offense scores points, but the defense wins championships...

Josh Allen started more games in his year 1 than Hurts. His QB rating progression was 68, 85,107 during his first 3 years. Hurts' progression in fewer games is 77, 87, 108.

So with more game experience, Allen had a lower QB rating than Hurts in their 3rd year as a starter even though JA was drafted with more expectations. Hurts, with supposed lower expectations, is having a better 3rd year than JA.

I'd trade him for Herbert who I was wrong about straight up Allen Mahomes and Burrow. Even Tua IMHO. I also think a lot of people underrate Derek Carr he's just been in a terrible situation. I'd probably want something else included like a pick swap and such but that would only be because of both performances this year and I'd be trading Hurts at a high price and cheaper deal.
Considering trading Jalen Hurts for Carr ignores how far that trade would set back the Eagles. It's hard to believe anyone would even consider it. After Wentz's best year in Philly, who were you suggesting trading him for?

I thought Wentz was the guy. Wentz overall had the talent overall 1st round pick highly touted coming out of college. At the time I wasn't going to trade anyone. I thought he was impressive in College when I saw him as well. Did a lot of stuff I wanted in a QB for todays game. I think injuries combined with a lot of other stuff robbed of us of a franchise QB.

Hurts was highly touted coming out of college, really inconsistent, lost his job project as a late day 2 early 3 pick. Reminds me more of a Dak Prescott. Like it was said above this team will look much different after this season. Seeing a lot of defenses Hurts is in the same offense for the first time since HS. If Hurts needs consistency like that I'm scared of his future when Steichen leaves if thats the case. He has a great team and talent around him this year. I think he's a guy who thrives on the talent around him not himself a lot of times. Don't see him carrying a team to the playoffs. I look back and watch the '19 season where Carson threw for 4K while the skill guys were all on the training table taking practice squad guys to the playoffs. I ask myself what QBs could do that in the NFL if needed? I don't see that out of Hurts.

Look Hurts is a great guy, teammate everyone loves him etc etc. What matters most to me is on the field and getting the job done. Like I said I wish Football had numbers similar to baseball to help more on these things. I'd love to know if we have someone accumulating advance stats in terms of how many throws were made with a high success rate completed vs those with a low Success completion on QBs overall or other things.
Isn't that saying "I can't find any stats to back up my opinion"?

Or it can help accurately for the most part help predict a guys future success. Numbers don't mean everything. I used baseball advanced stats already to explain it perhaps read that post first and then come back to me. I've said this for yrs you can look at a stat sheet without watching a game and see a guy who threw for 3OO yds a 5 TDs and think he did well. What the boxscore doesn't tell you was the one play had a missed penalty on the offense that was a TD, 2 plays guys missed assignments and the team they played was just horrible in Pass Def. He was was also throwing 5-1O yds and the defense couldn't tackle.

Then you look at another box score guy goes 11-25 1TD 3 INTs. Boy he had a horrible game. No his skilled guys dropped 8 easily catchable balls, the one INT the receiver ran the wrong route and 2 were tipped for INTS. The weather also wasn't great for throwing with high winds and rain and the offense probably should've ran more.

I use to argue all of this with the Ben Simmons Stans. Oh he's amazing look at his stats. Yeah I see them but when I watch the guy I look at a guy who can't take over a game, scared to shoot and plays well because of the talent around him. I'm not calling Hurts Ben Simmons by any means here btw just using him as a very good recent example of how numbers lie. Similar to people thinking Giants were good this year. They ran the table on some bad teams and their entire offense was Barkley and Daniel Jones. Barkley looks like he has nothing left in the tank now this year and seems to be injuries again.

Yeah I've been saying Allen is the closest to comp for Hurts. Its amazing how close their 3rd year stats are. And both were 24 years old.
JA & JH year 2 side-by-side comparison.

JA & JH year 3 side-by-side comparison.

Strikingly similar.
Its almost as if adding a young, developing QB a significant weapon to catch the ball over the previous, much inferior cast, helps accelerate said development!

Something ya know, we preached for a good 5 years to Andy Reid when he started out.

Hurts was projected as a Late day 2 early day 3 pick
Now you're making things up. Hurts was mocked in round 2 a lot. And also in round 3 early on. Your wording is suggesting he was late 3rd-4th/5th round grades.
Hurts' NFL draft profile. Projected to be a 2nd/3rd round pick as a project who could develop into a starter. Eagles took him with the 21st pick of the 2nd round.

Hurts, a Houston native, was rated the No. 1 dual-threat quarterback in the country after starring at Channelview High School, where his father served as head coach. He signed with Alabama and led the Tide to the national championship game, starting 14 games and earning Freshman All-American, first-team All-SEC, SEC Freshman of the Year, and Maxwell Award finalist honors (204 of 382, 62.8 completion percentage, 2,780 yards, 23 touchdowns, nine interceptions; set a school record for a quarterback with 954 rushing yards, 13 touchdowns). He started all 14 games for head coach Nick Saban in 2017, again leading the team to the national championship game (154 of 255, 60.4 completion percentage, 2,081 yards, 17 touchdowns, one interception; 154 carries, 855 yards, 5.6 ypc, eight touchdowns).

I'm sure his cousin's boss told him he could go round 4.

"Howie pulled the trigger fast because he really liked Hurts " - I mean.. good, right? We were sitting on our couch criticizing, but that was 100% the right move.

They don't give X Player enough credit" every single year. It gets old. Caring too much about what others say is SUCH a Cowboys thing.
@Terpman22

I knew if I just waited a day or day there would be a pile more. Honestly, you don’t read the posts? Everyday? Ray Charles could see it. You don’t think it’s….odd?

Eagles fans are having the season of most fans lives so far. Instead of kicking back and enjoying it, you all spend your days trying to convince everyone how good your team and especially your qb are. That’s all I was trying to say before.

Don't want to hijack the thread as a non-Eagles fan (Bengals fan coming in peace), but I have a rather large bet on the Eagles to win the NFC East from before the season started.

How are people feeling about closing strong and winning the division? 4 games left: at Bears, at Cowboys, vs Saints, vs Giants

Favored by 9 this week at Bears. Eagles will definitely be favored against the Saints and Giants (hopefully won't matter anyways), the Cowboys game, I could see close to a pick em, but that one is really going to be the make or break game. Are Eagles going to be as motivated as I would think the Cowboys would be in that one? Eagles-Cowboys tie breaker scenario's scare me if Cowboys beat them.

Eagles are the best team in the NFC. They'll win the NFC East. The Chicago and Cowboys games are going to be tough since it will be the second and third straight road games.

I saw an article from 2017 and here were the numbers for the last game of three straight road games: "Over the last three years, the team in the third consecutive road game is 13-23 straight up and 11-23-2 against the spread. Over the last five years, they are 20-33 straight up, and 22-29-2 against the spread. Finally, over the last ten years, they are 35-69 straight up, and 46-55-3 against the spread." According to NFL Network since 2018, teams with 3 straight road games are 22-11. So far in 2022 teams with 3 straight road games are 2-6. GB went 0-3, KC is 1-1, MIA is 0-2 and PHI is 1-0. This week for Philly is a huge game, they have to win this week.

agree i think this bears game could be a trap as they may be looking ahead to the dallas game
Not me. Bears don't do much at all well. Containe Fields from going on those long runs and its a wrap. I expect a heavy dose of the run game on offense, and disciplined blitzing a bit more on defense. I know, outside Gannon's wheelhouse usually, but you gotta play certain players differently. He adjusted a bit to how he defended Tennessee and their run game, so hoping a little more here. Either way, at this point, considering HOW DOMINANT this team is, any more L's where we play starters will truly surprise me.

Overdue for a down game. Would rather have one before the playoffs. Don't get me wrong maybe we can just win every game easily and rest starters every game like we have been. But do you really think that's realistic?
I haven’t played much football this season, I’ve been enjoying the fall horse racing.

I’m unloading on Philly this week. I don’t see a way they don’t blow out the Bears

Under.
And no it's not odd, and even if it is, who cares? Is your "I'm better than you" moment really you telling us that we discuss another team so much? There's exactly one eagles fan who isn't enjoying this season. Having discussions doesn't mean we aren't enjoying it, my god you're the biggest troll in here if all you do is talk about the fans in here. I've made plenty of posts about football in here... how many posts have you made? Do you want to look?

I guess you successfully got the response you were looking for. Congrats?

You post more in the Eagles thread than the Cowboys thread and then throw insults about Eagles fans caring too much about another team :lmao:

My days lol. You got 10x the posts on this place in half the time. But sure I spend my days here trying to convince people in my own team's thread that my 12-1 Eagles (for the record the best team I have seen in my life) is better than everyone else. That is funny. B/c you and I both know they rank like #1 and if not like #3 in pretty much every single measurable statistic you can think of. PPG, Sacks, DVOA, Turnovers, Record, MVP Front Runner, Top Passer. YOU coming into the rival's thread that you look up to in the standing each day to try to either get a rise or kind of try to put water on the fire that our team is right now, tells us all we need to know. Not to mention how "We always mention the Cowboys" yet you got star players talking about "Is it Hurts or the System" the week you guys play...Jacksonville? Rent free and all...I do enjoy the back and forth, but ya'll lost a lot of steam for sure once the "Zero Rings" jokes died and well, every time you guys *think* you are on the cusp of "owning the division" we are there as the best team the next year, during Dak's short career so far.

I don't think it'll be a blowout.
Bears coming off a bye, well rested, at home with an extra week to prepare.
Eagles 2nd game on the road, in a game sandwiched between two very important divisional games.
No clue how the Eagles will do against a running QB like Fields.

Not saying I think the Bears will win, but it'll be close.

I'm tempted to put Wentz's 2017 season under the same microscope so we can show how he was a bum all along, he just got lucky or played bad teams or whatever other excuse.

Wentz played some great defenses and teams that year. The Eagles schedule that year going into the season was ranked tied for the top 1O in hardest schedules. This year it's was ranked as one of the softest schedules in the league.
Fortunately the road isn't going to get any harder for Hurts this year. The NFC (and the NFL for that matter) is probably the weakest I can recall in a long time. Even Buffalo and KC have some glaring weaknesses at the moment. I hate to say this but the Eagles really do have a lot pressure to win it all this year. They're the best team in the NFL right now and 2nd place doesn't appear to be all that close. So yes they had a soft schedule but it should continue (even in the playoffs).

When it comes to the Eagles future I'm less concerned about a possible Hurts drop-off than I am the rest of the roster. There's a lot of pieces in place that are most likely this year only or getting older. That's why I'd take that devil deal that came up earlier for a SB this season, because who knows what we'll have next year. Could be holes at RB, CB, LB, safety, d-line. They can't resign everyone. Not saying they go back to being a bad team, but I'm not expecting this level of dominance next year unless Howie works some crazy magic again.
I'd take that deal if I had an incompetent GM that can't manage the salary cap like that dude down in Tennessee. But we got Howie Roseman, the revolutionary GM that popularized NFL trades in the league. Trades didn't happen as much they are happening today until after Howie Roseman came into the league.

:lmao:
Also screw Dallas haha
The Dallas Cowboys have been brought up in pretty much every page of this thread for the last couple months. And not by Cowboys fans
Almost as much as Cowboys players going to IR each week.

Super cool take. Grow up.

I am starting to feel this too. Haha the pressure of being the best team and not winning it all. No chance we go 1/done like some of the teams we have seen recently with the 1 seed like Baltimore and Dallas, but yeah for sure, considering the lack of any real powerhouses in the conference and the "monster" teams of the AFC showing weaker as the season goes, NOW is the time. So glad Hurts is built the way he is. With his leadership mixed with the few vets remaining from the 2017 team, there should be no "the game is too big" moments for this team.

Narrator: "It was not close."

Eagles-Cowboys tie breaker scenario's scare me if Cowboys beat them.

lol good question. The variance though, I mean they certainly have the talent to blow the game wide open. I wouldnt put money on it, since it could easily be a 34-10 game. Just saying it's not guaranteed.

Some of these are fair points, but also due to "law of large numbers" b/c I don't think any team, for whatever reason, has as many fans posting on it as Eagles fans.
Djax is getting killed for being that guy that "no matter what, is never going to change his original take despite all evidence since take was made to prove the complete opposite"

2017 Wentz was better than Dak. Not sure how that is debatable. Dak is the better QB now. Cool?
The bolded is the funniest b/c check the stats in the games against any/all current playoff teams and the point differential.
My question for the now evolving narrative that seems to be something along the lines of "Well, LOOK AT THE STACKED ROSTER anyone that is QB behind that line with those weapons ESPECIALLY with that schedule would be MVP" and its a fallacy, a false take, what have you trying to explain away greatness. It happens to greatness often. My question though, if people are not playing 20/20 rearview vision being 100% right all the time, show me your takes knowing 1. easy schedule 2. obviously awesome roster where you or anyone even has the Eagles winning 10 games.

And being real, if you had a single fan on your board that the entire board for the most part rolled their eyes at, and an Eagles fan came in and was like "Yeah yeah, what this guy says"

Would you consider that trolling?

LOL. Again its all good. Not much time left to explain away.

Wait and see is one thing, but he has in the past said he won't be sold until Hurts wins two Super Bowls. He denigrates virtually EVERY good thing Hurts does. He talks about how the Eagles should TRADE!!!!! Hurts if they see a Qb they like and could get in the draft. Sorry....that's beyond the pale absurd, and even a die-hard Eagles hater like you should be able to rcognize that. The fact that you would jump in and defend that, and suggest the rest of us (of which there are many) are the crazy ones is just trolling (though I'm not 100% certain you realize this or if you're almost as off as Djax!)

I don't see how anyone isn't sold at this point, but not being sold isn't really the problem...it's the constant never ending criticism of the league MVP frontrunner that just doesn't make sense. WHO TRADES (pr talks about trading) the MVP frontrunner? HOW DOES THAT MAKE REMOTE SENSE?!

Is he really, though? From many of his recent posts in this thread, he's talking about trading Hurts first chance he gets. That's not taking a "wait and see approach". That's insinuating that the guy is going to be a bust and strike while the iron is hot. Good thing for Eagles fans that he's not GM because nobody in their right mind trades a guy who could be on the path of becoming a legit franchise QB. Any GM would at least take a "wait and see" approach.

BTW....the weakest schedule in the league stuff....is that still true or was that just the preseason expectation? I mean...the NFCE has collectively the best record in the league, and that makes up 6 of the games.
Seems like Eagles scheule has been...average? Either way, they've beaten some good teams handily (Vikes)

I can certainly understand some skepticism or a healthy wait-and-see approach. But my goodness, he never gives Hurts props or has anything positive to say about his performance. Every good throw is met with "he missed a guy on the other side of the field" or "he got lucky there, should have been an interception", "that defense was horrible". Never an attaboy or an admission to how much Hurts has progressed. He's gone from "he needs to show improvement this season" to nothing is ever good enough.

IMO, its because he planted his flag over the off-season that the team wasn't sold on Hurts and would draft a new rookie with the draft picks the team stockpiled. Just some admission that hey, this guy might be pretty good. But its ALWAYS negative after each game. Always.

'17 Eagles Opp win % .461
'22 Eagles Opp win % (as of now) .462

It's a pathology and we should stop indulging it.

I think we should merge the Dallas thread into this thread. Why not invite all the NFC East teams into one thread? That would be awesome if we could keep it about football with the occasional jab or two.

To me what's scary about the Eagles is the team is focused and at the right time of the season. The fact that this team has another level they can play at is insane. Goedert coming back is well rested.

Dallas over the years seems to lose focus as the season progresses. It's like they get a little satisfied with early successes. The Eagles need to be tested in these last few games and I hope Dallas brings it.

Once the playoffs begin the season starts over and stats, and win records mean diddly squat.

Dude has a GREAT season against one of the weakest schedules in the league. I personally think he’s going to be a good one, but Djax is rightfully (imo) taking the wait and see approach. And getting kilt for it
I can certainly understand some skepticism or a healthy wait-and-see approach.

Always.
Personally, it's gotten to the point now for me that I scroll by most of his posts, as they've become increasingly irrational. It's a shame because he has had some interesting/knowledgeable posts in the past

You guys are just piling on at this point. He has an opinion and you guys are taking shots at him just because he doesn’t agree with you.

Just because he wants to see what happens when the team isn’t loaded around him doesn’t mean he’s a hater or a moron or crazy.

Shame on all of you. Typical tribalism.

Eagles/Niners NFC championship game would be fun.
In Philly I like our chances. That defense is good but has some areas that can be exploited.

On their offense, Purdy does not scare me. He's efficient and working well within the system right now but every week is a new game film. We'll have 8 total games to see what he can do by that point. I think Gannon will have a better idea how to attack him.

They don't give X Player enough credit" every single year. It gets old. Caring too much about what others say is SUCH a Cowboys thing.
@Terpman22

That’s all I was trying to say before.

o/u on 20 mins until deamon starts pounding his keyboard complaining about my post even though most of his posts anymore are him whining about me and @DJackson10 and not about football
You can't see how this is trolling? You don't see how absolutely ridiculous the anti-Hurts sentiment from DJax is? REALLY?

MOst of the people in here are still nervous

I’ve been around these parts long enough to remember the “Wentz is better than Dak!!!!” stuff.
I also remember all of the “Howie is God!!!” then the “Zomg Howie sucks this is bull **** FIRE HOWIE!!!!’l and now back to the “Howie is just the BEST EVAH !!!!!” that goes in on this thread nowadays. If you don’t recall all of this you are not being honest.

Show me a team thread on this board with more defensive and butthurt fans in it than this one and I’ll never post in this one again lol.

I’ll wait
i would say the Cowboys thread, but there’s no one in there. All the Cowboy fans are in here being defensive and butthurt in the EAGLES thread.

And Hurts is better than Dak. By far. Not even debatable.

We got a good look at Purdy last night. Decent, poised, but didn't seem to flash a ton of raw talent. Had a couple passes that should have been picked off. That 49ers defense is crazy good and that makes them very dangerous, but I'm having a hard time seeing a deep playoff run with Mr Irrelevant at the helm on what 5 or 6 starts? Don't get me wrong...I'm impressed by the kid and what he's done and I'm rooting for him to have a nice long career....but it's a bit much to expect a deep run from him.
