2023-2024 NBA Salary Cap Draft - SECOND Annual Battle for the Wikkid Cup - Preseason Rankings are In! (3 Viewers)

Steph Curry, G, lots of money

I couldn't pass on pairing two of the 5 best players in the NBA. Defense is going to be... Interesting, but there is no better possible offensive pairing for Doncic. This team is going to have an o-rtg of 130.
Yeah. Thought about going this route too. Figured someone else could take the most expensive player this year though.

I ran through what kind of team I would have with this pairing. It'll be interesting. I have a few specific targets the next couple rounds. If I can land a couple of them, I'll feel good. If not, it could be a rough go of making a competent team and defense around these guys.

He's expensive and wasn't even drafted last year, but I think he is going to have a hell of a season with his new squad. Big gap until my next pick, so wanted to grab one of the last elite players:

PG Damian Lillard $45,640,084
I wondered how much longer he'd last after last night's performance.
I was hoping his high salary would leave him on the board later, like last year. Going to have to rethink some strategy now, haha.

Biggest problem is they are both minus defenders. However, defenders are cheaper than scorers, so filling in shouldn't be as tough as trying to find someone to score for you.

I feel like the third round reversal was a very bad idea with twenty teams. And I benefit from it.
I think it’s more important with more teams, but that is negated when the top of the draft wasn’t all superstars.

Yeah, I was all set to go with a big name or two with my first two picks, but it became evident that finding a couple of value guys was more important based strictly on what everyone else was doing.

3RR was known from the get-go. I don't get a shot at the top 5 guys, so there should be some compensation there. If those picking in the middle chose to eschew grabbing a star for value, that's on them.

Giannis needs to be surrounded with shooters, and as we saw last night needs someone to help facilitate the offense so he doesn’t feel the need to charge through a wall of defenders every time down the floor.

Yo Mama’son was hoping for Curry or Lillard here but is happy to take this guy as a shooting PG option that won’t break the bank like the other guys would.

2.18 - Darius Garland - PG, Cle

Need a specific type of PG to build around Jokic, and no remaining option is better than the guy who just won a title with him - at 2.20 I'm taking Jamal Murray ($33,833,400). The salary cap may keep me from entirely reconstructing the Nuggets' championship roster, but maybe I'll get close!

3rd round reversal is here. @Chemical X is on the clock!

I was hoping he'd fall back to me. Nice pick.

3.02 - Jimmy Butler, PF, MIA $45,183,960
Have been hoping he would fall to me for the last 10 picks. One of the best competitors and 2-way players in the league. He is coming off of what was his best season statistically and a magical Finals run. From everything I've read, he is motivated to win it all this year and I don't see him slipping backwards outside of injury. I hate what he does to my Celtics, but he is a legit superstar and alpha guy to lead my team. If he plays like he did last season, he is worth the $$.
Plus his team photo is easily #1 in the league.

3.03 - LeBron James, PF, LAL $47,607,350

Even at 38 years old, still one of the 10 best players in the league. He's going to miss games in the regular season and it appears that they are going to try managing his minutes this year. But when he plays, he's going to average 20 pts, 9 rebs, and 8 asts. Will be the elite playmaker who makes this offense run and is still a good defender. And Jaren is the perfect big man for him to play with considering his shooting and defense.

Illegal pick since you don't have Lillard.

But I got some of that Heat culture going for me, which is nice.

Team Trader Jake
3.04 LAC SF Kawhi Leonard $45.6 mil

The Claw has that deadly combination of tough defense and the ability to close games deep in the playoffs. He also seems to miss too many games of late, but we've hired Uncle Dennis, so it's all good.

It's crazy that a guy knocked for his shooting coming out of school now shoots over 40% from deep. Would I want to sign him to a max money deal for the next 5 years? No. Would I want him for the title chase this season? Hell yeah. [cue Kawhi laughing]

Was the other guy I strongly considered with my pick. Went with the better playmaker in LeBron, plus felt LeBron had a better chance to play more games. But very tough decision.

I spent a few minutes splitting hairs between Butler, Kawhi & LeBron before settling on Jimmy.
