2023-2024 NBA Salary Cap Draft - SECOND Annual Battle for the Wikkid Cup - Preseason Rankings are In! (2 Viewers)

Through 14 picks, only 5 of ESPN's top 10 players and 7 of the top 20 players have been taken (and 9 of top 46).
:moneybag:
For sure. It was levied as a criticism, I just thought it was fascinating.
Yeah the salary impact adds a lot more strategery than just a straight fantasy/rankings draft.

Yeah, I've never done this before, but it's pretty clear that getting bang for you buck is going to be important.

I drafted #1 last time and #5 this time, so the group strategy has kind of unfolded between my picks both drafts, but it seems like there is a little more push for lower salaried first rounders this year. Last year had a few, including Ball, but I feel like there was a bit more lean into best player available. I also feel like there was more tier 2/3 talent available for less than $10M than there is this year. Looking back at last year's teams, it doesn't seem like there was a huge correlation to money strategy and overall teambuilding success. It was more about not blowing your top 3-4 or so picks and finding a couple diamonds in the rough otherwise.

1.19 Tyrese Maxey, SG/PG Philadelphia $4,343,920

I don't really like taking a #2/3 guy in the first round, but these quality starters with low salaries are flying off the shelves and he's the best of what's left there by far. He has shot 42.7% & 43.4% from 3 the last two seasons. He is also going to be taking on a bigger playmaking role without a certain someone playing for the Sixers. Getting top end offensive production at this price seems like a necessity in this thing.

1.18 MEM PF/C Jaren Jackson $27,102,202

Elite defender who can still provide above-average shooting/scoring for the position. Can play both the 4 and the 5 and will allow for some flexibility in building out the roster going forward.

@Jayrod is on the clock

I like this pick. He was one of the others I was looking at when I drafted Markkenen. Stud shot blocker for sure, but for a guy who is 6'11", you'd think he'd get more rebounds. Heck. Ja Morrant averaged almost as many rebounds as Jackson.

Probably the constant foul trouble.

Adams nearly doubled Jackson rebounds in one less minute per game. Of course, he didn't do much else, so there's that ...

That is definitely going to be a consideration while I build around him. He showed in the FIBA tournament this year that he's just not going to be even an average rebounder for his size. But he's such a good defender and scorer that I can live with that.

I at least am just reacting to last year, knowing how many awesome guys were available in the 4/5/6/7/8 rounds because of price.

2.02 - Franz Wagner, SF, ORL $5,508,720

Just not in love with anyone ranked higher to pass up this level of production at bench player prices. What sold me was his defense. Maxey doesn't defend and my team will need to account for that to be truly competitive. Wagner is a versatile and effective defender while providing solid offensive production without needing the ball.

Basically I'm making this pick to leave more options in the next couple of rounds. I eyeballed a TON of expensive guys but they all had a flaw and I just didn't want to hang my hat on them without having some quality role players and depth around them. Wagner allows for that.

Gah, sniped again! Franz was going to be a great fit with Jaren! Oh well, moving on.

2.3 OKC SG/SF Jalen Williams $4,558,680

Also wanted to get a low-priced upside guy to allow for some more flexibility later on. But I really think Jalen has the possibility of being a low-end All-Star in the next few years. Good defender on the wing who can really shoot and even has some playmaking ability in a pinch.

@trader jake is up

2.04 SAS SG/SF Devin Vassell $5.8 mil

Learned from Pop in San Antonio as a young player and it shows. He's an underrated shooter that moves the ball and plays the wing with good length. He already has great anticipation, resulting is a decent number of steals on defense and an ability to set up defenders on offense. It'll be nice to see more people appreciate his game now that Wemby is drawing more eyeballs to Spurs games.

OK, now it’s time for a real star. Almost went with him last round. Surprised he’s still available.

2.05 - Kevin Durant - PF, Suns
$47,649,433

☀️
I was a bit surprised too. I probably wouldn't have had him in my top 12 or so due the stupid high salary, he would have been somewhere probably in my low teens.
