2023-2024 NBA Salary Cap Draft - SECOND Annual Battle for the Wikkid Cup - Preseason Rankings are In! (2 Viewers)

We are the in the first week of the season and we are already getting the playoffs hot takes and in the wrong thread.
We are just bored waiting for picks. I have zero interest in NBA debates. Almost as bad as arguing politics. I already regret I got sucked into the one.

3.15 Trey Murphy F $3,359,280

If he hadn't torn his meniscus a couple months ago, he would have been picked by now. It's hard to find long shooters that can really get up lots of threes and also defend. He's not a lockdown defender type, he's more capable and versatile than flat out great so he may be my 6th man rather than a starting wing. Regardless, he puts up about 10 threes per 100 possessions (Doncic and Curry put up about 12) and makes them at a 40% clip, and he led the Pels in WS by a large margin with 7.6 win shares last year. He'll look remarkably like the Nuggets' starting SF in this lineup for 10% the cost.

@Eephus
Loved him at Notre Dame! I thought he had retired for some reason. Love the pick.

3.17 - Jaylen Brown - Wing - Boston

$31,830,357

Another Celt that Pik can criticize for things that he doesn't do but I think he's a good two-way fit as a third option on my team.

I looked at last year's teams to see when Brown was drafted and I noticed that my first three picks from this year were all on @Yo Mama's team in 22-23. :bag:

Not sure anybody's star has fallen quite as hard as his since the playoffs started - he was 2nd Team All-NBA last year and makes a very reasonable salary.

I considered him last pick. There is alot to love about JB imo. Part of my frustrations with Tatum is that I feel that he really holds JB (and others) back with his selfish play. Like his idol, he just doesn't make others better. If Jab doesn't get his in transition, he is usually reduced to standing behind the 3pt line just waiting for the ball. Too often it comes with just a couple of second left on the shot clock. I would love to see JB on a different team or at least on a different team than Tatum to see him unlock his full potential. JB's salary jumps to over 50 next year and he was REALLY bad at the end of the playoffs last year. But that wasn't all his fault imo.

There's definitely some recency bias involved but his playoffs performance didn't dissuade the Celts from giving him the supermax.

Yeah, I was just going to comment on how you’ve got three of my guys from last year.

I’ll pick in a few. At a party and need to text my son.

Son of Yo Mama selects:

3.18 - Marcus Smart - Mem G
$18,583,713

For good or bad, he’ll have a big role in Memphis this year, especially with Ja out for a while.

If Tatum is a great as you all think, then it will become very obvious with the Celtics winning it all and Tatum as the MVP.
So he needs to win a championship and an MVP or he is a failure? Geez
With the talent around him and the cash he is making, he need to at least come close.
Close like making the Finals?
It's not black and white obviously. Have you actually watched the Celtics playoff runs the last few years? It will be obvious if it's different. Holliday should make a positive contribution that hopefully offsets the players lost. KP's health matters obviously. But yeah, top contract, got named All NBA and all that. Has his big three. Joker, Giannis, and Stef are measured by the same fwiw. I think if LD had Tatums supporting cast the last couple of years he would have made a finals or close.
The Celtics were in the Finals in 2022.

This kills me, lol. My favorite player since Paul Pierce. He was so good last night too. I was praying he would slide. Great pick.

I know. I don't understand why you posted that?

You said he has to win a Championship (or come close) in order to be considered great. I guess maybe I’m confused because he did come close by getting to the Finals, didn’t he?

I meant now that it's "his team" like he wanted. He had a couple of big games in that run but it's not like he led them to the finals, lol. People are saying right now he is a top five guy. He has his big three players, his cash, and his coach. So now he needs to show everyone he is one of the top players in the NBA, not just a potential guy or piece. No excuses imo.

Time to go bargain bin hunting:

3.20 - Quentin Grimes ($2,385,720)
Can defend 1-3 at an elite level with a reliable 3 point shot. As cheap of a starter as you’ll get.

4.01 - Immanuel Quickley ($4,171,548)
Extremely versatile two-way weapon. Talented shotmaker who can play on or off ball and is a pesky defender at the other end.

Son of @PIK95 is back up!

Overall, well I'm sure more teams and way higher cap is also part of it, my take on value vs wtf picks is that this year's draft is way more competitive I felt like I was basically getting easy fantastic options at every pick last year and this year is way more talent going early, even with some of the slips for contract value.

e.g., I really kind of expected to get Paul George in the 5th or 6th at his massive $ amount - and many others going close to where I'd have put them, but thought they'd fall based on last year.

I've been on the road for a while the last 30 hours and unable to update my spreadsheet, but seeing a ton of guys I was targeting at 4/5 the turn get taken.

This draft is so great.

Loves Marcus Smart, hates Jayson Tatum.

I’m glad you aren’t the GM of the Celtics.

I would have gotten a Hershel Walker haul for Tatum fwiw.
