Got back home from Europe last night. Just in time to NOT watch any Celtics Playoff games. Perfect timing.

Missed nothing. Worst finals in recent memory? What was worse?

Last year.
2018

Even 2017. The Warriors were so good they went 16 - 1 and beat a loaded Cavs team in 5 games that probably beats every team that has won a title in the last 6 years in 6 games or less.

Was Horford ever the best or second best player on his nba team? Maybe in atlanta for a season or two? Would you consider him a main contributor to this title?

I don’t think he is close to being in the HOF. That 12% chance seems right.

I will bet anyone any amount of money that Horford will make the hall of fame

Doesn't the BB HOF consider college too? And he has 2 NCAA titles to go with his NBA title - probably will get in. But I'll never forgive him for leaving the Hawks to join the C's - **** him.
The BB HOF considers all basketball, including college, Olympics, other international, etc. it’s also probably the most opaque of all major sports hall of fame voting

For several years his best teammates were either Joe Johnson, Josh Smith, or Paul Milsap. I think there were several years where Al was the best player on those Atlanta teams.

Somehow I totally forgot that the top of the 2016 and 2017 draft was identical. 76ers at 1, Lakers at 2, Celtics at 3, Suns at 4.

Philly got Ben Simmons and Markelle Fultz
LA got Brandon Ingram and Lonzo Ball
Boston got Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum
Phoenix got Dragan Bender and Josh Jackson

Oof

Correct me if I wrong, but weren't both those picks the Nets picks from the Garnett, Pierce trade?

They were although the Tatum pick was actually 1.1 and the C's than made a deal with Philly to go down to 1.3 where they took him, and Philly took Fultz...funny part of both picks is that there were a lot of people that wanted them to draft other players (or thought it was foolish to pass on Fultz) at the time...especially the Brown pick because he came off of a nothing-too-special year at Cal...and there were a lot of people totally sold on Josh Jackson as well and thought they made a mistake taking Tatum over him.

Boston was taking Tatum at 1.01 even if Philly doesn't make that trade. I forget who leaked it after the draft.

For roughly the last decade teams have just been handing the Celtics this team. I hope they send gift basket to the following.

Spurs for Derrick White
Nets for all the picks
Lakers for the way they draft
Bucks for chasing stars
Blazers for trading Jrue where he wanted to go
Wizards and Grizzles for the sign and trade for KP

Lastly and most importantly the 76ers. There just too many things they did to help the Celtics. They probably should get a championship ring that just says THANK YOU!!!

Yes...that has always been the rumor...they ended up getting the Kings pick which looked like a heist but the Kings were actually pretty good the following year so the pick wasn't as high as projected when they made the deal.

In hindsight, that had to be one of the worst NBA trades ever.
As a Celtics fan, you could see Pierce and Garnet were about done.
Even tho Brad Stevens put the final thumbprint on this team, that Danny Ainge deal to get those draft picks (and drafting Tatum and Brown) will be a feather in his cap forever.
Could you imagine that trade not happening and the Celtics having Pierce and Garnet for a couple more seasons, ...while the Nets acquire Brown and Tatum?
... We might be celebrating a Brooklyn championship right now.

Yep, although that pick was Romeo Langford who was the one young guy with some potential still that was included in the Derrick White trade

Langford and Aaron Nesmith morphed into the same person to me although Nesmith seems to have figured things out since he went to Indiana.

Oh my :lmao:

@wojespn

ESPN Sources: After one season, the Detroit Pistons have dismissed coach Monty Williams — who leaves with five years and $65M-plus left on his deal. New President Trajan Langdon will move to make his own coaching hire now.

Surprises me. Not that he didn't deserve it - he was terrible. But that's a lot of money to walk away from.

He's not walking away from any money

Sorry - I meant that's a lot of money for Gores to spend on someone who won't be the coach. I worded that incorrectly.

Really figured he'd give him another year just based on the contract.

For Gores it is nothing. It is like one of us taking our keys out of our pocket and a twenty dollar bill falls out and blows away.

Getting good picks is one thing

Picking and developing the right players is another

Who's ready for the draft?

My mighty Spurs have teh 4th and 8th overall in what is considered to be a very weak draft, though I think the talent level is okay (just no top-end elite prospects). Not sure what the Hawks will do with the 1.01. I kind of hope they select Sarr, since I don't think he will boost win totals in 2025 - and the Spurs own ATL's 2025 #1 outright.

With the 1.04 I hope the Spurs select either Reed Sheppard or Stephon Castle (a lot of people want Risacher, but please no - dude looks mild and pedestrian). Would not mind Buzelis and his Tom Chambers vibes here either.

For the 1.08, I think the Spurs are locked in on Tidjane Salaun. I just read a report that he *cough* sprained his ankle during a workout for the Spurs *cough*, which I interpret to mean "wrap it up, we want this guy," although Portand or Charlotte might conceivably draft him at 6 or 7 (depends on whether they see Giannis like upside when squinting at his highlights). Dillingham is also a possibility here, but I'm not onboard with his 165 pound frame. I'd rather pick Devin Carter instead. I could also live with dart throws at Cody Williams, Ron Holland, or Dalton Knect here (in that order).

I might have mentioned previously, but if the Spurs walk away from the draft with Castle and Cody Williams (Jaylen Williams' brother), it might set in mothion a great rivalry with OKC for n the next 10 years (Wemby vs Holmgren, SGA vs Castle, and bro vs bro), unless OKC continues to follow their established blueprint of shedding tier 1 players.

He was clearly just showing up for the paycheck.

Necessary move by Trajan, and good that the owner was willing to eat the contract.

To hell with the haters*!

18 CHAMPIONSHIPS!!!! GO CELTICS!!

*except Laker haters, you guys are alright in my book

Wait, you're a Manchester United and Celtics fan?

Maybe I need to start rooting for City.
Wait until you find out about me being a Dodgers fan too.
Damn, this whole time I saw your avatar name I thought you were a Dallas fan.

Dodgers?! Oh god. Cowboys too?
Nah, Chargers. Had to have one disaster of a team in the list, and the only home team since I grew up in San Diego (which makes this list even more fun to explain)

@Capella ready to fire up the thread for next season?

This one should be reserved for reveling in the beauty that is the 2024 Boston Celtics championship. All of the comical moves and plans other teams make to try and catch up to the new dynasty should be in next year's thread. 😏
Yup. Probably tomorrow. Make your time.

anyone named dragon is cool just how it is take that to the bank brochachos

This came up the other day, so I looked into it. When the Lakers won their 17 titles, the average number of teams in the league was 21.8. In the 18 Celtics title seasons, the average number of teams in the league was 14.8.
Amazing that the Lakers weren't able to eek out any championships when the league was only 8 teams deep. Pathetic showing by that franchise in the 60's.

That's the one nice thing you can say about Tom Gores - he doesn't pinch pennies with the Pistons. He wants to win and is happy to throw money around.

Everything else about him is the worst.

Well, Boston won 9 of the 10 titles in the 60's . . . so they kind of cornered the market. I forgot that the early Lakers titles were in their Minneapolis days (49, 50, 52, 53, 54). I'm not that much of a league historian when it comes to basketball, so not really sure why the number of teams in the league fluctuated so much (I assume it was a financial thing). Those 5 Lakers titles came when there were 17, 17, 10, and 9 teams in the league. Nine of the C's titles came when there were 8 or 9 teams in the league.

I'd put the 60's Celtics in a similar category as the 60's-70's UCLA teams. The Bruins won 9 titles when there were only 16 teams in the tournament. (They won the first tournament with 32 teams in 1975.) No doubt they had some great teams, but they got a bye and skipped Round 1 in each tournament. At that time, they limited who made the tournament by only allowing one team per conference, and a lot of the best teams didn't even play (went to the NIT because they did not have at-large bids then).

The Fool Monty!

Kudos to management admitting the mistake now and cutting bait.
----------------
In draft news, Terrence Shannon Jr. found not guilty on his rape charge. Should move him into the first. Think he'll be a very good day 1 contributor that'll be underdrafted IMO due to his age (will be 24 next month). Will thrive in transitional wide open nature of the league.

This draft class lacks a lot of high end talent but I believe there's a bunch of immediate contributors in it.

Probably doesn't mean much, if anything (and may be dependent on strength of opponents) . . .

Celtics with JT playing: 407-219 (.650), +5.7 net rating
Celtics without JT playing: 21-20 (.512), +3.5 net rating

Celtics with JB playing: 421-243 (.634), +4.9 net rating
Celtics without JB playing: 69-34 (.670), +6.1 net rating

Can we stop talking about the Celtics now? It's been like forever since that Finals game.
