Joe Milton sitting out whatever bowl game he is in now. For what? To protect his XFL draft stock? It’s really over for the bowls.
On the one hand, it's nice that we've finally dropped the pretense of the noble scholar amateur athlete thing and accepted that college football is a business like any other, with players getting paid along with the schools making as much as they can.

On the other hand, without that going for it, it now amounts to just semi-pro ball for the casual observer (as opposed to the serious business alums and students). An average college games is a vastly inferior product on the field compared to an average NFL game. I had little motivation to watch it back when there was at least an air of "the players are just college kids who care way more than pros do" - now there's almost none.

Division 3 is where it’s at.

My son will be playing D3 football next year. Really looking forward to watching his journey.

Is Barry Sanders hurting for money? He's been on this Louisville broadcast for a while now, just had that documentary (which wasn't great IMO), etc. To have been gone for so long and then suddenly showing up a lot is weird. (He's very likeable so I hope it's not $$ issues.)

Have you ever seen his ads for a weird hardware store back in the day (post-NFL retirement)? I think they were with his dad. Only ever saw them aired in WY. Think he was hard up for money even back then

Also, oddly enough, Oklahoma St. is playing in Texas, in a different bowl.

Sanders has always been the total opposite of being a big spender, took him years starring in the NFL to spring for a new car, teammates called him a cheapskate. Always lived well below his means and stayed out of the public eye until recently when he's started to do more appearances and ads. According to this site he's worth 8 million.

Big ACC matchup with Boston College and uhhh SMU today.

I think I've watched all of 10 minutes combined of bowl action this season, mostly because I gave up gambling on college football but also because these games just look so uninteresting and blah. On Tues I was having lunch with @DiscoStu and Bowling Green was playing Minnesota. Like, what on earth are those two teams doing in a bowl game?

But I am looking forward to Arizona/OU and I MIGHT have found a way to wager on this one. :oldunsure:

Looking forward to NC State vs. Kansas State in the Pop Tart bowl. NC State will be playing without the best defensive player in college football this season, Payton Wilson, but Kansas State is missing its starting QB, who entered the portal.

The guy K-State is rolling with is arguably better than Will Howard.

Dude is really, really good.

Smu leaving the AAC where they would’ve been a playoff contender to join the ACC where they won’t be, just to join the ‘power 5’ in a conference that won’t exist in 10 years was certainly a decision.

Yeah, see......I grew up 2 miles from SMU and have learned over the years that the people in charge there are, how to say.......dumb. More money than sense. Lucky sperm clubbers who just don't make great decisions for their progrum.

I went there so I'm a little biased but probably their best option since money wasn't the driver. They've always had a bit of a complex since the once great SWC disbanded and they got stuck in "lesser" conferences. Unlimited budget, Power 5 and Dallas market will surely help them them recruit in a legal pay to play model. They sure were pioneers in the 80s when SMU players had to take a pay cut to join the NFL. I'm thinking they try to poach Deion from Boulder in 2024/5.

I'm fortunate enough (and old enough) to have seen Dickerson and James play for them. Dickerson was just a beast of a back who tore through defenses like a man running through children.

My sis went there, so I should be kinder. Fun place to party for sure.

Wish I could've been part of those years. I was stuck in the post death penalty era when we could barely muster a few wins and football games were something we were almost forced to attend....Glad I went there though. I wasn't part of the old money network but great business school, fun social life, beautiful women and good networking.

Was that when Tom and Mic Rossley were there? I graduated with Mic and I think he was like 3rd in the nation in receiving one year. Played QB for us. Good dude. Usually stud athletes can be jerks but he was a super nice guy.

That might have been just before my time. Ramon Flanigan was the QB and also a really nice dude. Football players weren't that big of a deal on campus and pretty humble for the most part. Women lusted after dudes in certain fraternities instead. Crazy how much greek life ran that school.

Yeah, I was a lifeguard at the DCC for a few summers and worked with a bunch of SMU students - a few from their dive team. They were older and let me tag along to their parties. Some of the greatest summers of my life.

I live across the street! You'd think NIL was SMU's chance to take allllllllll the money and immediately field a top tier team.

The next hot button topic: Will players opt out of the CFP starting next year when it goes to 12 teams?
More games = more chance of injury. I expect that, yes, more will opt out. My sense is there's a generally positive aura around a final bowl game (although that seems to be fading for all but the CFP *). But when it becomes a couple of games, it seems that will be more of a grind. Players can rightfully say: Show me the money.

* I just saw a post on FB that the OSU sold less than two-thirds of their ticket allotment for the Cotton Bowl.

If you are a CFP 5-12 seed you could play 17 games. That’s an nfl season. That’s insane!
