2023 Philadelphia Eagles - Complete waste of a season finally comes to an end. (2 Viewers)

Elliot missing that short fg didn't help either
Didn't really have an affect unless the eagles would have run the ball on 3rd down and punted instead up 5.

I disagree. Not only did we not get the 3 points but that's a gut punch and gave them nice field position. Not the biggest mistake but it hurt
and ABSOLUTELY it would change the mindset on that late third down play. There's a huge difference between being up 5 and being up 2

I said in the game thread but lane hasn’t allowed a sack since 2020. He is the most important player on this team outside of Jalen. He basically nullifies the right side of the defense. Him being out for four+ weeks is going to cost us the 1seed. This is devastating news.
San Fran had a few major injuries as well today. Why do you think the one seed is gone? Who else in the NFC has a legit shot at 1?

I agree. Still right there for the taking
well 7 of the next 8 games are against teams with winning records, including Miami, Buffalo, KC, Dallas twice, Seattle, and San Fran. The one losing opponent is Washington, who always plays the Eagles tough. Realistically Philly will need at least 5 of those to be wins, including (most likely) the SF game. Schedule was rough as it was, it really hurt to let one like this slip away.
After the supposed cakewalk of 2022, this is the most brutal stretch in the league this year

As a Dolphins fan I'm disappointed that you guys lost that. I liked our chances better when we were going to be trying to defend the 72 teams honor and make sure no one goes undefeated and the Eagles were maybe a bit overconfident. Now I fear we get a refocused Eagles team to go along with a revved up Sunday night crowd.

So to recap, instead of making ZACH WILSON beat you from deep in his territory with less than a minute to go with no timeouts when your defense has been dominating, you throw on 3rd down. Makes sense
Sometimes coaches can't see the forest for the trees. That's why an assistant needs to speak up and say something.
You can't run the ball there and hand the ball back to the Jets only up 2 points. That's awful football. You have to trust your QB to not throw a pick in that situation, but the play call needs to attempt to pick up the first down.

That's why I said in the game thread, a roll out with a run/pass option is what I would have called. Or maybe a screen, if the Jets sniff it out, then Jalen just tucks and runs. The important thing there was to make the play call "safe" and keep the clock running. Having all your guys run 10 yards down the field and have to throw into a zone defense isn't favorable.

Definitely overlooked jets in anticipation of the dolphins game in prime time

Don't think they overlooked the Jets. When Lane Johnson isn't in there, the Eagles always have difficulty on offense. Driscoll was getting beat like a drum on a regular basis. It caused issues in the passing game. Then instead of trying to slow the pass rush down by running, the Eagles OC decided that throwing 45 times would be a better option. Brian Johnson better figure it out quick because we're coming to the portion of the schedule where the Eagles can't get by on talent alone.

yeah, lot of talk about it today. I do trust Siriani with his calls and making some of these decisions. If Hurts doesn't make that ill decision it would have been looked at just fine

Just an overall terrible game, other than the defensive line. Turns out losing Shane Steichen and replacing him with a rookie play caller is going to be our Achilles heel all year. Just inexcusable once Lane Johnson went out that we didn't at least TRY to alter the game plan. This Jets team was ranked in the bottom of rushing defense in almost every category. But it seems their eyes were lit up once they saw all the DB's injured and out for the Jets. Just a terrible game-plan overall, they definitely thought they had a "gimme" game here and didn't properly prepare the offense. Situationally, with the way the defense was playing, having Hurts drop back and pass almost the entire 4th Quarter was just plain ridiculous. There is no way they should have been calling pass plays leading up to the last INT. I DO NOT CARE if they were stopping it at the time. You bleed the clock out and force Zach Wilson and Co. who were 2 for 11 on 3rd downs and who we were getting consistent pressure on most of the game to drive the field. He did the same thing with the play calling on the TD to AJ Brown against the Commanders. Hopefully, this will be a gigantic learning lesson for him on how to operate and play call with Lane Johnson out and how necessary it is to bleed the clock out and get out with a W. This loss is way worse than the Commanders one last year that had 4 turnovers, with a few being "fluky" Is what it is.

On defense, its nice to see Desai shine honestly. He was experimenting with combinations in LB, and was forced to put literally every DB on the field that was active for the game at some point. Milton Williams looked real nice and Reddick you can say is definitely back. We are going to need the DL to carry us the rest of the way. Hopefully we get Brown, Slay, Carter and Blankenship back for this week, but I'm not sure about Reed. He has a rib injury and if its broken, that will crush the back end a little more.

All in all, crappy loss, crappier injuries. Need to figure some s*** real quick. A loss to an AFC opponent, so in the grand scheme, if we are to lose games, its better against the AFC obviously. But just a missed opportunity on many levels, especially with SF losing.

So many shocking plays in that game but this one takes the prize IMO.
the one that takes the proze for me was Smith dropping that wide open pass. I haven't seen him drop a pass that i can remember, and with him wide open it was pretty crazy to see.
Especially considering that not only was he not covered, there wasn’t a defender within 10 yards of him. Just a lot of garbage yesterday.

Not running the ball more was just an insane mistake. I get it that they had a bunch of backups in the secondary, but you know what? They played really well. Run defense is the Jets weak spot, so yeah, let’s abandon the run and when we do run let’s call Gainwells number a bunch.

I haven’t read all the comments so forgive me if this was all covered before But my impression is that the team was absolutely looking past the Jets to the dolphins and sat defensive players that probably would have been healthy enough to play but the team figured this would be an extra bye week. I brushed off all the criticisms of the previous games. Why not? We were undefeated. But man…some of the reasons for concern look legit and obviously we all know how much harder wins are without Lane. Maybe this all gets chalked up to “on any given Sunday“ (look at the Niners) but I’m normally optimistic but have to admit…I’m legit concerned moving forward at least until we know how long we will be without Lane.

100% feel the same way. They better freaking make sure they are prepared this week. B/c Miami offense is about 3x better than what we saw yesterday.

Watching that game- I have to say the coaching has been the biggest issue this year.

I don’t like the Fangio style of Defense, but I can’t argue with the successes we’ve had with it winning games. That aside, Desai is showing signs of life with the D. The injuries have hurt, a lot. He’s shown competence Gannon didn’t have at making adjustments in game.

The Offense has been adequate to miserable, which is inexcusable, given the talent. You have the best Oline in football? you’re running the ball better than anyone else? You’re playing a team that is soft against the run in a game on the road that you’re heavily favored with a back-up QB that’s a journeyman, at best? Of course you try and throw the ball 48 times! Seriously, I hope Siri and Johnson do some soul searching after this loss.

Offensive play calling has been mediocre all year. Yesterday, it cost them a chance of winning. I don’t know what the issue is but the plays take too long to get called in; half the time the entire Offense looks disjointed; Jalen has looked shook way too much, going off script and resorting to playground ball mode.

I think this team still will make the playoffs, but unless they find their identity- I don’t think I put them in the “elite” category this year. I’m definitely tempering my expectations of what they do this year.

Teams that are -4 on turnover differential over the past two years are 1-24. The fact that we were still in a position to win this game late in the fourth quarter is mind boggling.

Thinking on the interceptions.....
The last INT was terrible and totally on Hurts.
The other 2 seemed very flukish. Esp the one with goedart
It was the Washington game all over again from last year, but worse. Fluky INTs, an offense we were getting pressure on all day. But in the end, just could not overcome all the errors, including dropped passes (including the one by Goedert that led to an INT) as well as crappy playcalling/not reading the room.

Hoping the lessons were learned and we can move forward with this in mind.

Crappy games are gonna happen and you need to just expect them. We’ve been flirting with games like this a couple times this year already. The injuries put things over the top along with awful QB play.

The OC is gonna get all the blame because it’s hard to criticize Jesus Hurts but he played absolutely awful. He’s reverted back to the same poor habits from a couple years ago and it shows. He’s staring receivers down, late on a ton of throws and back to rolling to his right directly into pressure that wasn’t there.

The Jets defense was awful and than they were missing their starting CB’s. With our weapons and QB, attacking with the pass game would have been numbers 1, 2 and 3 on anyone’s game plan.

Even with all that said, even the best teams are gonna slip up. We need to get healthy in a big way in the secondary. It’s gonna take a strong second half run for us to get into the playoffs and a top seed.

He has to get the ball out quicker on the second one for sure. Had a ton of time and a clean pocket for a bit.

The last one was totally awful. How he doesn’t see two defenders there is beyond me.

He also could have been picked off 2-3 more times in that game.

I think Johnson has to take a lot of blame for Hurts’ regression. The okay calling hasn’t been good. I don’t think I’ve seen a game where they got a play off with more than 5 seconds left in the play clock. And the Offense just looks like 11 guys trying to figure it out on their own about 30% of the time.

Hurts has to take a lot of criticism, but it looks to me like he is trying to be a good soldier and turn chicken **** into chicken salad half the time. Just my opinion.

This is important. There were 3 other passes in my estimation that nearly got picked.

I’m not sure if running the clock down is by design or not. Hard to say.

What I can say is that you can’t see much on the broadcast but when you see the all 22 he has guys open. He made big strides from a couple years ago to last year. My theory is that he was more comfortable in year 2 with the same OC and processed the reads faster. It’s something to keep an eye on.

lots of great observations today about the coaching, lack of running game, game planning, and the biggest culprit for last night clearly being the Lane injury. Driscoll did not play well.

A bit of a redirection on Hurts, that spat between AJ Brown and Hurts in week 2 I think also is huring Hurts' decision making process during games. Admittedly I may be seeing what I wanna see, and I have Brown on my fantasy roster so I love the stats, but since that day, the target spread is skewed too much to Brown:

Wk1 10-10
Wk2 6-5 Brown (Thursday night game where the spat happened)
Wk3 14-5 Brown
Wk4 13-9 Brown
Wk5 8-5 Brown
Wk6 11-9 Smith

I been noticing since then Hurts is locked into one side of the field too often and that can't be good with so many other weapons who may be open elsewhere. I just assume it's in his head right now and Hurts needs to do some soul searching of his own and get back to doing what we know he can do.

There’s definitely some of that as well. The QB, WR and OC may be too close of friends.

he target spread is skewed too much to Brown:

I agree with all of this but Devonta Smith played the worst game I've seen him play since he came into the league.

Now if some of that is due to pressing a little because of lack of opportunities earlier is something people can debate but as someone way more invested in Devonta then AJB in fantasy I got to admit this particular week I think they tried to hard to get Devonta going at the expense of feeding AJB and it cost them a game.

Some good news. Lane Johnson injury doesn't sound to be a long term thing. That said, I wouldn't be surprised if he's out till after the bye. Maybe he pushes it for the Dallas game but I see them being cautious to have him for the rest of the year.
Per Schefter its a lateral ankle sprain. Reading the tea leaves, he may miss the next game, but considering his past toughness, that might be it, if at all.

Might cost us the division. The next 4 weeks without Lane are gonna be brutal.
It was a tough loss but nobody goes undefeated. You guys still have a great team with or without Lane.

I think these guys were smelling themselves a bit too much the last few weeks. This is a reality check and shows where the team needs to work on. When you win these holes kind of get covered up because all anyone sees is well we won.

I think the eagles are going away from what made them good/great. Run first with RPO/PA. Hurts and this team isn’t a throw it 45 times a game like a brady, rodgers,Herbert,Allen or Mahomes team.

I saw a lot of plays BJ was running similar to his Florida days. Richardson/Trask/Hurts are all completely different QBs. Call what makes them successful and stop trying to do stuff they can’t or aren’t successful

Jets game plan looked similar to what TB did to hurts in the playoff game by.

The bolder is my biggest issue with some fans and media. Can’t seem to criticize Hurts. I don’t know what’s wrong right now but I remember saying something in the first two weeks and that it wasn’t anything to worry about.

I’d like for them to fo back to what they did last year and see if that helps. If not we might be in some big trouble

Yep ever since AJ pouted on the sidelines it seems let’s force it every game to him.

Let’s hope he doesn’t rush back too soon. He did that with the last ankle injury and it lingered for almost a year

i don't hear much talk about it, but Fangio becoming the DC for the Dolphins has to have the Eagles a bit nervous. He knows the Eagles offense up and down the roster, and i am sure knows where to attack the Eagles.

Greetings Philly fans, I will probably fire up the game thread ealier in the week since we have a couple of 5-1 teams, this should be a Playoff level game
You have 2 of the Top 5-10 teams in the NFL, some would argue this is a possible Super Bowl match up.

Miami's defense is woeful at times so I don't take our Phins quite as seriously as others do but I certainly can see we have the best offense we've had in a very very long time.
Much like you all we've had some major injuries in the Secondary and feel like we might be stronger later in the season, missing a starting Left Tackle, Starting RB
But for once Miami has some depth to go to. I do worry about Tua on the road on artificial turf with that DL you all have, doubt he will have a lot of time to throw

Good luck this week, looking forward to some spirited banter and hopefully decent weather, looks like storms coming thru Saturday
Sunday Night it could easily be in the lower 40s

Seems like a high scoring fun game. really looking forward to it as an eagles/bama fan. Hurts, tua, Devonta, waddle, etc. its like getting together with old friends.

Should be a good game, not feeling super great about it. Not sure how good your guys' offensive line is, but it does seem pretty good at least. Feel this is a game that will be won/lost in the trenches. Will see if we can keep Hill to under 150 yards

Fully expecting this go down as the "Kelly Green Massacre" that puts a stink on the long-awaited alternates. The ghost of Buddy Ryan will make us pay for midnight green :P

The offense kind of seems like, "Let's force feed the guy that complains on the sidelines".
Yep ever since AJ pouted on the sidelines it seems let’s force it every game to him.
And wasn’t that a game they were winning easily?
Yep
