2023 Philadelphia Eagles - Complete waste of a season finally comes to an end. (5 Viewers)

I’ve seen Nolan Smith mocked to us several places, and seen him picked here by a few people.

I know his comp is Hasaan Reddick, any concerns about his size at the NFL level? Don’t watch much college ball, so enlighten me, please- is he that much of a standout talent that he overcomes being light?

What a win win on this deal

Hurts cap numbers

2023: $6.15 million
2024: $13.56 million
2025: $21.77 million
2026: $31.77 million

Even without knowing yet the cap hits in the 4th and 5th years (and maybe beyond with void years that help spread the signing bonus out), just HAVING those years to push a bunch of the spend into when the cap will be about $150-$180M more than it is in 2023 is a major win.
So, the full Hurts contract details are out. Albert Breer gives a good breakdown here, but for those last 2 years we were wondering about:
  • 2027: $51M
  • 2028: $51M
But, those years can each be paid in one of two ways:
  • 2027: A) $46M base with $5M option bonus OR B) $50M option bonus with $1M base
  • 2028: A) $41M base with $10m option bonus OR B) $50M option bonus with $1M base
Basically gives them a chance going into each of those years to decide if they want to move on from him and take most of the cap hit for what he's owed in that season (Option A) or move forward with him and spread the cap hit into future years and keep his base low (Option B.) As a reminder, Option Bonuses are paid in full to the player but the team gets to spread out the cap hit.

Originally thought it was a proactively restructured contract but it's more like a contingently proactive restructuring. It's pre-restructured for the Eagles to either opt-in on the already set restructure, or not. Or, they could just re-do the whole thing prior to 2027.

Bravo to Howie getting this deal done and structured the way it is. A win all the way around.

Hasaan Reddick: 6'1", 237lbs

Nolan Smith: 6'2", 238lbs

I'm more concerned with Nakobe Dean's size than Nolan Smith.

I think there's a trade-up/trade-down scenario that involves both picks and LV, if the first 6 picks go a certain way:

Eagles move up from 10 to 7, LV moves down from 7 to 10
Eagles move down from 30 to 38, LV moves up from 38 to 30
Should note: if we had won that game against NO last season, we already would be picking at 7

F'n Gardner Minshew.

He's a really good talent. UGA lost a some stars to the draft last year and he was an impactful player. He played in the SEC which is a very physical conference so if he can handle that he can handle his size in the NFL.

Saw a brief interview with Bijan earlier today on NFLN. Really like the kid. No RB is worth taking at the 10 pick, but I wouldn't be upset at all if we did....really think he's special and could be an all timer. Ideally we move back 5-8 spots to pick up more draft capital and he slips to us anyway.

I think the RB value pendulum has probably swung a little too far

True, but if Carolina didn't hit that last second come from behind FG to upset the Saints in week 17, we would be picking 15th!

#10 - Bijan Robinson. Howie does value positional drafting. I do think Howie also values overall player value. This isn't deciding between Bijan or Micah Parsons. It's my understanding that this is one of the weaker 1st Round talent levels in the past few drafts; particularly where the Eagles pick. Where would the Nolan Smiths/the Skoronskis/the Van Nesses have gone last year? Bijan, by my understanding, is also at a talent level that would be seen as "premier" in most drafts. Looking at the NFL.COM Scouting Report rankings(FWIW) for the past few years....he's only behind Zeke, Saquon, Leonard Fournette and Dalvin Cook in grade.

#31 - O'Cyrus Torrance.

and you could argue that all of those teams listed that drafted RB early never won anything. never even got close

A week ago I would not have thought it possible, but I'm coming around on them taking Bijon. I still think they trade out of 10 unless one of the top defensive players are on the board. But if they trade back and Bijon's still on the board, Howie may just take him. I still prefer a top D player though.

True. Up until the past couple years you could argue "You don't need a big time WR to win the Super Bowl then Tyreek HIll with KC, Both the WR's on Tampa's and Cooper Kupp was Super Bowl MVP. The real trend with winning anything with a high % is that you have a really really good QB. Trends are weird and not always a predictor of future success like "No NFC East team has won back to back division titles in the last 20 years"

I really would like this guy at 10 if the top T, Top 3 DL are off the board. I just don't see a lot of "blue chip" players worth the 10 pick this year.

True. I don't think that Van Ness, Skoronski or Smith moves the needle for the Eagles Super Bowl chances in the next two years though.

To me, that's the whole point. I dont' think anyone would say Bijan ISN'T blue chip. If, for some reason, one of the other blue chippers falls to 10...take them.

People forget ATL picks 7th and need a RB.

I honestly think people are overrating this guy a ton. I'm not saying he's not a good player but people are acting like he's a once in a lifetime talent. I've seen this take too many times in the NBA draft only for mist of those players never live up to that potential. He's also coming from the Big12 conference which IMHO is like an arena football league or backyard forrtball conference. Its not known for it's defense. If this guy came from the SEC or B1G conference or even the ACC I'd give a lot more thought to it. We also don't do well drafting players skill wise from the Big12. Hurts is an SEC player more so then a Big12 guy.

People are also forgetting ATL needs an RB. Yes people are mocking OL to them but in typical ATL fashion they usually go in the opposite of what people think. I could see them taking Robinson at 7 honestly.

And I just saw something on CSN Chicago that a Redditor who broke the DJ Moore CHI trade is now saying they've heard CHI is likely to take Bijan.

Either way my point is a lot of this Bijan talk could be all moot by our Pick tomorrow night

While I would love to see ATL take him ahead of the Eagles, getting the inside scoop on a trade is much different than finding out what players a team wants to draft. A trade involves the players directly along with the agent. Discussions happen outside of the organization, unlike a draft.

History of 1st round RBs (back to 1990) that went to a super bowl with the team that drafted them.

2022 Clyde Edwards-Helaire (2020) - 302yds 3 tds - Won SB
2018 Sony Michel - NE (2018) - 931yds, 6 tds - Won SB
2018 Todd Gurley (2015) - LAR - 1251 yds 17 tds - Lost SB
2009 Reggie Bush (2006) - NOS - 390yds 5 tds - Won SB
2005 Shaun Alexander (2000) - 1880yds 27 TDs - Lost SB
2000 Jamal Lewis - BAL (2000) - 1364yds 6 tds - Won SB
1999 Eddie George - Hou/Ten (1996) - 1304yds 9 tds - Lost SB
1994 William Floyd - SF (1994) - 305yds 6 tds - Won SB
1994 Dexter Carter - SF (1990) - 34yds 0 tds
1992, 93, 95 Emmitt Smith - DAL (1991) - 1713yds 18tds (92), 1486yds 9 tds (93), 1773yds 25 tds - Won 3 SBs

Additionally, I glanced through the 80's and 2 RBs went to a SB with the team that drafted them. Another nobody scrub for the niners and Marcus Allen.

to be fair, all those teams drafted those RB's to BE THE CORE of the offense and build around them. Eagles would be plugging Bijan on in to fill a role in an already tremendous offense.

I don't see the point of taking him, but I won't be upset if the Eagles do.
The point of taking him is that we would immediately be the best offense in the league. He would be BPA where we draft. And he fills a need. Anyone feeling like Penny can make up the 275-300 carries we got from Miles is fooling themselves.

Smoke starting to show the Eagles are trying to trade up for a DL on the twitters
Will Anderson is a grand slam pick
Is Anderson worth 1.10, 1.30, and 2.31? That's the approximate cost to get the ARI pick at 1.03. I don't expect him to go after 1.03.
What would it cost to move up from 1.10 to 1.08 for Carter? 2024 2nd rounder?
A 2023 3rd or a 2024 second would get it done.

Eagles will use a RBBC approach to the carries. Gainwell barely got any carries in the regular season and then in the playoffs was splitting carries 50/50 with Sanders. My best guess is the Eagles will use the same approach this season. Gainwell will get increased production from 53 carries in 2022 to ~175-200 carries in 2023. They're probably hoping Penny can stay healthy give them maybe ~125-150 carries. Boston Scott will eat up the rest.

It makes much more sense to get a defensive player and use a later pick on a RB than use the #10 pick on a RB and blow up your cap space budget on the position at RB going forward. Like I said, I don't see the point of doing that, but I won't be upset.

@The Noid

lol, i have no idea how this draft goes.

#10 - Howie can't find a trade partner Nolan Smith
#30 - Eagles trade down for draft capital, the 30th pick goes to Houston or Tenn and is for a QB. Will Levis if i have to make a call. Eagles trade down too hard to predict, but they get draft capital for this year and hopefully next and gain a pick in the 2nd round. If i am making a pick here i would say Eagles take Adetomiwa Adebawore or some DL or OL sometime in the 2nd

letters in name of last pick: 11

I would love one of the top defensive players and pick up a later RB or grab one off the scrap heap (Cook?). That's much more in line with Howie's usual M.O. But I admit I'm getting drawn in on the BiJan wagon.

Robinson might be the true #1 RB in the draft but Gibbs looks plug and play from day 1 with our offense scheme. The dude made Bryce Young look good.
i would rather them wait until the later rounds. Gibbs is certainly good, but Hurts doesn't check down to the RB a lot. I don't think the Eagles really need a pass catching RB since they have 3 top options to throw too already. add in Hurts ability to scramble, and i think a pass catching RB isn't a priority.

Yeah, me too. That's why I said I wouldn't be upset.
