2023 Philadelphia Eagles - Complete waste of a season finally comes to an end. (17 Viewers)

The reality is that it doesn't matter. You have no choice in your scheduling and the Ws and Ls add up the same regardless of the sequence. The Eagles will be in the playoffs and a tough out.

Yeah, there is no way that's correct.

We played KC where we were coming off a bye, but oh, so were they.
The next week we played the Bills on short rest since the KC game was a MNF game.
The next week they played SF where SF was coming off 10 days rest.
The next week the played Dallas were Dallas was coming off 10 days rest.

We played arguably four of the top 5-6 teams in the league, either coming off a bye/mini bye/extra rest, back to back to back to back. Spreading them out over multiple weeks, effectively limiting the amount of tough games against better rested teams in a row would have absolutely made a difference. Do we still lose to SF and Dallas? Maybe/probably but the idea that the way the schedule shook out had no impact is carazy!

OK, lets spread those games out and say Philly goes 4-0. Now since they were spread out you lose 2 of the 4 easy games before hand due to looking ahead and lose 2 of the 4 easy games afterwards due to victory hangover. Now you're 8-4 over those games instead of 10-2. I'd say the NFL did the Eagles a favor compressing all the hard games together making their already Cupcake* schedule easy as Pie*

Schedule is what it is but they didn't do the Eagles any favors. Most teams don't face multiple opponents coming off 10 days rest let alone 2 of the 4-5 best teams in the league back to back.

But that stretch is over now. If we beat Seattle, we're 11-3 and went 4-2 over that gauntlet. It didn't look pretty in those 2 losses but the NFL doesn't have style points.

Jalen Hurts has an expected completion percentage of 61.6% this season, the 2nd lowest in the NFL. Hurts is presented with the 2nd most difficult throws on average in the entire NFL. If you want to know how to fix the offense, start with finding some easy buttons in the passing game. Hurts Completion Percentage Over Expectation is +4.9%, the highest in the NFL, which says that right now the system is making it as difficult as possible on the playmakers and the playmakers are performing above what is expected.

So what are those easy buttons?
Throw the ball between the numbers - The Eagles are 8th in yards per attempt and 6th in success rate when throwing between the numbers, but they are 30th in % of passes thrown between the numbers. Life gets much easier for a defense when they don't have to worry about covering 60% of the field.

Running Back Screens - The Eagles are 4th in the NFL in success rate on RB screens but they rank 28th in usage

Slants - The Eagles are 7th in success rate on Slants but they rank 22nd in usage

Curls - The Eagles rank 1st in success rate on Curls but they rank 28th in usage

The Running Game
QB Runs - There are 10 teams with at least 10 designed QB runs (sneaks excluded). The Eagles rank 10th in success rate (36.6%) and 7th in EPA/attempt (-0.08) but they have the 4th most such runs. Either Jalen Hurts is healthy and can run through contact or he isn't. If he is, then use him. If he isn't, stop calling runs for him and zone reads for him to slide down behind the line of scrimmage.

Pony Personnel - The Eagles have the 6th highest rushing success rate in the NFL out of Pony Personnel (2 RBs on the field). They have the 2nd lowest amount of rushing attempts from this package. (They also have the 3rd highest passing success rate from Pony Personnel but are 18th in usage).

Run Blocking - The Eagles offensive line ranks 18th in blown block percentage over the last 4 weeks. The OL is too good to be that bad. At a certain point you just have to execute.

Stop Turning the Ball Over - The Eagles have fumbled 9 times in the last 5 games and thrown 2 interceptions.

The Bottom Line
The Eagles offense has star players all over the field, but they have used them as a crutch instead of doing everything possible schematically to put them in positions to succeed. Everything that has been off with the offense can be fixed and it needs to be fixed fast.

The offense has a nice schedule of defenses to get their swagger back and figure out some things before the playoffs, when they need to be full throttle to carry a defense that is much harder to fix (more on that later).

I was most surprised by the expected comp rate to actual. Shows how well Hurts is throwing the ball. Now you can still argue about him making the right reads, but accuracy is no longer an issue for him.

The Guy has the best Oline and WRS in the NFL yet somehow gets praised for putting up underwhelming QB #'s ... He threw for 22 TDs in his "MVP" caliber year ... 2 less than Daniel Jones rookie season playing behind the Worst Oline and WRS in the NFL ... I mean c'mon. He's on Pace for 25 TDs and 13 Ints and 5 fumbles lost ... still with the best oline and still with the best WRS and somehow he is still in the "MVP" discussion with guys that are on pace for 30 plus TDs and less ints on far worse teams!?!?!?

The Truth is Hurts is statistically a top 12 QB on easily one of the best teams in the NFL and all of his metrics are down this year.
If he was on a bottom 10-12 team he'd be a backup QB

Remind me again of actually what Daniel Jones stats were this year before he got hurt?

Dont worry about Jones ... The teams are night day. Jones got hurt because he was hit more than any QB in football up to that point.
You should be concerned with Hurts .., He's mediocre in the best possible situation and that's not going to last forever as we are starting to see.

So you are saying you are more concerned with the Eagles and their QB than your own team. That's hilarious. Tommy Devito has 8 TDs. If he gets 7 more somehow, it might be time to pay him $45M per year in a contract extension.

My team is 10-3. Our concerns are about how far we go in the playoffs and your concerns are "what do we do next to not be a bottom feeder"

Right...When no team has had an easier stretch of games then it's likely you'll have a hard stretch of games.

This is what I mean though. It's "easiest stretch ever" and "okay you had a tough stretch too". That stretch was vs 4 of the top teams in the league, all in a row, all 4 teams coming off extra rest. That was absolutely brutal and the toughest stretch anyone in the league has faced and it's not even close. But sure, let's keep having posts about how 'cupcake' their end of season was, from posters who didn't once mention how brutal that stretch was for them.

Please point out which of these teams you think were "cupcake" this year. I'll add context to each opponent to make it easier for you:

Week 1 @ New England. 1st game of the season. Mac Jones threw on us very well. 25-20 win - I'll say cupcake team looking at who they are now
Week 2 vs Minnesota. Kirk Cousins and Justin Jefferson were healthy for this game. Had a 27-7 lead, final score 34-28 . Currently a 7-6 team without Cousins and JJ majority of this year. Not cupcake
Week 3 @ Tampa 25-11 win. Currently 6-7 leading their division looking to make the playoffs. Not a cupcake
Week 4 vs Washington. 34-31 Had to be taken to overtime, and Sam Howell lit us up. Again he did the same the following game. Tough division win but I'll say cupcake
Week5 @ LAR. 23-14 win. Cross country road games are never cupcakes so just gonna say that. Rams currently 6-7 trying to squeeze into the playoffs. No cupcake for you.
Week 6 @ NYJ. 20-14 L Signature L against a cupcake team. Dominated them, but 0-4 turnover margin I'd wager NFL teams lose 99.9% of the time. Lost 20-14. We got cupcaked.
Week 7 vs Miami. 34-17 win, held their offense to 10 offensive points. Currently one of the top teams in the AFC. Not a cupcake
Week 8 Commanders. 38-31 win. Sam Howell went apes*** again on us, but we had a 34-24 lead until they scored a touchdown with 1:07 left in garbage time. Cupcake tho.
Week 9 vs Dallas 28-23 W. Tough game we held on. They are a top 3 NFC team. Not a cupcake.
Week 11. Beat KC in KC 21-17 on MNF. Never really happens, but people will say we got lucky against them. Mahomes ain't ever a cupcake win though.
Week 12 Beat Buffalo 38-34 OT thriller. Josh Allen and the Bills have lost * alot * of defensive players but they are still a tough out. Not a cupcake.
Week 13 Destroyed by the Niners. Worst loss of the season. Most on here believe they are the best team in the league so far from a cupcake.
Week 14 Beat the crap out of by Dallas in Dallas. Wasn't as bad as the Niners b/c the Cowboys aren't as tough a team, but it was bad.

So far, by my count I got 4 *cupcake* teams faced in 13 games. I would guess most teams in the NFL have faced as many *cupcake* teams or maybe more. Check Dallas' schedule for instance.

Feel free to tell me which of these opponents you would disagree our "cupcakes" other than the ones I mentioned here above.

And some argue to me and others in our team that despite playing a 1st place schedule, despite going 6-2 against current playoff or playoff adjacent teams - we really aren't that good of a team, are getting lucky and also the schedule truly isn't that difficult at all, that b/c some website said "per vegas its not that hard as we think* and the narrative that we coasted to a Super Bowl appearance last year, despite going toe to toe with the Champs until THE VERY LAST PLAY in albeit, a Super Bowl loss, that we got it easy. And pointing out the fact that we played the 2 toughest opponents on back to back weeks where *both* teams had rest advantages is some versions of *sour grapes* when we are just literally pointing at the fact that ya know, in a violent game like football where players go into recovery cold baths *immediately* after games to get their bodies right, is just plain and simple an advantage. If you want to know how to fix the offense, start with finding some easy buttons in the passing game. Hurts Completion Percentage Over Expectation is +4.9%, the highest in the NFL, which says that right now the system is making it as difficult as possible on the playmakers and the playmakers are performing above what is expected.

So what are those easy buttons?
Throw the ball between the numbers - The Eagles are 8th in yards per attempt and 6th in success rate when throwing between the numbers, but they are 30th in % of passes thrown between the numbers. Life gets much easier for a defense when they don't have to worry about covering 60% of the field.

Running Back Screens - The Eagles are 4th in the NFL in success rate on RB screens but they rank 28th in usage

The Bottom Line
The Eagles offense has star players all over the field, but they have used them as a crutch instead of doing everything possible schematically to put them in positions to succeed. Everything that has been off with the offense can be fixed and it needs to be fixed fast.

The offense has a nice schedule of defenses to get their swagger back and figure out some things before the playoffs, when they need to be full throttle to carry a defense that is much harder to fix (more on that later).

I mean I get what you are saying but they aren't a bad or mid team they are very good, despite the fact they haven't played anybody worth a damn for the most part on their schedule. But thems the breaks, you can only play who is on your schedule. They got 3 games in a row coming up against winning teams 2 of which the Eagles beat (bc their fans *LOVE* telling me how they beat X team by Y amount when we only beat X team by Z amount) where they will get a chance to really prove themselves in Buffalo (mid team with Great QB), Miami (also potential fraudulent team that hasn't beat anyone of note this season) and the Lions (who are flailing and losing to I guess Cupcake teams lol) and then they finish against the Commanders where I expect Dak to be bombing on them up 21 with 6 minutes left like the last game.

This is correct. If we lose one of the divisional games we are screwed though. The MNF game will be the toughest of all of them but lol Tommy Devito also is on a hot streak. The Cardinals are giving up the 3rd most points per game (right in front of the Eagles by 2 spots lol) and they have Kyler playing who....doesn't look great but is better than what they had earlier this year.

How to Fix the #Eagles Offense

The Passing Game
Jalen Hurts has an expected completion percentage of 61.6% this season, the 2nd lowest in the NFL. Hurts is presented with the 2nd most difficult throws on average in the entire NFL. If you want to know how to fix the offense, start with finding some easy buttons in the passing game. Hurts Completion Percentage Over Expectation is +4.9%, the highest in the NFL, which says that right now the system is making it as difficult as possible on the playmakers and the playmakers are performing above what is expected.

So what are those easy buttons?
Throw the ball between the numbers - The Eagles are 8th in yards per attempt and 6th in success rate when throwing between the numbers, but they are 30th in % of passes thrown between the numbers. Life gets much easier for a defense when they don't have to worry about covering 60% of the field.

Running Back Screens - The Eagles are 4th in the NFL in success rate on RB screens but they rank 28th in usage

Slants - The Eagles are 7th in success rate on Slants but they rank 22nd in usage

Curls - The Eagles rank 1st in success rate on Curls but they rank 28th in usage

The Running Game
QB Runs - There are 10 teams with at least 10 designed QB runs (sneaks excluded). The Eagles rank 10th in success rate (36.6%) and 7th in EPA/attempt (-0.08) but they have the 4th most such runs. Either Jalen Hurts is healthy and can run through contact or he isn't. If he is, then use him. If he isn't, stop calling runs for him and zone reads for him to slide down behind the line of scrimmage.

Pony Personnel - The Eagles have the 6th highest rushing success rate in the NFL out of Pony Personnel (2 RBs on the field). They have the 2nd lowest amount of rushing attempts from this package. (They also have the 3rd highest passing success rate from Pony Personnel but are 18th in usage).

Run Blocking - The Eagles offensive line ranks 18th in blown block percentage over the last 4 weeks. The OL is too good to be that bad. At a certain point you just have to execute.

Stop Turning the Ball Over - The Eagles have fumbled 9 times in the last 5 games and thrown 2 interceptions.

The Bottom Line
The Eagles offense has star players all over the field, but they have used them as a crutch instead of doing everything possible schematically to put them in positions to succeed. Everything that has been off with the offense can be fixed and it needs to be fixed fast.

The offense has a nice schedule of defenses to get their swagger back and figure out some things before the playoffs, when they need to be full throttle to carry a defense that is much harder to fix (more on that later).

I was most surprised by the expected comp rate to actual. Shows how well Hurts is throwing the ball. Now you can still argue about him making the right reads, but accuracy is no longer an issue for him.

Yeah, but "some people" still won't give him credit. This shows it wasn't a one year fluke.

The Guy has the best Oline and WRS in the NFL yet somehow gets praised for putting up underwhelming QB #'s ... He threw for 22 TDs in his "MVP" caliber year ... 2 less than Daniel Jones rookie season playing behind the Worst Oline and WRS in the NFL ... I mean c'mon. He's on Pace for 25 TDs and 13 Ints and 5 fumbles lost ... still with the best oline and still with the best WRS and somehow he is still in the "MVP" discussion with guys that are on pace for 30 plus TDs and less ints on far worse teams!?!?!?

The Truth is Hurts is statistically a top 12 QB on easily one of the best teams in the NFL and all of his metrics are down this year.
If he was on a bottom 10-12 team he'd be a backup QB

But he’s a starting QB in this league. I just don’t think he’s the type of qb who makes scrub players around him better. I think he’s top 15 on a bad team and maybe Neal’s into the top 10 convo depending on the coach and scheme.

This puts into stats what I've felt all year. Our talent is carrying the team over the play calling.

How in the world does Swift have only 45 targets the whole year? He's 16th among RBs in targets behind guys like Stevenson, Ford, Tyjae ****ing Spears. Why would it not be mandatory to fit a Swift screen pass into the game plan every week?

Why have we gone away from the AJ slant? I bet if we looked at his 6 week, 125+yd run, we'd see a bulk of our slant yardage for the year was to him in those 6 games. It's an unstoppable play.

Why are all the routes 10+ yards down the field? Also very little motion and crossing action. It's all vanilla ****.

Johnson needs to really show something these last 4 games.

I was watching a pod and they showed a graphic that traced every AJ Brown route last week. Nothing but go routes down the sidelines and not a single route across the middle. Just mind boggling

It usually doesn't even actually work in Madden either.

The deep ball only works on certain plays but over use it and the defense starts to smarten up. the y lead option though with the right QB seems glitched and works like a charm constantly. Running that with Anthony Richardson and Randall is ultimate team is something else

Question for Philly fans...what happened to Penney this year? Thought this could be a sneaky good signing if he could stay healthy but he has been totally MIA.

Penny signed prior to draft then traded for swift on draft day. Penny don’t play special teams and teams hate using gameday spots on backups who can’t do that. I’d prefer them have traded agains well and signed someone to the PS or roster young who could grow and let Swift and Penny be like a thunder and lightening duo

Penny was signed before the draft and thought to be the main back of a stable. Then the Swift trade fell in their lap. No one predicted what the usage would be from there. Eagles didn't even seem like they were going to use Swift in week 1 but then Gainwell got hurt. Then swift blew up.

Penny unfortunately has been the odd man out. He's valuable in case of injury but doesn't play special teams like Scott so he doesn't dress each week. I would have used Penny and Swift as a 1-2 punch all year but I'm not smart like NFL OCs so what do I know.

that is a little interesting. Kind of suggests that the coaching staff doesn't feel the main issue was the team was just tired and worn down from that nasty stretch, but it might be a bit of effort or needing to know how to tackle and hold on to the ball better

Second half of the season they usually do a walk through on the first day (Wednesday’s in a usual week, Thursday’s for MNF). And then next two days are pads.

According to the team, Smith and Haason Reddick took their normal workload without helmets or pads on. So they were listed as full participants, which is apparently inline with the rules
