2024-25 NBA Thread: “you’ll never let me down like the team does” sad Heat fan says to giant pile of cocaine (42 Viewers)

It is what it is. I still think Brown is a better version of Marcus Smart but with more shot attempts. Brown is a better shooter, but their advanced metrics aren't that far apart.
A much better version. Smart has a career TS% of .516. Jaylen .570. Smart is a 32% three point shooter. Jaylen 36%.

Smart had a great 2 or 3 year run where his defense was superb. But these two really aren't all that comparable
I did say a better version of Smart. Brown is making $49.2M this year. Smart is making $20.2M. Player salaries are all over the map in the NBA, but is Brown worth nearly 2.5 times Smart?

Offensive / Defense Rating while on BOS: Brown 109 / 110 - Smart 107/107
WS / 48: Brown .105 - Smart .91
Total WS across 9 years in BOS: Brown 38.8 - Smart 33.2
Average VORP per year while on BOS: Brown 1.1 / Smart 0.84
Total VORP across 9 years in BOS: Brown - 10.4 / Smart 7.7

To add a comparison to that last VORP category, last season Jokic had a VORP of 10.6 . . . more than either of the BOS players have had over their entire careers.

Marcus Smart has appeared in 38 games these past 2 season. Brown 111. There is your 2.5 times better right there :)

Again, I am not a huge Jaylen fan. I do think that his perception around the league is quite high though and would he become available he would fetch several assets

They are so wildly different players. That is a bonkers comparison as they stylistically and skill wise nothing alike. While Brown is a very good defender, Smart was one of the better perimeter defenders of the post-00s basketball. Offensively, Brown is incredibly talented while Smart might have topped out as acceptable (like below average but good enough that you weren't worried about him on the court because he defense was so good) toward the end of his Boston-stay, but much of his career he has been one of the worst offensive guards in basketball.

This is the same Brown that just 7 months ago averaged 24/6/3 on .591 TS% while winning the Finals MVP (as debatable as that may have been). Brown was VERY arguably the best player that Boston had in the playoffs last year - I'd say it was nearly a 3-way tie between Tatum/Brown/White. Lowkey, the biggest difference between last year's Celtics an this years is White being a good rather than great player, not Brown.

Rockets win in Cleveland.

Amen The GOAT with 23-14-10 along with his usual elite defense. Winning. Basketball. Player. Dude is special.

Sure glad Portland drafted a super athletic guard who can't shoot instead of Amen.
I still really like Scoot. Obviously not as much as much as Amen who has the upside to be amongst the best in the game with what he brings on D. I think they've just got to go through the lumps with Scoot being 20 years old. He's a absolutely shown high upside flashes.

Portland is just a mess with what they're doing. Grant and Ayton are awful. Blazers have found out the same thing the Suns did....Ayton has no motor. Way too soft way too often. Makes zero difference on either end.

After the deadline, whether they're able to deal Grant/Ayton/Simons or not......Play Scoot. Play Sharpe. Play Clingan. You already know what you have with Grant/Ayton....not much. Still like pieces Blazers have...just let them play and go through their growing pains now. Give the 2nd half to see if Scoot can run the show. Particularly when they're looking at a top 10 pick with a bunch of very good looking guards in that window

Scott is definitely playing better of late; his shot is starting to fall.

Simons and Grant should be traded, but their contracts are terrible and the return isn't going to be palatable.

Now that the Blazers have started to win, they've played themselves out of the running for Flagg et al. Not sure that's the direction this team should be going but I think if you want the young core to improve, winning is the best formula for that.

I expect some vets to go at the deadline, the return will be distasteful and soon enough, some of their young studs will come down with mysterious injuries that keep them out of games after the ASB.

You follow basketball enough to understand that isn't how salaries in the league work.

This isn't graded on a curve where Jokic, SGA and a couple other guys get A's and you work your way down. If you are an All NBA caliber player or a young player with that potential then you get a max deal.

Timing is also a big part of these deals.

Upset to be a rising stars snub, Bronny sets career highs in points, rebounds, assists, FGs made, and steals tonight and gets MVP chants on the road in the process.
To be fair, this Wizards team might be worse competition than most of the G League teams he's used to facing.
Yeah it was a rough watch most of the second half.
I started feeling bad for the Wizards somewhere in the 3rd quarter. I'm trying to remember the last time the Wizards/Bullets were good since like Wes Unseld, and struggling.

Wathcing from a distance, it seems to me the narrative around Harden is changing and he's the one changing it. 35 years old in his 16th season and playing at an extremely high level, adjusting his role to fit team needs, busting his *** and destroying the historical tropes people have developed about him over the past several years.
Seems like we should wait until we see how things go in the playoffs before making grand statements about Harden's new lease on life.

I didn't mean to make a "grand statement." I don't believe I've ever made one of those and don't know anything about his lease on life.

It's crazy to think in most of our adult lives they've always been trash. Not even Jordan could save them. They did make the playoffs recently albeit with a losing record so I guess that's a start.

Is there a worse team in professional sports than Washington NBA over the last 40 years?

I'll do a deeper dive on Monday but this might be the choice.

Cleveland Browns? I mean, they haven't won anything, they left the city for awhile, and they haven't had a meaningful QB in the timespan.

Arizona Cardinals? Maybe they're a better answer for ever as they've at least been to a SB in the last 40 years and Fitzgerald is a HOF.

Sunderland soccer club?

Hate to say it, but have the Wizards been worse than the Timberwolves?

Just on the court/field probably not. If you add in off the field stuff, then the Clippers come to mind. They are competitive now, but they haven't won anything and the whole Donald Sterling era is pretty bad.

We have a trade:

Shams:

The Los Angeles Clippers are trading PJ Tucker, Mo Bamba, a future second-round pick and cash to the Utah Jazz for Drew Eubanks and Patty Mills, sources tell me and
@BobbyMarks42

Clippers get an upgrade in Eubanks and get out of the luxury tax. Utah gets a pick. Solid if unremarkable trade.

Seems like there would have been something better out there for the Jazz to take on dead salary like that.

It's dead money all the way around. Eubanks can maybe play some minutes, but nobody is giving up much of anything for him. Utah got cash and a 2nd to use their cap space. Seems like a fair deal

Lions are up there. The last 2 seasons don’t outweigh all the bad. At least the cardinals made it to a Super Bowl. Browns are definitely in the running

Mariners and Rockies in the MLB. Browns, Lions, Raiders, Jets in the NFL. Coyotes/Jets/Utah and Blue Jackets in NHL. Twolves, Wizards, Hornets in the NBA.

I would probably rank it 1. Browns 2. Mariners (did the least with the most too) 3. Coyotes/Jets 4. Lions 5. Wizards.

I think the Browns, Wizards, and Hornets are in a tier all alone. (I don't follow hockey at all so maybe missed some) All these other teams have been to conference finals and/or have had hall of famers in the last 40 years. I know those three teams I listed at the top haven't been to any conference title games and I don't think they had any hall of farmers.
