2024-25 NBA Thread: OKC - Memphis series moved to Quibi (55 Viewers)

Damn
The 2025-26 Boston Celtics payroll and luxury tax total is set to exceed $400 million once they fill out the roster.Tax rates are set to increase in deeper levels that season while the Celitcs are also set to enter the repeater tax.
How do they get out of that?

Trade someone?

Boston has committed something like $940 million to their current group of starters. Yes, they can always trade guys. KP would be the most likely candidate (or the guy they will chose not to bring back when his contract is up). With Porzingis having health issues and Al getting old, at some point they will have to be in the market for another defensive big that can also shoot threes. Personally, I'm not married to Porzingis (NTTAWWT), as you never can truly rely on him being in the lineup. Things broke well for them this year, but in an alternate universe, they could have to play Giannis, Embiid, and Jokic to win another title. If KP were out and Horford started showing his age, that could definitely be a problem.

Being way over the second apron probably isn't that big a deal to ownership if they are winning titles . . . more gate receipts from extra games, concessions, sponsors, commercials, higher ticket prices, etc. They likely made $2-3 million on road games in the playoffs with their sold-out watch parties at the Garden. As soon as they start slipping in terms of record or not advancing in the playoffs, that fizzles a quite a bit and the tax bill would become unwieldy. I think they are also banking on the cap going up by leaps and bounds.

The problem with the second apron though is it significantly limits the moves you make, especially if you go over it multiple times.

If they can win back to back titles, it will likely still be a net positive to their bottom line.

Orlando signed Goga Bitadze to 24/3 which is slightly above the room exception, meaning they are using cap space....

Also reports that they are going to use remainder of their cap to extend Jonathan Isaac.

Talked a big game and didn't produce. Now I know how my wife feels.
Just brought back Gary Harris too. They’ll be better with KCP and Paolo taking the next step but yea I was hoping for one other player too.

KCP/Harris covering 48 minutes with good shooting and excellent defense is pretty decent though.
I have no problem with Orlando not throwing money around just to do it. Remember Bismack Biyombo?

My problem is blocking minutes for Black and Howard. Those guys are lotto picks. Perhaps they suck and it is what it is, but I'd prefer their upside to giving minutes to Harris and Ingles (if he resigns), etc.

Bottom line, Magic are a good bit behind Boston and a step below Philly and NY. Probably on par with Milwaukee, Indy and Cleveland depending on factors. So 4 seed to play in?? Gulp.

I feel filthy even saying it, but this front office has actually earned the right to do what they want so I'll just shut up and watch

So after the first wave, who are the best players available remaining at each position?
Lebron :)

DeRozan, Hield, Bridges, Slo-Mo, Tyus Jones

I am surprised Slo-Mo is still available. He seems like a very good bench piece/5th starter for a contender.
He wants to stay in Minnesota so both sides are trying to figure out something that works. It was reported that they're pretty far apart though.

Excuse my ignorance; slow mo?
Nothing was worse than that Celtics big man who people gave an Avengers nickname to for some reason and then the 3 Celtics fans here just referred to him as that for a few seasons.
Timelord / Robert Williams?
In a world of LBJ, KD, CP3, and PG13 we could all use some much better nicknames. Right now NBA nicknames are right up there with pre-war baseball where everyone was either Whitey, Red, or Lefty.

During the Finals people even stopped using Tatum & Brown and opted for JT, JB, along with KP, etc. So when a nickname of such quality, with a hysterical backstory, comes around please embrace it. Robert Williams is Timelord.

Don't to take this away from basketball loving fans everywhere. Same with Kyle Anderson being SloMo or Anthony Davis being The Brow (not AD 🙄).

Stand up for this or live in a world of JE and GG. Or as we all know them... Dr J & The Iceman (Julius Erving & George Gervin).

Two of our National Treasures, wikkid and Doris Burke, embraced the TimeLord nickname and used it regularly. It was a great nickname and anyone that thinks otherwise can fight me.

Magic wasn't his real first name either.

Pretty sure I had a thread title while Wikkid was here that said something like ‘Celtics fans embrace TimeLord nickname hoping he can take them back in time to when they relevant’ or something like that, that he laughed at.

Anderson (slo-mo) signing with GS for 3/$27m. He’ll be signed and traded into the Klay trade exception.

Dallas sent two seconds to Golden State for Klay. Wonder if both those now go to Minnesota?

GS is sending a future second ( not specified which) and cash in the deal.
