2024-25 NBA Thread: OKC - Memphis series moved to Quibi (28 Viewers)

I am not a huge Tatum fan. But just heard on the broadcast that he has 4 consecutive years of 26 pts, 8 rebs, 4 assts. Only been done by Oscar, Giannis, and Kareem. That's good company

I have never seen a fan base hate a player that has brought them a title, won so much and been so good for so many years so much. It baffles me.

He seems like a bit of a dandy and he's not caucasian so those are two strikes against him in Boston

What is a dandy and wow.

Every time I see a Luka highlight for the Lakers I simply cannot believe what the Mavs did. Just an all-time disaster, seriously may go down as the worst sports trade ever.
Last night during the game they showed the photo of Luka and Brunson after they were both drafted by Dallas. Right before it Breen said something like, "if you are a Mavericks fan, you may want to look away right now."

Not sure about all that (plus I've never even been to Boston) but my only issues with Tatum have been his constant whining to officials and his hero-ball shot selection at times. Both of which he has improved on these last 2 years.

He's a legit superstar and a top 5-7 player in the world right now. Probably easily top 5 if you make durability/availability a major factor.

Amazing that in the same draft they got the best player in the draft at #3 and the third or fourth best player in the draft at #33...and then kind of gave them both away

They’re calling them Broncic now which idk man….funny for the rest of us. Dallas fans have to want to jump off a roof.

Yeah, but at least they got some major building blocks for Brunson.

Oh, wait. No.....

I love seeing Luka make the Dallas brass look foolish but hate it as a Rockets fan. LAL went from being an early exit bubble team to leveling up to the likes of OKC and DEN :kicksrock:

Whining and being a primadonna are definitely traits of a dandy....I was joking about the race card thing but since you've never been to Boston, for an east coast city in one of the most liberal states it has the reputation of being a racist town.

Depends where he lives... but if it's anywhere in the Eastern United States, major faux pas.

Did you guys see Lebron confronting and yelling at Steven A on the sidelines before the Lakers game? Pretty funny because it was all about Bronny. I'd hate to see him read this thread.

My Fandom is clearly within bounds.

I grew up and currently live in Southwest Missouri. The KC Kings left for Sacramento when I was 8. I went to college and subsequently lived in the St Louis area from 1996 to 2003 where there was no NBA team. Then I moved back to my hometown. I live equidistant from OKC and Memphis (4.5 hour drives), but never latched on to either team.

I have been a huge basketball fan since I was a kid and played in HS and college. I never found a team I loved and just enjoyed the sport and whatever game was on. However, I came to appreciate the 2-year run Brad Stevens had at Butler and became a big fan of him. When he was hired as the Celtics head coach, I became interested and started watching. At some point I went from curious observer to fan and have stayed with them since. About 2-3 years ago I realized I owned too much Celtics gear to deny and am officially a fan.

I am currently planning a NYC/Boston trip for my wife and I this summer, so I should be breaking the Boston seal soon enough.

I don’t even think it’s a “may” go down as HOF-level debacle. Unless Luka flames out in extraordinary fashion, and there’s no reason to think he will, this is already an all-time disaster.

Just unfathomable not only because of the sheer stupidity behind the lack of value in the package they received, but for how the deal would very clearly (for anyone with an ounce of common sense) be received by the fan base.

gross.

Giannis 6th youngest to 20,000 on Wednesday night. Needs to celebrate by going out for fish fry tonight.
Continuing the love / hate relationship with Tatum, he's probably going to end this season with right around 14,000 points, maybe a shade under (unless they sit him multiple games for rest). Over the past 4 seasons, he's averaged about 2,100 points. He just turned 27 four days ago. At a similar pace (with good health), Tatum would hit 20K sooner age wise than Giannis and Jordan. Tatum has a good chance to take over the #5 spot on the fastest to 20K list (MJ was 29 and 326 days). Tatum won't sneak into the top four spots unless he starts scoring at a higher clip. (Wilt was 29 and 134 days.) Oddly enough, even if he were to enter this list in the Top 5, detractors would still start the conversation with, "yeah, but . . ."

Even for someone choosing to root for the Celtics for some reason, I don’t see why there needs to be rules about who you can and can’t be a fan of. Cheer for who you want to. Life is too short to be miserable. Teams and players aren’t always loyal to each other, why should fans be the only ones locked into things.

Given scoring inflation, comparisons with players more than 10 years ago aren't worth much in terms of telling you about their relative scoring ability.

I don't think anybody in here is taking this seriously, just some good natured back and forth.

That said, I'm astonished there are fans of teams in cities they've never once stepped foot in before. That seems weird. I am not losing any sleep over it, but that's very peculiar, IMO.

Has any team ever picked a better "second best player we got in this year's draft" than Brunson?
Just tried both ChatGPT and Grok on this question. ChatGPT was pretty useless. Best player it came up with was Will Barton. Grok came up with some interesting ones - Horace Grant, Serge Ibaka, Jameer Nelson.

In any case, if that's it, then Dallas basically had the best draft of all time in 2018.

And 7 years later everyone from that draft is no longer on the team. Lol

2018 has to be one of the best drafts in a very long time.

Stole most of these off a reddit post. Golden State got Jason Richardson and Gilbert Arenas in 2001, plus Troy Murphy who was a 10+ year NBA player. OKC with Chet and Jalen Williams might eventually rank up there in 2022. Pippen/Horace Grant in 1987. Blazers traded for Brandon Roy and LaMarcus Aldridge together on draft day in 2006. Boston got KC Jones and Bill Russell in 1956.

He wasn't even a top 5-7 player on his own team last summer

Before most of us were born, the Celtics drafted Bob Cousy and Bill Sharman in the same draft and Bill Russell and Tom Heinson in another. Much later, the Pistons drafted Isiah Thomas and Joe Dumars in the same draft. All of those guys are in the HOF.

After further research, the Celtics also didn't draft Cousy and Sharman.
The Celtics didn't initially draft Cousy, but he refused to play for the team that drafted him (the Blackhawks), and he somehow ended up property of the Chicago Stags (who folded as a franchise). They held a dispersal draft, and Boston took Cousy. So technically, you are correct that Boston didn't initially draft Cousy (although he didn't play for another franchise before BOS).

I think Aldridge went before Roy too.

Man, I know Portland's had some really rotten luck with injuries to guys like Sam Bowie and Greg Oden, guys they were counting on. But Brandon Roy's dramatic fall off after injuring his knees was the most painful loss for this fan (and many more, I'm sure). It just sucked to watch him try and give it a go, but there was just NO cartilage left in his knees. He tried so hard to gut it out. What could have been.....

Don't have that excuse with Sharman. ;)

Interesting. I had you pegged as a MA resident but getting your butt kicked by a teenager was definitely a red flag. No self loving Bostonian would allow such disrespect.

What's this now??

Hoping to get off on a technicality, here.

From Bobby Marks:

Here is the hardship exception language.

The Mavericks would be eligible for multiple.

The problem comes with they are only $51K below the first apron and cannot exceed the threshold.

A 10-Day contract is $119,972.

2023 CBA

The “hardship” rules allow a team to obtain an additional roster spot (i.e., have more than 18 players under contract) during the Regular Season in the following circumstances: (i) the team has four injured or ill players under Standard NBA Contracts; (ii) the first three such players have been out for at least three consecutive Regular Season games due to injury or illness; (iii) the fourth player also has missed at least three consecutive Regular Season games due to injury or illness; and (iv) all four players will continue to be unable to perform playing services for a minimum of an additional two weeks.
