2024 College Football Thread: Ohio State advances to play unbeaten hypothetical SEC team (1 Viewer)

Thought about posting to celebrate the victory but both of the teams are just so bad that I figured it wasn't worth it.

Complete team victory for the Bulls today. I don't expect much on the season, my prediction was 4 wins, but they're playing better than I had expected at 2-1, with 2 blowout wins over weak teams and 1 blowout loss at Mizzou. I like this new coach Pete Lembo, he seems like he's got the program back on the right track after Mo Linguist left for the Alabama co-DC job.

Per Chris Low high end boasters have at Florida have gather 26m for Bill Napier buyout.

Per a source I know there team meeting tomorrow. Dan Enos looks to be interim coach rest of the way unless Florida hires someone not coaching right now. No word on AD Scott Strickland but multiple high ranking boosters want him out as well.

Was at Neyland tonight.

2 of last 4 opponents have been “ranked” and we’re 4-0 outscoring something like 200-13 in that span.

Not sure what the trend says but its been a fun time to hammer the Vols with/laying the points.

Congrats! That game was lost when UMass tried a 50-yard FG with a freshman down 7-0 rather than going for a 4th-and-4. Well ... that, and then the 107-yard INT return. Thankfully I was at a wedding and missed most of it.

It's only going to get uglier for the Minutemen, who still have to play Mizzou (at home, inexplicably), at Mississippi State and at Georgia (!). Oh, and at new CFP contender Northern Illinois.

Hopefully the move to the MAC brings a little more stability to the program. Things looked good at the start of last season, but the program hasn't been the same since Phommachanh injured his knee at Auburn.

Looking forward to this being a yearly thing again! 🤝

Man they have been impressive. Not looking forward to our trip to Knoxville.

I can’t believe that targeting call in the FL/AM game. He wrapped him up…..man I’m getting old
I saw this play as I was getting a haircut. Was this where the FLA player hit the dude in the air essentially in his butt, and they called targeting? Unbelievable.
Yep terrible call
Should be confirmed as correct. This was using crown of the helmet type of targeting. Old time spearing. Absolutely the correct call. The only foul that penalizes the player most likely to get hurt.

From the replay, it looks like the defensive player lowered his head and made forcible contact with the crown of his helmet. Are you seeing something different in that clip?

Can you explain it to me like I’m blind and can’t see the video? Do you not think it was the crown of his helmet? Do you not think he lowered his head before making forcible contact? Is it that his arms were extended? It appears to me that he makes contact with the crown of his helmet before he makes contact with his arms.

I could see the call going either way, but it does seem to be within the technical definition of targeting. The rule itself may be stupid in that regard (though I understand it’s there to protect the safety of the defensive player) but I don’t see it as a blown call so much as a possibly overly technical one that perhaps the crew should have employed a bit of discretion and let go.

It's hard when players change elevation like that, including when RBs and QBs drop their head on a run. You are correct that the language says using the crown of the helmet, but I typically think of that when they are using the crown against the opponent's head and shoulder area. Technically correct but didn't feel like targeting should be called there IMO.

Officials will talk about Rule 9-1-3 or 9-1-4 for targeting. 9-1-4 is defenseless players and the head/neck area.
9-1-3 is why this is a foul.

When attempting to make the tackle, the player's first contact was forcible and with the top of his helmet. The player did not see what he hit. He was looking at the ground.

Here are the sections of the rulebook that outline the foul.

Rule 9 Conduct of Players and Others Subject to the Rules
Section 1. Personal Fouls
Targeting and Making Forcible Contact With the Crown of the Helmet
ARTICLE 3. No player shall target and make forcible contact against an opponent with the crown of their helmet. The crown of the helmet is the top segment of the helmet; namely, the circular area defined by a 6-inch radius from the apex (top) of the helmet. This foul requires that there be at least one indicator of targeting (See Note 1 below). When in question, it is a foul. (Rule9-6) (A.R. 9-1-3-I)

Note 1. “Targeting” means that a player takes aim at an opponent for purposes of attacking with forcible contact that goes beyond making a legal tackle or a legal block or playing the ball. Some indicators of targeting include but are not limited to:
• Launch. A player leaving their feet to attack an opponent by an up ward and forward thrust of the body to make forcible contact in the head or neck area.
• A crouch followed by an upward and forward thrust to attack with forcible contact at the head or neck area, even though one or both feet are still on the ground.
• Leading with helmet, shoulder, forearm, fist, hand or elbow to attack with forcible contact at the head or neck area.
• Lowering the head before attacking by initiating forcible contact with the crown of the helmet.

If this makes the weekly training video I will let you know.

Cam Ward continues to raise his draft stock. Miami has a cake schedule. They should run table in the ACC if they keep getting better.

NC State meantime looks eeally shaky. McCall got knocked out but CJ (Freshman) came in and did a good job. I am disappointed though in how they look. They have not come together yet.

Per MaizeAndBrew: Michigan head coach Sherrone Moore told the media on Monday that Alex Orji would be starting at QB against USC on Saturday. Turns out the players weren’t filled in on the news until the media asked them for their thoughts. :lmao:

Curious move after Davis didn't throw a single incompletion on Saturday. Granted he only had 6 pass attempts with 3 completions and 3 interceptions. But at least the ball went to a player. Orji must have some great stats....ummm....well....maybe not...his 2024 Passing stats:
GAttCompPct.YardsYards/AttTDIntRatingAtt/GYards/G

Looks like Moore is going to double down on their rushing attack by adding a rushing QB. Makes sense. Why not go from a one dimensional offense to an ultra one dimensional offense? :lmao:

It actually makes sense. Historically, USC has sucked dealing with mobile quarterbacks.

Took me way too long to realize you were going back to the bowl game.

I think it’s going to continue for Tennessee this week, I like them to win by 20+ in Norman. Within my circle at least we are dreading this game. OU does have a lot of players coming back from injury, but we look like a fringe top 30 team and Jackson Arnold is just a guy. Heupel is going to really want this one too, his coaching stint at OU did not end well. It’s gonna be ugly.

OU has 5 of their next 8 against teams in the top 7. A few of those will fall back in the rankings (I’m looking at you Missouri) but it’s gonna be a rough 1st season in the SEC. 8-4 would be great at this point.

Why, yes, Arch Manning is the Golden Child. Why do you ask?
Golly he looked good. I think he may be faster than Ewers... at least it looked like it on that TD run.

Fortunately they just have Louisiana-Monroe (at home, cupcake) this weekend and then Mississippi State (at home as well) before a bye week and then the Red River Rivalry and UGA at home. Ewers will have time to heal.

Oh, you're new to the SEC, so let me help you. None of those games matter at all. The only thing that's important is your OOC schedule. You actually have a super easy schedule, but ESPN has conspired against the other conferences to make it seem like you have a tough schedule. Let me know if you have any questions.

I think that's fair about the old USC defense. But this year's USC defense looks like a different animal. I mean they have actually been playing defense this year. And it's been more than competent. Impressive even.

It's been said that Arch gets his athletic ability from his dad Cooper, a former D1 WR. Peyton said he gets it from his grandfather. :lmao:

If this makes the weekly training video I will let you know.
It did not make the National training video. The South Carolina/LSU horse collar and line stimming did make the video.

Not surprisingly, Arch Manning set to start for the Longhorns against the powerhouse Louisiana-Monroe.

I heard the LA-Monroe coach on ESPN say that a lot of his kids have played against Manning before... so

And even if your out of conference schedule includes 2 additional ranked teams, if the third one is an FCS team the other 11 games are forfeit and you automatically have the easiest schedule in the country.
