2025-26 NBA Thread: Chauncey Billups suddenly resigns to play minor-league baseball (9 Viewers)

The NBA playoffs have always been the most predictable in all the major sports. Need to be a top three team in your conference, have to have playoff experience to make a deep run or win it.

I am wondering with the second apron if it is going to bring more parity in the playoffs because you just can't keep everyone anymore.

Curry's going to get the headlines, but this was also the second straight start and and second straight excellent (for him) all-around, Warriors-style game for Kuminga. He's scored more points before, sure. Many times. But this is the best basketball he's ever played. The points and accolades will follow, at least that's Golden State's operating philosophy.

The narrative for the last 6 months or so has been who can they get for Kuminga because Kerr "doesn't like him." That's always been BS. Kerr's been pleading with him for four years to play D, rebound, and play within the offensive system. Now, at this late hour, that appears to be happening. The Warriors would much rather see him flourish like this and keep him. They've always said the potential was there, he's just been maddeningly obtuse and inconsistent (and for most of the the time, been a teenager).

It's probably ho-hum from a national perspective, but if the Warriors want to legitimately compete for a championship they need this to happen. The trade route was always sub-optimal and less desirable. They were never going to get a "starter on a championship-level team" talent back for him, but he is certainly capable of being that talent himself. Keep it up, Jonathan.

That aside, the Baby-Faced Assassin is still droppin' fools. There's nothing else like it
The Warriors looked great last night, but they are fresh and healthy.

Draymond, Butler and Horford all were key guys playing down the stretch of that game and not a one of them will likely play 60 games. I think father time will be their biggest obstacle this season.
i frankly cant believe they won that game i went to bed when they had cut it to 9 at half but they looked like they had no chance and denver was running them off the court and gordon had 6 ot 7 threes in the first half but man when you can shoot you are never out of a game i guess take that to the bank bromigos

Worst thing about being in the east or mid west. Great games on west coast, but I can't stay up for them.
agree 100 percent and the problem is that the west is really fun to watch this year and they are all late take that to the bank brochacho

I don't know, the Thunder are essentially the same team as last year. I think you just have to draft a couple of the key guys so you can lock them up with that rookie contract.

Maybe a good 5 year run is nearly impossible, but 2-3 year windows are still doable if you can hit on 2-3 draft picks in a row.

Details of the rigged poker games that Damon Jones and Chauncey Billups were involved (from the US Attorney press conference):
+ X-ray machines built into tables to read face-down cards
+ Contact lenses/glasses that read pre-marked cards.
+ Secret cameras in card trays

Got damn Chauncey
I just don't get this.

Why go to this elaborate of a scheme if you are already making millions? Just so stupid.

I think there is some kind of addiction to the adrenaline rush of it all. No longer playing after decades of competitive sports and maybe there is just some hole to fill?

Man, take up golf or bowling or something.

That was my first thought too, but if this is all mob connected, maybe they are being extorted and/or owe them money or favors from earlier in life.

None of this is possible if they dont read books!

And if the Feds offer you a plea deal, take it. Do NOT fight the Feds. My buddy learned that lesson the hard way.
What happened?

He ran a mortgage company that got busted underwriting loans to straw buyers. He fought the charges and the judge threw the book at him. 5 years federal prison and huge fine for wire fraud and bank fraud. Plea deal was significantly less time and less financial penalty as well. He was able to shave it down to 2.5 years by entering a drug rehab program. It was a minimum security facility FULL of financial hucksters. I went to visit and there were a couple guys in there during visitation that were on episodes of American Greed. Pretty surreal

We don’t know what his money situation is. He MADE millions but it could already be all gone. Especially if he is a gambler.
Many of these athletes in sports suck at money management. Think I heard awhile back over half the nfl players who retire file for bankruptcy or go broke in less then 5 yrs after playing career. These days the nfl has gotten manadatory financial classes for rookies on how to spend wisely, invest, ways to not get scammed, etc. it’s almost embarrassing how poorly many athletes deal with their finances
I’d be willing to bet that if you handed the average 23 year old 5 million he or she would blow it unwisely in a few years.

In other words, I don’t think this is an athlete issue but a “people in their early to mid 20s” are morons issue. The athletes just exemplify it on a larger scale.
If you handed me 5 million I would blow it unwisely in a few years.
Funny, I literally just got off the phone with a client in her late 60s who proclaimed that she cannot possibly live off the $5 million plus a nice home free and clear I negotiated for her in a divorce settlement.

Any chance you're a late 60s something divorcee in my jurisdiction? If so, please pay your bill.
Hot? Asking for a friend.

After I graduated from Michigan State, I came home and went back to school at Oakland University. I worked at a local bar that was also near the Palace of Auburn Hills where the Pistons play. Billups was one of the players that would come to the bar hang out with some of the regulars. It took a couple years, but he wore his welcome out and didn't ever come back to the bar.

I always thought it was odd that the best player on a championship caliber team wasn't mobbed when he came in, but then I would hear some of the rumors/stories and it kind of made sense.
on the flipside, Latrell Sprewell is a Brady Street legend in Milwaukee

NBA fans hate him but he's absolutely beloved in Milwaukee
hes a legend around here choking and all no doubt about it sad as that is take that to the bank bromigos
About 20 years ago Sprewell and Mo Williams were standing outside a bar in Milwaukee with me and some friends. One of my friends, who had no idea who either of them were, joked with Sprewell about his Hyundai beating Spree's Maybach (that was parked right in front of the bar) in a race. No kidding, Spree went straight for his throat and had to be pulled off my friend. Dude loves the choke move.

Ultra dooooosh Meyers Leonard or Leonard Meyers or whatever rolled up in front of a Lake Oswego bar/restaurant with his GIANT truck. Buddy of mine a few friends were outside the bar waiting for their wives, watching to see who was going to exit this massive vehicle. First out was Mrs. Leonard Meyers (very attractive gal) and the 50 something year old dads kind of gawked at her, not knowing who she was other than a VERY attractive lady. Next out of the rig is Meyers, who immediately steps up to the middle aged dorks with a "WHAT! WHAT? HUH?" as if they posed some sort of threat to him or his lady.

Hated to see his career erode for calling somebody an antisemitic slur. Now he makes really bad country music songs that sounds surprisingly like all the terrible new bro country songs.

Co-Conspirator #8...it's Chauncey Billups when you read the profile and description so there is more than a poker game going on with the Portland Head Coach
Cheating in the NBA, shocker

-I think it's the tip of the iceberg and I'm waiting to see some NFL shenanigans, I don't think this will all be isolated to the NBA if we are talking mafia

Think this is flying under the radar because he isn't formally named in the Sports gambling indictment but Billups is apparently implicated in distributing info about the Blazers' roster to gamblers before they became public knowledge. "Co Conspirator 8", a player from 1997-2014, and head coach starting in 2021, allegedly gave word before it was announced that the Blazers would be resting several players before a March 2023 game due to "tanking"

This is what's being floated around local boards and radio. He was tipping off gamblers before the injury report was officially released.

Portland is going to lose draft picks for this.

Good thing I'm a Thunder fan.

Considering the age, sure. And if it works, please pay my bill.

I didn’t think of it from a team penalty standpoint but you’re probably right. Big difference between a coach and a player. It would be a good pick too since they owe one in trade with lottery protections.

There have been several incidents in Milwaukee over the years - two of which were hilarious stories involving the massive yacht he kept in the Milwaukee harbor. I'll let the news reports tell the stories. He does seem to have a choking thing.

Sprewell, 35, was questioned by police Aug. 30 after the woman told police that she was having consensual sex with Sprewell on his yacht, "Milwaukee's Best" when he began to choke her. After the boat returned to shore, Sprewell drove the woman to her home and she admitted herself to the sexual assault treatment center at Aurora Sinai Medical Center. Police observed red marks on the woman's neck. Milwaukee Police sources told OnMilwaukee.com today that the 21-year-old woman informed the Milwaukee County District Attorney's Office today that she has decided not to press charges against the former National Basketball Association all star.

In the second incident (non-choking-related) he broke his hand in an incident on his yacht and needed surgery, was out for a couple months. His agent told this tale about how he was fighting a storm, pulling ropes and such to keep his yacht afloat one night when the gales of November came early. Eye witnesses had a different account:
"The two eyewitnesses quoted by the Post said that after they sailed on his yacht Sept. 20, Sprewell had a party while it was docked at the lakefront area in downtown Milwaukee.
An argument ensued about 2:30 a.m. after a woman Sprewell hadn't invited vomited on a carpet by the bar area. Sprewell wanted the woman to leave the boat, but her boyfriend objected.
Sprewell took a swing at the boyfriend, missed and hit a wall. Sprewell cursed in pain and asked his guests not to say anything about it, the Post said."

Not if he was just a Face Card once.
do we know this to be true?
We don't know it really either way; just that the only allege incident in the indictment that Billups directly participated in was in 2019. Point 36 says it was numerous occasions where "Face Cards" were used in Rigged Games, but lumps Billups and Jones together as "Face Cards" and gives no dates to when they were Face Cards.

@Yo Mama made reference to it above, but between the two indictments, the Feds clearly think Billups was involved, but for whatever reason didn't think they could get a conviction (at this time) on the 2023 sports betting side, so went with poker allegation.
With all due respect, Chauncey needs to find a new lawyer.

Are you a Detroit or CU fan, by chance? Honestly just curious. I would throw Portland in there but not sure if they have a fan.

We're all Lakers' fans here.

It's obviously retaliation from the administration for Portland making them look foolish.
Did Rozier really need to be rolled out with shackles around his legs? Little over the top but we'll keep it all under the sarcasm umbrella

The NCAA said Thursday it is investigating 13 Division I men’s basketball players at six schools — including Temple and Arizona State — for alleged violations of gambling rules and failing to cooperate with investigators.
The association said allegations vary in each case but include athletes betting on and against their own teams, sharing information to be used by bettors and knowingly manipulating scoring or game outcomes

You guys are NBA fans. Were they able to tell which players were gambling on the games because those players showed up eager to play and even jogged back on defense at times?

These newly-liberated Blazers are fast and young and annoying, which I think is the point. Making the Warriors look old and befuddled (with the possible exception of Kuminga).

I don't know about his actual coaching, but Thiago Splitter looks the part

Hopefully they learn how to close games out. They had the Timberwussies dead to rights and couldn't finish it. Of course, the refs bailed Minn out but still, Portland is going to be a tough opponent this season.

Lakers look much better tonight. Except for Luka who looks about the same. 41 in the first game, 47 tonight. Thats a Lakers record for the first two game. Lakers by 21 in the 4th.

They're closing it tonight, that's for sure. I'm impressed, by Clingan, Camara, and Avdija especially. It wasn't flukey at all, they earned it. And with a good gameplan from the new coach from what I can tell. The West is even harder than it seemed a day ago, good lord.

No excuses here but I was in bed and so exhausted when I wrote this and posted it that I thought I was only thinking it. That is the God’s honest truth. Kind of amusing in retrospect, but this was weird to see on the computer.

Every time I watch Luka Doncic in a Lakers uniform I ask myself how in the world did Dallas allow this guy to be traded? I mean it’s gotta be the worst trade ever, right?

Right now it looks like it, but time will tell. There is also a lot of moving parts besides Davis and Luka. There is the future first and Cooper Flagg. They never get Flagg if they don't trade Luka.

The actual question is would Luka have been this motivated if he had stayed with the Mavericks.

I disagree with the George trade. No one thought that was an horrific trade when it happened, in hindsight it is worse. The Luka trade was laughed at it from start.

If we are using hindsight we can probably find a lot of really bad trades and we won't know where to rank the Luka trade for a decade.
