2025 College Football Thread: Akron recruiter scoffs when player mentions maybe wanting to go to Penn State (111 Viewers)

I'm completely fine and okay with Phil Knight and Nike being the reason why Oregon is relevant. I didn't even go there. And I wasn't smart enough to get into Notre Dame, so you got me there too.
I just enjoy watching exciting football and that's what Oregon has been for me for 25 years now and even without a championship, I'm an enthusiastic season ticket hold who already renewed for next year. Go Ducks! Go Money!

Yes, Phil Knight and Nike have made Oregon relevant. Without those connections, Oregon would just be another school. No argument. Maybe if they had an entire religion backing them or a network that gave them a lifetime contract for gazillions airing their games even when they sucked for years they wouldn't need Phil Knight but they have him and boy has it been pretty nice.

Still think the AD of Penn State just sealed his fate. From bungling the Franklin situation to failing to land a new coach to trashing a program that beat them twice in two years, the guy is giant harvest load.
It isn't like there is only one Catholic school. There are reasons why it has become the Catholic institution in the US. But absolutely, being THE Catholic university among thousands is one of the many reasons that make ND different from any other school. And as I have discussed, no other school has the ability to get a media deal like ND had on it's own and that is largely because of the national following of ND as well as it's unique standing in college football. Your 'stabs' at ND are actually just further evidence of how unique and special ND is. Thank you. I appreciate that.

For Oregon, I am not attacking. I am just pointing out facts. Another example of how it is all about Phil Knight and his influence is among the "new blood" programs, there is only one that has never won a championship. Why would that school be considered a "new blood" when all the other "new blood's" have won Championships and makes it seemingly a basic attribute to be considered one? The answer is Phil Knight. Why would that be a negative? It is Oregon's special weapon that makes them different from the Washington, Cal, Oregon St, Stanford, etc schools. I don't see why that is something to get defensive about just as much I would not get defensive about ND being THE Catholic university and being able to obtain it's own media deals.

As for the AD of Penn State.... getting Matt Campbell will save him but even if it didn't, him losing his job would not be about bad mouthing another school but because of the absolute huge stumble after firing Franklin.
He could have been talking about BYU

Sorry @Chadstroma - Notre Dame was my kid’s third choice after USC and TEXAS. And he’s Catholic! I fully agree that ND is special (and it was my wife’s dream school for our kid), but that campus experience is BRUTAL.

Ok...
Well, not everyone wants to go to the best school that they can go to. Sometimes you want to go where there is nice weather and pretty girls.

140. Montana
141. North Texas
142. Columbia
143. Army
144. North Dakota State
145. McNeese State
146. Howard
147. UAB
148. Towson

Flawed list! Hampton made the list while W&M didn't. W&M beat Hampton by like 50 points and had a better recruiting class. Must be bias against the Tribe. ;)

Yeah, that and the better engineering program. Although if he wanted to go to the best engineering program on his list, he would have ended up at the football wasteland that is Purdue.

As someone who took the California High School Profiency Exam after basically dropping out in mid Junior year, the best school I could get into was a junior college before finishing my bachelor's at Saint Leo University (small school in Florida) before doing about half a Masters program at Gonzaga (yea for name recognition finally).

I aspire for my kids to go to ND... or at least my sons... my daughter may not have the drive. Hence taking them to ND's youth football camps which seems to have worked.

Knock me all you want. I am not a blue blood but I want my kids to be. I did not attend ND but I am a life long fan.

They’ll have more fun at USC!

By the way, I didn’t go to USC and GM didn’t go to Oregon, so no knocking from either of us!

You won't get me to say anything nicer about USC other than the weather or girls but I can't say that what you stated is technically wrong.

Purdue has a great engineering program. And great basketball team this year.

I was just curious. I also didn't attend the university I root for, though both my sons attended (one graduated with honors, the other failed out so spectacularly that they aught to name a bar stool after him) so I feel a little better about my bandwagon fandom to Oregon.

Millsaps Majors just need a Phil Knight and to move out of Mississippi to become real contenders!

I know your son made you a USC fan. I would have an identity crisis if one of my kids went to USC because I will end up a fan of any other school that they go to. ND is my dream for them but it is their lives to live and follow their own dreams.... please merciful God, don't ever let that be USC.

I think it’s assumed most ND fans didn’t go there. It’s a tough school and their fanbase is huge. I have a really good friend who went to Dayton but is a massive ND fan.

Gatekeeping fandom is so over anyways. There is no good or bad reason to root for a sports team. If you can put boomer and sooner together in the right order I don’t care if you can find Oklahoma on a map - you’re in.

Fun thing about me is though I am a passionate ND fan... my AA and BS are from Saint Leo and I did Masters work at Gonzaga (all Catholic) on top of my kids going to Catholic elementary/Jr High with me coaching there with the potential of one or both boys going to Catholic HS (Daughter is at public HS) . Oh and I applied a few months ago to a Catholic HS for the assistant AD position.. I am not Catholic.

My dad went to Texas. A lot of my HS friends went to Texas.

I *LOATHE* the University of Texas.

No, I think your hatred of USC is visceral.

My hatred for UT is mostly because I couldn't get in. :bag:

Firing Franklin for a guy who loses 4-5 games in the Big 12 every year…..idk. Is that an upgrade?

I agree that if PSU wasn't getting a top tier coaching candidate, it would have been better to keep Terry Smith as a Penn State loyalist who views the job as his pinnacle. I see lots of people liking the hire though.

Not Catholic. Just the local school.

Grew up a bike ride from ND's campus. Got accepted, but I'd have had a lot of loans to pay off at the end had I gone there. Versus a full ride to Michigan Tech. And given it doesn't really matter where you go for undergrad as a physics major, it was unfortunately too easy of a choice.

If it was all the way down south it would be called Florida Tech, no?

Gross. For invoking Davie's name, you owe the board some Hail Mary's. (and Powlus was Holtz....c'mon man). And we're all so old now, not only has Ron worked at ND since his time there (deputy AD currently), but his son Ron III already has played, graduated, and works at the school too in football operations.

Since you invoked Davie....that 2000 team is still the biggest WTF in team history. Littered with talent and people would be surprised to see the coaches on the list (Urban Meyer - WRs, Charlie Strong - DL, Dan Mullen - GA, etc., etc.). With all of that talent and top tier coaching, that was the group that got blown out to Ochocinco and TJ Whosyourdaddy 41-9 in the Fiesta Bowl.

Lol....Michiganders refer to anything north of Detroit as "Up North". It's adorable. And I believe Michigan Tech is WAY WAY WAY "up north".

Powlus apparently has a big part of structuring NIL deals.

I'm pretty sure they should just rename the GameAbove Sports Bowl, the Penn State Invitational (sadly the Big10 doesn't have a tie in the the Pop Tarts Bowl or the Duke's Mayo Bowl).

It has changed up north is anything Bay city or north. Basically the Zilwaukee bridges is the divide.

Yep, it's further north than the majority of the population of Canada live. At the same latitude as Duluth. 250-350 inches of snow a year with it sticking out on a peninsula into the middle of Lake Superior.

It was definitely a different environment than ND would have been. But I did enjoy it.

So how do all the conferences fix the conference seeding/tiebreakers? Include total record?
Divisions, or they need to use the deciding entity’s rankings - computers before, committee now.

At least it would get things as close as possible to being fully decided on the field. As the conferences swell, they have to go divisions ala NFL where each teams play each other annually and roll it up from there or they have to be ok with YOLO conjecture of a committee either for the playoffs or for their title games.

This. You should have to win a round robin schedule to play in a championship game and get an auto bid to the playoffs. Conferences can changes divisions every year for all I care but these unbalanced schedules are a joke if we are going to rank teams based on W-L records.

Ref runs in immediately to indicate td in Tulane game. Now they're reviewing it and there is no angle that shows a td. So how did this ancient Grandpa see it yet 100 different video angles it can't be seen. This is why people question games being fixed.

You don't like NDs campus?
:sadbanana:
If you are looking at weather, things to do around the schools and the beauty of the females... there is no contest in favor of USC.

But the actual campus, USC is hopelessly outclassed and it is laughable how much. The beauty of the campus, point of interest, with history and tradition just overflowing all over.
