2025 College Football Thread: Akron recruiter scoffs when player mentions maybe wanting to go to Penn State (140 Viewers)

I'm completely fine and okay with Phil Knight and Nike being the reason why Oregon is relevant. I didn't even go there. And I wasn't smart enough to get into Notre Dame, so you got me there too.
I just enjoy watching exciting football and that's what Oregon has been for me for 25 years now and even without a championship, I'm an enthusiastic season ticket hold who already renewed for next year. Go Ducks! Go Money!

Maybe if they had an entire religion backing them or a network that gave them a lifetime contract for gazillions airing their games even when they sucked for years they wouldn't need Phil Knight but they have him and boy has it been pretty nice.

Still think the AD of Penn State just sealed his fate. From bungling the Franklin situation to failing to land a new coach to trashing a program that beat them twice in two years, the guy is giant harvest load.

It isn't like there is only one Catholic school. There are reasons why it has become the Catholic institution in the US. But absolutely, being THE Catholic university among thousands is one of the many reasons that make ND different from any other school. And as I have discussed, no other school has the ability to get a media deal like ND had on it's own and that is largely because of the national following of ND as well as it's unique standing in college football. Your 'stabs' at ND are actually just further evidence of how unique and special ND is. Thank you. I appreciate that.

Another example of how it is all about Phil Knight and his influence is among the "new blood" programs, there is only one that has never won a championship. Why would that be a negative? It is Oregon's special weapon that makes them different from the Washington, Cal, Oregon St, Stanford, etc schools. I don't see why that is something to get defensive about just as much I would not get defensive about ND being THE Catholic university and being able to obtain it's own media deals.

As for the AD of Penn State.... getting Matt Campbell will save him but even if it didn't, him losing his job would not be about bad mouthing another school but because of the absolute huge stumble after firing Franklin.

As someone who took the California High School Profiency Exam after basically dropping out in mid Junior year, the best school I could get into was a junior college before finishing my bachelor's at Saint Leo University (small school in Florida) before doing about half a Masters program at Gonzaga (yea for name recognition finally).

I aspire for my kids to go to ND... or at least my sons... my daughter may not have the drive. Hence taking them to ND's youth football camps which seems to have worked.

I was just curious. I also didn't attend the university I root for, though both my sons attended (one graduated with honors, the other failed out so spectacularly that they aught to name a bar stool after him) so I feel a little better about my bandwagon fandom to Oregon.

I know your son made you a USC fan. I would have an identity crisis if one of my kids went to USC because I will end up a fan of any other school that they go to. ND is my dream for them but it is their lives to live and follow their own dreams.... please merciful God, don't ever let that be USC.

I think it’s assumed most ND fans didn’t go there. It’s a tough school and their fanbase is huge. I have a really good friend who went to Dayton but is a massive ND fan.

Gatekeeping fandom is so over anyways. There is no good or bad reason to root for a sports team. If you can put boomer and sooner together in the right order I don’t care if you can find Oklahoma on a map - you’re in.

Fun thing about me is though I am a passionate ND fan... my AA and BS are from Saint Leo and I did Masters work at Gonzaga (all Catholic) on top of my kids going to Catholic elementary/Jr High with me coaching there with the potential of one or both boys going to Catholic HS (Daughter is at public HS) . Gross. For invoking Davie's name, you owe the board some Hail Mary's. (and Powlus was Holtz....c'mon man). And we're all so old now, not only has Ron worked at ND since his time there (deputy AD currently), but his son Ron III already has played, graduated, and works at the school too in football operations.

Since you invoked Davie....that 2000 team is still the biggest WTF in team history. Littered with talent and people would be surprised to see the coaches on the list (Urban Meyer - WRs, Charlie Strong - DL, Dan Mullen - GA, etc., etc.). With all of that talent and top tier coaching, that was the group that got blown out to Ochocinco and TJ Whosyourdaddy 41-9 in the Fiesta Bowl.

Yep, it's further north than the majority of the population of Canada live. At the same latitude as Duluth. 250-350 inches of snow a year with it sticking out on a peninsula into the middle of Lake Superior.

As the conferences swell, they have to go divisions ala NFL where each teams play each other annually and roll it up from there or they have to be ok with YOLO conjecture of a committee either for the playoffs or for their title games.

This. You should have to win a round robin schedule to play in a championship game and get an auto bid to the playoffs. Conferences can changes divisions every year for all I care but these unbalanced schedules are a joke if we are going to rank teams based on W-L records.

If you are looking at weather, things to do around the schools and the beauty of the females... there is no contest in favor of USC.

But the actual campus, USC is hopelessly outclassed and it is laughable how much. The beauty of the campus, point of interest, with history and tradition just overflowing all over.
