2025 College Football Thread: James Franklin decides losing big games wasn’t quite enough (10 Viewers)

Vandy boys showing a lot of fire and losing some composure over the imminent loss. I love that the crowd’s enthusiasm is grating on them. The will to win, and belief in it, exists in black and gold. ⚓
Heckuva team, I love the way they play for your coach. Glad to not see Diego again, definition of a gamer.

Sucks that Texas lost and arch was awful. Their other QB looked ok. Hoping that's not a switch made while we roll out Hawkins next week.

He threw a deepish ball into prevent defense in the middle of the field. Let's not put him in the Heisman house just yet.

I don't see a way they bench Manning with the 8? Million in nil? Maybe 11 mil. Not till they lose to OU.

I don't see them benching Manning. At best they mutually agree on a JJ McCarthy sprained ankle injury as the public reason for the benching but still don't see it happening. He needs reps and experience.

Miami true freshman Bryce Fitzgerlad picks off a pass and returns it 43 yards. The next play, true freshman WR Malachi Toney catches a 44-yard touchdown

:moneybag:
3rd INT for Fitzgerald this year. Toney with 3 TDs, one called back on motion.

Miami also did well in free agency, Beck, Daniels, C Brockermeyer, plus a good defensive coordinator.

The story of the Napier tenure....

Where the hell has that been all year? We got 1 good freshman wr back for this game and now UF can score?

Ill enjoy the win but why cant UF do this every week (ir at least most weeks)? So frustrating.

There are already "he's injured and needs to get well" whispers going around despite not appearing injured in any way.

If we all agree that Ohio State, Miami and Oregon are the 3 best teams in college football, who is #4 for you right now?

Indiana? Texas Tech? A&M? OU?

Alabama has to be in the top 10 now too, right?

Texas, Penn State and Florida State out of the Top 25 this week, IMO.

Ole Miss, A&M, or Texas Tech. Indiana can be in the discussion if they win in Eugene next week. Feels like a decent gap after the top 3 but any of them are certainly beatable on a given day.

Congrats Penn St for losing to the worst team in college football.

It is a tough environment to play in, no fans in such a big stadium. The team has no coaches and not even sure who this QB is who wasn’t starting to begin the year.

Franklin should be left on the tarmac.

When DeShaun Foster was fired he received a 5 million dollar buyout, and I was thinking that’s so stupid, what a waste of money for UCLA, why did they pay him so much?

I just read that if Penn State fires James Franklin, he will receive a 56 million dollar buyout!!! That’s amazing.

Well... maybe Franklin is trying to get fired? Kind of explains a lot.

Forgot Ole Miss. Good call.

I can’t wait to hear Todd McShay’s pod this week. Last week after the Oregon loss he teased about dirt on James Franklin. Wonder if he talks about it. Newsletter he sent out blame the loss solely on him and said his press conference after gave him everything he needed to know.

@Uruk-Hai

5-0????!!!! Big win if it holds!
:wall:

That was a tough one. Even though Maryland had a decent lead, it never felt like they had the game in hand - and they didn't. Lost opportunity for the Terps. Their true F QB - Malik Washington - is really fun to watch.

Sorry, GB. I gave up too early in that one. What a wild finish. Had no idea UW won until this morning (I made the switch to baseball). :bag:

That was a great game. The UW sophomore QB is also quite good and ultimately outplayed Malik Washington. Both QBs have very bright futures.

Indiana needs to schedule some out of conference games that matter before I'd reward them with anything.

48 hours later I still have a great feeling from the UCLA game Saturday.

I was trying to explain to my family, in all seriousness: this is why I’m a sports fan. So much awful happening in the world, so much to complain about, and sports can, rarely but sometimes, give you moments of absolute euphoria. After the game, after they carried Jerry Neuheisel off the field, the TV cameras showed his young wife running up to him and leaping into his arms. I literally had tears in my eyes. That’s why I watch.

GM's Top 20 – October 7, 2025

1. Ohio State –
Dispatched the Boat Rowers with ease. Illinois awaits.
2. Miami – FSU made the final score respectable, but this game never felt in doubt. Runway is quite clear for them to run the table and finish undefeated.
3. Oregon – Just glad the Ducks are hosting Indiana. Should be a great game in Autzen.
4. Ole Miss – Wonder how the Kiffin family spent the week off? Hosting the Cougs Saturday.
5. Texas A&M – Relieved not to have to visit the Swamp this weekend to face Florda.
6. Oklahoma – Red River Shootout not as intriguing as it seemed this summer but not for the same reasons. Texas is favored by 2.5 and that seems very very fishy to me.
7. Indiana – Crazy that this is the biggest game of the weekend but here it is. Line opened at 10, bet down to 7.5.
8. Alabama – Undefeated Mizzou gets to see if they can topple the mighty Tide, playing as good as any team in the country right now.
9. Texas Tech – Trucked Houston and not hosts Kansas. Best team Lubbock money could buy!
10. Georgia – 5 SEC teams in the top 10? Could be 6 soon enough. Crazy.
11. LSU – Curious how this team looks after a week off with Coach Ratched angry at everything?
12. Tennessee – 7 SEC teams in the top 12. Criminy. Should have a fun time vs. Arkansas unless Petrino has a son that’s calling plays.
13. Georgia Tech – Moving up due to shortcomings of others. The American Way!
14. Michigan – Big10 needs more love now that Franklin crapped the bed. Interesting game @ USC.
15. Notre Dame – 3-2 and the schedule sets up super nice for them to win out.
16. Missouri – I still haven’t seen them play but 9am Saturday is my chance. Huge test for Mizzou.
17. Illinois – Really hard to forget about the 50 point beat-down by Indiana but they’ve rallied back. Can they keep this one close vs #1?
18. BYU – Quietly putting together a very good season at 5-0 and hopefully they don’t overlook Arizona for the Holy War on the 18th.
19. Virgina – One of the better stories of the 2025 college football season. Coach Elliott’s seat cooling off considerably.
20. Memphis – Elevating them here and consider them the frontrunners for the G5 playoff spot.

Dropping Out:

Penn State
– They let Oregon beat them twice. Now what do they do? Franklin is an expensive problem.
Vanderbilt – Could easily get back into the Top 20. This is a good team.
Texas – This is not a good team. This is not a good QB. This is not my beautiful wife.
Iowa State – Ugh, you had everything going for you but Cincinnati derailed those good vibes. Can creep back into the picture but this loss stung.

Just Missed:

USC
– Big opportunity in LA. Huge game vs Michigan.
Arizona State – Finding their footing in a nice victory over TCU.
Cincinnati – Makes me happy seeing Shuke happy. Let’s win another one!

Texas is favored I assume because Mateer is still believed to be out.

But he is pushing to try and play. Which is interesting.

Just feels like OU's Defense should be the story in this one. That unit is NASTY.

I am expecting Miami to go undefeated for the season. From memory, the rest of the top 10 have more than a game that they could easily lose.

Miami has it made in the shade. They should (and likely will) be favorites to heavy favorites in all remaining games.

If Oregon can get past Indiana - and this is going to be a really hard one - they still have to play at Iowa, at UW and have USC left. That's rough.

Texas Tech could very well end the season undefeated. BYU or Arizona State could be a problem.

I want to see Georgia Tech run the table. I am really liking the new paradigm where more schools have a shot at glory.

Many complain about NIL and the transfer portal, but if this is one of the effects, I put it in the positive column. The days of dynasty programs stacking talent three strings deep are likely a thing of the past.

Arizona State – Finding their footing in a nice victory over TCU.
Cincinnati – Makes me happy seeing Shuke happy. Let’s win another one!
Texas is favored I assume because Mateer is still believed to be out.

But he is pushing to try and play. Which is interesting.
Is Mateer exepcted back after?

I am expecting Miami to go undefeated for the season. From memory, the rest of the top 10 have more than a game that they could easily lose.

Miami has it made in the shade. They should (and likely will) be favorites to heavy favorites in all remaining games.

Ohio State has Penn State and Michigan left. Not easy.

Ohio State winning it all last year was not something many people were expecting after their loss to Oregon and especially after their loss to UM. People were calling for Ryan Day's head! Ultimately, a Blue Blood won it all in in the CFP inaugural year, but it wasn't how most of us thought it might happen.

Ohio State very well could repeat as champs; they're incredibly talented. But there's quite a few teams right now poised to make the playoffs that just haven't been a part of prior discussions....Ole Miss, Texas Tech, Indiana. Hell, it's been 25 years for Miami to get back into the conversation.

Here's The Athletic's Week 6 Playoff Bracket

Byes: 1 Ohio State, 2 Miami, 3 Oregon, 4 Oklahoma

8 Indiana vs 9 Alabama: Winner gets Ohio State
5 Ole Mis vs 12 Memphis: Winner gets OU
7 Texas Tech vs 10 LSU: Winner gets Miami
6 Texas A&M vs 11 Georgia: Winner gets Oregon

So, 6 teams from the SEC, 3 teams from the Big10, 1 from the ACC, 1 from the Big 12 and 1 G5 team.

S-E-C, S-E-C, S-E-C!

That is going to change a lot... a ton of football to be played.

More transfer than NIL on this I think. NIL may reshape the powerhouses as some schools that have been good but not elite have money to spend. College ball will largely be layered moving forward by who can spend more and who can not. That is a different power structure but not exactly better than before.

The transfer portal is driving what you are pointing out that teams like Bama are not able to stack 5 star athletes and have them sit for two years before seeing the field. Now, players can and do move around and a big reason for that could be "I am not getting playing time". The Tarheels went after a ton of those players and it hasn't exactly worked out for them.

Can't wait to see how their new battle plan of going after 'freshmen' will play out, but it's certainly a move.
