That was so unfortunate because ARSB slipped and that threw everything out of whack.
Also, I'm glad I never looked at the Amik Robertson injury. Yet another player with a broken arm or leg. That's just some awful misfortune. It's a shame because he was playing at a high level.

I don't think the Commanders ran anything exortic - same plays they have showed on tape. They're very much a RH team, often run to the boundary with the ball on right hash. Daniels has a strong preference to escape to his right. Washington's OL isn't that awesome. Detroit's front four rarely made a stop and other than Smith batting a ball, never came close to making a play on Jayden.
The first 3 and out really set the tone. I get the romantic idea of let's go right back to who we are, pound Montgomery and get the crowd into it. First carry, fine - two yards. Seemed like hubris going back to again, put them in a 3 & 13 hole.
Late first, 3rd & 1 on the Was 17....empty set with Monty out wide? Why? Gibbs had 4 touches of 81 yards at that point. Best weapon the field, it was working, Commanders were reeling there - another score and Detroit is up 14-3. IDK man, hindsight is 20-20, but just seemed like sometimes we tried to get cute when we have enough playmakers that isn't required.
Disappointed with the sequencing. Just seemed like we were impatient on both sides of the ball in our playcalling.

It’s been a very long time since a sporting event impacted my mood. This one did. I’m still upset this morning. What a disappointment.
I guess we’ll be getting Johnson and Glenn back next year. After their performances yesterday, they probably dropped off of a lot of candidate lists.

Just seemed like we had one wheel off the track all game from all aspects, almost eerily. The most disappointing part for me is it just didn’t seem like we were ourselves from a preparation and focus standpoint to compete in this game. Going to be a tough one to come to terms with. On another note, congratulations to Washington who deserves all the credit in the world for showing up prepared, focused, and energized. We can point to all the injuries, however Washington really is in a rebuilding year and has less surrounding talent than most teams in the playoffs. Amazing job by their staff and players….and Jayden Daniels…wow.

Washington made Detroit backpedal on defense and Detroit made themselves backpedal on offense. Pretty difficult to win if you're not able to set the tone in either direction of the game.

One play can change a game and that one had a big impact. Totally shifted the game. It was third and one..why were the throwing, and why was it empty backfield? Get the first and march on.
Another decision I did not like was starting Monty on the first drive when Gibbs has been the RB in the NFL last 4 weeks. We all like Monty but he had not played in a month. Let Gibbs get the team going and work Monty in here and there. We go 3 and out.
Goff threw a terrible pick 6 when he had LaPorta wide open for a 10-12 yard gain. Tom Brady had some good insight last night about having to be patient and not force the big plays.

The Lions game plan was eerily similar to the Tampa game, where we threw 55 times in a close game. Given how great Gibbs has been, he should have had 25-30 touches yesterday, especially coming off a bye week and even moreso because Washington never stopped him.

The other key one was the 4th and 2 when Arnold lost contain on Daniels by shading over to the middle to help stop the rb. I mean, everyone in the stadium except Arnold knew Daniels was keeping that ball, and if the rb got to Arnold, he’d already be 3 yards past the first down line.
Been pretty obvious for weeks that their insistance on feeding Monty was a mistake. Understand in the regular season, but in the playoffs you give the ball to Gibbs as often as you can.

This. Gibbs looked great, was shifty, fast and ripping 10 yards per touch. Not sure why they continued to throw the ball.

I think his role is fine, especially in a 17 game season. That said in a big game or the playoffs any time he’s out there that means Gibbs isn’t and he’s now shown to be one of the best players in the NFL

They still have the core together, and it will take some time to adjust to new coordinators (assuming they both leave)
Draft / sign some offensive line depth (who knows if Rangnow keeps playing and Decker getting older / banged up) and keep adding pieces to the defense and I think they are still a Top 5 team going into next year

So what, Kurt Warner worked in a grocery store. Bridgewater is a 10-year veteran who has a winning record and worked with the team all last season. Charaterizing him as a high school football coach is silly. Hooker was a 3rd round pick who still has promise. Most 3rd round picks don't make it, especially QBs.
That was a hard watch. My heart sunk as soon as I saw Amik's arm just flopping by his side. Never had a good feeling about the game after that. Early on the offense kept up, and the fourth down flop helped keep the game close. But the defense just never showed any coherency and was easily picked apart. Goff had a rough day on a day he needed to be perfect.
We are still in good shape. Getting healthy gets us 90 percent there. Brad will do some magic and get us another Edge and another SAM. Our coaching staff has enough depth to ensure continuity. Campbell runs things more than you think. It was a disappointing way to end it, but the franchise is in excellent position for years to come.

This was me. I knew we lost someone who could play press man, which is a necessity if you want to blitz. We had no choice but to blitz because the front four got zero pressures when there was no blitz. I knew it was over when Robertson went down.

Last night was not the Detroit Lions team that roared to a 15-2 record and the No. 1 seed in the NFC. There were glimpses of that great team, especially on offense in the first half. But the strong consistency of greatness that dominated the Lions 2024 regular season--the best in franchise history--was nowhere to be found against the Commanders.
Five giveaways, four of which were meaningful, including a bad pick-six on a bad Jared Goff throw that he hadn't missed all season. Missed blocks all night from the typically outstanding offensive line directly led to another one of those turnovers, the Goff lost fumble early. All-Pro safety Kerby Joseph had his worst game of the season at a very bad time. Goff too. Terrion Arnold struggled against the run, something the rookie corner had been very good at all season.
Too much bad football. It only takes one bad one to end what has otherwise been the most special Detroit Lions season of the Super Bowl era. There will be ample time to dissect personnel moves and coaching changes — changes that are going to come about out of other teams hiring away assistants, not the Lions firing anyone. This loss was one really bad game from an otherwise great team, but that is all it takes at this point of the season.

Yeah, I 100% agree with this thought, I feel the only way either of them don’t get a head coaching position will only be because they elect to stay and try to win a title next year.
We have a bunch of great players (plus some quality backups) coming back that were on IR. But D-line is an obvious area (especially edge) plus another corner.

With the Rams and Stafford losing a tough game to the Eagles only the mobile QBs are left in the playoffs (Allen, Mahomes, Hurts, Daniels and Lamar).
With Goff’s flameout in the Washington game the Lions do need to give some consideration as to whether Hooker as a mobile QB has the overall ability to be a long term answer at QB.
As I said earlier I did not expect the Lions to win the SB due to their defensive injuries but they could/would have beaten Washington without the turnovers.

The talk of replacing Goff is hysterical to me. He is an above average qb. This is the Lions championship window. Who are the Lions going to get that is even remotely close to Goff? And for how much? And what do they do with Goff salary? It’s just irrational thinking. They can win a championship with him.
And there is a more than decent chance Hendon Hooker doesn’t break camp with the Lions next season. You can say whatever you want about the reasons Bridgewater was active over Hooker. If the Lions had any belief Hooker could be competent in Goffs stead he would have been the second qb.

I think it's indisputable and objective to say of the eight teams in the division round, the Lions had the best regular season.

Even though St Brown slipped it was third and 1 from the 19. Why go open backfield? The d-lines tees off with an open backfield. At the time Gibbs was getting 5-10 yards a carry, they were dicing up Washinton on the ground. Get the first down, move the chains and keep the drive going.
I agree with what Bobby stated. Lions go up 14-3 and it is a different game. Now they are down 2 scores. That one play swung the momentum.
I don`t think Johnson had his best game at all Saturday. The reverse-pass to Williams call at that time was horrible. I watched that play yesterday 5 times. As soon as Williams got the ball he slowed down looking at the ball trying to get it right to throw. At that point the play was doomed and he should have just tried to make what he could on the ground.
But I have to believe they told Williams "If the play breaks down or nobody is open just run"
Another thing that bothered me was starting Monty. Gibbs has been the best, most explosive RB along with Barkley in the NFL. Monty had not played in a month. Start off with a heavy dose of Gibbs first couple drives and then work Monty in. Put the best out there and get points the first drive. I know DC was trying to make a point and was hoping Monty would bang out some tough yards, and the crowd would go will but it failed.
The pick 6 was terrible as Goff had LaPorta wide open underneath for at least a 10 yard gain. Goff did not play well once Lions fell behind..was pressing to make plays.

When you look at the game, the Lions lost it more than the Commanders won it. I can't believe they didn't give Gibbs 25 carries.

Just wanted to stop and it and say sorry for the rough ending to a magical season. Especially to Mr. Class himself BobbyLayne. Sports are cruel. You guys will have your moment someday and it'll all be worth it.

Maybe he is terrible since they brought back Bridgewater but it is more possible they brought back Bridgewatet due to his experience and locker room chemistry. Remember Hooker is inexperienced because they haven’t played him.
Goff and the defense were the reasons the Lions lost Saturday. Most of the time this year he’s handled the pressure but not Saturday. He’s had panicky spurts in the past but I thought he moved past them from the end of the 2022 season going forward.
In last year’s NFC championship game vs Frisco the Lions had a total team collapse in the second half. No one was able to right that ship including Goff. But I remember Brock Purdy breaking out of the pocket and running for big yards and first downs at big moments to win the game for the 9ers. This is an element the Lions offense lacks.

I thought Hooker should have been given more reps in the blowout games but it did not happen.
What is strange is Hooker is older than Hurts, and the same age as Allen and Jackson and those guys have been starters for 5 years.
I was thinking this same thing yesterday.

I said at the time I didn’t like the pick because of the age. He should have played in the blowouts it was a missed opportunity.
His age isn't a big deal given that QBs play into their upper 30s and sometimes 40s.

I actually went back & after some internal debate added Martin. His clean out day comments…get this…he’s going to take the off-season more seriously lol.
DJ Reader plays a fair amount of A gap, he’s not Dexter Lawrence or Leonard Williams, but he is capable at what they asked him to do. He’ll never have the production of Alim McNeill, and unlike most of their bigs, doesn’t have the skill set to be a multiple. Just clog the middle and push the pocket.
PFF Grade wise, he’s slightly above average - good at everything, not great at any one thing.
