Well that should give the coach the confidence not to go for it on 4th down.

From the top 100 players list, these were all the players drafted during the Brad Holmes era who made the list:

Lions (#22, #23, #47, #80)
Cowboys (#17, #32)
Rams (#32, #78)
Jets (#38, #72)
Texans (#20)
49ers (#28)
Ravens (#43)
Bengals (#45)
Broncos (#52)
Dolphins (#63)
Eagles (#90)
Seahawks (#91)
Jags (#94)

This is why Brad Holmes does not deserve criticism for his draft. Considering we also have Branch, Campbell, Gibbs, Iffy, Alim, and Jamo who could make the list in the future. People are even raving about Levi in camp. Brad Holmes is the undipsuted king of the draft. 19 Teams don't even have a single players drafted in the last four years on the list and no other team has more than two. We have four! When you draft great players, positional value goes out the window.

This is a bad stat. Why don't the Eagles, Chiefs, Cowboys, Ravens get credit for doing it before Holmes started with the Lions? Why do only drafts count? Free agency and trades are important too.

No one should get blind faith. They make a mistake they deserve to be criticized.

Detroit is winning, so why not double those? I have some on Detroit beating Cincy for +11000, and Detroit beating Baltimore for +8500.

Brad is literally batting .800 on his draft picks, while the rest of the league is literally batting .200. That is not a hyperbole. Certainly hindsight is 20/20 and Brad could be perfect if only he had it. Unfortunately Brad does not possess the superpower of hindsight perfection, so we will need to settle for the supernatural drafting wizardry he does have. I plan to celebrate his incredible dedication and achievements despite this major character flaw.

Tim Twentyman camp standouts:

1. WR Jameson Williams

Williams took a more professional approach heading into his third season and that's been reflective of his play so far in camp. He looks much more comfortable in the offense and has been making plays all over the field, not just on the deep routes. Quarterback Jared Goff looks to have a lot more confidence in him after the two spent time this offseason in California throwing. Williams seems poised for a breakout season.

2. DL Levi Onwuzurike

Finally past the back injury that limited his first few seasons, Onwuzurike has transformed his body and is making a huge impact as a starter with the first-team defense so far in camp. Between playing the big end in base and three-technique, he's also played some big end in sub packages in nickel. He's looked great so far and that could mean big things for Detroit's defensive front and defense as a whole.

3. WR Daurice Fountain

The Lions have a couple open roster spots at wide receiver and Fountain is one of the players who has taken advantage of that fact with his play early in camp. He's got good size at 6-foot-2, 210 pounds and the ability to make tough catches in traffic and down the field with long touchdown grabs in 7-on-7 and team periods so far.

4. LB Derrick Barnes

There seems to be a comfort level with Barnes that is next level going into his fourth season. He knows the scheme front and back and has really looked good in the SAM linebacker role as a versatile player who can rush the quarterback and play in space. He made a terrific interception on Goff in Tuesday's practice, and he's been the most physical player in camp so far. His teammates on that side of the ball feed off of it.

5. CB Amik Robertson

Robertson played both inside and outside in his first four seasons with the Raiders but has been pretty exclusively in the slot here in Detroit. He's currently competing with Emmanuel Moseley (who has also been good) for first-team reps there. He's been a playmaker so far in camp getting his hands on a number of footballs. The Lions are in a better spot both from a talent and depth perspective at cornerback this season.

6. WR Amon-Ra St. Brown

We sometimes take St. Brown for granted because the All-Pro has been so good his first three years we just kind of expect it at this point. He's been particularly sharp so far in camp. On a daily basis he averages roughly half of Goff's targets, and so far I've noticed him drop just one ball. He looks poised for another monster season.

7. DL Marcus Davenport

After missing all of the offseason training program rehabbing an injury, Davenport has jumped into the padded portion of practice and shown why the Lions sought his talents in free agency. He's got terrific length (6-6, 265) and strength on the edge. He's been really good setting an edge and helping to push the pocket, which Aidan Hutchinson is expected to be a big beneficiary of.

8. T Penei Sewell

Much like we talk about with St. Brown, Sewell is so good it's just expected of him at this point, but he puts in the work. When all the other offensive linemen had the day off during a light practice Wednesday he flipped over to the left side so he could take the reps there. He's so good in space and his daily battles with Hutchinson are fun to watch. It's wild to think he's this good and he's just 23 years old.

9. WR Kaden Davis

Davis stood out in OTAs and minicamp and has continued his productive play right into training camp. Like Fountain, he's one of those players battling for a final roster spot. To win it, those players will have to flash playmaking ability and be good on special teams. Davis has done both so far. He made a 25-yard diving catch for a touchdown in Tuesday's practice that was one of the best plays in camp so far.

10. DL Aidan Hutchinson

Coming off an 11.5 sack season in 2023 where he finished second in the NFL with 101 total pressures (Micah Parsons; 103), Hutchinson looks even stronger and more productive to start his third training camp. The Lions have gotten him more help upfront and more talent and depth in the secondary. He should be a huge beneficiary of both if he stays healthy. The way he's looked in camp so far, I expect him to be among the NFL's sack leaders this year.

unofficial Depth Chart - Justin Rogers

Some interesting choices but really just reflects who is making plays and who is going to have to battle to make the 53-man.
  • RB - Monty ahead of Gibbs (Z Knight surprising RB3)
  • Slot - Amik over EMan
  • S - Brian Branch over Iffy
  • Kalif as WR3; backup WRs are Fountain, Green, and Kennedy
  • 3rd Stringers - Jefferson, Reynolds DPJ, Hooker, Martin
  • 4th String - Mahogany (illness), Tre'Quan, Vaki, Betts

No word on what specifically he is dealing with, but I’m afraid this might be a redshirt year. He’s going to meetings remotely but not working out or practicing.

He could be a starter next year so def a big bummer.

Dan Campbell says yesterday was a "spirited practice"

He liked the intensity, but notes that some guys "went rogue" in starting scrums

There were over 10 fights / skirmishes yesterday. Saw multiple tweets from beat writers on both sides saying it was the most intense practice session they had ever seen.

Dan said this morning an extension for Alim is close but they’re just going through the normal negotiation process.

Bummed about EMan but they’re looking forward to him returning at some point this year.

Slot CB - Amik Robertson is the projected starter. Ennis Rakestraw will be the backup with Moseley headed to IR-R. Iffy will get some reps there; seems like they want BB’s LT position to be SS with Kerby Joseph at FS.

Melifonwu is kind of the odd man out for now. Hard to believe after how well he played in 6 starts at the end of last year & in the playoffs.

CD3 & Arnold are solidified as the starting corners. Have to say, though, it’s going to be hard to keep Rakestraw off the field. He has been performing at a high level in TC, we’ll see how he does in the PS games. Vildor is having a good camp and is probably CB4 rn.

I *think* Khalil Dorsey, Steven Gilmore & C.J. Moore is a 3 fighting for 2 spots situation.

Starters & known contributors playing Thursday seems unlikely. Will mostly be developmental guys getting reps along with the guys who are on the bubble or competing for practice squad.

Zeitler (shoulder), Rodrigo, & Iffy will be out today, “minor, nothing serious.” LaPorta has a bit of a hammy & will be out again today. TA cleared concussion protocol yesterday (loud Guardian Caps collision with LT Andrew Thomas on a running play but he stayed upright.)

NFL confirmed today that the Detroit Lions and New York Giants organizations have each been fined $200,000 for multiple fights that broke out at the joint practices between the clubs earlier this week. All NFL clubs were reminded in a memo sent last month that fighting and unprofessional conduct at joint practices would not be tolerated.

@ConnorOrr

Yes there were more fights in Lions-Giants camp, but my dispatch from Detroit practice is about Jahmyr Gibbs.

In short: he's going to completely change this offense in 2024.

The fighting by Lions players is a departure from Campbell’s previous approach to scrimmages.
I remember when they scrimmaged the Colts that Campbell took a stance against it and that there was very little if any.
Did the Giants poke the bear or is Campbell wanting more physical contact.

IDK maybe grudges from last year? There weren’t fights but the Lions dominated the Giants at Allen Park. Probably best to not schedule joint practices with the same team B2B.

Just glad they had no serious injuries. We’ve already 3 season enders (Badgley, Moseley & a PS D-lineman.)

I forget where I read it, but someone who was at the practices said it felt like the Lions came in as the big brother and tried to assert themselves and the Giants as the little brother wasn't having it.

Not season ending though - gonna put him on IR-R & hopefully get him back at YE/Playoffs.

Sort of an under informed question, but what do you all think about Hookers mobility AND if they would let him run close to the goal line? For kicks, I'd like to put a few on tonight's game and DET is currently +310 for (2) rushing TDs and +1300 for (3). The idea of Hooker having a rushing TD chance seems to make what I think is an attractive "risk" even more attractive, coupled with the generally conservative nature of the first preseason game.

Until Hooker develops enough to be considered a reliable run/pass threat, I don't think the Lions would tip their play-calling hands by taking Goff out and putting in a run-only option.

If you're talking about only the preseason game, Hooker is supposed to be mobile enough to consider this. However, the Lions have never had a mobile QB under Ben Johnson/Dan Campbell, so I have no idea what they would do. In a preseason game that they don't care about winning, my guess would be that they'd rather see how he does passing in that situation for evaluation and development purposes.

I know it was only the first preseason game, but the Lions might want to contact Tannehill's agent just incase the next couple games look the same.

[Rogers] Lions Dan Campbell says QB Hendon Hooker sustained a concussion in the 2nd half vs Giants.

DL David Bada is an achilles injury and OL Connor Galvin is a knee injury, both could be long term.

WR Antoine Green also sustained a concussion

Sudfeld is so awful he's not even worth a practice squad spot

if they ranked players like the OWGR, out of 2208 players on active rosters + practice squads, pretty sure he'd consistently be north of 2200

he has played a total of 9 snaps in Detroit - 0 passes, 2 dropbacks, a sack, and a scramble for 0 yards, 3 handoffs, and 4 kneel downs

age 31 season - 9th TC with 4 teams, hope he put away some of the $10.4M he made

they've given Nate 3 years to develop

time to move on

Campbell postgame mentions:
  • Hooker moved the ball
  • Isaiah Williams made some good plays
  • Sione Vaki ran well
  • DE Nate Lynn showed versatility
  • DE Issac Ukwu had a good week & played well in the game
  • ILB Nate Jefferson caught his eye a couple times
  • Rakestraw played well in his early snaps
  • Fox was Fox, always great
  • Bates - good to see him hit the 53 yarder, right down the pipe; needs to work on his kickoffs, with the new rules placement is more important than having a big leg
  • need to see the tape to evaluate but that was his naked eye impressions; they have a lot to review from the joint practices & tonight

I know the QB wasn’t great & conditions sucked, but disappointing night for the X-WR candidates. Fountain put up a goose egg on 3 targets, Antoine Green went 3-13, DPJ 1-26 on 2 targets. Dauruce needs to show out in the last 2 preseason games if he’s going to make the 53-man.

8.5 yards a carry for Hooker, but also a concussion to show for it. And only 4 yards per pass attempt. Yet still somehow way better than Sudfield.

There is no question we need a decent backup QB. If things stand the way they are right now, we are dead in the water if Goff gets hurt.

I doubt there is a team out there right now that could win a Superbowl with their backup. That said, Sudfield has to go. Hooker might be ok but we need to see more of him the next couple of weeks, hopefully he clears protocol.

We aren't talking about worst case scenario. What if Goff sprains a knee or breaks his hand and missed 4 to 6 weeks. Hooker is a complete unknown and Sudfeld would be lucky to win one of those six games and now the Lions go from 5 - 2 to start the year to 6 and 7 on the outside looking in. They need a guy that can go 3 - 3 in those games or if Goff gets concussed can finish a game.
