2025 Detroit Lions: 3-1 Lions roll over Browns (168 Viewers)

I’d have to dig through the ARSB thread or this one to find it, but the number of times a Day 3 WR who posts a Top 24 season at any time in their career is extremely rare. Like since 2010 I wanna say the only three taken 4th round or later are AB, Diggs and Tyreek.

Football player. Def a Holmes/DC kind of guy.

_______________

Yesterday the Lions set an NFL team record for most 4th down attempts in one season.

Did it give success rate?

Did it give success rate?

200 WRs drafted 2010-20

152 rounds 5-7 and another 48 from the 4th

from the 5th-7th, 3 had a top 24 and 8 had a top 36

I couldn’t find the hit rate for 4th rounders for the entire period but for 2016-20 the hit rate was zero percent

IOW it has become super rare to have a guy taken Day 3 who becomes FF relevant

Many factors in play here. Lions lacking other competent WRs, Swift injury as pass catching back, lack of receiving TEs outside Hockensen (who is out from injury) and Goff's tendency to look short on the field were a quadfecta for ASB.

Astute fantasy players who recognized this situation have benefited greatly. But drafting ASB next year in fantasy drafts based on this years stats would likely be a mistake.

I heard this stat brought up in yesterday's DC presser, but turns out it's wrong.

Per Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press, the Lions lead the NFL with 36 fourth down attempts this season, as Campbell has set aside conventional thinking to try to give his undermanned team any edge he can find. They have converted 18 times (50 percent; tied for 17th in the NFL) including 10 times on 4th-and-1.

Detroit Lions lined up to set 4th down attempt record

The NFL record for fourth down attempts in a season is held by the New England Patriots in 1995, with 39 (they converted 17). The Patriots went 6-10 that season under Bill Parcells–who Campbell played for on the Dallas Cowboys from 2003-2005. That was of course a 16-game season, whereas Campbell and the 2021 Lions have 17 games. But the way it’s going, Campbell won’t need a 17th game to set the record.
Which is cool, but still don't understand being that aggressive all year, plus calling multiple fake punts and surprise onside kicks, but with less than 3 min left last Sunday he kicks a FG instead of going for it. that's not the first time we have seen him be borderline reckless in situations that didn't warrant it, and then curiously turtling up when they're in a position to close a game out with successful aggression. Just one of those areas you hope he will grow into and get better, but no excuses - this the NFL. Has to do better.

Seems slightly easier, this years schedule didn't seem like a last place one.

BL, I meant did it give the Lions success rate on 4th down tries.

haha sorry

18/36

Patriots record setting season it was like 17/39

10 times it’s been 4th & 1 but not sure how often they made those

also, have seen some discussion on r/DetroitLions about all those times he went for from inside their own 35. seemingly 100% of us in this thread  thought it was wrong at the time bc the game was close, or it was too early to be desperate. analytics says he was right and that  NFL coaches don’t go for it nearly enough.

then again, yesterday I saw an “analytics” guy arguing that from a math standpoint they should be kneeling in victory formation with 3, 5, 7 or 9 minutes left depending on how big the lead is at the time. if that’s the future of analytics then nope from me.

I would rather be too aggressive than not enough, but DC still needs to dial it back a notch. 50% isn't terrible, but just like 2 point plays I'd like to be able to make it more often than not or what's the point.

With the move to 17 games, they're now up to 3 (out of division) games differing between a "first place" schedule and a "last place" one. So there's never exactly been a huge advantage. Plus for the Lions, one of those differences was getting to play the Eagles instead of Washington or the Giants. Another was facing Atlanta instead of Carolina. Though they did face the AFC West team (Broncos) that's likely to finish last.

Amon-Ra St. Brown has been named the offensive rookie of the month for December. He caught 35 passes for 340 yards with three touchdowns and rushed four times for 26 yards.

He caught the game-winning, 11-yard touchdown from quarterback Jared Goff to defeat the Vikings in Week 13. Then he had another eight receptions for 90 yards with a TD in the 30-12 victory over Arizona in Week 15.

Through 15 games, St. Brown leads the Lions with 74 receptions and 692 yards.

No love for guys in the trenches, like Sewell and Slater and Humphrey.  Or Jevon Holland who's been consistently good. On defense, you need a pick-6 or bunch of sacks to stand out.

PFF Grades for the draft class through Week 16

  • McNeil 56.0

Only 3 of these score out as starter level.  The other 4 score out as replaceable. Most of them have a very limited sample of games/ plays to base the grades on so wouldn't draw too much of a conclusion.

Plus rookie cornerbacks Jerry Jacobs (64.8) and AJ Parker (50.2). Hopefully Jerry makes a full recovery bc he was outstanding for a rookie CB - IIRC Slay was mid-50s his rookie year. Parker always seemed like a depth guy, nothing more, wouldn't have gotten the snaps he did if we didn't go through DBs like socks this year. But Jacobs could be a starter in two years (I'm presuming Y1 he won't be all the way back.)

Thinking about Lions DBs....

Iffy has the size to develop into a press corner. We kind of knew going in he was going to be a project. Who knows what will become of Okudah. Amani Oruwariye is very similar to Trevon Diggs - just OK in coverage but great ball skills. He should be fully rehabbed by TC next year but he was awful in preseason and to start the year. But overall CB seems like it's covered for 2022, though as we know you can never have too much depth there.

Will Harris, incredibly, still has another year on his contract. He has been a putrid S for three years (though he actually played well as emergency CB v the Cards.) Walker is a FA, played well, they should bring him back. Not sure about Dean Marlowe's status but he was decent this year. Maybe move Okudah to the back line bc he doesn't seem like a good fit outside.

I don't mind if they draft a S in the middle/late rounds but i'd prefer they address the position group through mid/low level FA signings. Much more pressing needs at WR, LB and EDGE.

_______________

Alim looks like he'll be the NT for as long as he's healthy. I hope Levi develops, it was a new position for him and he was hurt in camp, but def a disappointing year. Derrick flashed at times - had a good game in the abysmal loss to the Bengals, and saw more significant time Week 13 onward. Hoping he continues to grow but the early returns are kind of meh.

The three offensive rookies looked better but as you alluded to the sample size for JJ is too small to render a verdict. He's not a thumper, not shifty enough to be a satellite back, hasn't shown much in pass pro. If everyone goes down he can fill in but IDK that he's any better than Ilgwebuike, Netflix or any random RB off the street.

ARSB and Sewell are foundational pieces. Penei might have a Jackie Slater career for Detroit if he stays healthy.

Solid overall, but tbh I hope we can get more than 2.5 starters from the 2022 draft.

Aidan Hutchinson was a nonfactor and even was manhandled vs. Georgia.

I thought so too until I was listening to ESPN Radio explain.  CollegeTeams during the regular season usually only have one film day.  Georgia had a month to prepare and probably have 6-8 film sessions if not more.

They had the TE and RB chip Hutch every pass play, the QB rolled away from Hutch and the game plan was quick passing. Nobody really pressured the whole game.

That being said I am not sold on Hutch as #1 pick but it made sense as to why he was ineffective.

Never will understand why the Lions do not and have not had a veteran retread that can come in and at least be able to run the offense.
There aren't many out there and what's the point this year? No reason to dump money into a veteran who isn't a part of the long term solution.

Not only this year. Been like this a long time.  Plus this is a so called Professional team. Put a somewhat decent product out there for us to watch as fans.

Pack blowing out Vikes so they should be resting players next week as they have NFC top seed locked. We have at least the # 2 draft pick regardless.

Wonder how bad the PFF grades will be for the Lions defensive players for this game?

My friend said "like a hot knife going through butter".

I agree during the Stafford years it was a problem many times.

I have no issue with a young QB that shows that has possible upside. Or if boyle was #3,  Boyle was no good in college.  I have a hard time believing he is better than Blough but if the staff thinks he is Blough should be cut.

Yes, if they don't draft a guy they need to get someone else as the #2. Blough and Boyle are practice squad at best.

There have been 9 successful onside kick recoveries in the NFL this year.

The #Lions have 3 of them.

_______________

ARSB needs 15 yards v GB next weekend to break the Lions rookie record for receiving yards held by RoY Williams, 2004.

The Lions first six draft picks (all except Jefferson) saw at 50% offense/defense snaps Week16.

As has often been the pattern, the offensive guys looked good to great, and the four defensive rookies struggled.

ARSB - four splash plays, six first downs, 64 YAC, first 100 game + 2 TDs

Won’t see an O-line grade for a few days. Lions runners were able to manage an impressive 4.3 yards a carry, but that was in spite of Detroit’s offensive line — 92.6% of the Lions rushing yards came after contact. The offensive line found more success in pass protection, as they allowed 10 pressures and zero sacks in the defeat.

Team only has six pressures, McNeil just 1,  Levi appears overmatched. Really poor pad level for Onwuzurike, wonder if that’s related to the back injury he was dealing with earlier in the year.

Barnes had no impact.

Iffy gave up coverage passer rating of 139.6 including two TDs.

_____________

Running backs Snap Counts

D'Andre Swift: (36) 57%

Jamaal Williams: (20) 32%

Craig Reynolds: (14) 22% -- 19 special teams snaps (59%)

Godwin Igwebuike: 19 special teams snaps (59%)

In his return, D'Andre Swift played 57% of offensive snaps. Even though Swift earned the most playing time, Jamaal Williams earned the most carries against Seattle with 11. Swift finished with 32 rushing yards on four carries and two receptions for seven yards.

Decker and Sewell put on covid list today. What else can go wrong?

Well at least neither can get injured in the last meaningless game of the season.

DC opened up his Monday presser saying they could test out by Sunday. They’ll go through the walkthroughs virtually and attend practices virtually so they’ll be prepared to start if they clear.

More concerned about not getting Jared Goff killed. We don’t need another game to evaluate Tim Boyle.

I know, I know, meaningless game (unless the Jags somehow pull off a win.) Well FTP, eh. Let’s go out on a high note.

Going to need Jared and Josh Reynolds back with Swift in non-decoy mode to stage a punchers change. Of course I’m presuming Goff will be physically ready. Not sure the extent of his knee injury. If he needs a cleanup procedure the they might as well shut him down & start his off-season program.

Defense was so off in Seattle. Super disappointing bc they’ve had some decent games in the second half of the season. Giving up scores on 9 straight possess is beyond ridiculous. Pass rush was non-existent, and the run defense was a product of young defenders being exploited. Seattle ran a lot of motion + counter plays and we ended up out of position way too often. It’s a teaching moment for Glenn Co but we’ve got to do a better job of maintaining gap responsibility.

Week 18 and I’m still dreaming up ways we can pull off an upset. Well, FTP man, that’s why.
