2025 Detroit Lions: Game 1 Lions vs Packers. (38 Viewers)

  • Mo Ibrahim (dislocated hip) becomes the 7th Detroit player to suffer a season-ending injury. Tough break for the UDFA rookie but this is a guy who tore his achilles in 2021, multiple ankle issues, knee this summer, no real plans to utilize him.
  • Kalif Raymond left the game late with a left leg injury but thankfully Campbell said it was just cramps. Malcolm Rodriguez left the game with an ankle (I didn’t even realize he played FB to start the day.) No other reported injuries, so one positive for the day.
  • 38-6 is embarrassing. Got curb stomped. Ravens win the toss & elected to receive (whoa), BAL 7-play 75 yards TD, Lions 3 n out, BAL 11-play 68 yards TD, Lions 3 n out, BAL 8-plays 92 yards TD, Lions 3 n out, BAL 6-plays 80 yards TD. 22:15 into the game BAL had 32-plays, 315 yards, DET had 9-plays, 13 yards, 28-0, burn the tape we’re on to the Raiders.
  • 1991 Lions lost the opener in WAS 0-45, won the next 5 to start 5-1, lost week 8 (after a bye) 3-35 to the 49ers, won 8 or their next 10 including the divisional round 38-6 over Dallas. Lost the NFCCG 10-41. Crazy they lost 3 g to Tier 1 squads, went 13-2 v the rest of the schedule.
  • Have some perspective: 5-2 after 7 is still a good start. Vikings are 2-4 facing 49ers on MNF, Packers lost, Bears are lost, flush this turd, we’re going to be fine. Likely 2.5 game lead at worst 2.0 going into MNF v Raiders (3-4, -49 pt diff.) 1st MNF game at Ford Field [in 5 years]. As long as this one doesn’t bleed into next week, we are on task.
  • We’re not the 3rd best team in the NFL, we are not a team of destiny contending for their first Super Bowl. We ARE trying to win our first division title in 32 years. Let’s accomplish that objective before we start worrying about seeding and dreaming. Let’s not lie to ourselves and say that’s not good enough for Y3. It would be a massive achievement & who knows what could happen if we get in there. Nothing has changed, we’re still a good team in control of the division.
  • Potentially 6-2 going into the bye? You gonna tell me you wouldn’t take that after the preseason? Perspective.
  • Once again a mobile QB womps us. The good news is we don’t face another RPO QB until the playoffs.
  • We are still a tier above middle class. Until we get more dudes on defense we are not elite. We won’t be elite. But we can still have a pretty amazing year and win the division title. Let’s go earn that home playoff game, our fans deserve it.
  • ARSB had a bad, bad drop and bobbled another that from the big screen in stadium looked like a no catch. When St can’t catch easy ones you know it just ain’t your day.
  • Got nothing on Jamo. 21 targets, 5 catches, 5 drops, caused an interception today running the wrong route, another time broke inside when JG threw an out with anticipation. Stop telling me about his potential. The last 2 at $5.378M no longer GTD, 5th option is questionable. Get it together or we move on.
  • Hutch is Batman, but we need a Robin. We knew that 6 months ago though.
  • Cam Sutton is solid, tough break losing Jerry Jacobs on Saturday (he had played so much better weeks 4-6.) I cannot explain the coaching staff’s misplaced faith in Will Harris, you guys see the data I’ve posted. He’s bad at coverage, tackling, special teams, penalties. Start developing Dorsey + Gilmore + Lucas, #25 is always the weak link.
  • Road games are so much fun! You guys gotta experience this, man it’s been an amazing weekend. Made so many friends. Not just that…yesterday we hung out at this black artists gallery with about 8-10 young creatives. The owner gifted wifey a collage she was admiring off the gallery walls. So many good vibes the past two days. The game is almost incidental. Would recommend, would do again.
Remaining schedule:

What an amazing ballpark! TV doesn’t do it justice.

Honestly, have had such a good time this weekend. Staying two more days.

The game says more about the Ravens than the Lions. Lamar is getting into the new system. Flowers gives him another weapon and they can cobble together a running game with what they have. They're contenders in the AFC, and look better than Buffalo and Cincinnati at this point.

The Lions might have been hyped up a little too much, but this doesn't really hurt them. They got waxed by a great team. That doesn't make them mediocre all of a sudden. They're still winning that division and hosting a playoff game, and that's a great accomplishment for Detroit in 2023.

This.

We could have addressed D-Line, found Hutch a sack partner. We could have added a true #1 CB.

We traded back for a weapon. To say “I didn’t agree with our draft” would be a massive understatement; I was shocked at how the draft unfolded. Every. single. pick. was. a. surprise.

We keep getting told it’s OK our first rounders play like second rounders bc our second rounders play like first rounders. It’s OK we traded back bc we landed LaPorta.

We say it in different ways bc we have different perspectives but I’m fairly confident @Da Guru and @Ilov80s have the same conclusion. Let’s see how this works out. They’ve earned that much.

Personally I’m not judging then after 7 games. Especially given that the team is 5-2 and already have a 2 game lead in the loss column.
  • Objective #1 - win a division title. It’s been 32 years, and that was the 5-team NFC Central. We have never won the NFC North. We are on pace for a 12-win season that accomplishes goal #1.
  • We can compete with anyone. Full stop. We’re still the only NFC team to ever beat Mahomes [in KC.]
  • It’s never easy to win on the road and we’re 3-1; all three of those wins were quality games. Beat the defending champs, our nemesis of the last 30 years, and the NFC South division leaders - no cheap wins.
  • No games we deserved to lose, clearly played better than our opponents five times.
We went into the draft with the second most draft capital. It would have been difficult to not improve. The test isn’t in September & October and it’s not a 1-year evaluation. The draft will be judged on how far we go in January (& February) the next couple years.

We all want the same thing. How to get there is the mystery that has confounded previous regimes throughout the entirety of the Super Bowl era.

Still a huge fan Dan Stan & still believe Brad Holmes is an elite talent evaluator, and both bring massive upside to the table. The team hasn’t peaked, they’ll get better, and you can say the same about the leadership.

Baltimore looked pretty grabby with our dline those first few drives allowing Lamar to sit back and do whatever he wanted. Finally got a holding call the third or fourth drive but it was too late. Doubt it would have made much of a difference anyway as you have to score points to win. The reality is that each week can be a challenge to win in this league if you do not come to play. We didn’t look ready for that game in any phase and got punched in the mouth. As bad as it seems I think getting absolutely toyed with will benefit us for the remainder of the year. A good reminder that nothing is given to you.

ya think?

IDK

watch the RT on Hutch and the RG on Alim - take your pick

Do I not understand the rules?
  • Are you allowed to lock onto the ends of the shoulder pads? Wasn't being called yesterday but I'm happy to entertain interpretations of that aspect.

  • As I understand it, the interpretation if the rushers swims under gets around the OL - and the offensive player's arm is now across the chest/under the chin - the OL has a beat to disengage. It's not an automatic holding call. But that's EXACTLY what they threw on Penei Sewell after Aidan recovered the fumble and we made a couple first downs. FTR I'm OK with that interpretation. Hutch and every other elite pass rusher can put the OL into a holding call 10+ times a game by initiating it. So be consistent, don't call it on our OL when the D causes the hold.

Agree💯 Even the best GMs have misses. Pretty sure Holmes would do things a little differently give the chance but there are no redos.

Gibby and Campbell will contribute, Martin? Still waiting. Williams has to get it going and contribute to this team. I hate to harp on Williams but Lions need him.

This was like the Carolina loss last year. It happened, like DC said "Time to refocus"

I have to say have much more respect for Jackson. Because he is such a threat to run, running less has made him more difficult to defend. One step forward and he freezes the defense, then flicks a pass. Then when he does run he is so effective.

Really don't want to see him for a long time.

Pound the Raiders on MNF and all will be forgotten.

If Campbell was at say his 3-year peak (like we’re seeing from Barnes) he’s not going to have the same impact as a CB from that same draft slot. Or anywhere near the value an Edge or IDL at 6 we could have had.

But I don’t care to have the alternate history conversations. They do that on my battlefield & history forums, just not my jam.

Down the road he’s a solid starter. Don’t think he will ever be a Fred Warner or Bobby Jackson but he can be a middle of the D rock for 8 years. He’s a piece, not the game changer we still lack outside of Hutch.

****************

Have to see the PFF grade tomorrow & All 22 on Wednesday but Paschal seemed to have a good game. No one else stood out in a positive way.

With the trade deadline approaching, it's going to be interesting to see what Brad Holmes decides to do. In my opinion, the top priority is to get a decent cornerback. Behind the starters we don't have any depth. Will Harris is terrible and the other options don't have any experience.

If Holmes wants to trade for an impact player, I'd love to see Holmes go after Danielle Hunter. That would take the defense to another level. Hutchinson needs some help on the other side.

It's hard to say what Holmes will do because he hasn't been in a position with respect to having a legit contender. But I do expect him to get help for the secondary.

The offensive line (and everyone else) was bad yesterday and wasn't all that good against Tampa imo. I think we are really missing Jonah Jackson.

Snap Counts Week 7

Offense

Quarterbacks

Jared Goff: 75 (100%)
Teddy Bridgewater: N/A

Despite the game being well out of hand in the second half, the Lions decided to keep Jared Goff in the game to the bitter end.

Running backs

Jahmyr Gibbs: 65 (87%)
Craig Reynolds: 7 (9%) — 1 special teams snaps (5%)
(FB) Malcolm Rodriguez: 2 (3%) — 12 (57%)
Devine Ozigbo: 0 (0%) — 13 (62%)
Mohamed Ibrahim: 0 (0%) — 6 (29%)
David Montgomery: OUT

Coach Dan Campbell said Jahmyr Gibbs was going to have to carry the load and he wasn’t kidding. The rookie’s 65 offensive snaps were 23 more than he’s ever gotten in an NFL game. Unsurprisingly, he turned that into his best offensive output thus far, totaling 126 yards and his first NFL touchdown.

Elsewhere, the Lions put linebacker Malcolm Rodriguez in at fullback for the first time in his career.

“We’re always talking about how do we maximize the roster?” Campbell said after the game. “We’ve been heavy on defense going to the game with the guys that we have. Normally we’re carrying 23 there. Offensively, we teeter between the tight ends or the receivers or halfbacks that you’re trying to bring. We felt like let’s give Rodrigo a go at fullback.”

With Reynolds limited due to injury, practice squad call-ups Ibrahim and Ozigbo were on special teams duty. Unfortunately, Ibrahim suffered a dislocated hip in the second half, which required immediate surgery at a nearby hospital.

Tight ends

Sam LaPorta: 54 (72%)
Brock Wright: 26 (35%) — 11 (52%)
James Mitchell: 0 (0%) — 3 (14%)

LaPorta continues to be a main player on offense, while Brock Wright’s role significantly diminished. Detroit had to abandon the run game early, which meant a significant drop in the amount of 12 personnel usage (one back, two tight ends).

In his return from injury, Mitchell was limited to just three special teams snaps—a mild disappointment.

Wide receivers

Amon-Ra St. Brown: 73 (97%)
Josh Reynolds: 55 (73%)
Jameson Williams: 33 (44%)
Antoine Green: 33 (44%) — 11 (52%)
Kalif Raymond: 27 (36%) — 2 (10%)
Marvin Jones Jr.: OUT

St. Brown was another player battling to the bitter end that probably didn’t have to.

Interestingly, with so much garbage time in the second half, the Lions not only used the opportunity to give Jameson Williams a lot of snaps, but rookie Antoine Green nearly doubled his offensive snaps for the entire season. The rookie garnered just a single target but was not able to bring it in.

Offensive line

Taylor Decker: 75 (100%)
Halapoulivaati Vaitai: 75 (100%)
Frank Ragnow: 75 (100%)
Graham Glasgow: 75 (100%)
Penei Sewell: 75 (100%)
Kayode Awosika: DNP
Dan Skipper: DNP
Colby Sorsdal: DNP
Jonah Jackson: RULED OUT

You know it’s a sad day when none of your offensive linemen play a single special teams snap (meaning there were no kick attempts).

That said, Vaitai made his return to the starting lineup, displacing Glasgow to left guard and shifting Kayode Awosika to the bench.

Defense

EDGE:

Aidan Hutchinson: 54 (90%)
John Cominsky: 37 (62%) — 6 (29%)
Josh Paschal: 17 (28%)
Romeo Okwara: 10 (17%) — 6 (29%)
Julian Okwara: 8 (13%) — 9 (43%)
Charles Harris: INACTIVE

The Lions made the surprising decision to make Charles Harris a healthy scratch. While Harris hadn’t been playing great through six games, he was a defensive captain and wasn’t noticeably getting outplayed by anyone in particular. Here’s the reasoning Campbell gave for the roster choice:

“Talked to (Charles) earlier in the week and it was—last week we brought nine d-linemen into the game and this week, Paschal’s coming back and we were only going to bring eight. So, it was kinda, ‘Alright, do we bring JO (Julian Okwara) or do we bring Charles?’ That’s really where we were at. We wanted to give JO a shot at it.”

Campbell said they’ll continue to evaluate that gameday roster spot and reiterated that this isn’t necessarily a benching they’ll move forward with.

“Certainly Charles is a guy who puts the work in, he’s one of our captains, he puts the work in,” Campbell said. “He was busting his *** in practice once again, and he knows this isn’t it. This isn’t it for him. He could very well be up next week.”

DT:

Benito Jones: 40 (67%) — 6 (29%)
Alim McNeill: 38 (63%) — 6 (29%)
Isaiah Buggs: 33 (55%)
Levi Onwuzurike: INACTIVE
Brodric Martin: INACTIVE

Snaps counts are beginning to converge a bit among the interior defenders, as Isaiah Buggs gets more involved in the game. After his benching for the first two weeks, Buggs has seen a slow increase in playing time.

Meanwhile, with Paschal’s return, it was another healthy scratch week for Levi Onwuzurike. He has now been inactive in two of seven games.
Linebackers

Alex Anzalone: 60 (100%)
Jack Campbell: 54 (90%) — 11 (52%)
Derrick Barnes: 41 (68%) — 3 (14%)
Malcolm Rodriguez: 1 (2%) — 12 (57%)
Jalen Reeves-Maybin: 0 (0%) — 21 (100%)
Anthony Pittman: 0 (0%) — 21 (100%)

Jack Campbell played the most snaps of his young career, as the Lions continue to play him in the SAM (EDGE) linebacker role. That allows Detroit to keep Derrick Barnes at MIKE, where he is playing well. Here’s what linebackers coach Kelvin Sheppard said last week about why he likes Campbell in that edge defender role:

“The ability that we have with that on-ball player to stack back off the ball and it be something natural,” Sheppard said. “Whereas a guy like Charles (Harris), J.O., they can do it absolutely, but it’s not natural for them and you’re asking them to get you out the down vs. ‘Alright, let's stack Jack off the ball. We’re good. Let’s put him on the ball.’ And then what it does is he keeps the offense up all night. Now, they don’t where this player is going to be, where he’s aligning, what his role will be.”

Cornerbacks

Cam Sutton: 57 (95%)
Will Harris: 50 (83%) — 4 (19%)
Brian Branch: 30 (50%)
Khalil Dorsey: 10 (17%) — 21 (100%)
Steven Gilmore: 2 (3%)
Chase Lucas: 0 (0%) —21 (100%)
Jerry Jacobs: RULED OUT

With the late injury to Jacobs, Will Harris stepped in at the other starting cornerback position. And with Detroit cognizant of the Ravens’ running game, they didn’t run a lot of nickel, limiting Brian Branch’s return from injury to just half of the defensive snaps.

Late in the game, the Lions replaced Harris with Khalil Dorsey and Steven Gilmore also got his first NFL action on defense.

Safety

Tracy Walker: 59 (98%) — 3 (14%)
Kerby Joseph: 55 (92%) — 7 (33%)
Ifeatu Melifonwu: 4 (7%) — 17 (81%)

After taking a nasty helmet-to-helmet collision with Odell Beckham Jr., Joseph was forced to get evaluated for a concussion. We didn’t get an update from Campbell after the game, but Joseph seemed to indicate via social media that he was fine.

Special teams

Jack Fox: 5 (24%)
Scott Daly: 4 (19%)
Riley Patterson: 1 (5%)

Jack Fox was back on kickoff duties, and with no field goal or extra point attempts, it was a slow day for Riley Patterson. Detroit let him try their onside kick attempt, though.

Right now the losses of Mosely, Johnson and Houston are catching up to the defense. All three can be impact type of players. Hurts not to have them.

Respectfully, not sure that resonates be we didn’t have any of those three whilst winning four straight by 14, 14, 18 & 14.

We had a bad day. Not too many position groups were exempt. Happens - every year all but 1-2 teams have blowouts & clunkers. That’s why coaches always say not much to learn from those kind of games. It’s not like Baltimore unlocked a secret code every team will use against us ROS.

Clean a few things up, turn the page, move forward. Crying about injuries is silly. Every team in the NFL has injuries.

Dan Campbell’s Monday presser after blowout loss to Ravens

I have so much respect for Coach. This was a 10 minute masterclass in accountability. 100% on him for not having them better prepared. Promises that his very prideful players won’t allow this to spill over into the MNF game Week 8 v LV Raiders.

Not too many specifics but:
  • Kerby Joseph cleared the concussion protocol on the sidelines and in the locker room after the OBJ cheap shot. Won’t have any trouble practicing in full or playing the next game.
  • Mo I is back in Detroit and walking, though with great difficulty and pain. Season over career uncertain, just needed to get him to the hospital to put him under and put the hip back in the socket. Hard to say LT effect.
  • MJJ personal issue remains a personal issue. Reporters tried to pry for details but none given.
  • Game plan was fairly simple and doesn’t question it, execution was poor. One example they were calling tight press man and the DBs were playing off.
  • No show games are tough but every team has one. It’s only an issue if it continues.
  • They will NOT “burn the tape.” There is a lot to glean from it. Trust your teammates, don’t be a hero trying to two jobs. They’ll mean from it.
Love his leadership style. Protect the player and take the blame, no calling anyone out or shirking off who is responsible.

Has the lack of crispness and fluttering on Goff's passes been explained? Has been mentioned that this wasn't noticeable in Jackson's throws.

Difference in arm strength showing up in windy conditions?> Goff being jittery and off due to fierce Ravens pass rush?

Ravens have been consistent playoff contenders and with Jackson healthy look very legit.

Playing on the road against a good defense can derail any team. Saw it the previous week when SF lost to Cleveland and Eagles lost to Jets. Hopefully Lions can be included in this group. But the big doubt is in how thoroughly they were routed reminded me of The NE game of last year.

Goff being jittery

That was my feeling in the stadium but waiting until I see the All 22 on Wednesday. The preliminary PFF grades only put 2 of the 5 sacks on the OL, the rest were on Jared converting pressure into sacks.

On the season through 6 g his time to throw (TTT) has been 2.4 seconds, that's a function of their scheme - ball comes out quick in Ben Johnson's offense. Yesterday his TTT was 2.61, e.g., he wasn't getting the ball out as fast. Versus BAL:
  • 19 pressures week 7, was sacked 26.3% of the times the pocket collapsed
  • was 14.3% coming in - 70 pressures, 10 sacks
  • had 1 Big Time Throw (BTT) and 2 Turnover Worthy Plays (TWP)
  • Came in with 9 BTT and only 3 TWP, one of the best %s and ratios in the league for those two stats

Numbers and viewing the broadcast aren't enough, you need to marry the analytics with what you see on film. You really need the All 22 Film wide angle to see the fronts, coverage, and schemes, so not totally sure what was the cause of the magical disaster I witnessed.

Still, being at a game was awesome, nothing beats the camaraderie of being with your people. the pageantry (Baltimore Ravens Marching Band), terrible renditions of Gridiron Heroes (aka Forward Down the Field) in the bar, meeting Detroiters and Londoners and folks from all over Michigan and Toronto, folks who go to six road game a year and have been to 22 or 26 NFL stadiums, man alvie it was so fun making connections and hearing about their road warrior lifestyles. Those are true fans! Lot of them only know each other through Lions road games. What a life, eh?!

Going to a game was a real treat for wifey and I. We're also immersing ourselves in Baltimore culture. Made friends with a gallery owner a few doors down, have stopped in to chat with him every day, such a generous and loving soul. Full on tour of local cuisine, made a dash out to Fort McHenry for some history (& had a great convo with a knowledgeable seasoned ranger), all and all just a home run of a getaway. Still have tomorrow to tick a few more small bucket list items before we grab the Acela back to NYC after an early dinner.

Go to a road game if you have the means! Come in early and get to know other Lions fans. One of the best experiences I have had in a long, long time. The game itself was incidental. Ravens fans weren't gonna steal my joy, every time they tried to give me **** I just came back 2x harder and faster (all in good fun.) They're not as friendly as Midwesterners or Floridians per the Lions fans I met, but I respect the franchise and the traditions they hold. It's serious business for them.

I feel like we pushed the Lions as the SB contender , new kid on the block WAYYYYYYYYY too much. They are after all , the Lions. I'm no fan of the Ravens but that was a take them behind the woodshed moment yesterday. not sure how deeetroit recovers from this. good morning football on NFLN was all over the Lions like a cheap suit for weeks. now what??
They have some serious talent but they're likely a year or two away. the window is only opening for them ,and that's a good thing, the opposite of the Bills. everyone roots for the Lions. wish they could get it together.but a flop like this is criminal for a so-called contender.

Well after both SF and Eagles lost Lions were next in line to be anointed. Stephen A wasn’t too happy with the Lions flop after he had moved them to #1.

It’s a long season things change week to week. Some past SB teams have gotten blown out during the regular season but came back.

All of a sudden those games with Minny are going to be very important. Was rooting for SF last night. My boy Moody missed another 40 yarder, then nails a 55 yarder.

What did Marvin Jones do?

No one knows. Coach said “It’s private.” Announced on social media he is “stepping away from the team to take care of personal family matters.”

3rd all time in club history for receiving TDs. Immensely respected in the locker room. Hasn’t played well this season but I feel like he had a very positive impact on the young WRs.

Sending good vibes toward MJJ, his wife & their six kids. By all accounts a class act.

Justin Rogers reporting he is not retiring but by mutual consent he will be released.

Packers vs Vikings this week in a pick em game. Not sure who to root for there.
I’m rooting for Pack see them as less threatening. Love has been bad. Vikings defense improving.

I think the Vikings are definitely coming on strong a little bit now. O-line looking decent. Defence getting better. Would have been good to have got 1 game against them already out of the way tbh

By default I always root against the Packers. FTP is a lifestyle.

We are the biggest threat to ourselves, more than any of our division rivals. We have firm control of the division and just need to keep on keeping on.

Vikings D is blitzing a lot but they’ve given up 17 TDs. They don’t have the dudes IMO to run what Flores is preaching. They have had trouble running the ball.

But hey, top of the cap for them winning without JJ. That shows ya something.

Yeah, poor choice of words on my part, too pejorative.

Not sure how to pull data on who the most injured teams are since Man Games Lost content is premium only.

But just looking at Spotrac.com they have an Injured Reserve tracker:
  • Current Players on IR: 9 - which is the 9th most out of 32
  • Current Cap on IR: $16,682,392 - 11th
  • Cap % on IR: 7.55% - 11th
  • Total Players who are or have been on IR: 12 - 6th
That's just IR, doesn't take into account players who have missed games but were not placed on IR.
  • Gibbs 2g
  • Montgomery 2g
  • St Brown 1g
  • Decker 2g
  • Jackson 2g
  • Vaitai 3g
  • Skipper
  • Branch 2g
  • Jacobs
  • Joseph 2g
It's a lot. Overall they have done a good job handling it. Scored their season high when ARSB was out, Glasgow has been outstanding at RG, Penei played well at LT when he had to switch sides, all the young OL stepped up to cover the injuries at both G spots, Melifonwu played well at Slot CB, etc.

FWIW the coverage grades were (obviously) not great but not as terrible as I expected. The whole team stunk - hell, Frank Ragnow gave up 4 pressures, Hutch missed 2 tackles, Barnes had by far his worst game, Goff caused 3 of the 5 sacks turning a good pocket with pressure into a sack. We couldn't complete anything over 10 yards (couple balls to Josh when it was already out of hand.) 3 official drops, one by Amon-Ra, two by Jamo.

Lone bright spots: Taylor Decker had his best game of the season, and Gibbs played well. Especially in pass pro, where they gave him 6 pass blocking opportunities - he had only 4 total in the first 6 games.

We're on to the Raiders.

RB Jermar Jefferson is back in Honolulu blue and silver 👀

Today, the Lions announced the following roster moves:

➡️ Released veteran WR Marvin Jones Jr. (personal matter)

➡️Placed RB Mohamed Ibrahim on ractice squad/injured

➡️Signed RB Jermar Jefferson to the practice squad

  • Goff (83.0 PFF offense grade) gets a cakewalk bounce-back spot against a Las Vegas secondary that's likely missing two-of-four starters, including No. 1/slot cornerback Nate Hobbs (69.6 PFF slot-coverage grade).

  • Goff combines the No. 2-ranked adjusted completion (80.4%) and turnover-worthy play (1.8%) rates for the No. 10-ranked yards per passing attempt (7.4) among 33 NFL quarterbacks with at least 100 dropbacks. His 2.57-second average time to throw ranks No. 6.

    Goff is a high-floor QB1 with multi-touchdown upside.

  • Hobbs remains sidelined following a Week 3 ankle sprain, priming Detroit No. 1/slot receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown (83.5 PFF receiving grade) for an elite WR1 showing against backup slot cornerback Amik Robertson (53.4 PFF slot-coverage grade). Among 43 NFL slot cornerbacks with at least 25 slot receiver-coverage snaps, Robertson’s 2.41 yards allowed per coverage snap rank No. 38 and his 7.4% explosive pass plays allowed rate ties for No. 39.

  • PFF’s WR/CB matchup chart gives St. Brown an excellent 92.5 receiving matchup advantage rating over Robertson.

  • Las Vegas’ mid-tier linebacker corps (40.3 PFF tight end-coverage grade) allows 2.95 yards per tight end-coverage snap, No. 17 among NFL-team linebacker corps. Detroit tight end Sam LaPorta’s (69.6 PFF receiving grade) 1.79 yards per route run (YPRR) rank No. 4 among 34 NFL tight ends with at least 120 receiving snaps.

PFF’s TE matchup chart gives LaPorta a 10.0% receiving matchup advantage rating over linebacker Robert Spillane (68.4 PFF coverage grade), No. 6 on the week.

  • PFF’s OL/DL matchup chart gives Detroit a 16.0% pass-blocking matchup advantage rating over Las Vegas, No. 9 on the week. Las Vegas two-time-defending Pro Bowl edge rusher Maxx Crosby (90.8 PFF pass-rush grade) lines up at the defensive-left end outside position (LEO) on 76.0% of pass-rushing snaps and accounts for 6.5 of Las Vegas’ 13 NFL sacks.

  • Goff’s elite offensive tackles will keep him upright against Las Vegas’ one-dimensional pass rush.

  • RT Penei Sewell’s (84.2 PFF pass-blocking grade) 99.5 pass-block efficiency and 1.1% quarterback pressure rate allowed both rank No. 1 among 71 NFL offensive tackles with at least 100 pass-blocking snaps.

  • LT Taylor Decker’s 78.5 PFF pass-blocking grade ranks No. 13.
Detroit's WR corps:
  • Man coverage rank: 23rd (19.7%)
  • Zone coverage rank: 12th (77.7%)

We have been critical of how Jack Campbell has played in his first 7 games. Thought it would be interesting to look at how he ranks against his peers. Writing this without knowing the answer but was pretty shocked Connor Rodgers & Trevor Sikkema had him on their All Rookie team this week alongside the Vikings UDFA ace. Unsurprisingly, Sam LaPorta and Brian Branch made the team as well.
  • 78.7 MIN UDFA Ivan Pace Jr 16th out of 82 graded LBs
  • 59.6 LAC 86th Daiyan Henley non-qualifier (1 snap)
  • 52.1 BUF 92nd Dorian Williams 72nd out of 82
  • 49.3 BAL 87th Trenton Simpson non-qualifier (6 snaps)
  • 44.3 DET 18th Jack Campbell 79th out of 82
NOTE - highest run defense grade of all rookie LBs 67.3
  • 43.9 HOU 169th Henry To'oTo'o 80th out of 82
  • 29.7 DEN 68th Drew Sanders non-qualifier (122 snaps)
  • N/A DAL 90th DeMarvion Overshown torn ACL preseason

Any news on Monty? I see him listed as questionable for MNF, but no new info if they plan on waiting to after the bye to bring him back

TIL

Marvin Jones had a personal video guy with him all training camp (and for years prior). The receiver said he didn't know what he'll do with the terabytes of footage, football and personal. Might just be a personal project, but could make for an interesting documentary some day.

Not crying about, just said it is catching up. Lions are still not deep enough to absorb those kind of losses. Really no team is.

Just frustrating. Lions secondary was a weak spot last season. They go out and make it a strength, then Mosely and Johnson out for the season, Branch and Jacobs banged up as well. Tough to overcome game to game. Just frustrating.

Would be surprised if Hutch matches his sack total of last year they way he is getting blocked. Looks like a pinball at times with the double teams, the TE chips, and the RB picking him up. Has to be sore on Mondays.

This is why getting a pass rusher at the trade deadline is top priority.

Well it’s a priority for ten other teams as well. Not saying we shouldn’t do it, but it’s going to be tough getting it done at a price we like.

Mid level CB for depth would be another piece I’d like to see them add.

Not my favorite guy but if he’s in any kind of shape bring Suh in for the last 6 game push + playoff run. Any IDL who could give Alim & Buggs a hand at generating pressure.

***************

Constant refrain when we have defensive failings:
  • Have to win our one on ones
  • Trust the man beside you will do his job, you focus on yours
  • Coaches Coach and players play; the plan was good, we just didn’t execute it
  • You say it looked like soft coverage? Well that wasn’t the call, we wanted press man but the players didn’t do what we asked of them.
Rinse and repeat.

I sincerely hope AG gets a head coaching job this offseason. Lions will get two 3rds for the minority hire and the team will get a DC capable of making adjustments.
