2025 Las Vegas Raiders thread - ☠ Matadors on the O-line ☠ (16 Viewers)

Overall, as much as I actually like Jeanty and believe he is the future of the position, as long as the OL plays like it did last night I am going to have trouble forgetting how much I wanted them to take Membou or Banks at #6 and go with a RB in the 2nd.
I was extremely vocal about this. Henderson was there in the 2nd when we traded down too.

A note about the OL - Chip Kelly was MASTERFUL last year with what he did with TOSU's OL over the course of the season. Our OL was decimated by injury and borderline bad at times but the job they did in the playoff run was special. A lot of that was about play design - I'd frequently see defenders whoop the scheme, but the ball was always past them by that time, or going the other direction. It will be interesing to see what he can do and how well Geno can play within it - Will Howard was brilliant in the playoff run.

Please don’t circumvent the language filter with that TOSU stuff. Tia

Well let's hope the two OL rookies can displace some of the bum starters soon. That Jeanty statistic is ridiculous.
I've been wondering about them but, I haven't heard anything about Rogers or Grant from TC or the last two weeks.

They don't have a snap yet, this season and I'm not sure if they have been on the game day roster even.

Meh - he's not very explosive and seems to be suprisingly easy to tackle. It might help if that OL could block worth a damn.
I don't know which game you watched but, that seems to be objectively untrue. The Chargers D outplayed the Raiders O for sure but, my guess is Derwin James's Jockstrap thinks Jeanty is plenty difficult to bring down.
I watched the game and I stand by my comment. For such a powerful runner who is able to run over guys, he was getting tackled in the open field rather easily on some plays where his feet seemed to get tangled up and he was unable to churn forward. His blockers certainly didn't do him any favors but I was expecting some evasiveness based on his college tape, and he hasn't shown that yet at the NFL level. He didn't have a great night and not all of that is on the OL. He has yet to show that he's a special player worthy of the hype or high draft position - jury's still out but the early returns aren't great.
I think you should reconsider your position. Every carry & target from last night.

-He demonstrated on his first touch last night that he will make a single defender pay more often than not.
-His second carry he got tripped up by Mayer.
-#3 met immediately by three defenders at the line.
-#4 bad target from Geno, tipped by defender.
-#5 bounced outside when he probably should have taken the lane off the RT slipped an ankle tackle fell forward for two.
-#6 converts the 3rd and 2 with a tough run up the gut for 3, again met by three defenders.
-#7 posterized Derwin James, ankle tackle falls forward for another 3.
-#8 (1:06) This is my favorite play: 7 yards between the RT & RG, take a minute to rewind a few times and watch how Derwin just bounces off Jeanty. He's immediately hit again low and the defender hangs on for dear life. Jeanty goes after another 2 yards.
-#9 7-8 yards off the RT sheds DE arm tackle, taken down at the legs falling forward for another 2.
-#10 posterized Henley (the hero for the Chargers last night), similarly Tony Jefferson whiffs, gets spun out of bounds after 5 yards.
-#11 off LT for 4 grinds forward after contact for 2-3 more yards.
-#12 3 yard swing pass jukes one defender tries and fails to hurdle another.
-#13 0 yards gained, stood up at the LoS by the DT.
-#14 4 yards off RT 2-3 defenders take him down.
-#15 swing pass for loss of 1 yards. Straight up great play by Tahib Still.

At no point did he, go down easily. I can't imagine anyone not being optimistic about his performance.
I put a link to all Jeanty's opportunities from Monday night

YMMV but, I came away much more optimistic about his performance so far. He took "the best safety in the history of the NFL" to task, twice and badly. The spin move, of course, but he also Christian Okoye in Excellent Conditioned him at one point.

I think, with the state of the OL a LT2 rookie season seems a lot more likely than a Saquon Barkley rookie season but, this kid flashes IMO.

Watched again closely, the IOL got their doors blown off. It amazes me that time and again the same teams fail to prioritize OL year after year after year and then watch all the strong OL teams progress into the playoffs. It depresses me that we are one of them. We all watched Emmitt not-elite Smith run WILD behind that DAL OL while Barry shouldda-goat Sanders had to be Barry just to sniff top 5 rushing stats. A great RB cannot make an OL nearly like a great OL can blow open holes for NFL-caliber RB's. Look how many Aaron Jones and Isaiah Pacheco level talents can be big time producers over the years. Einstein had something to say about that I believe.

If we can't coacch them up then we need to be aggressive on the raw talent acquisition part until we get it right - draft OL in the 1st and 2nd every year and just carry the young guys until they develop or age out of cheap rookie contracts and then blow your wad on 1-2 higher level FA. We could have gotten a Kolton Miller level guard for the price of Cappa + our spare cap space and that's despite our 70 million in dead money. How the **** do we take a dead money hit on Amari freaking Cooper????? We gave that bum a check up front????

Bottom 5 in OL spending.

Seriously WTF. Amari pulled $1.75 MM for ten days of training then quitting?!? That is #1 ******** right there.

Just look at the first five names below and you can see exactly why the Raiders still suck. Just stop with the paying outside free agents to anything but small/mid dollar and/or prove it deals.

No doubt that has an impact on the cap decisions, but how do the Raiders compare to other teams carrying dead money? (I might be a little worried to actually find out)

So... you're saying the Raiders are better than the Eagles?

Nice.

That performance was pathetic. Worst OL play I have seen from them in years and, that's saying something.

Turned off mid third.

I was right to not be happy when they signed Pete. Another wasted season.

Has nothing to do with Pete Carroll. Bad OL and bad personnel moves not attacking it in the draft and FA. Deficient in talent at a lot of positions, we knew who this team was.

Whatever. The last possession before the half was also old school mentality. 3-17 from your 34 with 40 seconds against a team that has put up 240 yards already and are running at will.

Draw play to Laube for 2 yards. Punt. Washington field goal.

They didn't even try to convert. I get that logic, avoid a sack, int etc. but, it's outdated thinking.

How is Jeanty not getting the 4th and 1 call late in the 4th? I’m sure Laube is a hard worker, but a lottery pick RB has to get the ball.

Pete Carroll is going to lose this team if he hasn't already if he doesn't correct the monumental disaster that is his son as OL Coach. The warning sign was swapping JPJ and Meredith between C and OG this preseason. The death knell is not admitting your mistake when you watch the interior of the unit completely fall apart three weeks in a row and do nothing to adjust. Frickin Raiders can never get out of their own way.

I did not know this but, of course that's the case.

I see this thread has reached peak form a little earlier than expected this year! Good stuff!
Oh, I have only just started to ramp up my level of freakoutitude.

At the very least, they were supposed to be competitive. This offensive line looks as bad as the Bears did last year. They are on pace to give up 68 sacks for goodness sake. Last year they gave up 50. Since becoming the starter Geno averages 44 sacks/season (7.7%) he's over 10% this season.

Is Ashton Jeanty going to fix that?

FIRE EVERYONE!!!

Has a little to do with Pete Carroll. The OL coach is Brennan Carroll.

Canary in the coal mine was switching JPJ and Meredith positions. Both looked great to end last year at C and G respective. Now both look like utter turds. Pretty sure I mentioned this to ya'll when it was first revealed in camp. I harbored significant surprise, doubt and concern about the switch then, but decided to trust the process and the professionals. The outcome has been way worse than I had even remotely imagined. This looks like one of, if not the worst OL in the league. Geno has zero time. Jeanty has zero room. This team and Pete Carroll's era is dead before it even started if this doesn't get addressed and corrected immediately.

I recall the Seahawks OLs being underwhelming to bad year after year. Was Brennan Carroll behind that mess as well?!?????

From Raiders.com:

Carroll entered the NFL coaching ranks with the Seattle Seahawks, working alongside his father and current Raiders head coach, Pete Carroll, as the run game coordinator/offensive line from 2015-20.

The other takeaway from the Brennan Carroll write up on raiders.com, is that between 2021 and now, he only coached in the College Ranks. Making some large sweeping assumptions and generalisations based on that; it's only Pete that sees Brennan as an NFL level OL coach.

January 2025 seemed like such a simpler time.
If the Raiders are going to bring in a former Super Bowl winning HC give me McCarthy. He gives me more confidence to develop a QB and scheme a highly competitive offense in 2025.
Stand by this.
Looks like we're going to have a bumper crop of hopium this off-season.
Yup
Sigh. All the mental gymnastics that we contort through to convince ourselves that Pete Carroll brings the hope of rejuvenating the franchise is a lie.

I'm a perfect world, if all the stars align and the river don't rise maybe we will see some type of West Coast Tomlinesque outcome where we hang out hat on not having a losing record while never actually contending for anything.

Guess the perfect world will start next season
FTR I am not disparaging the hiring of Pete Carroll. I am actually a huge fan of his. His enthusiasm is infectious and I think the Raiders will immediately be a lot more competitive.

If Spytek can truly build the roster then Carroll will get them to be competitive.
WRONG!!!
Man...#### this! I've been chasing the hopium dragon for 22 years, I'm not going to pretend to myself that this is the staff that's going to make it happen. Instead I'm going to embrace the small venue and Indian casino performances that make up the tail end of every great career.
I didn't listen. WHY DIDN'T I LISTEN?!?!?!?!

Great. So you're telling me Brennan Carroll ruined Christine Michael's Hall of Fame career?

This guy has GOT TO GO!!!

According to Pete today, there is no imminent consideration to move JPJ back to C. He is going to compete with Alex Cappa for who can be the less ****ty guard. No buenos.

And to my eye, Meredith was better at G than both of them. I was calling for Meredith 2 years ago

Interior OL should be Meredith-JPJ-Parham. Going away from that was questionable. Staying away in the face of the evidence of the first three games is starting to look like malpractice... Raiders have either the worst or 2nd worst OL in the league by FAR, with only the Bungles looking more inept perhaps. The OL performance has been putrid.

I'm kind of glad the field goal was blocked. The Raiders consistently give up drives and points to lose games no matter if the D has played relatively well the rest of the game. If Carlson made that kick there is no dount in my mind the Bears would have gotten into field goal range and won anyway. I said to my friend when Raiders were driving "only way Raiders win this game is if they get the winning points on the last play of the game." We saved ourselves some heartbreak by that field goal getting blocked.

I watched the game inside a tent at my kids school during their carnival festival thing surrounded by Bears fans. That sucked.

Today the loss was on Geno. The line played well enough. If you go back and watch two of Geno's INT's, you would think you were watching a rerun. It looked like the exact same route and the safety was exactly in the same spot and made the exact break on the ball. I really can not recall seeing that before.
