NBC Sports Boston’s Tom Curran said, “The indications I’ve gotten is that Jerod Mayo will be the successor to Bill [Belichick],” when asked about the team’s coaching vacancy.
It’s probably no coincidence that the last time we wrote about Mayo was in March 2023 when owner Robert Kraft said of Mayo, “He’ll be a head coach...I hope he’s with us.” Kraft also added that there is “no ceiling on his ability to be a head coach,” which is high praise for a guy who is now in a position to become the Patriots’ head coach. Mayo has been with the Pats as a coach since 2019, serving as the team’s linebackers coach. He’s all but certain to get an interview with the team in the coming days and should be considered an early favorite for the role.
NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports Patriots LB coach Jerod Mayo is “a strong candidate to replace Bill Belichick,” and there is “no need to go through the lengthy hiring process” based on his current contract.
According to Rapoport and sources familiar with the situation, the Patriots “established a firm, contractual succession plan in a prior contract and communicated it to the NFL.” While we don’t know when this all took place, the Patriots’ actions are that of a team that is prepared to hire Mayo at any moment. NBC Sports Boston’s Tom Curran said earlier on Thursday that the “indications” he received suggested Mayo was also the favorite to land the now vacated head coaching position. Rapoport also noted that other teams have created succession plans for staff members in the past, the most recent being the Ravens with now GM Eric DeCosta. Mayo should be viewed as the favorite to be the next head coach until we have reason to believe otherwise

One more for Antonio Pierce: The #Falcons have requested permission to interview him for their head-coaching job, sources say. Pierce interviewed for the #Titans’ gig yesterday. The #Raiders have not conducted any known HC interviews to this point.
I think I've said a few times I did not see a Belihick to Dallas marriage or that I'd be very surprised. Not anymore. What about the Dallas Cowboys? Yes, Mike McCarthy has done an excellent job with that offense, and this feels like the best Cowboy team in a long time. But if they lose at home to his old team, the Packers, this weekend, what happens then? D

Barring a comeback McCarthy is done. I know they've always liked Quinn but when you under perform like this I think Jerry might just want to scrap the whole regime. Would no longer surprise me. In fact I'd be surprised if Bill and Jerry don't at least talk and see if they think they can make it work.

No surprise there. Once they decided to keep Dennis Allen, this seemed inevitable. Gotta scapegoat somebody.

Coaching Carousel '24 or The next batch of folks that will be walked out the door in 2-3 years
We have a lot of openings in the NFL and coaches are retiring, leaving, parting ways with long time tenures in the NFL including Belichick and Carroll both over the ages of 70. Belichick is already being spoken about as potentially having suitors. I don't remember anyone wanting to interview Don...forums.footballguys.com

That means the Falcons will have met with BB, Harbaugh and Vrabel...I can't remember another HC job where 3 such high profile, established HCs were under consideration and took interviews that were known to the public.
If BB were to take the Falcon's job, you've gotta think he's made assurances that he'll have a competent QB in the mix. I don't see him wanting to get into basically the same situation down the stretch he had with the Pats.Schefter tweeted the Falcons and Seahawks are interested in meeting with Vrabel also

I don't think he's high profile, and if so, it's only because he was terrible this year.Schefter tweeted the Falcons and Seahawks are interested in meeting with Vrabel also
