This is such an awkward dance photo.NFL hot seat 2022: Eight head coaches who could be in jeopardy over next two months
Broncos owner and CEO Greg Penner said GM George Paton will remain with the team heading into 2023.
After parting ways with head coach Nathaniel Hackett on Monday, Penner released a statement saying, "I will lead our head coaching search with support from our ownership group and George [Paton], who I have confidence in as our general manager." Paton's brief tenure as the Broncos' general manager has gotten off to a rocky start, with the team going 11-21 in his first two seasons with the team. The Broncos hired and fired Hackett in the same calendar year, dismissing him with two weeks to go in the season, and are hoping for a rebound in 2023 from quarterback Russell Wilson, who famously signed a $245 million contract after the team traded multiple first round picks to acquire him from the Seahawks earlier this offseason.

Bill isn't going anywhere, he's done a great job with that talent this year. Team would be in playoffs without one bonehead move by a player.I mean how can you keep mike vrabel what has he won or done in nashville???? he just sucks as a hc theyve lost how many games in a row now? loaing to texans for me is the straw that broke rhe camels back.

bellichick either fired or steps down
Colts owner Jim Irsay said in an interview with ESPN that Chris Ballard will return as general manager in 2023, while interim head coach Jeff Saturday's return is being strongly considered.
This news shouldn't come as much of a shock, as Irsay was already on record in November saying he expects Ballard to be retained as general manager. His affinity for Saturday isn't lost on anybody, but a full slate of coaching candidates is expected to be interviewed before the team decides on a new head coach for 2023. In his brief tenure with the team, Saturday has led the Colts to a 1-4 record and played a role in the Vikings setting an NFL record for the largest comeback in league history when they overcame a 36-0 halftime deficit to down the Colts 39-36 in Week 15. Saturday's qualifications to coach at the NFL level came under fire when Irsay opted to hire him after letting go of Frank Reich after Week 9. More qualified coaching candidates are almost certain to pass through Irsay's office this upcoming offseason, but whether or not they can move him off his love for Saturday is anybody's guess.

NFL Network reports Texans coach Lovie Smith's job status is "very much up in the air."
The Texans enter Week 18 "in the lead" for the No. 1 overall pick, but that was always going to be the case with this sub-expansion level roster. There is zero talent here. That, of course, doesn't mean Smith is the right man for the job — he was a panic hire after the Texans ousted David Culley following his surprisingly effective 2021 — but it further demonstrates this organization has zero direction, and has become one of the league's worst. Per Ian Rapoport, "sources say frustration has mounted in the locker room and elsewhere in the building over many aspects of Smith's program." You will always find takers for one of the world's 32 head-coaching NFL jobs, but candidates will undoubtedly have pause if Smith is let go.

Dolphins reporter Armando Salguero believes coach Mike McDaniel could be fired if Miami doesn't win its Week 18 game vs the Jets.
With Miami on a five-game losing streak and at risking of missing the playoffs, McDaniel's job has come under question. While it's hard to see McDaniel's getting fired, it wouldn't be surprising to see GM Chris Grier or DC Josh Boyer scapegoated for Miami's late season collapse. The Dolphins have been the center of controversy this season between their handling of QB Tua Tagovailoa's injuries and a still pending lawsuit from ex-coach Brian Flores. Winning in Week 18 and sneaking into the playoffs would ensure McDaniel is back in 2023. We highly doubt McDaniel is actually on the hot seat, but owner Stephen Ross is one of the league's worst.

Stroud and Harbaugh.Saturday is keeping the seat warm until, well,Monday January 9th when he'll step down, take another position in the organization and sit in the draft room next year to see who The Colts franchise quarterback will be.
It’s Pete Carroll part 2. He’ll be in the NFL next year. Even if it’s the Texans. So harbaugh says no way I leave Michigan
Then ncaa says hey we’re looking at some violations there
Smash cut to, ok maybe I will look at that broncos job after all
CBS Sports' Josina Anderson reports that there's "still uncertainty surrounding the current front office situation" with the Texans.
To put this in a more blunt way, Nick Caserio said multiple times in his Monday presser that a new coach might not desire his services and that he would have to live with that. The Texans are currently casting a wide net on young coaches in their search for their fourth head coach in four years. It's not completely off the table that the Texans hire a new head coach who wants to move on from Caserio, and Texans owner Cal McNair told reporters yesterday that he would take a more active role in this coaching search. Caserio's Texans have won seven games in his first two seasons as general manager.

Packers head coach Matt LaFleur said he would consider relinquishing offensive play-calling duties in 2023.
It's not the first time LaFleur has considered giving up play calling after the season. ESPN's Rob Demovsky said LaFleur, whose Packers missed the playoffs, wants "to be more involved in other areas of the team -- such as the inconsistent defense and the lack of discipline that showed up at times during this year's 8-9 season." "If we feel like that is the best way for us to win games, then I would 100% hand that over," LaFleur said the day after Green Bay lost to the Lions on Sunday Night Football, ending their playoff push. The Packers could bring back former Broncos head coach Nathaniel Hackett in some capacity this offseason. Hackett served as offensive coordinator before landing the Denver job.

Commanders fired OC Scott Turner.
Turner's offense finished 28th in offensive DVOA in 2022. He again was weighted down with a bad quarterback in Carson Wentz, one that forced the Commanders to turn to Taylor Heinicke yet again. Turner's offensive philosophy is not a bad one and he finally had enough wideouts to stress the defense this past season. He could resurface elsewhere in the NFL as an OC soon enough, but someone had to fall on the sword for this offense after three years without an empirical breakthrough.

The Athletic's Zack Rosenblatt reports the Jets are "deliberating" whether to bring back offensive coordinator Mike LaFleur.
Reports of LaFleur's firing surfaced Wednesday morning but were quickly knocked down by Jets beat writers. That doesn't mean LaFleur is locked in to return as the team's coordinator in 2023. Without a viable quarterback, the otherwise-talented New York offense was hideously ineffective for most of the 2022 season, posting the league's third lowest EPA per play (only the Colts and Texans were worse). LaFleur's creative play designs would probably work better with a major QB upgrade in 2023.

The Athletic's Mark Kaboly reports Steelers offensive coordinator Matt Canada was at the team facility Friday.
"You can read into that a number of different ways but right now, info is limited," Kaboly said. The Steelers have been silent on Canada's future with the team since they were booted from postseason contention in Week 18. On the hot seat since he got the job in 2020, Canada has been criticized for a lack of creativity and questionable play calling. Pittsburgh's offense in 2022 ranked 14th in expected points added per play, and while their run game was among the most efficient in the league, their passing attack proved lackluster. If the team were to part ways with Canada, it likely would have happened by now.

Chargers fired offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi.
The team also fired pass game coordinator Shane Day. The Chargers were left with little choice but to blow up their offensive scheme after Lombardi refused to budge from a passing scheme that turned the cannon-armed Justin Herbert into modern day Alex Smith. Though the Chargers were top-ten in both passing yards per game and points per game, Lombardi's check-down passing scheme squelched Herbert's potential and made LA one of the more predictable passing offenses in the NFL. Herbert threw downfield (20 or more yards) on a meager 9.7 percent of his attempts in 2022, the 29th highest rate in the league. Since the start of the 2021 season, Herbert ranks 31st in air yards per attempt. The Chargers' next OC is going to have to get more out of Herbert's arm strength if Brandon Staley's team is going to take the next step. Meanwhile, Vince Lombardi's grandkid won't have a problem landing another job in the NFL.

The Athletic's Mark Kaboly reports that a decision on Matt Canada's job status is "on hold" while Mike Tomlin tends to a personal matter.
The Steelers were widely expected to part ways with their offensive coordinator before winning their final four games of the season and just barely missing out on the playoffs. Kaboly says that Tomlin has not even finished conducting exit meetings with all of his players yet. It would be a big fantasy boost for George Pickens and company if the Steelers parted ways with Canada, but at this point it seems like that is more a theory than an actuality.

The Steelers will retain Matt Canada as their offensive coordinator for the 2023 season.
Per ESPN's Brooke Pryor, this was confirmed by Steelers' spokesperson Burt Lauten, so the news is official. The Steelers' offense has struggled over the past two seasons, ranking outside the top 20 teams by points scored in consecutive years. However, Ben Roethlisberger was the team's starter in 2021 while Mitchell Trubisky and Kenny Pickett split the starting reps this year. Canada will get one more chance to right the ship in 2023, though it's fair to say he will be on a short leash.

Buccaneers fired OC Byron Leftwich.
Following the team's Wild Card loss to the Cowboys on Monday, speculation grew quickly as to whether or not the Buccaneers would retain Leftwich for another season. Once viewed as a hot head coaching candidate, Leftwich opted to remain with the Bucs after a highly successful 2021 campaign in which the team went 13-4 while ranking second in the league in points per game (30.1). This season, however, the Bucs' offense took a massive step back, ranking dead last in the league in rushing (76.9 yards per game) and 25th in points per game (18.4). It's safe to say 2022 offered a lot to be desired for Leftwich and the Bucs as a whole. He'll likely catch on with another team before the start of the season, even if he has to wait for another offensive coordinator position to open up.

Ravens fired OC Greg Roman.
Roman's first year with Lamar Jackson was transcendent, as the team finished first in offensive DVOA in 2019 and they kept defenses off-balance with run concepts that the league had not really adjusted to. Since then, it's been tougher times in Baltimore. They've finished 11th, 17th, and 12th in offensive DVOA and haven't had the same volume of rushing success despite some empirically good years. Roman should at the very least be snapped up as a coordinator by a college team, though there still could be some appeal for him in other NFL markets and there are plenty of other vacancies around the league at OC.
