Star Blazers

.
Torrent Yamato 2199 some day. It is an updated version of what we watched as kids. I just finished the run with my daughter and we both loved it.
Our Star Blazers!!!!!Lived to watch that at 6:30am every morning when I was a young lad. I actually am looking at buying seasons one and two on DVD...but want to wait to see if they do a BD remaster first.
I have both seasons on DVD. The quality is weak as you could expect, but getting to watch them with my kid was awesome. It was great contrasting the Yamato 2199 with the old Star Blazers. My daughter liked that there was more than one girl on the crew in the new version :)
Would watch that every morning as long as I could and then have to sprint to avoid missing the bus to school.

Tried watching it again on Netflix I think it was and... oof. Yeah, quality not quite what the child me had remembered. Will have to look for the new one.
Yeah it is pretty dated :) . I still enjoyed it just from a memory stand point. The new one is super high quality. Note that it follows more of the Japanese story line of the Yamato, than the English one for the Argo (which was dumbed down so that 1970's American moms would not complain about sex and violence in little Johnnys cartoon).

There is also a very well made live action movie that came out in 2010.

Interesting as GoT seems to be one of the few current shows that keeps coming up. Pretty impressive for just 40 episodes.

1 Game of Thrones

2 Married with Children

3 Burn Notice

4 X-Files

5 Pick an HM

HM: Knight Rider (greatest show ever, when I was 12), Dark Angel (best show cancelled way to soon), Dexter (season 1-5 only)

I find this thread fascinating on a personal level. I grew up without cable and only a B+W television with an antenna to watch local channels. For several years I did not have a tv at all. Then finally got basic cable as an adult but never had Netflix. So there are at least 100 shows listed here that I have never seen at all. And we are talking some MAJOR shows.

I never really was that driven to watch television and always had a million other things to do. Even missing that huge chunk of shows mentioned here, there are still plenty that I have seen the majority of, if not all of.

And with such a huge list to catch up on (and still very little free time), I'm not sure I feel compelled to want to catch up on all of them. Of shows from say the past 10 years, what would you guys list as the "must sees"? The only shows I really watched in that time were Lost, Dexter, Six Feet Under, 24, L&O SVU, CSI, and Rescue Me.

Breaking Bad

The Wire

Fairly Standard:

Seinfeld

The Wire

Breaking Bad

The Sopranos

Six Feet Under

Hard to crack that nut.

The West Wing, GoT, The Shield, CURB and Mad Men on the next five. Some other serious contenders but not really a threat to break into the top 10.

Band of Brothers? Put that in another category. Best thing ever on film/digital should suffice.

Can't have a thread ender when you include the thoroughly mediocre The Walking Dead.
Sorry, but the Walking Dead is and has been one of the most popular shows ever. I love TWD. Also, to the poster who said Band of Brothers, I don't think mini series should count. They have a definite end date and band of brothers only had 10 episodes.
"Popular" doesn't necessarily equal "good".

Hope that helps.
unpopular sure as hell doesn't equal "good". Hope that helps.
People like you are why we have Transformers 37 and Justin Bieber.

I know. It was the same old stories of falling on and off the wagon, breaking up and reconciling with his wife and s few dramatic stretches thrown inWho could stand a love triangle that lasts 5 seasons?

The West Wing (first few seasons)

This is hard......and I am not a huge network TV guy.

In no particular order

24

Cheers

Law and Order

The Amazing Race

Melrose Place - I know the acting wasn't great, but it was such a guilty pleasure in the 90s. Plus, tons of women watched it, so it was a great conversation icebreaker when I was single.

Next 5 would be, in no particular order

Everybody Loves Raymond

The Jeffersons

Big Brother

Brady Bunch

The Dukes of Hazzard

Did I say this was hard?

Start this thread back when Lost was about 40 episodes in, and Lost would be getting more mentions than GoT is in this one.

No reason to be such a Richard. You would think I was the only one who thinks the Walking Dead is a fantastic show. I've seen a lot worse than the Walking Dead listed in this thread. Perhaps I should have replaced it with MASH or All in the Family, or Law and Order, but I listed one show that strays from the norm and you think I'm some teenie bopper. Since I'm an old man I can say that I love a lot of shows from the 70s, but it's hard when you can only list 5. Hell, I also love the Sopranos but I didn't have room for them either. Besides the Walking Dead, I'm pretty sure I could put up the other 4 against any show listed in this thread. After all, it's a personal preference as stated by the title of this thread. Your 5 is no better or worse than mine.

Good call. This was a big favorite of mine through the first Jimmy Smits season. Totally forgot about this show.
Once you learn what the behind the scenes was like on that show it's amazing the high caliber work they did. The drama on the screen had nothing on the drama on the set for a long time.
I'm guessing mostly Caruso-related?

My favorite scene is after Sipowicz meets Silvia's family and falls off the wagon, and calls them a bunch of Greek idiots. :lmao:

No actually it was David Milch. He has many demons. Heroin addict, compulsive gambler, etc. He would literally be writing that days script minutes before it was to be performed. By year 7 it was complete chaos and that's a big part of the reason he left.

Breaking Bad

The Shield

The Wire

Game of Thrones

True Detective

The Simpsons

Seinfeld

Cheers

Arrested Development

American Dad

I loved the show when it was on, at least until the last few seasons. I don't think I made it through the whole run.

Is there a good book on the behind the scenes stuff?

Milch and the cast have done a lot of interviews where it got talked about but I don't know if anyone wrote a book.

If you like sci fi at all, and enjoyed the type of humor in the Avengers movie, then Firefly is a must see.

Edit to add: Also, after watching the whole series, go back and watch the pilot episode again with the Joss Whedon and Nathan Fillion commentary turned on.

my next 5 would be

Freaks and Geeks

The Shield

Larry Sanders

The Twilight Zone

The Office (Gervais version)

too early to tell, but could crack the top 5: Rick and Morty

To keep it at 5 I have to just seperate dramas and comedies. Even that makes it hard, but in no order:

The Wire

The Shield

Babylon 5

NYPD Blue

Buffy

(Can't believe I left off Sopranos, Mad Men, Battlestar and so many others)

GoT

Breaking Bad

West Wing

MASH

The Wire

Honorable Mention: Seinfeld, Deadwood, Curb, Colbert, The Shield, Mad Men, Survivor, Dexter, LOST, Original Star Trek, Law and Order, Sopranos,

Sepinwall's book (The Revolution Was Televised) goes into a lot of Milch detail, though mostly as it relates to Deadwood. There's a lot of NYPD Blue stuff too though. He was a huge fan.

It's a great book in general.

Tough...

I could choose ones for periods of my life.

I mean dukes of hazard was an all timer for me as a kid but not as a best show ever. I need to think.

cheers

Seinfeld

NYPD make my list so far...i think
The Dukes, The A Team, and Knight Rider was all I needed as a kid. Think I dabbled in Airwolf, Night Court, Quantum Leap, and Wonder Years.

There are a ton of shows ive never seen as well inclusing Breaking Bad, Mad Men, Lost, and most of HBO going way back other than Game of Thrones and True Detective. Gonna have to catch up with Netflix and HBO Go now that I have it. What to watch first...

The Dukes of Hazzard was everyone's favorite when I was in Kindergarten/1st grade.

Same with Cheers and Dallas and Knots Landing thrown in their along with V when I was a little older.

Breaking Bad

The Wire

Six Feet Under

Chuck

How I Met Your Mother :bag:
Chuck is actually a solid network show. Always wondered why it stuck around when I saw the promos every year. Looked so generic. I'm on season three now. The supporting cast is good and they do an excellent job of "showcasing" Strahovski every episode. Would have been a huge show if it debuted 10 years earlier.

One of the few shows that I don't skip the opening credits for on Netflix.

Not a top show for me but underrated overall.
