6 yr. old alone in runaway experimental balloon (1 Viewer)

Crazy story.

Gonna be funny as heck if he's hiding somewhere in his backyard, afraid he's going to get punished.

But saddest thing I've heard in awhile if he's not ok.

:(

If this is a hoax I have a feeling some of the first responders are going to treat the dad worse than his balloon....

Schlzm

This begs the question: Do we really need to 'experiment' with balloons these days? Is there some sort of market for a 'better' hot air balloon?

Someone check Pirate Island.

Falcon and Tom Sawyer maybe waiting to crash their own funeral.

Seriously, I hope the kid just pulled off a supreme hoax.

Reminds me of my neighbor freaking out about his daughter (who is best friends with my youngest) being missing, called the cops, etc. They found her asleep in a closet downstairs napping.

Let's hope it is like that.

I think the older kid released it figured he was in trouble and blamed it on his little brother who probbaly is somewhere minding his own business

If he fell out, they'll never find him. The only chance I can think of is to get a helicopter with FLIR to search...but the area is SO big.
I didn't even want to mention this, but yea, I can't see how they'd find him, it's gonna be an accident if they do, and whoever finds him...well I feel bad for everyone involved.

has someone checked his bedroom
When I was maybe 6 years old, I spun the lazy Susan around too fast, and a bottle of ketchup fell down inside. My mom had always warned me not to spin the lazy Susan so fast like that. I knew she'd be angry, so I went upstairs and hid under the bed. I ended up falling asleep for, like, 3 hours. When I woke up, the entire neighborhood and the police and everyone was searching the neighborhood for me. They thought I'd been kidnapped.

You know, had I known that "Experimental Balloon Expert" was an occupational choice in life, I would have totally done things over in life.

I have a Curious George helium foil birthday balloon in our house from August 8th and it still hasn't come down yet... this could go on for a while.
WTF is wrong with you people?
Huh?
Sounds like its a 6 year old trapped freezing and alone in a ballon in a very dangerous situation far above his parents. How desensitized have we become to be making jokes about this?
WTF joke are you talking about? He mentioned he had a similarly constructed baloon at home, and it stayed afloat awhile. There was no joke...what exactly did you find funny?
Just stop it. There are plently of posts in here from people trying to make light of the situation.

Sheriff's dept on phone with CNN. They have been searching on the ground (i.e. in the house, neighborhood) since this was reported; haven't found him yet.

ETA: They don't think he was ever in the balloon to begin with.

I'm doubting:

1. there is a "door" for anyone to climb into

2. there is enough helium to lift a six year old child

Interesting to see the media botch this a dozen different ways.

These newscasters are so stupid.

My  is that this is a hoax. I don't knwo why you'd call the media yourself...wouldn't be the first thing that crossed my mind when my kid flew away.

Holy Crap! If he gets above ~12,000 feet w/o oxygen, he'll be done for quickly.
What? I was at 14,000ft in August (Mosquito Pass, Colorado) without oxygen and had no problems.
FAA requires any plane flying above 12,000 feet to have supplemental oxygen or a pressurized cabin due to hypoxia. Not saying you're dead, but I'm sure you didn't get to 14,000 feet as fast as this kid could've...I'm sure that's part of the issue.

ETA why else would the Dad have called the media?

Sheriff's dept says basket of balloon has not been breached, so they don't think he fell out.
That's great news. If he fell out, there would definitely have to be something opened on that balloon.
Unless he was holding on to the outside as it lifted off.

None of this makes sense.

They said this balloon would shoot up in the air once it was released, so how could a 6-year old release it while he was in it? It looks like it had several ropes hanging down that I presume tied to multiple points to keep the balloon down.

That said, I heard that it's been 2-hours since the balloon was launched, it seems like he would have turned up by now if he was just hiding or something. Still, I hope that's what happened.

Another odd thing is that the on-ground "rescuers" clearly knew he wasn't in there before it landed because of the way they reacted.

 there were really no ill effects at that altitude. Sure, if you jogged or climbed a rock face you got winded easier, but I think the altitude required to cause any sort of issues is a good bit higher than that... likely in the 16,000-18,000 range. JMHO from some limited experience in amateur mountaineering.

A 6-year-old couldn't hold on for more than 10 seconds. If this had happened, they would have found him by now.

What's the motivation? Attention? Seems a weird way to go about it. I think the most logical explanation is that the kid thinks he did something really bad by letting his parents' expensive toy get away, so he ran away and hid.If that's the case- and I hope it is- it's gonna make for an interesting commentary on the media, 24 hour television news and sensationalism.

To prove his contraption worked...ETA: I hope for the best, obviously

This dude sounds like a media whore. LOOK AT ME LOOK AT ME! If it is a hoax, I hope he spends 10 years in jail.

Knowing six year olds like I do, I am holding out hope that the kid is literally behind a tree at the famliy home terrified to come out because he thinks he's in trouble.

i hope somuch better than some other outcomes
Of course we all hope nothing happened to that boy. However, if this is a hoax this is still very serious and the tools behind it need to be dealt with. If the parents are involved and actually used their kid as a diversion in this that is just whacked! Where is this kid at right now and where are these parents?
