6 yr. old alone in runaway experimental balloon (1 Viewer)

Where the eff is the father? He designed the thing...I would think he would know what it could and could not lift.

One cubic foot of helium will lift about 28.2 grams

1 pound = 453.59237 grams

Average 9 y/o boy 61.6 lbs.

Average 9 y/o boy in grams = ~27,947 grams

Which woudl require ~991 cubic feet of helium.

Balloon was proported to be 20' in diameter which is a surface of ~1256 square feet in area...so it wouldn't have to be THAT tall, which it didn't appear to be.

Obviously not factoring in the weight of the balloon, but I think now that it IS feasable that this could lift a kid...although not quickly.

well at least we know everything is ok because this thread is becoming the same garbage as everything else in the FFA
:lmao:
Yah, well, its threads like this that make me call FBG a cesspool. I was raised as a christian and I was brought up to help the less fortunate. But you get PatsWillWin losing his life to a fake organ-harvesting cop. Or you get Flying V discovering a fictitious crimescene. Or you get an Otis asking when its ok to become a thug and attack someone for bipolar disorder.I really do not want to ever be considered an FBG. This place sucks and should be shut down. But mostly this sort of crap starts at the very top. I blame Chase Stuart.

kind of like a "kid fell down a well" story in the other direction.
Homer: That Timmy is a real hero!Lisa: How do you mean, Dad?Homer: Well, he fell down a well, and... he can't get out.Lisa: How does that make him a hero?Homer: Well, that's more than you did!Wiggum: Your boy picked a bad time to fall down a well. If he'd done it at the start of the fiscal year, no problemo.

you don't have to visit the cesspoolthere's a bar down the street i think sucks, once i decided that i never went back!

I really want to see Wolf Blitzer and his buddy there try to convert grams to pounds on that fancy telestrator they have.

This thing made 8 pages in 2 hours. The story on pg 1 sounds horrendous :2cents: ... what's the Cliffs version of pp 2-8?

Any develpments, any good non-video links?

From CNN.com story

The helium balloon had been tethered to the boy's family home, the Larimer County Sheriff's Department said. The boy got into the craft Thursday morning and undid the rope anchoring it.
Solid reporting by CNN. The ropes were attached to the perimeter of the top part of the balloon. No way you can climb inside the structure and untether the ropes. What happened to common sense?

Shorter thread on another board is speculating that the kid was never on/in the balloon ... that it was too small & flimsy to lift a child. 411?

Sold to the highest bidder and placed in a climate controlled secure location for future reference. Also, SHHH.

Schlzm

This hot-air balloon expert is great. They might have wanted to think about having him on before, for instance, reporting there was a kid in the balloon.

per CNN 5 ft high5 x 1256 = 6280

i wish the army was as smart as the FFA

they must feel pretty dumb for sending out blackhawks to rescue a kid from a balloon that even a message borad could see could not have a person in it

ditto the FAA

man

only thing dumber than the media is the government

Apparently it was nothing more than a JiffyPop promotion. :tumbleweed:
C'mon, DB ... my brother in initials. Shoot me straight.
We'll have to wait until the news media is done with this before we get the straight facts. And I'm not kidding in the least!!!

Yeah, this guy is the voice of reason.. way too late.It was funny how Wolf started him off by mentioning it was a hot air balloon."First off, it's a gas balloon. Hot air plays no role it its lift."

So if I'm following the jumbled facts correctly, wasn't it one of the siblings who reportedly said that the missing kid climbed into the balloon and floated away?

If that's the case, you'd have to think that the sibling knows where the missing one is and it's either a planned hoax or something else happened to the kid and the other ones were trying to cover it up somehow.

Which would mean it could lift ~390 lbs.I'd estimate it would have no problem lifting the boy + it's own weight. That said I don't think the boy was ever inside...but still.

Getting a lot of conflicting equations about this. One guy on the other board said that 4,000 cubic ft are needed to raise 50 lbs. Fifty pounds, that is ... no typo.
