Oh yeah. :hey:

I'm hoping that everyone provides a list of their cheat sheet when this is done. Or even just posts one or more additional lists based on our structure here.
In that vein, I really want to use:

Out of Time Man

For my Wannabe 80s. I think it fits in nicely with Golden Brown, Blister In the Sun, and Touch of Grey. But, it is a cover (it would be my 3rd) of a 1991 song (too close IMO to the decade in which we are drafting from).

Instead

16.3 Daylight - Matt & Kim - Wannabe 80s
love the song... not sure I'm getting an 80s vibe from it, but wtf do I know.
I prefer the Troublemaker remix featuring De La Soul but it sounds even less eightyish

Love this song and most of the album. Looking back, Fleetwood Mac was one of my biggest missteps as a young music snob. At the time, I wrote them off as typical El Lay/You Kay corporate rock whores. I was totally wrong. Their 75-90s stuff has held up better than a lot of the trendy stuff I was listening to back then.
I was talking to Binky about them in the last draft. Christine McVie has returned to the band, and they already have a tour set. So far the closest they are going to be to me is DC or Atlanta. I saw them back in the 80s, and they were great. They are playing in your parts in November and December.
Looks like I need to free up Dec. 12th.
Great show in Little Rock this past winter without Christine McVie - would have been even better with her. Even if you kind of like them, I think you will be suprised in a very good way.

Here is my list so far...

1.04 - Tempted – Squeeze – New Wave/Synthpop

2.16 - Walk This Way – Run DMC/Aerosmith – Rap/Hip Hop

3.04 - Don’t You (Forget About Me) – Simple Minds [The Breakfast Club (1985)] – Movie/TV "Themes"

4.16 - Voices Carry – ‘Til Tuesday [Voices Carry] Title Track of Album

5.04 - Don’t Dream It’s Over – Crowded HouseNon-US/UK Band

6.16 - Still of the Night – WhitesnakeMetal/Hair Metal

7.04 - Steppin’ Out – Joe Jackson – Soft Rock

8.16 - Don’t Worry Be Happy – Bobby McFerrin R & B/New Jack Swing

9.04 - 1999 - Prince Disco/Dance/House

10.16 - If You Don't Know Me By Now – Simply Red – Cover Song

11.04 - Mayor of Simpleton - XTC Indie/Alternative

12.16 - When the Heart Rules the Mind – GTR One Hit Wonders

13.04 - Goody Two Shoes – Adam AntUK #1's

14.16 - The Legend of Wooley Swamp – The Charlie Daniels Band – Country

15.04 - Puttin' on the Ritz - Taco – Silly/Funny/Wierd

16.16 - Something About You – Level 42 - Pop
Tempted is one of my all-time favorites!! :towelwave:

ETA: Steppin' Out is too

Andy beat me to it this morning. Was thinking about what I actually listened to in the 80s vs. what I listen to from their now. I wanted to have the main few bands that I liked back then represented somehow. So far I have gotten Maiden in there, and I think one other will be my wildcard, but Huey Lewis & the News has to be on my list. These were the first few albums that I had as a kid, and I played the hell out of them. Also had to get the Back to the Future soundtrack for those two songs. It was bad enough that when I got my first pets, two hamsters, that's right - I named them Huey and Lewis.

16.05: Huey Lewis & The News - If This Is It (soft rock)
Love it.
They released their first album in 80. Before that they had a decent following playing small venues in the bay area. In August that year they played a club in Chico called the 3rd and Up. 175-200 capacity and most of that was a dance floor. I was 18 without a fake id, turned away at the door. I ended up at some party late. Walking home through the apartments I heard live music at the pool. Huey and the News had been out there singing a capella and strumming a couple guitars for over an hour. I guess one of them was good friends with a student. By the time I wandered over they were done playing and just getting high. They took it to some apartment. I got turned away there too.

Btw, I can't listen to Huey Lewis and the News. An instant mute or channel change for me. I liked them for about a year.

Looking into getting tix at Madison Square Garden in October. Some major coin though, and MSG is a lousy place to see a show unless you're really close to the stage.

I'm going to try to get DC tix if I can on Monday. I don't have an AmEx <_<

I feel no guilt for loving this song (or any song for that matter), but some may hate it or not give it the time of day, plus it's country. This is Johnny's daughter.

16.18 - Seven Year Ache - Rosanne Cash (guilty pleasure)
If my country pick gets rejected, I have her as my backup. She had an excellent decade.

But I was a girlie man for wanting to see Haim (aka Fleetwood Mac 2.0).

Huey also played harmonica for Thin Lizzy in the late '70s, including during their legendary Live and Dangerous tour. Here's a (poor) clip from a few years later. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fXB9U57J-yI

FWIW, I saw Huey and the News at a free concert last summer on Long Island. They were pretty decent - played all the tunes.

1st off 1sts? Interesting. I can't wait to see it. I started my bonus list yesterday almost entirely new wave alternative from performers not yet taken. Including a punk song I have 21 on the list.

Pretty sure I've recommended this album before. Dave Edmunds. DE 7. Rockabilly goes country. I know every word. :bag:

Other Guys Girls is my favorite, but not country. Paula Meet Jeanne is a runner-up that always makes me smile, a country song to me. Louisiana Man and Deep in the Heart of Texas are irrefutably country. My choice is blue grass, a country sub-genre, right?

16.6 Country -- Warmed Over Kisses, Dave Edmunds

Also I'd love to hear what the FFA music draft nerds would compile in a rockabilly category.

how about I focus more on title tracks then? I think my initial list was in the 60s this morning with both categories. I think more were title tracks anyway.

I think Floppo was bay area at the time too. The overplay is what ruined them for me, and I've always gravitated away from pop. I should probably get over that and educate my kid to them some time. I love doing that, btw. I have the world's most receptive teenager, as long as it means no homework. :)

the cover shot of Sport was shot at my old local (Mill Valley) bar, and I'm pretty sure Huey went to my old HS. He was a rapist. Or maybe not.

I played pool with Dave Wakeling and Ranking Roger on that same table when they were in town I think working on an album - I think at Plant in Sausalito (maybe a general public ablum?). Really nice guys. My friend saw them out of the corner of his eye and said "get a load of the english beat over there" right before we all realized it WAS them and started freaking out.

16.15 Welcome to the Boomtown - David + David (First song off first only album)

There's been a lot of nostalgia in this thread but the 80s were also a very scary time. This song captures the slick artifice and the rotten core that exemplified the era.
Nice pick. I'd completely forgotten about it or I would have used it same as you. Lou Reed vibe going. Listened to it twice. LA in the 80s. Excessive. I'd go back right now if I could. Thanks.

The 80s were a strong decade for rockabilly. Sadly a lot of the independent releases aren't available on Spotify.

That song can be used in the One-Hit Wonder category too.

I feel like these dudes always toed the line between real metal and hair metal as well as anybody. They were one of my faves back then but overall their music hasn't aged as well as some, probably due to choirboy vocals and silly lyrics. Technically they are tops, and George Lynch was the complete package.. hooks and skill. Should have been his name on the band. Jerky behavior and infighting doomed them to split before the 80's even ended. George got his band after that but it was too little too late.

Took me a while to even decide what song I wanted. They do have a movie theme, but I just can't get into it these days

Dokken - It's Not Love

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rCn80HADpto

metal/hair

That's probably the right Dokken to pick. I'd also accept:

In My Dreams (of course)

Burning Like A Flame (kind of sappy, but I like it)

Jangle-Pop count as Rockabilly?

I've always been partial to the relatively face rocking

Kiss of Death
The 15 year old me would have argued vociferously for

Mr. Scary
Footnote: I have seen Dokken three times live. That's more than I've seen Prince!
