______ Passed Away Today, RIP (7 Viewers)

Back whenever it was I first saw/heard him, I wondered what the hell was going on. Over a short period of time I came to like him and what he did.  He was great. RIP Gilbert

RIP Gilbert.
his daughter was in floppinho's elementary school grade and school- so we used to see him around a ton, even if we didn't know him at all. what I saw- nice enough guy who mostly kept to himself, and was very involved with his family, which I appreciated from a celebrity. he participated in pretty much every school/family event and used to help organized a stand-up benefit night for the school which I know raised a ton of money.

I always enjoyed his humor... and yeah, the Aristocrats bit was an all-timer.

still so young at 67... RIP and nothing but condolences and love for his wife and kids.

Man, what a loss.  Loved his bit that got him fired from Aflac. After the Tsunami, "Japan is so advanced instead of going to the beach they bring the beach to them". Or something like that. RIP

NHL Hall of Famer Mike Bossy, 65

One of the greatest snipers in hockey history. Even as a lifelong diehard Rangers fan, I couldn't help but have respect for the classy Bossy. Tough few months for the Islanders' early '80s dynasty, with Bossy, Gillies and Jean Potvin all having passed so far in 2022.

lifelong Phlyer fan, and it was always #10 on les Habs (Guy) and #22 on the Islanders that had me chitting bricks.

i cited his career record of goals in games played/shots on net as the highest % in history back in the sports draft.

funny thing, i actually rooted for them hated Icelanders when they lost the Cup that started the Edmonton dynasty - couldn't stand those "WHA" upstarts 😁

in retrospect, they were a great bunch to root on and watch - Mike was the "Boss", and a class act through it all.

R.I.P.  🙏

plz don't get me started on Hextall and the '87 Cup series.
Ugh, as a Flyers fan.....BAD memories.  And your Bossy hate/love is spot on.  I rooted for them against Edmonton that year, as well :)
After Nystrom, I don't know how you guys could root for the Islanders, but I guess it's different than being in the same metropolitan area. Had no issues with Gretz & Co - such a fun team to watch.

But I digress - this is about the passing of Bossy. :(

maybe because we actually won Cups in the mid-70s, when i first became a fan (my mom worked for an import company co-owned by Phlyers scout Marcel Pellitier, and i got to meet and greet my heroes at a very young age).

we weren't dealing with saddle sore arses since 1940, like some others ...

Estelle Harris, I.e Mrs. Costanza/Mrs,  Potato Head

Link

Liz Sheridan, i.e. Mrs. Seinfeld/ALF co-star, aged 93

Sheridan was the last surviving “parent” from Seinfeld. Estelle Harris, who played George Costanza’s mother Estelle, died just last week, and Jerry Stiller, who played Frank Costanza, died in 2020. Barney Martin, who played Sheridan’s onscreen husband Morty Seinfeld, died in 2005.

Except now you’re the ones with the saddle sores. 1975! 1975!

Lets go Pens!!!

Have Mike Bossy's autograph on a hockey card somewhere. One of my favorite sports heroes as a boy.

Godspeed, Mr. Bossy.

RIP

Robert Morse - Bert from Mad Men

Looks like he had a fairly prolific career, so you old farts might know him from other things but Mad Men was it for me. And that’s plenty. RIP.
Loved that his goodbye number in Mad Men (linked in McB's article) echoed his musical fame of more than 60 yrs ago from one of the first satiric looks at the corporate skyscraper world in the How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying,. RIP -

Damn, sorry to see Robert Morse go, he was amazing.  I've watched a lot of great TV series over the years, Game of Thrones, Breaking Bad, Sopranos, The Wire, Deadwood and on and on (and I know I'm leaving a bunch of my other favorites out) but I would put Mad Men right up there with the best of them.  So, to me, this one scene, Who Cares, was my head snap moment in Mad Men that took that show to a whole new level.  It felt like 3D chess and made me think - wait - that's not at all what I was expecting. . . holy crap I love this show!

Glad they did that for him, and for us so that we could see him bookend his career that way.

I watched How to Succeed... just recently, and IIRC, the suit he wore in his final appearance in Mad Men was similar or the same as one he wore in How to Succeed.

I don't want to derail this thread to rhapsodize about Mad Men, but I'm still binge-watching it on Amazon and sooo want to revive that thread, especially with this year marking 15 since it began.

Anyway, even for those who didn't see the extra layer that he brought due to his role in How to Succeed, Morse was an absolute master with Bert's nuances, from just the slightest of pauses before driving home the point of his sentences to eating mashed potatoes with ketchup in one scene then calling Conrad Hilton "a bit of an eccentric" in another while displaying zero self-awareness all along was breathtaking.

Good night, peanut...

Man, my youth here. Guy Lafleur was somebody my brother always emulated when we played street hockey. Him and Dryden and Robinson and those Canadiens teams.

Something else.

RIP.

The only guy who had a better hair-in-the-wind look while flying down the ice was Ron Duguay.

Canadians peak (75-76 to 77-78) coincided with the beginning of his 6 year supernova. Guy was amazing and he had so much talent around him, just great all around dominant teams. I liked that dynasty more than the Islanders or Oilers and it’s not close.

Growing up in Buffalo in the 70's we got the CBC Hockey Night in Canada broadcast and of course the Canadiens were on it A lot! Always loved LaFleur as he came across as a true good sport and he made it hard for me to Hate the Canadiens the way I loathed the Bruins. As a Sabres fan I always enjoyed the competition between LaFleur and Gilbert Perreault so the games against Montreal were must see for me and my brother. Godspeed Guy!

PS-  Eff the Bruins!!!

Same for Detroit area folks who grew up watching Windsor 9. Blue Jays games were blacked out but no restrictions on hockey.

Those  really were special Montreal teams!
Toronto was historically the Red Wings rival. Before Stevie Y it was Darkness with Harkness & the team was the Dead Wings so it seemed OK to have an alt fav.

(Aside - better Olympic broadcasts + always preferred The National & other CBC news programming over U.S. coverage)

And curling, can't forget the curling.

wow.

exactly one week later, after i mentioned him in my Bossy post.

two legit snipers, but Guy was better all over the ice, and prolly the fastest cat i ever saw in person.

he destroyed Philly every damn time ... or so it seemed - when they wrested the Cup from the Phlyers in '76, i cursed them ####### frenchies HARDCORE ... Lafluer, Lemaire, Laroque, Larouche ... and that fat #### Serge Savard.

bastids.

but, man ... much like the Islanders, i couldn't help but respect them, and all they meant to the sport i loved above all others - the Yankees of the NHL, and they earned it, and wore it so very well.

Guy was a legend while still playing - just the epitome of "superstar"

les Habitants were Hockey, and he was the King.

le meilleur du jeu

R.I.P.
