Adam Sandler is still a thing (1 Viewer)

So I was looking at Netflix today and saw the top 10 movies in the US includes 5 Adam Sandler movies.

1. Happy Gilmore 2
4. Happy Gilmore
5. Hotel Transylvania 3
8. Grown Ups
10. Grown Ups 2

That's got to be some kind of a record for Netflix from one primary actor.

For the record, I watched Happy Gilmore 2 and enjoyed it for what it was.

My 19 yo son was also very excited about it and watched it the day it came out. My wife refused to watch it with me because she thinks all of his movies are dumb and not funny.

I am assuming that the marketing for HG2 is driving this completely. People will watch the original to get ready for the new one and then after that probably clicked on the others because they were suggested and they figured they would watch something else Sandler. I am not totally surprised by it.

ETA: I watched HG2 and enjoyed it. While it is a dumb movie it still made me laugh at times and I enjoyed the tie back to the original and all the cameos. The movie knows what it is and did what was expected.

Sandler signed a deal with Netflix to produce content solely for that streaming service. I'm guessing that is a prime reason for Netflix to promote his stuff so much.
I believe it is the same for Eddie Murphy. He has also done sequels for a couple of his big hits.

"Happy Gilmore 2" was good. You knew what it was before going in, so it was enjoyable.

Sandler seems to be doing what Burt Reynolds did in the 1970's--make silly movies and put all your friends and family in the cast.

Your wire is right.

And I'm sure you know that too. ;)

I try to live without regrets, but I can honestly say one of my biggest such regrets was not going out for beers with Adam Sandler when I had the opportunity. I am friends with one of his cousins, who I went to college with. She got him to come to UCSB to perform a comedy show (this was in like '93-94 when he was just budding in popularity on the comedy scene from SNL) and went out for beers with him and a few of her close friends after the show. She invited me, I declined. I honestly don't know why. So dumb of me.

I got no issue with Sandler but does anyone actually believe those lists?

Start hiding money

I don’t want to disparage another man’s wife but that’s a bit of a red flag.

Who doesn’t like Sandler!?!?!

Now imagine the man's black.

Speaking of Adam Sandler on Netflix, I'm a huge fan of Hubie Halloween. I absolutely love it. The first year it came out, I watched it like 3 times in the first couple of days, and I've watched it once or twice every year since then.

I don't need you to judge me, I have my wife for that. ;)

Sandler has done an incredible job keeping himself relevant and beloved. He appeals to people of all races and ages. Young people seem him as a father figure from his family movies and middle aged people remember him from the 90s glory days. He’s even won over snobby film people with movies like Uncut Gems and Punch Drunk Love. Meanwhile he’s just been raking it in turning his movies into big vacations with his friends and family.

I'm a Hubie fan as well. It's cheesy as hell, but a good Halloween movie.

Really odd - I just checked his wiki and the only thing of his other than SNL I've ever seen is the Hotel Transylvania movies that I watched with my daughter. Something about the genre where an actor creates an odd, stupid, mildly special needs, or similar socially awkward character and then builds an entire movie around that one piece of schtick - I can't stand that kind of humor. It reminds me of the Mr. Magoo show from our youth where the entire franchise was built around the fact that the main character had near blindness. I never saw any Farley movies either, nor any of the Dumb/Dumber movies. I tried watching Uncut Gems a few years ago but had to tap out early for completely different reasons - just way too intense for the mood I was in that night.

I agree with most of this. Dumb and dumber movies.

Sandler has a few bangers worth watching. I don’t like Billy Madison but Happy Gilmore, the wedding singer and 50 first dates are good wholesome fun the whole family can enjoy.

I don't find Adam Sandler all that funny but many family members seem to like him a lot.
I think he should have tried harder at serious roles and then put a little bit of his personality or spin on them

My personal favorite was Punch Drunk Love and if you've never seen that movie, I highly recommend it but it's not for everyone
Paul Thomas Anderson directed it

I liked his work in Uncut Gems although the script and movie overall had some big flaws, still appreciated his efforts to pull that film off

My personal serious role favorites are Reign Over Me and Spanglish. Thought he was great in both, but especially Reign Over Me.

Seen Spanglish, meh but will check out this other title, not sure I'm familiar with it.

It's a very different role for Sandler. It's about a guy who lost his family on 9-11 and is a little messed up and reconnects with his college roommate (Don Cheadle).

Plus it includes a great cover of Love, Reign O'er Me by Pearl Jam.

His comedies were great until Little Nicky. Big Daddy is probably my favorite of the wholesome comedies.

I was surprised how much I laughed at Happy Gilmore 2. It was funny mostly due to the roles and cameos of stars in and out of the golf world. Lots of good chuckles. Sandler is also well known a good guy in real life. I hate the childish voice he does (see SNL, Waterboy). Otherwise no problem with him movies. They are shallow but entertaining.

IDK in a era where Hollywood takes itself waaaaaaay too seriously, Sandler is an outlier. Like his humor or not, the dude produces, is humble, and is sitting on a pile of money that could reach the moon. He's got the backing and green light to make any movie he wants, does almost a movie a year, casts anyone he wants including all his friends and is the last one to want to be in the spotlight. Dude dresses like he's homeless and shoots hoops with regular old weekend warrior slubs on downtime between takes.

I dont think there is an actor in the business who can say they had a bad experience with him, and apparently he is overly gracious to his supporting cast after each movie, ie buying them cars after the movie wraps and things like that.

If you look deep into HG2, it is full of easter eggs and tributes, including 1 for Cameron Boyce who played his son in Grown Ups and died at 20 in 2019. In the scene with the employees inside the starter shed at the 1st golf corse, there was a clip of Cameron of his playing on a monitor during the interaction.

I have always been a big Sandler fan. He never disappoints (except for Little Nicky).

HG2 was a fun romp. Shooter was the scene stealer. First hour was great once it went to Hot Shots Golf I lost my interest and the movie lost it’s mojo.

But still a great laugh. Some scenes had me rolling.

A ton of great cameos and Travis Kelce was great. Played a great doosh bag.

Grew up listening to his tapes/CDs and have always been a fan. I've met him a few times over the last 20 years or so as he goes to synagogue with my wife's grandfather. He's a super nice guy and remembered meeting my wife and I which was surprising to me since he has to meet so many people.

One of the times we met him was at a restaurant where you order at the counter and get your drink out of a cooler. My wife, her grandfather, and I were at a table that was next to the cooler. While he was in line, his daughter (who was like 5 at the time) was scoping the cooler out for drinks and asked my wife to get her a drink out of the cooler and then pointed to a bottle of beer (she thought it was root beer). My wife ended up getting her a root beer right as Sandler walked up. He made a joke about starting alcoholism early in his family and then talked with us until his food was ready.

Glad he's had so much success, but I agree, the Grown Ups movies are terrible. But Disagree with a lot of the thread on Little Nickie. I didn't like it the first time but watching it years later with my wife I really liked it.
