Adrian Peterson's turn to get the boot from the NFL (1 Viewer)

honestly tho...think about this...a child learns from watching...even if he was bad its because its something he saw someone else do...lets say he hit a sibling...are you teaching him not to hit by hitting him??? so ### backwards its insane

Texas seems to be taking a lot of blame here.
From what I've read (although I've skipped a lot) it seems like it is the Texans/Southerners who are the ones saying "but that's how we do things down here".
They routinely beat 4 year olds with objects to the point of bleeding and bruising? I get some parents think spankings/whoopins are appropriate. That is a different argument. This was a professional athlete with elite strength beating a child with an object 10-15 times causing bleeding and/or bruising to the butt, thighs, hands, and scrotum, while stuffing his mouth with leaves to keep the screams muffled and possibly threatening to hit him in the face if he told his mother or authorities. He also seemingly routinely uses a belt and may have hit him in the face this incident as well. I do not under stand how these macho men or southerners or whomever is defending these actions thinks any of this extremity is OK.

(not arguing with you-- just dumbfounded by the dumbness on this board yet again)
I love you and I love this post. So much.

I'm betting thousands of Chicago Bears fans cheered tonight when Brandon Marshall caught a TD pass. But isn't Marshall as bad a guy as Peterson or Rice?

Maybe at one point (maybe - his gf stabbed him at one point, amongst other incidents). But he's either cleaned up his act after getting the help/medication he needed, or he's gotten much better at keeping it hidden from the media.

I watched that live. After that, they awkwardly threw it to Ray Lewis for his turn on the soapbox. Hearing sanctimonious drivel coming from a guy who paid off families of two men he definitely didn't kill was both humorous and pathetic.
Pretty brutal

Good for Cris Carter for being consistent and telling Ray Lewis that he should have been suspended until after his trial. (@1:42 on). It's pretty funny to hear Lewis' stammering response.

Is Goodell gonna go back and suspend Marshall for something he did 7 years ago? he just might

I wanted to transcribe Lewis's response. It was too long to do the whole thing, but this was the funniest part.

Ray Lewis

[SIZE=medium]And and and and and so, l-let let me make sure we clear. Absolutely. Let me make sure we clear on one thing. Because that what we have to be very careful, right? Reminds me of Lawrence Taylor's rant when he was all coked up in Miami.

You were perfectly ok with Martin beating the crap out Zimmerman.

Marshall does that stuff today, different story as to how he is treated by the nfl.

If you gave me this quote, unattributed, and asked me to guess who'd said it, I probably would have said Borat.

I am just trying to find consistency to your logic and there is none. Add to it your screen name and bragging about all the fights you have been in, it is just weir.

no...you trying to compare what AP did to a child and what happened in a fight between 2 men where one was shot to death is weird

I am curious where we are heading here.

It really does appear as if the public has flipped in a relatively short amount of time on how much "bad dudery" we are willing to accept in athletes.

I know Hornets fans that were beside themselves with excitement that we landed Lance Stephenson 6 weeks ago, but are now fully on board with whatever swift punishment is in store for Rice, Peterson, and even Hardy should it come to it.

I suspect this is at the heart of whatever it was that Goodell was thinking. This change has been relatively rapid. Isn't Rice the first NFL athlete to ever be punished at all for beating his wife/GF? From that standpoint, I could see Goodell thinking the original 2 games was doing something.

It's a pretty interesting development to see public opinion take a 180 on these matters so quickly. Obviously, it's a good thing to see people taking violence against women a bit more seriously.

I really just think the video/picture evidence trumps all. Remember the Riley Cooper racist comments last year? Once it's in pictures/video, it goes viral...it's no longer just a matter followed by serious NFL fans, it becomes a national story.

Not having Ray Lewis doling out advice on how to comport yourself as an NFL player is probably a good first step here.
I'm sure Lewis was reminiscing about the good ol' days, when you could kill someone in the off-season, and show up for training camp ready to go.

:goodposting:

The less heard from Ray Lewis the better
Did you hear Ray yesterday when Carter said something about him being in trouble.... Whenever he talks about what happened to him notice he never says a man was "murdered" and he was on trial for his life, he always says "my situation"

Michael Pittman was suspended 3 games for a domestic abuse conviction back in 2004. But that involved him ramming his car into hers while their kids were in the car.

Warren Moon beat and strangled his wife, went to trial and was acquitted because his wife testified that she provoked him. Then went on to have one of his best seasons in the NFL with 33 TD passes. Never missed a beat.

Of course she divorced him the day his NFL paychecks ended.

I'm pretty much in the corner of parents being able to slap their kids in the ###, or even break out a belt for a mild smack or two in extreme disciplinary circumstances.... however this is way out of line. :(

No way he can play again this year, at the least

With what is going on right now I would be surprised if he plays anytime soon. Now Hannah Storm is all over it on ESPN. This has turned into a "cause"

This may have already been covered in the thread, but the guy who broke the story also has a morning radio show and he made a few points this morning:

1) The photos of the injury were from a week after the date they were inflicted.

2) The photos that have been released do not depict the most serious of the injuries, which was the cut on the front of his thigh (the one that Peterson felt bad about).

3) An examination of the boy showed marks from prior physical discipline. One was a loop mark, which is why AP was asked by investigators whether he ever used an extension cord.

4) AP was not asked about the leaves in the mouth allegation, and thus has neither admitted nor denied it. He readily admitted to pretty much everything else (10-15 times, cut to the front of the leg, injury to genitalia, etc.).

OMG, they need to get Hannah Storm off the air now. She is absolutely awful. You could see cris carter get really annoyed with her yesterday saying football is voiolent & that could be why this stuff happens. She just had stupid glazed look on her face the whole time.

By the way, Rusty Hardin is AP's lawyer. Recall that Rusty successfully represented Roger Clemens, as well as Warren Moon. The guy is good.

The "cause" of what?? protecting children from abuse? That's a bad thing?

The NFL, like it or not, has been slammed into the front of this social issue, domestic violence of all kinds.

I suspect that as a culture we reached the tipping point with the Ray Rice video.

For the most part, for years we all tolerated and more or less looked the other way when the athlete-heroes we idolized turned out to have feet of clay.

Just this thread alone mentions numerous past situations where less than a slap on the wrist was given.

Social media has played a huge role in changing the rules rapidly.

Goodell got caught playing by the old rules and didn't even realize the rules had changed, almost overnight.

I know there is some room for debate about how far a parent can go in disciplining a child.

There is some room for debate about how active the NFL should be in setting up new standards of behavior for it's members.

I for one am glad our culture has reached the point where abuse in the home is abhorred for the degrading, inhumane, and cowardly act it is.

Not discounting the seriousness of these topics, but have NFL's ratings suffered as a result?
Not sure of that, but I do think the NFL is going to do everything to clean up its act. The problem that the league has always had is if one team took a stand and released a guy who beat his wife, or killed someone while driving drunk another team would sign that player the next day. I am not sure that is going to happen as much anymore.
