Adrian Peterson's turn to get the boot from the NFL (1 Viewer)

I'm still amazed that

1. The Vikings are actually going to let him play this Sunday

2. Thus far, the NFL has not taken any action

I don't understand what the heck they're thinking about. Public image is everything to the NFL. This is TERRIBLE public image for the NFL.

Sorry if this is a honda, I didn't read thru the thread...Flew up to the Twin Cities today for business. Listening to the radio talk shows a little bit, it seems to be about 85% supporting Adrian and about 15% against him. Every one seems to say what he did is absolutely awful, BUT, he should be allowed to play again next week:

1. He's done great things for the community, especially kids. lets give him a mulligan.

2. They spank/hit kids in the "the South" so its part of his culture.

3. I have have mixed feelings but lets just let the legal process work.

4. it wasn't child abuse, just a bad "whipping".

5. owners/coaches saw how bad the Vikings were without him so we better let him play.

Sounds like the word on the street up here is the NFL/Vikings think this won't go to trial until 2015 so let him play this season.
The trial will be set in the off-season most likely and then promptly pled down. I would expect a suspension based on the degree of charge pled down to.

Why do people say, "I was beaten as kid with a belt/switch so it's okay"?
I'd like to know how many of those people were beaten with a stick as a 4 year old until their scrotum was bleeding?
Link? I didn't realize he actually made it bleed. I hope you're not just exaggerating. Actually, I hope you are.
Well, open wounds, almost be definition bled at some level.

However, I don't think people appreciate how easy it is to cut the skin with a flexible switch. It really has nothing to do with brute strength and has to do with the whip motion that will open the skin, and if an "end" wrapped around a leg, it could easily hit the scrotum without ever trying to inflict injury there.

In a series of texts, 29-year-old Peterson described the extent of the beating he rained down on his son as an act of discipline after the boy pushed another of Peterson’s kids while the other child was playing a video game.

In the text messages, Peterson said that he “felt bad” about the beating because he realized later that he had caused more injuries than he had intended. But he added that his “bad” feelings would not stop further beatings if he deemed them necessary.

“Got him in nuts once I noticed,” Peterson wrote in a text to the boy’s mother, according to the CBS report. “But I felt so bad, n I’m all tearing that butt up when needed! I start putting them in timeout. N save the whooping for needed memories!”

In another text, Peterson assured the boy’s mother, “never do I go overboard!”

Prosecutors allege that the beating caused multiple injuries to the child, including bruises and cuts to the boy’s legs, buttocks, back, and scrotum.

So no, it does not say SPECIFICALLY that he made the scrotum of his 4 year old bleed when he beat him with a stick. I know that matters to you, Strike.

There is no way in hell that this story is going to be allowed to go to the offseason, and Peterson will play this season as if nothing ever happened. I can't see that happening.

Since Barkley said on ESPN that this is basically accepted in the black community as a way to parent, I can only speak for myself growing up black in an inner city.

It was not accepted in my neighborhood. In fact, the only friends I know that got abused- level beatings with belts/switches/extension cords were the friends that grew up with no father.

I believe it was the single moms over compensating for no father being around.

Like I said, I can't speak for the entire black community, I'll let our Tim do that.

You might want to call them and tell them to take it into consideration. They might not be as aware of the issue as you.

He is actually the Official Spokesman.

My parents used to dip me in molten lava when I acted up.
Are you a better man for it?
I realized that my feet were what was holding me back from becoming a man.

Do we really need to review the history of "the South" culture and lump this in as some of the many things that were "okay" years ago?

Who said I was down on you? I like you fine, Christo.

Also, not really down on the NFL. Just stunned by the way this incident is being handled. I think Peterson needs to be suspended by Goodell. I think before the week is out, he'll have come to that conclusion. And I think the Vikings made a horrible mistake this morning.

According to Phil Elliot, Viking fans are mostly in favor of it. It's a business. The Vikings customers are apparently speaking and the Vikings are reacting accordingly. Goodell has the ability to suspend but I doubt he's going to do it until he's met with AD.

I know it's a small distinction...but I really wished people would stop referring to it as a "stick".

It's a damn switch...not condoning it...I'm just not onboard with elevating what was used.

If we don't slow our roll a bit...it'll start being referred to as a branch, tree limb and ultimately he hit him with a damn log.

It's a switch...it's basically a fresh twig of a tree with the leaves removed.

Do you know where those removed leaves went? Was that "elevating" what was used?

Is a "stick" really elevating it from a "switch"?

Your public image generally comes, ya know, from the public. The public isn't nearly as monolithic on this issue as you want them to be.

I'd much rather be hit with a stick. The force used in whipping would break a stick.

"Stick" or "branch" are being used in some stories because (thankfully) much of the country doesn't know what a switch is.

I know.

I'm gonna drive to Mississippi this weekend and when I see a group of negros on a corner I'm gonna bust out a firehose.

Years ago.

Cultures evolve, beating kids to "parent" them is lagging behind in some parts of the US for some reason.

"We've always done it this way", is a horrible copout for not fixing a problem.

Tim, you're smarter than this. Can we please recognize that there's some nuance to these issues?

Does not make what AP did right. It disgusts me.

However, if you think that even abusive discipline of a parent equates to punching your wife out with a left hook, that's ridiculous. This is not a clear black and white issue. There is a large swarth of the culture for whom this is understandable, possibly even acceptable.

If anything, this can hopefully bring about a constructive dialogue so kids don't end up being beat like this (or at all).

minus the airplanes crashing in to the buildings by Islamic terrorists and the thousands of innocent people dying and the wars that followed. Other than that its exactly like 9/11.
You guys are eager to jump on every remark and take it to the most literal extreme. All I meant is that, like 9/11, the Rice video changed the culture of the NFL, and we will see this specifically in terms of how they handle bad behavior from now on. I used 9/11 because there are very few clear cut examples of single incidents which create a before and after dividing line, not because of the magnitude of events which aren't in any way comparable.
Gender reassignment surgery has that stark line you are looking for. Perhaps there is a decent metaphor, or would it be simile, in there.

This is the crime here. It's not about the NFL and when / how long they suspend.

Hope the family can move past this, especially the kid.
I still don't view this as a crime. He thought he was doing the right thing and was trying to be a good parent. In everything that has been released, that's what has stood out. He clearly needs parents classes but there's zero intent of hurting his son.

What if someone had zero intent of killing a person while driving home drunk. They need driving lessons?

Yep...that's a switch all right.

Ain't no damned stick. If someone found that while walking...would they really call it a stick?

I know it's really a small distinction and quite trivial...but it just doesn't sound right to say "He beat him with a stick"...it comes off as exaggeration...as if this needs exaggeration. Just look at the pics...he was wailed on a bunch.

It doesn't shock me though...whether its one hit or twenty...I've never seen a bare bottom switching NOT end up drawing blood and welts.

I've been abused and yes, I've spanked my kids. A switching on bare skin is abuse.

I don't think the intent was to abuse though. Get the man and child some counseling and let's stop trying end people's careers over every infraction.

Let us not forget that this kid is one of several from several different women. And AP probably only spends a week out of the year with the kid. He is NOT Dad to this kid. He is the sperm donor.

I'm not saying you can go around hitting kids if you're a full-time parent, but I'd bet this story would not have gotten out if AP was the parent of this kid 24/7-365.

Anything you do under the influence of drugs or alcohol is considered intent IMO.

This is exactly the point. There once was no law in place regarding drinking and driving until people could not govern themselves. It's clear, to me, that people cannot govern themselves on the issue of child abuse.
