Adrian Peterson's turn to get the boot from the NFL (1 Viewer)

I just saw the photos of the results of the Peterson kid's switching by AP. First thought: My ex-wife is from the south and was switched as a kid. During the divorce process, she took a switch to our oldest daughter, resulting in injuries very similar to what the Peterson kid presents. I took photos and showed it to the GAL. Conclusion: I was the bad guy for making mommy look bad.

This is just one big brouhaha that wouldn't result in any intervention of any sort if AP weren't a public figure. Big double standard for people in the public spotlight compared to private citizens.
who made that conclusion?
The GAL.
Unless you're talking about e-mail or a term for a woman, I don't know what the GAL is.
Guardian ad-litem.
do you agree with that conclusion?

Knowing nothing about your case, it might have been a situation where the GAL assumed you were trying to score points by taking the photos yourself. Perhaps it's a strategy they've seen employed a thousand times, and they were tired of it (IOW, not treating your case on its own merits). Maybe if a (neutral?) medical professional photographed and reported the injuries, it's a different matter

A guardian ad litem (GAL) is an individual appointed by the court to represent the best interests of a child or incapacitated person involved in a case in superior court.
I am sure there is more to it, but based on that your GAL didn't seem to be doing their job.
No, I don't think she did her job.

And now, about five years later, the proof is starting to come in.

I got physical custody of our special needs son. He is now doing very, very well and is *almost* off meds entirely. he's playing football on the local freshman high school football team and is emotionally and physically doing quite well.

My ex-, on the other hand, got physical custody of the two girls. I found out last week the oldest one has been cutting herself and will be going to a residential program for therapy at the end of this week. When we got divorced, this girl was doing the best of the three.. the most responsible, she did the best academically, etc., but now she's got the wrong kinds of friends and is going downhill fast.

And I am worried about the younger girl. She rolls with the punches the best of the bunch, but she has started butting heads with the ex pretty bad in recent months. I'm hoping she doesn't go downhill like her sister.

I think all three would have been better off with me, but I suppose every dad says that.

Think about it from a stranger's perspective: such photos al but prove something below-board took place, but do not establish how or who.

No, there was lots of other evidence I presented that showed the ex was behaving very poorly. Unfortunately, the nature of the process does not lend itself to cross-examination of the GAL, so I can only guess as to what she was thinking.

The vending machine in my office is out of Skittles, so I had to settle for peanut M&Ms instead. It's like 9/11 all over again.
Just great, who did Marshawn Lynch abuse?

The best part of twitter right now is people who think their grandma's beatings are on par with a beating from Adrian Peterson.
Obviously your grandma never got you with a belt or a yardstick. Didn't happen very often because we knew if we were "very naughty" at Grandma's, we would get it twice. Once from Grandma and again when we got home from our parents.
My grandma once beat me so much that she had severe bruising all over both hands. She screamed in pain at one point and my Grandpa came in and started kicking me while I was on the ground just protecting myself because he thought I had struck her. I was 11 and they were my grandparents. Nowhere near taking a beating from ADP. Especially if I was 4. Not even the same planet.

Peterson agrees that he is not a child abuser, so point SIDA I guess.
Team is having a presser, GM Rick Spielman opened up to speak about Peterson.

He dropped this gem:

Rick Spielman: “We feel strongly as an organization this is disciplining a child”

As the resident sissy, I have to say this is troubling.
Just gross. I can sort of get wanting them to let the courts play it out, but knowing the details as an owner I'd suspend him with pay until the courts decide an outcome.

Instead they're going all in and supporting him. Ugh.

He injured his child in the process of disciplining him.

What so difficult to understand?

So, you believe that any parent who overstepped the line while punishing their child engages in child abuse and is thus a child abuser, right?
Yes.
I am not sure what your position is based on the text you have stricken. My position is that a parent can cross the line when punishing a child. That does not mean they are a some child abusing monster. The intent is to raise the kid properly. Many of you act like spanking a child is akin to a parent or guardian of a child who engages in some sort of sadistic and torturous behavior with malicious intent.
big chasm between what happened and "torture".

I have been there, and I get it. imo not the best way to go about it, but I get giving a kid a quick spank out of reflex if they are about to do something harmful to themselves- running into traffic, etc..

as soon as you have the time to think about it and can take the time to get a object to use on your kid, it is no longer discipline to me. imo grown men should be able to collect themselves and go about it a different way.

even more asinine is using violence on your kid to discipline them for using violence. probably a reason that kid might be more willing to push another off that bike...

I'm guessing the Panther's activate Hardy this week and the NFL has a business as usual week which is about all you need to know about the league's ownership and management.

I'm looking at this case more for what will come of it:

- AP will be a better father and learn more effective and safer methods of discipline

- Other parents will rethink their attitudes toward physical punishment

- Lawmakers will change their laws and hopefully make spanking illegal, as Delaware did.

You're absolutely right in my opinion, but let's get more people to think the same way rather than direct all of our anger at one guy.

Why do people say, "I was beaten as kid with a belt/switch so it's okay"?

No, it's not.
not hard to understand. for the most part people want to think fondly of their childhood and parents. also, it is hard to break habits and think you might be doing something wrong with your kid.

however, when I hear that to me it means you are unwilling to learn or consider other possibilities. our parents did a lot of stupid ####. I mean how many of us were jumping aroound the car without a seatbelt while they chain smoked. they didn't know better, but doesn't mean we cant learn and evolve as parents.

Karma

I don't necessarily agree with everything you have said on these discussions with respect to AP/corporal punishment, but I think you have made some excellent contributions to the discussion and have enjoyed reading them and hearing your perspective.

Good point. To realize that this kind of discipline is abuse means realizing that your mother or father abused you.

AP credits his father's discipline for the way he turned out so it's hard to him to understand that it's abuse.

I think we all agree excessive force was used. I would never hit my own child and I think there are much better ways to discipline a child that don't involve physical pain. With that being said, I believe there is a big difference between telling a child, "OK, you broke the rules and because of this you are going to get switched." and then handing out the spanking as a form of discipline in a controlled manner... I was spanked like this many times as a child. I don't remember any individual incidents and I don't remember it being particularly traumatic. It was on par with being sent to my room.

One time, I think I was around 4 at the time, my mother was accusing me of lying... she did this a lot... anyway, she was extremely angry and she slapped me in the face, hard, over and over until I confessed to doing whatever it was she was accusing me of. I will never forget that and believe disciplining your a child while in a rage is far more damaging, sometimes regardless of the actual level of physical pain involved.

I'd like to know how many of those people were beaten with a stick as a 4 year old until their scrotum was bleeding?
Peterson was beaten with an extension cord - something he admitted he would never use on his kids because that's terrible.
I'd get the occasional extension cord beating, but that's only because that's the item that was closest to my dad when the disciplinin' was 'bout to go down. I'd also get the occasional clothes hanger or shoe disciplinin', too. Mainly, it was the belt, though. I can honestly say that brand of discipline is what made me the man I am today. A man who's really into S&M.

Sorry if this is a honda, I didn't read thru the thread...Flew up to the Twin Cities today for business. Listening to the radio talk shows a little bit, it seems to be about 85% supporting Adrian and about 15% against him. Every one seems to say what he did is absolutely awful, BUT, he should be allowed to play again next week:

1. He's done great things for the community, especially kids. lets give him a mulligan.

2. They spank/hit kids in the "the South" so its part of his culture.

3. I have have mixed feelings but lets just let the legal process work.

4. it wasn't child abuse, just a bad "whipping".

5. owners/coaches saw how bad the Vikings were without him so we better let him play.

Sounds like the word on the street up here is the NFL/Vikings think this won't go to trial until 2015 so let him play this season.
