All Android/Google All the Time (1 Viewer)

:hifive:  I expect that at some point in the future, we will have to use the actual GV app now that it appears to be back under development.  It actually looks pretty slick now... just missing some functionality at the moment.
Since the forced sms switch I have accidentally been sending people sms from my vz number.  Google's constantly changing their messaging vision has been a mess, but I don't think it's all on them.  I recall something regarding the carrier formats or something.

Received the S7 and almost done setting it up. Personally I hate it. It seems so counter intuitive compared to the OP3 software wise. Definitely not going to be looking at Samsung again in the near future. The only positive thing I can say about it is the screen is gorgeous. But after using my old Nexus 6 for a day I'll live with the S7 for a bit until the wife takes it or I sell it.
Download and install Nova Launcher.... see if the homescreen and app drawer visuals help a bit.

Does anyone have an effective solution for robocalls on Android?

I am on the do-not-call list, but am still getting several of these a day. Irritating.

I have Hiya installed on my phone. It does caller ID with reverse number lookup, and it does robocall blocking. And if a call gets through, you can report it to Hiya from the app and they can look into blocking it on other users' phones.

Back in the saddle with a OP3T. Grabbed a new black 128GB off of eBay earlier this week. I can honestly say this is my favorite phone ever. It just plain works, great speed, decent battery life, good camera, exactly what I hoped my Nexus 6 would have been.
All that and end of life announced for 6 months after release!

I read the only reason they put out the OP3T is because Qualcomm stopped making the 820 and pushed the 821. So instead of pissing off the people that bought the OP3 they put in a few small upgrades and made it a "new" phone. In reality it's the same phone just with different storage options.

And most companies EOL their product after a year to make room for the new device. Only difference is that Samsung and the others have enough cash that they can produce millions more than are sold and be able to sit on them without going broke. Oneplus being a subsidiary of OPPO doesn't have that luxury to sit on product they aren't selling right away. So they only produce in small quantities and when the new device is going to be announced they stop production and when old phone sells out it's gone.
The Dev community is all over that phone anyway, NBD.

So what's the best phone right now, without worrying about cost?  S8?  3T?  Pixel?  G6?

I'd assumed the S8 would be the easy choice but I went and tried it out at the store and the weird tall aspect ratio kind of bothered me.  For S8 owners, is that something you get used to?

Not sure what the update was over the weekend for ATT but I've never had better battery life.

I got the 7.0 push a while ago and the battery life was awful from there really.

Now on 7.0 Kernel 3.18.31.  NDR90U on my LG G5.

I don't see any new features or anything, maybe a bug fix.  Also my GPS lost alot of accuracy in the 7.0 change and that seems fixed too.

I have the Pixel XL and really enjoy it.  I went to The Verizon store at upgrade time and they ended up throwing in the Daydream VR for free, it's a novelty but is fun.  I thought I would go with the S8 but I also did not like the tall aspect of the phone.

I'm running Google Voice/Pixel/Verizon

The only messaging app I have installed is Hangouts, which will still support sms for GV users.  So, I don't really even need another sms application, as I never use my carrier #.

Well, now I am getting Hangouts notifications that say "you can no longer sms with Hangouts download Android messenger.". Then there is a button to "enable".

It appears that they have preinstalled Android messenger with an update, since you just have to enable.  Once again they have changed the name on a messaging service, as if there isn't already enough confusion.

I am going to see how long I can hold off on adding the Android messenger before it forces me to out it on.

To be honest I was happy enough with the original OP3 and my current OP3T that I haven't even contemplated rooting it. I haven't rooted a device since my N6 and there isn't any feature I'm truly missing. Can't wait to see what the OP6 and the snapdragon 845 give us. That'll probably be the earliest I'd upgrade as I feel the 835 while good isn't that huge of an jump from the 821.
Have had the OP3 for a while now (12 months?).

Great phone.  Great battery, camera, and voice clarity. I'll ride this till it dies.

I'm on a very similar set up and am continue to use Hangouts with no issues

IMO (without considering cost) it comes down to what you value more regarding hardware vs software. If hardware is your #1 priority then I think it's the S8. If software and pure Android is your priority I think it's the Google Pixel.

I bought a used Pixel XL two days ago on eBay for $425. The choice was so close between the S8 and Pixel that it came down to price for my considerations. The $425 was the best deal I could find so I pulled the trigger.

Yeah I haven't had much luck with pure android.  Both my Nex 6 and Nex 9 ran like dog####, much worse than my touchwiz'd S3 that preceded them.  The S8 looks like the choice I guess it's just figuring out if I can get used to that bizarre aspect ratio.

I have the S8+.  I have a feeling that the taller more narrow style will be the industry norm before long.  It works well, and when I pick up someones's iphone+ it feels like a laptop.

Alright gents, my Note 4 is dying.  It's reset on its own at least 10 times today.  I wiped the cache with no effect.  I'm going to do a factory reset tonight but preparing for the real possibility that fixes nothing, what are my options for a replacement given this situation:

I'm really trying to hold out until fall to see what the new Pixel and Iphone's bring, so I'm not looking to drop a lot of coin here.  Refurbs are fine.  Where do I look?

I've had the Pixel XL for about a week now and thought I'd weigh in with opinions in cases other were considering. After reading many, many reviews I came down to the Google Pixel and the Samsung S8. The S8 had the edge on hardware (full use of screen/no dead space, water proof, etc). The Pixel is one step down hardware wise IMO but is pure android OS and gets immediate updates. The margin on these two was so razor thin I finally decided to just get whichever I could get cheaper on eBay and that was the Pixel XL at $425. I was wary of buying a used phone on eBay but if your careful and pick a user with good rating it's better then getting new from the vendor IMO (I basically paid half price). The phone is in pristine condition. Not a blemish or nick anywhere.

The phone is extremely snappy and responsive which is exactly what I had read and expected. Don't like the dead space on the bottom of the phone but I knew that was the case so not really a knock. The camera is top notch with a 12.3 MB in the rear and a 8.0 MB in front. My old phone was a 4 MB so this is quite a step up. I no longer feel like I have a phone that can take a picture in a pinch but that I have a real camera that happens to function in other capacities. Aesthetics are kind of meh with the two tone look in back but it will have a screen protector on it so doesn't really matter. The speaker is on the bottom and depending on how you hold your phone it could cover the speaker. Why they don't put the speakers on the front of the phone is beyond me. The buttons are all well placed (i.e. power, volume and fingerprint scanner) and easy to access. With pictures and contacts backed up to my Google account setup was a breeze.

Bottom line is that if money weren't an issue I likely would have opted for the S8. Since money was a consideration I couldn't be more pleased with the Google Pixel as a solid second choice.

  • Pros: Software and camera
  • Cons: Doesn't use full screen, not waterproof, speaker on bottom

It uses the full screen for video

No, it doesn't. Look at this picture of the S8 and Pixel. The Pixel has unused space on both the top and bottom where the S8 uses almost all real estate.

S8 vs Pixel screen usage
- play a video on Youtube, turn sideways, if uses the full screen available for the phone.

There is "unused non screen space"  but that is never having video on it

The full 5.5 inches of screen space is used.   That is extra space outside the "screen"

I think that bezel is what he was talking about.

I had similar problems with my Note 4.  I am on a Pixel XL now, and love it.

Correct. The screen to body ratio of the S8 is 83% while the Pixel and Pixel XL are about 70%.

For my needs the best phone will be the Xiaomi Mi Mix 2(6gb RAM, 256gb storage) that is just about to launch, but price is always a factor so I doubt I'll have one for at least a year. The original Mi Mix will be coming down in price quite a bit so I may bite on the "cheap" version(4gb/128gb) of that one if it falls under $400. Current lowest price I've seen is $480....

https://www.aliexpress.com/item/Original-Xiaomi-Mix-4GB-128GB-Snapdragon-821-Quad-Core-NFC-FDD-LTE-4G-16-0MP-6/32765288363.html?aff_platform=aaf&cpt=1498676564368&sk=VnYZvQVf&aff_trace_key=9627085683e7410d9bb5cb99d91b729f-1498676564368-08067-VnYZvQVf

Right now I use a Doogee that I am pretty happy with so I may eventually go the poor man's route and pick up a Doogee Mix for $180 even though the battery capacity is much worse than the Mi Mix.....

https://www.banggood.com/DOOGEE-MIX-5_5-Inch-Android-7_0-6GB-RAM-64GB-ROM-Helio-P25-Octa-Core-2_5GHz-4G-Smartphone-p-1155524.html?utm_campaign=Kimo30&utm_content=Rosalia&p=QV2409786796201409DB

... although you do have to be a little careful with the Doogee if you plan to travel with it because it doesn't support nearly as many bands of LTE.

But those are for MY needs. You'd have to define what features are particularly important to you to give an accurate recommendation.

I'd like to keep it around the pool and possibly use it occasionally in the pool.
As long as the speaker isn't submerged it's cool.  It's by no means waterproof, but if it got splashed or something it would be fine.  I have actually put the lens under to experiment with underwater shots, and it's fine.  It's not as cool as my wife's galaxy for in the pool though.  Underwater shots are awesome!

That's what I've been doing for my last 4 phones. I usually get one model behind the latest, and I always make sure I'm buying from a private seller who has pics of the actual phone (as opposed to power sellers who use stock photos). I always seem to find a phone in perfect/mint condition for a great price. Paying  $300-$350 for a perfect condition phone beats dropping twice that for the newest release IMO.

I've been an Android user for a long time, but I may be giving up and moving to Apple.

I'm not a high end user and definitely not paying high end prices. $200-250 is about my range. And Android phones have become annoying in that range. The hardware can be had with decent specs, but I'm finding that the overall build quality isn't great on a lot of them. Even worse, there is virtually no support for these phones after release. Motorola used to be great, but have been terrible with updates and security support since being bought by Lenovo.

I'm thinking about the Moto G Plus 5th Gen, but I can get a new iPhone 6 for the same price, and know that Apple will continue to support it for awhile. Even an iPhone SE is a bit tempting since it can be had for $170 brand new. But I'm pretty sure the small screen is a deal breaker there for me.

It took them almost 8 months to roll out Android 7.0 and that same amount of time to roll out their first security update (even though Google puts out monthly security updates and Moto used to put them out monthly before Lenovo bought them). And good luck seeing any more OS updates after the first year.

At least with Apple, even if I buy a 2 year old phone, I know they'll keep rolling out security updates and iOS updates to it for several years.

Honestly, I don't see that much difference in how I use my phone between the updates. I'm pretty practical by nature, I guess, and don't get caught up in the latest update drama.

About a week ago the Google Now feature popped back up on my Nexus 5x. But this time I can't disable it.
I never use it and it probably drains my battery.
The net hasn't been any help. Is this permanently part of the android OS?

Google Now never really went away, it just got renamed and the shortcut got replaced.  What specifically are you referring to?

when it's active, the cards (and all the other stuff) would show up when I swipe left on my home screen.
I used to be able to disable it so it's not running in the background. But as of this past week, it's back, and no way to remove the feature.

Any ideas?

Try to uninstall the updates to the Google app?
