Try to uninstall the updates to the Google app?
Crapola. I saw the steps to do this on the google forums and did a factory reset on the Google app. I restarted my phone and now it's stuck on screen that says, "Android is starting..."
But the little progress bar doesn't fill, and it's been this way for over an hour.
I can still use the phone call function and camera though. And I'm receiving emails though the app but I have no home screen/widgets/folders.
I may have bricked it unless the OS restarts itself. :(

Umm... i think all you had to do was go into app settings and click uninstall or force stop or something.

Sounds like your launcher is gone? Try to install a 3rd party one to test.

Worst case: back up what you can and Factory Data Reset.

I found my way to the settings app and was able to to do a factory reset. Phheww!
Close call there. I still hate that google home/cards garbage their forcing on me but I'll leave it a lone for now.

So i've been googling and can't find an answer.

Just set my daughter up with a phone she is 12.

Google music does not give her any channel/streaming options.... is this an age thing?

I don't think you entered her age anywhere, did you?  What version of google music is it?  Older versions did not have streaming.

P.S. I just set my similarly aged daughter up with a phone too

So - when I set up her phone she signed up with her own email. And yes I used her birthdate when signing up and didn't think about it

When I did this it made me download Family Link since she was under 13.

Is there a different way?

I don't know... The email I used for my daugher was one I got when she was born(ish) to use as a google photos repository.  I have no idea what I did about the age at that time. :oldunsure:

As a test, add your your account (in android settings) and see if you can see the streaming options.

This family link app seems like something I should be using... how do you like it so far?

Add my account where?

On her phone?

Yes, just temporarily to troubleshoot: settings/personal/accounts/add account (make sure you disable sync for everything). Then launch Google Music open the menu and switch to your account at the top drop down.  If you are able to see the streaming options with your account, it may very well be an age restriction thing.

ETA If not, it is another issue to troubleshoot (old app, corrupt app? something else??).

gotcha.   The family link thing is pretty cool.  I can see what she is using, location and other stuff.

The thing I don't like is there are certain apps I let her use that will not let me install on her phone at all because of the family link and age.

Recommendations for an Android phone for my 12 year old? Would like her to get one as she's heading into 7th grade and we need to be able to connect for before and after school transportation and other similar situations. Verizon has a couple cheap options with an LG and Samsung lower end models. I've never bought an unlocked phone before. I see Amazon has them. How does that work? Buy and take to Verizon and they give you a Sim card? How do I know if phone is compatible?

Have you checked with your carrier to see if you're eligible for a free phone on your plan? They might have some old models that they're trying to get rid of and you won't have to worry about compatibility.

I recently got my daughter the Amazon (ad supported) version of the Moto G5+. The lower spec model was $185.  Everything about the phone is impressive (the camera is weak for me, but just fine for her). I coupled that with a $10/month prepaid plan from Red Pocket that includes 500/500 of minutes/text and 100mb of LTE data.

That's not much, but she's been using an old phone with a Google Voice number as a "wifi phone" for the last 18+ months and it she sticks to those habits, and only uses the sim card when needed, it's a great sports/recreation communication device for us.

To activate the device from a prepaid MVNO all you really have to do is order the SIM card online loaded with the first months worth of coverage. Just pop it in the phone, follow the directions to activate it, and your in business.

After that it's just a matter of "refilling" the account balance each month, either online or over the phone.

If you want to use it with Verizon be sure the phone supports those bands (the G5+ does, but a lot of unlocked phone don't) and just walk in the store and ask them to add it to your plan.

Verizon had the LG K20 for free. It's decent
Yeah I see that and the Samsung J7 V for $5 a month 24 months. I think I might go with that one because I'm used to Samsung setups. Sucks they hit you with 20 a month line fees for every phone. We're on the 12gb shared plan now and pay $57 a month with employer discount. I wouldn't mind unlimited but the jump to $100 seems steep. Glad I switched from Sprint a few months back because of crappy service but I do miss unlimited.

Just give her your old one.

I do the refurb from Amazon thing for my phones. Just take it to Verizon, and they'll put a SIM in for you. Amazon listing will say if it's Verizon compatible.

Highly recommend this route. I can't believe how much people are willing to spend on phones.

My son has an iPod - wifi only.  Can I message him using my Android phone? His friends (with iPhones) message him, I think using his gmail address?  Its all very confusing to me.  Emailing him is nearly useless ...

Yes, but you both need the same messaging app installed (and active accounts)  Allo, WhatsApp, Hangouts, etc.  Allo and Hangouts use a google account.

So the other night my wifes Galaxy S4 went to the black screen of death. Saying there was no OS. She got it to reboot and it seems fine. An hour later my Nexus 5 went into Safe mode all by itself. Wondering if we were both hacked?

WTF? Anyone have this experience? I didn't even know how to get it out of Safe mode. I ended up rebooting and it worked fine.

Hoping someone can help me out, because I'm stumped.

Yesterday I realized my Gmail app on my S7 wasn't updating. I knew of some emails I was expecting but didn't show up. I had tried sending a couple, and it would just show as "failed" in my outbox. Tried pulling down to sync. Still failed.

This morning I looked into it further. Restarted the phone. Updated Gmail. Deleted the updates, re-installed updates. Checked sync settings and Gmail was showing as being synced virtually up to the minute. Manually synced again.

Still nothing. Found this guide and followed every potential step. Nada in the way of new emails.

Any ideas?

Just tried going to gmail.com from my phone, thinking at least the emails would show up there. Also a no. And when I try and send an email that way, I get a "failed" popup.

So it seems like an account issue instead of an app issue.  Am I on some kind of watch list?

Putting a bow on this, when I was able to go onto Gmail.com from an actual computer (blocked at work, mobile site didn't show this) I saw that I was actually out of Google storage (over 15 GBs). Weird that a message saying that wouldn't pop up on the app, the mobile site, or one of the other 30 Google-related apps I have on my phone, or that it wasn't mentioned in one of the "clear your storage" spots.

I deleted emails from before 2010 as well as 50K emails buried in my Promotions folder and I'm back to being good.

Same thing happened to me earlier this year, but I was able to get in front of it because I did get notifications on every device I use prior to it happening.  I paid for more storage though  :bag:

not sure where to ask this, but I'll start here:

my Ipad finally died and we're looking to replace it. back-up information remains on the icloud.

I barely used it- turned more into a family/son thing with him playing games on it and my wife doing a handful of stuff for the kids (music lessons were on it). we are on android tablets and Pixel phones otherwise- that was our only remaining Apple product.

Is there a way of accessing that back-up information on the icloud and importing it to an android or windows platform if we go that route? my kid has games that he's been playing for a long time that would be heart-breaking for him to lose (not end of the world stuff, IMO- but would be nice to be able to set him back up) and the music lessons as well.

or do we have to get a new ipad to do this?

IMO (without considering cost) it comes down to what you value more regarding hardware vs software. If hardware is your #1 priority then I think it's the S8. If software and pure Android is your priority I think it's the Google Pixel.

I bought a used Pixel XL two days ago on eBay for $425. The choice was so close between the S8 and Pixel that it came down to price for my considerations. The $425 was the best deal I could find so I pulled the trigger.
Found this article today & for the most part I think it mirrors my opinion a few months ago. I think it's a little too critical of the Pixel's hardware but does back up my thoughts on it's great software. In short you want superior hardware go S8. You willing to sacrifice some hardware for smooth butter software go Pixel.

Pre-ordered the Note 8 at Best Buy today. They have $150 off in addition to the package given by Samsung - sd card & wireless charger or a gear 360 camera.

I wasn't as blown away by the intro of the 8 as I hoped I would be, but then again, I was probably hoping for too much.  But after seeing my son's S8 for the last couple of months, I knew I had to finally move on from my Note 3 even though I still like that phone a lot.  I need (ok, really want) that better camera on my phone in addition to a bunch of other stuff that all adds up.  Here's hoping it doesn't explode.   :)

Man, we are on the same page. My wife and I did the same thing yesterday. We first went to Costco as they are offering a $150 Costco Card and a Power Pack kit but ultimately decided to go with BB because of the $150 off instantly x2 That's $15 a  month off the bill right there.

Who is your carrier? For Verizon they are offering  a trade in promotion as well. They are going to give my wife $480 as a trade in value for her N5. They told me they would give me up to $240 for my N3. I don't know if I believe them on that one. We'll see.

Also, which gift from Samsung are you going to choose? My wife is going to get the Wireless Charger and the 128gb micro SD card and I think I will get the 360 Degree Camera. That might come in handy later this year in Vegas.

Sorry I missed this response earlier.

I didn't even consider trade-in since I think my Note 3 is pretty much considered ancient at this point, so I just assumed it wouldn't be worth anything.  I just looked into it, and the Note 5 is on the list for $480, and the Note 4 for $240, but the Note 3 isn't on the list.  I figure it's worth more to me as a backup than whatever I can get by selling it. I'll ask when I go pick up the new one, though, just in case.

I'm going to go with the wireless charger/SD card combo.  I was excited about the possibility of the camera, but realize that I probably wouldn't end up using it that often while the SD card will be nice to have and the wireless charger is pretty much a necessity that I'd end up buying anyway.  I use an old one for my phone now, but like the idea of the fast charge of this new one.  If I were getting two, I'm pretty sure I'd do the same as you and get one of each package.

Got a  S8+ this week.  Was interested in the note 8 but couldn't justify the price difference for the small spec difference.  Happy with this s8+ so far.

Using navigation today and wanted to check something, kept the navigation in a small window in the bottom right while I check the internet, never seen this before, assuming it's a new feature of Oreo,

S7 that I picked up in Jan already starting to get real buggy and tries to update itself once a week.  Really getting sick of Verizon's locked down phones.

Just ordered a couple of unlocked Samsung S7's for $450 each at B&H. My wife and I are still going with HTC One M7's, so it was time.

Can I walk into any Verizon store and get a Nano SIM card without them giving me a hassle about not buying the phone with them?

Just go to a Corp store and you'll have no issues. Sometimes the reseller's want to charge so just easier to go Corp.
OK, thanks. I thought they were all some kind of resellers but I see one in a local mall that looks like a Corp location. I'll go there.
